Chapter 23
While waiting for her blood work and MRI results to come back, which Dr. Weller said would take about 2 weeks because of the new lab and how thoroughly she wanted everything done, Hannah had to figure out how to preoccupy her mind. It's hard when you are wishing for the best as you know something fundamentally has changed within you; but you can't put your finger on it. Something told her that it was very important to have those results. Meanwhile, she had to keep on truckin' at the rehab center. She wasn't done yet and still had a ways to go. But she was understanding the basic things like triggers to both her trauma and drug use. The counselors thought that Hannah had some slight form of PTSD or post-traumatic stress disorder from the M.E. and that's what ended up causing that nightmare that she kept having.
One day, while she was out on the veranda, Caddie came out with a bunch of papers in hand and sat down next to her. Hannah knew that Caddie had been on the computer which patients were allowed to use but was heavily monitored. Whatever Caddie had printed out seemed to be ok because she was smiling. She put the pages in front of Hannah and explained:
"I was just online and a friend had told me about this organization that uses double high fives to uplift people's spirits. Just literally a stranger walks up to you on the street with a t-shirt that says "Double High Fives" and actually does that. The friend that emailed me sent these flyers out saying that a bunch of rehab locations in the Fort Worth/Dallas area are doing a "Double High Five" campaign as part of getting their anti-social patients to connect with regular people. I think we should talk to our counselors and see if we can sign up to do it. Wouldn't that be neat?"
"Wow that sounds really awesome! I would love to do something like that! I mean you and I aren't anti-social but it is still such a great thing to do. I wonder how we can make it extra special."
They went to speak to their counselors at that point and the latter were surprised and very supportive of signing up the Hope to Heal center for this very interesting and new endeavor. Hannah told Allen all about it the next time they spoke on the phone and he thought it was a wonderful idea and a positive pick me up for Hannah. It had been a week since he had gone to see her in-laws and she knew how well it had gone. Even she hadn't expected such a positive outcome. She was particularly surprised that Courtney was ok with Allen being in love with her.
That's just not something one would think in-laws would do but Courtney and Ralph Peters were the type of in-laws every woman could only dream of having. Though Chris was their son and an only child at that, they weren't fools. If he messed up they weren't going to protect him just because he was their son. It made her love them even more. She knew after she had heard the story from Allen that no matter what happened in her life after she left rehab, they would always have a place in her life and heart.
While the counselors were organizing the whole "Double High Five" idea for the center, Hannah and Caddie were very excited to participate and have some responsibilities for calling family and friends of the patients to see if they would participate. Hannah called the Mother Superior who volunteered the whole parish for the event. They went online and custom ordered t-shirts with the "Double High Five" words on them. Hannah also went as far as to have an M.E. blue ribbon in the corner along with the illness itself so that she could really represent the cause properly. She was feeling full of love, hope, and peace when Allen called to check up on her.
He surprised her by saying that his office would also get involved and that quite a few agents had volunteered their time to the cause. He asked Hannah to send him a picture of the shirt she custom ordered and he made himself a similar one but for men. Not only did he want to support peace and harmony but also and most importantly Hannah and her struggles. Caddie made hers with an anti-drug slogan that had a positive message on it. They were all very proud of their shirts afterwards.
The center was very happy and honored that the DEA was doing so much to help the community. Hannah was so happy to spend a whole day with Allen in the out of doors that she couldn't wait for the event. It was advertised in commercials, on radio stations, billboards, and websites all around the country. The hope was that this event would spark a national movement of peace. After all, it only took one person to spread love and happiness into this much needed and hardcore world. Because they expedited the order, the t-shirts were to arrive in 5 days' time and just before that weekend's event.
That Thursday the shirts arrived at the center and the whole place was abuzz with excitement as people tried on their shirts and took selfies and group pictures. For a fraction of a moment they all felt well and happy. Their problems were put on the backburner. Even the oldest of patients were like kids, showing off their shirts, and pretending to turn the long veranda into a runway while strutting their stuff to applause and laughter. For just one moment, it wasn't a rehab center but a dorm room or a sleep away camp full of kids having a fashion party with simple t-shirts they made themselves.
When the weekend came, everyone was so excited they could barely sleep. They took vans to downtown Fort Worth first and got out, they lined up with other rehab centers and counselors. Hannah and Caddie held hands and jumped up and down like teens at a concert. They were handed placards which read "Double High Fives" with a giant smiley face underneath. Allen found Hannah shortly afterwards with the other DEA agents from his office. The event had gained so much momentum, the news were brought in.
The beauty of this event was that you couldn't tell who was who. There weren't any badges or signs that said who was a cop and who was an addict or an ill person. It was just a bunch of people wearing t-shirts just like a marathon. That's what made this event stand out so much. People had the opportunity to see humanity, not a badge, a gun, a syringe, a pipe, an illness. If people were in wheelchairs, they still had t-shirts on and were waving placards. They weren't any different from the people walking down the streets wondering what the hell was going on. And that was as it should be.
As Allen was standing and talking with Hannah and Caddie, he noticed someone watching him out of the corner of his eye. He turned in surprise to see his old rookie partner Ryan Dresden standing there, very unsure of himself. Ever since their all-out brawl in the locker room nearly 9 months before, they had barely spoken to each other. Allen had changed his schedule around so he would no longer work with Ryan even though they were both working the Scorpio case as well as others. Thankfully, when it came to Scorpio, that was still years away as for the other cases, as Allen did most of the work anyways, Ryan was reassigned.
Allen had been paired up with another Quantico graduate, a woman named Elizabeth who was very competent and never made things personal as Ryan had. He loved working with her and she was very intelligent. He told Hannah about her and Hannah was anxious to meet her. Elizabeth was engaged and promised she would try to bring her fiancé to the event so they both could meet everyone. Allen finally told his boss and other agents about his relationship with Hannah. Surprisingly, unlike Ryan, no one gave him a hard time about it. His boss knew that Hannah had nothing to do with the Scorpio case and was just at the wrong place at the wrong time. He sympathized with Hannah's plight in life and was glad to hear how well she was doing.
His relationship with Hannah and vice versa was working wonders for both of them so who was to tell them that this was a bad thing. Their souls were both healing and they weren't doing anything illegal. When Allen had spilled the beans to his boss it was then that the latter realized what the locker room fight was about and why Allen decided to not work with Ryan anymore. The boss sat down with Ryan a few weeks before the event and told him that he wasn't willing to lose Allen and in order for Ryan to become a good agent and someone respected by his peers, he had to look at the job from all sides and not be so judgmental of things that weren't his to judge.
Ryan had taken the advice to heart and was trying to figure out the best time to talk to Allen but as the latter was never in the office at the time he was, it was nearly impossible. It wasn't until the event and the DEA's involvement in the community function, that Ryan found his opportunity. Now he stood watching Allen laughing with Hannah and another woman. He swallowed hard and took a step toward Allen, who was watching him warily. He knew it was now or never.
"Hey Allen. Can we talk?" Ryan said rubbing his hand through his hair. Allen looked at the women who had moved away to talk to someone else then.
"Yeah, what's up?" Allen asked the kid. Ryan looked around nervously; fidgeting before stuffing his hands into his jean pockets. He should have prepared more.
"Listen, about what I said in the locker room. It-it was stupid and judgmental. You were right. Your personal life is your own and it's none of my business. I respect you a lot as a person and agent. I still have a lot to learn about the job and life. I guess I really need to figure out how to not be such a hot headed prick." Allen gave him a half smile at that last line.
"Yeah I'd say." Allen replied.
Ryan hesitated for a fraction of a moment and extended his hand towards Allen who did the same thing and they shook on it and then hugged it out. After which, Allen reminded him of the reason they were there and they gave each other double high fives. All was forgiven and learned from. Allen then introduced Ryan to Caddie and reintroduced him to Hannah. Ryan apologized to Hannah for ever doubting her and being rude to her. She accepted his apology.
They took a selfie together just as Elizabeth along with her fiancé Don found them. Again the introductions were made and they even found a t-shirt for Ryan to wear. Then they were told by the organizers what to do and they spread out into the downtown area. Some went alone and others like Hannah and her friends went in a cluster. The "Double High Five" shirts were getting them the attention and results they were hoping for and more. People asked them for pictures and videos and even asked those like Hannah who added ribbons to their shirts what they meant. So it was a great way to open the channel for communication as well.
They were having a great time in the beautiful weather as Hannah noticed that Caddie and Ryan were doing their walk mostly side by side laughing. She wondered if she just witnessed a special new moment but then Allen caught her attention as a bunch of kids out shopping with their parents wanted lots of high fives. It was silly and cute and just so much fun. It made the soul sing.
As they were laughing and doing their high fives with people, they brought many a smile to faces everywhere they turned. However, one person out shopping in Fort Worth that early afternoon was stunned into silence when she saw Hannah and her group come skipping and running along the street with their placards. Scarlett couldn't believe her eyes; there was Hannah, the drug addict, the ill estranged wife of her by now ex-lover, running around the streets with a bunch of people and seemed to be having a marvelous time. Not just that, she was absolutely glowing.
She watched Hannah and her group pass; at one point hers and Hannah's eyes connected and recognition was made. Hannah stopped smiling and slowed to a stop. She looked at Scarlett with an unfathomable expression. Her eyes were unreadable. Then she nodded and with one last glance, her smile returned and she walked to catch up to her friends. Scarlett couldn't believe what she had just witnessed. What was that? What had just happened?
As Scarlett watched them disappear from view, she—a woman who never had a deep thought in her life—wondered if she was just forgiven.
