Chapter 20
Harper and Emmeline were sitting at the table in their suite playing cards, with the remnants of room service scattered around them. They had spent the day traipsing all over Paris and were pleasantly exhausted.
Luke and Harper had been taking it slow all week, they had taken the moments they could, when Gran was asleep or wanting a night in, and spent them together, walking, talking, holding hands, and getting to know each other.
It was odd to relearn someone she thought she had known her entire life, but she realized that there was so little that she truly knew about Luke. She knew he had gone to school for engineering but his first love was architecture, and he had often thought about going back for another degree. He also had plans for the family business when their fathers retired. He wanted to expand the company to be more than just a construction firm, he wanted it to be all inclusive with engineering, architecture, construction, and interior design as part of the package. It was ambitious, and after listening to him she had little doubt that it would happen.
She had also shared things with him, like her longing for a family and home of her own. Her love of drawing and fine wines. Her wants were much simpler than his but to share them was a huge step for her, she rarely shared them with anyone.
There had also been plenty of kissing but so far that was as far as it had gone. It was unspoken between them that to take it any further would change everything for them, but not only them, their families as well. It was something that they were both treading softly around.
Now, Harper sat with Gran, watching her win yet another hand of Rummy while Luke was changing for his dinner with a friend who was in Pairs on business. Harper had never heard of this particular friend, Bobby, before, but Luke said that he was an old friend from his college days that he hadn't seen in years and they had a lot to catch up on. Bobby did something important for the government and FEMA and Luke was interested to hear the recent changes in certain Federal regulations.
There was a knock at the door and Harper rushed to get it, only too glad to get away from yet another loosing hand of cards. Gran was a graceless winner and an even worse looser, and she jeered at Harper as she rushed away from the table.
This caused Harper to laugh, and she was smiling as she opened the door to one of the most beautiful women she had ever seen. She was tall and slender with legs that were showcased in a very short skirt and very high heels. Her long blond hair was caught back into a sleeked back high ponytail and her cheekbones looked like she cold cut someone with them.
Harper must have been staring because the smile faded from the woman's face as she looked over Harper's shoulder. "Is Luke here, I do have the right room?" Even her voice was sexy.
"Bobby, is that you my dear?" Gran said from the other side of the room. "Come here and give and old lady a kiss," she insisted.
Harper had no choice but to stand aside and let the woman slide past her. This was Bobby? This Bobby was no man! Harper crossed her arms defensively as she watched the woman cross the room and greet Emmeline.
"Emmeline, how are you?"
"I'm fine my dear, please sit. Harper would you go let Luke know his date is here," she instructed her.
Bobby's head turned sharply and she looked at Harper, taking in her appearance from head to toe. "This is Harper?" she seemed very curious.
"And you're Bobby," Harper said, barley able to contain her anger.
"Yes, this is our Harper," Gran said with a tender smile before shooing Harper in the direction of Luke's room.
Harper walked over to his door and banged on it. "Luke, your Bobby is here!" she yelled through the door using Grans possessive word before she walked over to a chair in the corner and sat. She never once took her eyes of Bobby who sat across from Gran.
She was behind Luke as he exited his room, but she was able to see the warm welcome in his smile as he greeted her. "Bobby!"
"Luke!" she stood and let him envelop her in a tight hug that lasted entirely too long for Harper's liking.
Sitting in her corner, her foot swinging in agitation, her arms crossed in anger, Harper watched the scene between the old friends unfold before her.
"I've made us reservations at that little restaurant we used to go to when we would visit Paris as students, do you remember it?" she asked before turning towards Gran. "We always brought Luke when we came to Paris, he was the only one of us that was fluent in the language. He always made the trips so much easier." She laughed at an unspoken memory that she shared with the room in general.
Harper's foot shook faster. Luke and Gran had said that they needed her language expertise for this trip, an obvious lie.
Luke looked around, searching for her, and when his eyes landed on her, he took one look at her quivering body and moved to straighten his tie, as if it was suddenly too tight.
Yes, he was wearing a tie, he never wore a tie for her.
"I didn't know you spoke French Luke?" Harper asked sweetly.
"Bobby, have you met Harper?" Luke asked bringing the beautiful woman forward.
"Yes, we met, Emmeline introduced us."
"Yes, Emmeline did," Harper agreed, shooting sparks at Gran who looked more amused than put out by the situation.
"I must say, she doesn't look anything like I expected her to look, although it has been years since you mentioned her. I guess we've all gotten a little older." Bobby was starting to look very uncomfortable under Harper's condemning gaze.
Harper saw Luke visibly wince at her comment.
The sad thing was that it came across as unbelievably rude but Harper, despite being mad, didn't think that it had been meant that way.
"Are you ready?" Luke asked Bobby.
"Sure," Bobby sounded relieved.
Luke kissed Gran then looked over at Harper as if debating whether he should give her a parting kiss as well. He must have decided against it because he gave her a weak smile before he escorted Bobby to the door. Harper couldn't help but think that they made a spectacular looking couple.
As soon as they were out of the door Gran started laughing. "Never let anyone tell you you're not an intimidating woman Harper. That was the most excitement I've had in a long time."
Harper stood because she was too angry to remain sitting. "You knew Bobby was a woman, you knew Luke spoke fluent French?" she accused, just as angry at her as she was at Luke.
"Yes, just like I know you're madly in love with Luke even if you won't admit it to yourself."
Harper looked at Gran, feeling as if she had just been punched. All of her anger drained out of her as the realization hit her. She was in love with him! But how and when? Did he know? She sank to the chair behind her.
Gran shook her head, muttering something about young people now days, but Harper hardly heard her. "Will you stay here until Luke gets back please, I don't like to be alone?" she asked her.
"You don't mind being alone during the days or when Luke and I go out at night?" Harper accused, guessing Gran wanted her to stay so Luke could talk to her when he got back.
"I'm an old lady, humor me!" she insisted as she walked into her bedroom and closed the door.
Harper didn't move, she sat in her corner trying to deal with the knowledge that she was in love with Luke, and Luke was in love with somebody else. Perhaps it was Bobby, he had known her for ten years and he had said that there was a chance that they would be together soon. Maybe he had realized that this trip would be that chance, maybe, even now, he was trying to convince her that they should be together.
But then why would he spend so much time romancing her and feeding her all of that nonsense about giving them a chance. Granted, he had only ever said that he wanted her not that he loved her. Luke had always been a player and she thought she was finally seeing another side of him and maybe she was, but maybe it was the side that he used to seduce women, one he had never used on her before.
Maybe he was both men, and she knew one of them but not the other.
Her head was swimming, and she knew that it wasn't something that she was going to figure out sitting here waiting for him to return.
The real question she had to ask herself was which Luke was the Luke she wanted to know and which one was the one that she needed to let go? Luke the friend or Luke the potential lover?
