Chapter Eight
Due to the fact I was currently a human cyborg, I wasn't allowed to compete in the Sports Festival, for which I was grateful. The whole thing seemed a bit too intense for me. The day before the Sports Festival, I thought about getting some signs or maybe a t-shirt made so I could cheer on my friends but became conflicted with who I should cheer for. I didn't want anyone to feel left out.
Yami stepped out of my bathroom wrapped in a black terry cloth robe, his long dyed hair was dripping wet and despite being freshly showered his thick black eyeliner was still in place though looking a little bit smudged and weepy. He took one look at me and chuckled softly, "what ya doing, Tar-Bear?"
"I have a dilemma." I groaned.
He snickered softly not taking my dilemma very seriously and dropped on the couch next to me to towel dry his hair, "let's hear it."
"I'm not allowed to compete in the festival tomorrow-."
"For the safety of you and others, really smart thinking on the faculty's part." Yami poked at me taking a jab at my accident proneness.
I frowned slightly at his teasing but continued on, "I wanted to cheer for you, Shinso and Tenya but what if you guys don't feel properly cheered on because I'm cheering for multiple people?" I whined.
Yami stared at me for a moment hands frozen on his head mid towel drying, "wow." He chuckled, "well perhaps I can make the equation a little less stressful, I'm not participating either."
"You're not?" I asked curiously.
"Nope, zero interest. Besides someone has to sit with you in the stadium, have you seen how many stairs there are, that's just asking for trouble." He poked at me with a smile.
"Y-Yami!" I swatted at him with my non cyborg arm.
He snickered and continued towel drying his hair. "Does that help?"
I thought for a moment. If Yami wasn't participating, I could still make signs for both Shinso and Tenya and Yami and I could cheer for them together and no one would feel left out. "It does!" I cheered, "I have to go run an errand."
Yami frowned, "no offense, Ghost Girl, but I'm not letting you go anywhere alone."
I sighed, "I'd be okay, I'm just going a few blocks. But it'll be easier if you're with me so I can get the right size t-shirt." I headed to my bedroom to get ready to go giving Yami some privacy to change in the living room. I was getting a little better about getting dressed and working around the massive cast on my arm. It was definitely not graceful by any means but I could manage without Yami's help finally.
After the 20 minutes it took for me to make myself mostly presentable, I stepped into the living room to find Yami patiently waiting near the sofa with my comfortable sneakers in hand. He was gothed out to the max today wearing black skinny jeans that had various chains and dangling bits with an upside-down cross charm dangling from one of the chains. He was wearing a tight black shirt with some sarcastic saying that was sure to make someone angry, a thick black studded choker and some black fingerless gloves. His dark makeup was flawless and his long dyed black hair was pulled back in a ponytail. I had no idea how he managed all of that in the time it took me to put on a pair of jeans, a tank top and a loose short sleeved button up top.
He helped me with my shoes. I had no idea what I would have done without him, probably just locked myself in my house until my cast was able to be removed and I could function normally. It would have been a disaster. Yami offered me an arm to help me up before whisking me out the door. We made it to the t-shirt printing store. Yami threw me a wary look as he started to piece together what we were doing.
"I'm not wearing anything that isn't black." He frowned.
I giggled, "okay. I'll make sure yours is black."
He sighed and we made our way to the counter. The man behind the counter offered us a smile but it fell slightly as he looked at my cast with all the fun metal bolts sticking out of it. He recovered and his smile was even warmer than before, "how can I help you two?"
"We need shirts to cheer on our friends in the Sports Festival tomorrow." I beamed.
"Don't go throwing the f word around willy nilly." Yami protested.
The shopkeeper chuckled, and I breathed a sigh of relief as I realized he liked Yami's humor. A lot of people didn't quite get his humor and often thought him rude as a result. I attempted to elbow him in the side with my non cyborg arm to admonish him but it had little effect.
"Alright, pick out the style and color of your shirt." The shopkeeper motioned to the wall of blank shirts behind him.
I picked out a plain white short sleeved shirt, Yami opted for a black deep v-neck.
"And what do you want them to say?" The shopkeeper asked after he found us the right sizes.
Yami looked over to me as the shop keeper got out the lettering form for Yami's shirt. "Go Shinso!" I beamed.
"Absolutely not, I am not rooting for Mind Wipe, I'd rather cheer on the Boy Scout in shining armor." Yami grimaced.
"O-oh.. okay." I felt slightly down about it, I'd really wanted to cheer on Tenya.
Yami groaned. "Ugh, fine, I'll cheer on Mind Wipe." He looked over to the shop keeper, "make it as sarcastic as humanly possible."
"Yami!" I scolded him as the shopkeeper laughed.
The shopkeeper drafted something up in what was apparently a 'sarcastic' font and held it up to Yami for his approval.
Yami smirked, "it's perfect."
"What about you?" The shopkeeper asked me.
"Go Tenya." I felt my cheeks redden a little.
The shopkeeper smiled, "alright. It should only take me a few minutes to get them printed if you wanted to wait here."
"Okay. Thank you." I bowed to him politely.
He went to print our shirts. Yami pointed to a chair in the corner, insisting I sit down while we wait. I dropped into the chair with a sigh realizing he was only telling me to do it so I didn't find some way to trip and fall.
The shopkeeper returned a few moments later and held up my white shirt first. It read Go Tenya! In big blue letters and had a cute little heart at the base of the exclamation point. Yami snickered. He held up Yami's shirt that had red 'sarcastic' lettering that said 'I'm wearing this shirt against my will, go Mind Wipe!'.
"Yami!" I swatted at him causing him and the shopkeeper to laugh.
"It's perfect." Yami grinned.
The shopkeeper gave us a pretty big discount which I was surprised and grateful for. He put our shirts neatly in a bag and handed it to Yami before waving us off with a smile, "have a great day you two, come back anytime."
We exited the shop and I felt my heart start to race as I spotted Tenya with two of his friends from Class 1A Uraraka and Midoriya. They were all wearing their gym uniforms and it appeared they must have been training for the Sports Festival and were taking a quick meal break as they headed toward a healthy café. I couldn't stop the small goofy dreamy smile that spread across my lips the moment I saw my knight in shining armor.
"Oh boy." Yami chuckled, "you going to start drooling?"
My face flushed scarlet.
"HEY FOUR EYES!" Yami yelled across the street without any regard for all the random people on the street and sidewalks he was going to startle in the process.
Tenya, Uraraka and Midoriya paused near the door of the café and turned in our direction. My face felt like it was on fire. "Y-Yami!" I cried and swatted at him.
It had zero effect. Yami chuckled and caught my good arm in his before pulling me across the street to join the trio. Tenya ran part of the way to meet us. He reached me and I felt a fluttering sensation in my tummy like hundreds of butterflies were flapping their wings crazily in excitement as he smiled at me.
"Good afternoon, Tara." He offered me a polite gentlemanly bow that sort of made me feel like a princess and made the flush in my cheeks spread across my entire face and spill down my neck.
"G-good afternoon, Tenya." My voice faltered a little as I got lost in his dreamy eyes.
"I'm going to vomit." Yami released my arm from his as Tenya offered me an arm like a perfect gentleman. I was sure my entire body was bright red like a tomato now.
"What are you two up to today?" Tenya asked politely including Yami in his inquiry.
Yami smirked and dug out the shirt I'd made for the festival tomorrow, "Tar-Bear needed to cheer on her knight in shining armor in the festival tomorrow."
"Y-Yami!" I squealed embarrassed.
Tenya's cheeks flushed with color, "I'm honored." He smiled at me as he gently steered me back toward his friends. "Would you two like to join us for a bite to eat?"
I looked over at Yami. He shrugged.
"If it's no trouble." I looked to Uraraka and Midoriya.
"No trouble at all. You're always welcome to join us." Uraraka smiled.
Tenya adjusted his grip on me so that he was practically promenading me to the counter to order our food because it offered me more support. He made me feel like a princess and I couldn't wipe the goofy smile off my face. We all ordered our food before going to find a table.
Tenya pulled my chair out for me and I saw several girls smack their boyfriends at nearby tables as they watched the display. A few older people in the café nodded approvingly, I thought I heard someone remark "chivalry's not dead after all" and my face turned a bright shade of red as everyone looked in our direction.
"Jeez, Boy Scout's hella smooth." Yami sounded almost impressed as he took a seat next to me.
"Yeah, no kidding." Midoriya said in somewhat of a daze.
Uraraka giggled, "maybe the three of us should get our own table."
"Huh?" Tenya looked up at his friends, "This table seats six, we can all sit here."
Yami nearly fell off his chair laughing. Uraraka shook her head and held back a laugh before taking a seat. Midoriya looked a little confused at what was so funny before taking the seat next to Uraraka.
Tenya sat across from me and I felt my heart skip a beat. As we waited for our food to be prepared, Midoriya asked everyone why they wanted to be a hero, though looked a little embarrassed as he forgot Yami and I didn't actually intend to be at UA nor had any desire to be heroes. Yami broke through the tension with one of his jokes.
"I generally hate people and society as a whole and have zero desire to save anyone, except for maybe Tar-Bear." Yami shrugged.
Everyone looked to Yami warily.
Tenya piped up to deflect some of the tension and awkwardness, "I come from a long line of heroes, but I was really inspired by my older brother, Tensei the Turbo Hero Ingenium." He smiled proudly.
I couldn't help but smile. He really admired his older brother. I'd heard a little about Ingenium he was quite popular, the paper had been talking about sending me to get some shots of him sometime soon since he'd sell really well and the editor wanted to run most eligible hero bachelor article.
"I hope to be a hero as cool and noble as him some day." Tenya smiled, his eyes filled with admiration and determination as our food arrived.
"You're already the coolest and most noble hero in my opinion." I smiled brightly before realizing that might have been a little embarrassing to just blurt out. My face reddened.
Tenya's face was a matching shade of scarlet.
Yami dramatically shoved his food away from him, "I can't eat this, I have too many cavities from you two."
I looked to him curiously as he took a drink of his water, "should we call a dentist?"
Yami nearly died choking on his drink as he burst into a fit of laughter. He never answered me about the dentist though and pretended nothing had happened. I made a mental note to find him an affordable dentist within walking distance of the apartment, just in case.
We made it through our meal with zero casualties. Tenya and his friends still had no idea what Yami's name was but he didn't seem to mind. We bid them farewell and Yami and I headed back to my apartment.
"When do you think you'll tell Tenya your name?" I pondered.
"As I'm giving my speech at your wedding as your Best Man." He shrugged.
"Am I allowed to have a Best Man?" I asked curiously before realizing that he'd insinuated Tenya and I were going to get married one day. My face burned and I quickly buried it behind my hair causing Yami to chuckle.
I recovered after a moment and leaned against him with a smile, "that's good otherwise you would have had to wear a dress."
Yami shrugged, "as long as its black I don't care."
I couldn't help but giggle, feeling giddy by our conversation topic.
After we got back to the apartment, Yami left to go check on his mother. As much as he liked to pretend he didn't give a damn about her, he still went to check on her from time to time. He said he'd stop by for groceries on his way home and took some money from the grocery jar on the counter.
No more than ten minutes after Yami left, my phone started to ring. I glanced at the screen, it was Stacey, from the newspaper. I hurried to answer it, "hello?"
"Hey Tara! Is this a bad time?" She asked worried.
"No not really, did you need something?" I asked politely.
"I know you're still recovering, so feel free to say no, but we heard Ingenium is in Hosu right now, and you know we've been trying to get some pictures of him in action for awhile now for that new 'hero bachelor' column the editor wants to run...we'll take care of transportation, but you have to leave now, who knows how long he'll be in Hosu, he's after the elusive Hero Killer."
"Oh." Stacey and the editor had been talking about getting shots of Ingenium for a while. If I left now, I could still make it back in time for the Sports Festival tomorrow. "Sure. I'll grab my gear and head out."
"You're the best!" Stacey gushed and hung up so she could text me all my travel arrangements as I packed up my gear. It was a little difficult with one arm but I managed. I wrote Yami a hurried note telling him I'd be back late and not to wait up.
Two hours later I found myself in Hosu, just as the sun began to set. I wandered around the city until I spotted a small crowd of people. There was a gaggle of girls around a hero wearing a suit of armor similar to Tenya's, it was Ingenium, Tenya's older brother. Shyly I inched forward using my quirk so no one would notice me. I got a few pictures and decided to follow him a little to see if I could get any action shots. He seemed a little more laid back than Tenya and somewhat of a flirt but I could still see the noble qualities Tenya admired about him.
Usually when I tailed people, I had two functioning hands so I could sift through footage as I walked, but not this time. When it seemed like a safe time to take a break I went to sit on a bench and sift through my footage. I'd gotten a few action-y shots, one super cute one of him rushing to rescue a kitten from a tree and various other minor rescues but noting that I figured the newspaper would be wowed by. I remembered Stacey mentioning Ingenium was here after the Hero Killer and shivered. I really hoped he wasn't here.
Deciding I should try to get another good shot, I began my search for Ingenium again. It was starting to get late. Many of the shops and restaurants in Hosu were closing for the evening. I had a few decent shots and I was sure Stacey would love the kitten rescue photo, perhaps I should head back. As I passed by a dark alley, I heard what sounded like a grunt of pain and something tearing through flesh. A soft gasp escaped me and I suddenly willed myself to disappear before inching down the alley.
My heart fell as I spotted Ingenium seeming to be frozen in place against a wall behind one of the dumpsters out of view of the main road. There was a terrifying man standing before him with a wicked looking blade in his hand. The Hero Killer! There was already so much blood! My mind suddenly went blank, the only thing I could think about was how hurt Tenya would be if his brother died and I moved without thinking as the Hero Killer made a move to deliver the finishing blow.
"NO!" I hurled one of my disposable cameras at the back of his head and focused on Ingenium willing him to disappear. My body flickered into view; I'd focused too much on Ingenium willing him to disappear that I'd lost focus on myself. "EEP!" I squealed as the terrifying villain's red eyes that were practically aglow flicked in my direction. I managed to refocus and keep both Ingenium and myself concealed.
"What the-?" The man stared at the spot his victim had been moments before. His eerie gaze flicked back to where he knew I'd been standing moments before and he hurled a blade in my direction with a deadly precision. It tore into the side of my throat and I dropped to the ground but somehow, miraculously, managed to keep focusing on my quirk through sheer willpower alone.
The scary man seemed frustrated, due to my quirk, it seemed like his knife had also just disappeared into nothingness. "Where did they go?" He reached out to touch Ingenium, his hand brushed up against the chest of his armor but because of my quirk I knew it didn't register, I was able to warp his perception with my quirk though I wasn't sure how much longer I could hold out with the knife now in my neck.
Realizing his quarry was lost, he disappeared down the opposite end of the alley. Once I was sure he was long gone, I dropped my hold on my quirk as blood began to pool in the back of my throat from the knife in my neck. I reached for my phone with trembling hands and sent Yami my location with a single word 'Ambulance' before I fell into the welcoming darkness.
