Chapter Ten

I woke to the smell of fresh pastries and rose from my bed like a zombie. Following the delectable smell to the kitchen, I found Yami pulling a fresh batch of cinnamon rolls out of the oven. He looked silly wearing one of my frilly aprons over his goth attire. He turned, sensing my approach and cracked a smile.

"Your hair is a hot mess, Tar-Bear." He snickered.

"I smelled yummy things." I mumbled sleepily as I dropped into one of the chairs at the kitchen bar.

Yami set the tray of cinnamon rolls down before ruffling my hair with his oven mitt clad hands. It was delightfully warm and probably made my hair ten times more staticky. He withdrew and cracked up laughing. I was sure the majority of my hair was now standing on end.

"How's it feel to no longer be a cyborg?" Yami asked curiously.

I looked down at my arm, it was technically healed but it still felt a little stiff and sore and had some bruising. Definitely better than being shattered so I wasn't about to complain. "Much better."

Yami smiled.

After a delectable breakfast, I was able to take a shower with zero difficulty and get myself ready for school without Yami's help. As I was getting ready for school, I wondered if Yami would go back home now that I wasn't injured anymore. I didn't want to be a burden on my friend but I also didn't want him to leave, it was nice not being alone all the time.

As I was stepping into my shoes by the door getting ready to leave, Yami threw me a curious look sensing I was deep in thought, "what are you worrying about over there?"

"I'm not worrying." I replied with a squeak.

"You are." Yami said bluntly.

I frowned.

"So?" He poked me lightly in the side as we exited my apartment.

"I'm all healed now..." I began but cut off.

"Must be new territory for you with as accident prone as you are. I'm sure you'll find a way to get into a body cast by the end of the week, don't worry." He teased me.

"I will not!" I swatted at him and somehow managed to trip over absolutely nothing and nearly go flying down a flight of stairs.

Yami easily caught me and righted me. "You were saying?"

My face burned. "...are you going to leave?"

"Huh?" Yami stared at me blankly.

"I thought you moved in because of Blaine and then stayed to help me because I was injured..." I said softly.

"And Blaine is still a concern and evidence of you trying to nose dive down the stairs a second ago, you clearly need me to stick around, sorry Ghost Girl, you're stuck with me until you move in with your knight in shining armor, then you're his problem." Yami smirked.

My face flushed scarlet causing Yami to chuckle.

Once we got outside, I took a glance up at the sky and frowned. "Maybe we should turn back for an umbrella." I suggested.

Yami looked thoughtful for a moment before draping an arm across my shoulders. "I have a better idea." He whisked me off in the direction of UA.

After a few blocks, I smiled as I spotted Shinso walking ahead of us and grabbed hold of Yami's arm before racing off in his direction. Yami let out a groan of protest but followed along, presumably to keep me from tripping over nothing. Shinso turned as he heard us running toward him and seemed surprised to see us.

"Shinso! I'm so sorry we weren't there to cheer you on during the festival." I apologized once we got within reach. "We made a shirt and everything."

Shinso smiled, "it's alright. I heard you were off getting yourself hurt again." His smile turned to a frown.

"Ah...yeah...I guess...sorry." I mumbled.

Shinso shot a scowl at Yami, "weren't you supposed to be keeping her safe?"

"What was that?!" Yami growled and pulled his gaze away from his frantic scanning.

"Yami, what are you looking around for?" I asked him curiously.

"By my amazing calculations the sky is about to open up and we're going to get soaked in about 5 seconds and in 6 seconds your boy scout in shining armor will fall from the sky or pull up in a limo and whisk you to safety." Yami pointed.

As he predicted, the sky opened up above us and I let out a squeal of surprise at the first few cold drops as one somehow managed to land on the back of my neck and send a shiver down my spine. A car honked on the street next to us and Yami reached out to catch me as I triped, startled by the sound. A smirk twisted across his lips as we all turned to see a nice car pulling over beside us.

"Am I great or what?" Yami snickered.

"You'd definitely have been burned at the stake for being a witch in the past." Shinso remarked dryly, "it's a shame it's no longer a custom."

Yami's smirk grew as the back door of the car opened. Tenya stepped out with an umbrella in hand and hurriedly shielded me from the rain. "Tara," He paused as he looked at Yami and Shinso.

"Third wheels." Yami supplied for him before shoving Shinso in the direction of the school.

"What are you doing?!" Shinso growled in annoyance.

"You have an umbrella, you can cover us." Yami hissed.

"I'm not covering you, you can melt for all I care." Shinso snapped back as he opened his umbrella. Despite his words he held it above the both of them.

I watched my friends warily as they left me behind.

"Would you like a ride to school?" Tenya asked.

Yami and Shinso were now almost out of sight and seemed to be moving quickly away so I couldn't try to catch up with them. "If it's not too much trouble." I blushed.

"No trouble at all." Tenya smiled and placed his hand to the small of my back to usher me to the open car door. He held the umbrella securely above me shielding me from the elements until I anxiously got into the backseat.

He took a seat beside me and gracefully folded and shook out the umbrella in one fluid motion before closing the door. I was enveloped in warmth from the heated seats and relaxed in the luxurious and comfortable seat.

"Thanks for coming to my rescue, Tenya." I smiled.

"Anytime." He smiled in return as he cleaned the few raindrops from his glasses.

"How is Tensei doing?" I asked hopefully.

His smile turned somewhat somber, "we're still not sure if he'll be able to walk again."

"Oh." My heart fell, "I'm so sorry, Tenya."

He turned to me and his expression softened, "he's alive, thanks to you, and that's what matters most." Despite his words of reassurance I knew his heart wasn't in it. There was a dark edge to his voice and a very serious look in his eyes. A look of determination and hatred.

I slipped my hand in his, "Tenya?"

He turned to me curiously, pulling himself from whatever dark twisted thoughts he'd allowed himself to fall into.

"Please take care of yourself, I don't know what I'd do if anything happened to you." I said so softly I wasn't sure he had heard me.

"No need to worry." He smiled, but I could see guilt swirling in his blue eyes behind his glasses.

I bit my lip, "y-you're not planning on going after the Hero Killer...are you?"

His eyes widened. "Why would you think that?"

I squeezed his hand in mine, "I just have a really bad feeling...please don't..."

He squeezed my hand back as the car slowed to a stop outside of the UA campus. "You have nothing to worry about." His gaze flicked away, revealing his deceit and he opened the door and swiftly opened the umbrella before gently pulling me with him as he exited the car.

Expertly he shielded us with the umbrella as if he'd gone to a school that taught people how to properly hold an umbrella. I thought for a moment wondering if such a school existed. Tenya had gone to a really fancy private school, perhaps proper umbrella techniques had been an elective. The car pulled away as we started walking toward school.

Once we stepped inside, I spotted Mr. Aizawa and Present Mic looking as if they were waiting for someone. They spotted us and approached. Their gazes fell on mine and Tenya's interlocked hands and I felt my face flush scarlet. I hadn't even realized I was still holding his hand. Why didn't he let go? I quickly released his hand from my hold thinking there must be some kind of school policy against hand holding.

"Mr. Aizawa, you got your bandages removed." I remarked with a smile.

"You, with me." He pointed at me and tapped his foot.

Tenya paused mid umbrella shake, "is Tara in some kind of trouble, Mr. Aizawa?"

"As a matter of fact, yes." Mr. Aizawa grumbled, "come on." He turned and headed off towards the teacher's lounge.

I blanched and waved farewell to Tenya before following after Mr. Aizawa anxiously. Was it because we were holding hands? That didn't seem right, then Tenya would probably also be in trouble.

"Is it because I missed the Sports Festival?" I asked curiously as I struggled to keep up with his quick strides.

Present Mic snickered as he trailed along behind me. "More the why." He offered.

"Huh?" I jumped once we got to the teachers lounge and Mr. Aizawa spun around so quickly I hadn't realized he'd moved until I felt something swat me on the head. "ow." I squeaked and rubbed my now sore head and looked to see him brandishing his attendance roster menacingly.

"What were you thinking?" Mr. Aizawa grumbled.

"I was thinking those things were too thin to do any real damage but now I'm starting to think you can concuss a person with it." I mumbled as I rubbed my head.

"Oh, is Tara being a problem child again?" Principal Nezu fell out of one of the ceiling tiles nearly giving me a heart attack in the process.

No one questioned his entrance. The other teachers in the lounge acted as if this was a perfectly acceptable way to enter a room.

"Yep." Present Mic responded with a chuckle.

"W-what?!" I squeaked. "What did I do?"

"What possessed you to go after the Hero Killer?" Mr. Aizawa growled and swung the roster at me again but I managed to become imperceivable and though it connected and stung me with pain, Mr. Aizawa perceived it as missing as I vanished from sight. He activated his quirk and I flickered back into view rubbing my aching head.

"I didn't go after anyone." I squealed. "I was just there for work."

His gaze fell on the new scar across my throat, "the lack of injuries and new scar says otherwise."

"At this rate you should consider transferring to the hero course." Principal Nezu piped up.

"I can't do that. Yami would kill me." I blanched, "...also...I really don't want to be a hero."

"Hm, what to do. I had two delinquents transferred here so we could keep an eye on them after they broke into our school twice...what's the next step when one of the delinquents goes rogue and tries to fight the Hero Killer and they're not even a hero course student."

"I didn't fight anyone." I squeaked. "EEP! Please don't send me to jail!" I panicked.

Principal Nezu laughed maniacally.

Present Mic chuckled and decided to come to my rescue, "relax, kid. You're not in trouble, everyone's just concerned about you and your very close relationship with danger."

Principal Nezu stopped his maniacal laughter, "very well, I've decided." Was he laughing that way to think? He straightened up standing at his full height which was just shy of 3 feet, "since you seem to be a magnet for trouble and live on your own, the staff and I will conduct random home visits to check in on you and make sure you're alright and not left to your own devices for too long."

"Um...I don't live alone, Yami lives with me...and it's really not necessar-." I began to protest but cut off as Mr. Aizawa threw me a dark look. "...yep...sounds great..."

"It's only temporary, ideally we'll have a better alternative in the near future." Principal Nezu muttered somewhat to himself before pulling out a small device that looked somewhat like a crossbow with a grappling hook on the end. He shot it at the ceiling where he'd fallen out of before. It connected to something within the open ceiling tile and he pressed a button on the side of the device and slowly drifted up to the ceiling.

"...is that going to happen in my apartment?" I asked in awe as the ceiling tile suddenly shifted back into place once he disappeared.

"It's possible." Present Mic chuckled.

"...that won't be terrifying at all..." I laughed uneasily.

"If you can go two weeks without a trip to the hospital, we'll ease up a bit." Present Mic reassured me.

"I can do that." I smiled confidently.

"I hope so, I wagered that you'd make it." Present Mic offered me a reassuring smile.

I glanced over at Aizawa, "I gave you three days." He shrugged.

I groaned.

The ceiling tile Principal Nezu had disappeared through suddenly fell, heading right for me. Present Mic and Mr. Aizawa simultaneously reached out and pulled me back a step to avoid the ceiling tile.

"I may have been too optimistic with three days." Mr. Aizawa sighed.

"Are you cursed?" Present Mic asked me in awe.

"I-I don't th-think so." I squeaked in terror as I looked at the ceiling tile that had left a fracture in the floor. That definitely would have been a hospital trip. Shakily, I headed for the exit.

"Hey, Tara, do me a favor and avoid stairs." Present Mic called after me.

I sighed, "I'll try my best."
