Chapter Three
"Hey, Ghost Girl, can you print this picture for me, I want it blown up and framed in my living room." Yami called into my closet of a bedroom startling me from my slumber.
I fell out of my bed and nearly cracked my skull open on my nightstand. I'd completely forgotten I wasn't alone and slept in a tank top and a pair of panties, what if I'd gone sleep walking? Not that I was normally a sleep walker. I tugged on a pair of shorts and scrambled out into the living room to see what he was talking about.
I found Yami, dressed head to toe in black, his long dark hair swept into a ponytail with a few shorter spikey bits framing his dark make-up bedecked face. It wasn't even six in the morning and he was rocking the guyliner and black lipstick. Did he carry spares on his person? I didn't own any makeup.
A yawn escaped me as I crossed the room and leaned over him from behind to get a look at my small laptop screen. It was one of the pictures I'd taken with my flash to blind Blaine. His nose was broken and bloody, his face scrunched up in the process of being blinded, it was NOT an attractive photo, but it made me feel a lot better to look at it.
"Sure, why not. Any other winners?" I smiled as I swiped the other half of his toaster pop pastry. He caught my hand in his and stared in awe at my bare arm and wrist, they'd gotten a lot darker overnight, the entirety of my right arm from wrist to shoulder was black and blue, my left arm was luckily only from elbow to shoulder.
"I'll kill those bastards." Yami snarled, he was shaking in rage.
"I'd be happier if we never saw them again." I said meekly as I pulled my hand free and popped the toaster pastry into my mouth.
My phone buzzed from atop the kitchen counter causing me to jump. Yami frowned noticing my jumpiness. I was worried, before Yami had mentioned anything, the idea of Blaine seeking revenge for getting him expelled never crossed my mind. Now it was all I could think about. He haunted my dreams. I'd woken up more tired than when I'd gone to bed which made me believe I'd spent the entire night fighting Blaine and his goons all night long in my dreams.
I looked to the caller ID, it was Stacey from the newspaper. I scrambled to answer before it could go to voicemail. "Good Morning, Stacey. Is everything alright?"
"Good Morning Tara." Stacey who was usually all smiles, sounded nervous, "So, our main photographer is out sick today and...this is going to sound awful...we're horrible adults...would you be able to skip school today? Oh god it sounds worse out loud." She groaned, "Normally we'd let it go, no big, there's always news, but we heard All Might, the number one hero and UA's newest faculty member is going to be training first years at their off campus USJ facility. You always get the greatest pictures and get right in the action; do you think you could scope it out and try to get some shots? Please."
UA? "Is that allowed?"
"Oh honey, we're journalists, we go where there's a story, if you get busted, we'll get you out of it, don't worry." Stacey reassured me. "Please, you're our only hope."
My stomach churned unpleasantly at the thought of breaking into a UA facility, again. However, the thought of possibly seeing Iida again made my heart feel lighter. "O-Okay, I'll do it."
"You're the best! Thanks Tara! Kisses!" Stacey hung up.
Yami looked to me curiously, "You look a little pale, who was that?"
"Work."
"The newspaper?"
I nodded as I took a seat at the small folding patio set I'd got as a dining table and chairs.
"What did they want?"
"They want me to sneak into UA and get pictures for them." I groaned.
Yami nearly fell off his chair laughing at this. "I'm starting to think you might be cursed, Ghost Girl."
"It's not funny! I'm freaking out! What if I get caught again?!"
Yami crossed the room and lightly ruffled my mussed up dark brown hair, "I'm in."
"What?!"
"I didn't really want to go to school today anyway." He shrugged.
"Ugh! We're going to jail! I just know it!"
"That's half the fun." Yami winked.
Sighing I retreated to my room to change and brush out my hair. I pulled my hair back in a high ponytail before slipping into a pair of stretchy black jeggings, a tight fitted black tank top with a baggy grey t-shirt over top that fell off my left shoulder a little. Chancing a glance at my reflection in the mirror I grimaced, my arms looked somewhat dead and Hollywood corpselike the bruising was so dark it was black in most places with blue and purple around the edges. I kind of looked like how they portrayed people with necrosis in films. I looked at my face and sighed, it was bad, I had a black eye, the bruising spread all the way from my eye down to my chin and my lip was busted open and crusted in dried blood. Maybe if we got caught today, they'd just take pity on me for looking like I'd just had a building fall on the upper part of my body.
When I returned from my room, I found Yami waiting for me by the door with two of my concealable cameras in hand. I grabbed one of my old film cameras for fun and slipped on a pair of grey sneakers before slipping out the door with Yami in toe. We got to the off-site facility early. Yami hid in my shadow as he had the day before and I used my quirk to get us closer to the building to take a few shots of the area. The digitals that Yami had grabbed were acting up.
"What's going on?" Yami asked me from within my shadow.
"The digital cameras aren't taking any pictures." I replied as I withdrew my film camera from the case at my hip and snapped a couple of photos. I only had a few extra rolls of film, I couldn't take as many shots as I could with the digitals and wasn't able to see them right away, but it would have to do.
"That's strange, try your phone." Yami suggested.
I dug my phone out of my back pocket, I didn't have any signal and it was acting kind of buggy. "That's bizarre, I don't have a signal and none of my apps are working. Think this is some kind of dead zone?"
Yami slipped out of my shadow as we hid in the bushes to the side of the building out of the view of the security cameras. "That doesn't seem like a smart thing for a school that trains heroes. What if there was an accident during training you'd think they'd want people to be able to call for help in an emergency." He frowned. "Something's coming."
We fell silent and looked to the parking lot to see a bus roll up. Some students disembarked from the bus and I felt my heart skip a beat as I spotted Tenya among them. He was wearing a really cool hero uniform and kind of looked like a knight in shining armor. It appeared to be like full body plate armor but not made out of a heavy metal material, it looked lighter and built for mobility.
"What the hell is that boy scout wearing? He looks like a ridiculous knight from some kind of fair-." Yami paused as he caught me staring, "You fangirling over there?"
I swatted at him furiously trying to keep quiet only causing him to laugh silently.
We waited until Iida and his classmates went inside. "Something's not right. Stacey said All Might was supposed to be here, that's why she wanted me taking pictures."
"Maybe he's already inside?" Yami shrugged.
"Maybe." I agreed and we slunk around the building to a utility ladder that led to a platform along the side of the dome shaped building so we could peer through one of the windows and get an aerial view of the training facility. Hopefully I'd be able to get some decent shots, the zoom on my camera was pretty good if I could just keep myself still enough to keep in focus, I should be okay.
I peered through the window just as I noticed the lights inside flicker a few times.
"What the hell kind of training is this?" Yami gaped as he had his face glued to the window next to mine. He pointed to the center of the facility were a giant vortex of darkness sat in front of a massive fountain spilling out what looked like a horde of villains. "Seems a little intense for first years."
I scanned the window and found the students near the entrance being protected by a pro hero in what looked like a space suit, it was Thirteen the Rescue Hero. "I don't think this is training, I think this is for real." I pressed my camera to the glass and tried to snap a few shots, in the event the criminals escaped we'd need to be able to identify them, but I wouldn't be able to get good focus through the glass. I spotted an open window above us, I couldn't reach it even if I jumped. If Yami could lift me, I might be able to reach it.
One of the teachers was trying to take on the horde of villains alone, the students and the space suit teacher were all near the entrance facing a blob of darkness. It didn't look good. My phone still wasn't working and my digital cameras were useless. I dumped them into Yami's hands.
"We need to do something! This is serious!" I panicked.
"What the hell do you think we can do? We're not even heroes in training, we're civilians!" Yami snapped.
"It doesn't matter. I need you to give me a boost to that open window, I'm going to try and get some shots, if any of the villains escape we'll need to be able to identify them. You need to take our phones and run until you get a signal and call for help."
"You're not going in there alone!"
"I won't be alone, there's an entire class of heroes in training and two pro's. Besides I can use my quirk to stay incognito and you're faster and more coordinated you'll be able to reach help faster."
Yami swore under his breath before taking my digital cameras and my phone and tucking them in his pocket before lacing his fingers together and holding his hands out for me to step in. "For the record, this plan sucks and I don't like it."
"Noted."
"And if you get yourself killed, I'll make you regret it." He snapped.
"But then Ghost Girl would fit." I attempted to crack a joke suited for his dark and twisted humor.
The corners of his painted lips twitched, "So not the time. Be careful." He turned and raced for the emergency ladder as I shimmied in through the window.
My nerves were shot, my heart was pounding and adrenaline coursed through my veins as I landed on a small ledge inside the dome before snapping as many shots as I could from my vantage point. Once I'd gone through a roll I hurriedly replaced it before trying to climb down the wall of windows and ledges to get to the ground praying no one would notice me and my quirk would hold strong. I was too scared! Yami was right, this was stupid! I was going to get myself killed!
The strange blob of darkness that was near the entrance with the students warped and turned into a dome of darkness surrounding them all. Tenya! My legs trembled as I furiously snapped pictures of all the villains I could spot making sure I got clear images of their faces.
"Please be okay, Tenya." I breathed as I strained to keep myself concealed
Smaller vortexes of darkness opened up above various sections of the facility. My heart dropped as I spotted students falling from the vortex. I strained to see if I could spot Tenya. Breathing a sigh of relief as I didn't see Tenya falling from any of the vortexes, I crept closer to the center of the facility where most of the villains were. As I reached the center I noticed most of the villains were incapacitated except for a strange man with silver hair and strange white severed hands gripping his body all over with one blocking out his face and a strange monster looking thing. I managed to get a close up shot of him and the strange monster with the large muscular body almost bird like beak and exposed brains sticking out of his cranium. He gave me the creeps, they both gave me the creeps. The pro with the white scarf that had stepped in to help Tenya save me from Blaine and his goons looked worn out. He'd taken out so many villains, all on his own.
The strange monster rushed him and caught him by the back of the neck, slamming him face first into the concrete. They were going to kill him! He was all alone! There was no one here to help! My legs wouldn't stop shaking, I was so close to them! I spotted a lead pipe lying on the ground at my feet and picked it up, willing myself to stay hidden, willing myself to be invisible to keep them from noticing me. I ran forward as the strange monster thing was about to deliver a fatal blow before swinging the lead pipe with all my might to his exposed brain.
The moment I struck the monster, I faded into view, losing hold of my quirk. The guy with the scarf stared up at me wide eyed. He hadn't sensed my presence or noticed me at all. Before I could recover and hide myself again, the monster swung one of it's massive fists at me, I uselessly tried to hold up my bruised arms to block myself. There was a sickening crack from my left arm as it connected and I let out a scream as I was sent flying.
My body felt broken as I smacked into the wall just beyond the zone of water past a sinking ship. Darkness clouded my vision as I slid down the wall and slumped into a heap on the ground. I struggled, trying to fight to stay awake to no avail. I slipped into unconsciousness.
