My Immortal

Delirious's POV
I wag my brown tail as I pounce around my favorite teddy bear squeaky toy.  Nipping and biting at it's black soft nose, thrashing my head side to side as I growl at it.  My brothers and sisters run by, jumping up at my food-giver.  I yip in excitement and pant, I hear a doorbell ring and I look towards the door, staring at a young boy who looks around in awe at my home.

He has black hair and brown eyes, his hair shiny, styled in a faux hawk.  My siblings rush over to the edge of the glass, barking at the boy.  I raise my puppy paw to head over, but my eye catches my teddy bear toy, highly distracting.  I bite and snarl at it, dragging the brown animal by its arm around the cage.

I look up, now at the other end of the kennel, away from my brothers and sisters and come face to face with that boy, staring at him through the bars of my enclosure.  He giggles when I lie down on my back and begin to gnaw on my teddy's leg, I roll around, setting him into a fit of laughter.

"That one."  He says, pointing directly at my face, I spit out my toy, a distressed squeak afterwards and lick at his finger, biting a bit as well.

"Hey!" He laughs again retracting his finger, the boy's eyes squinting slightly as he smiles down at me.

My food-giver comes over to me and places his hand under me onto my stomach, lifting me high above everything.  I look down at the boy as he comes closer to me, him grabbing ahold of under my arms as he sets me down on the ground.  The black haired boy turns towards a taller woman with the same hair color and eyes, who hands him a leather circular thingy.  He scoots up in front of me, kneeling down, I jump on to his legs and lick his face.

"Down Del!"

He gently pushes me off, leaving me in a sitting position as I tilt my head at the new word.

Del?

"There."  He sits back and places his hands on his thighs, I notice new pressure on my neck, the reflection of the glass showing that circular thingy attached to me, a charm connected to it.

Delirious

"Evan? You ready to go? I paid for him, he's yours to keep."

Evan... that must be his name.

The young boy nods and looks back at me, cautiously wrapping his arms around me, bringing me off of the cold, white tile.  He adjusts his hold on me and snuggles close to me, giggling slightly when I lick his cheek.

"Welcome to your new family Delirious."

Evan - 14 years old

"Evan! You'll be late for your first day of high school!" My ears perk up when I hear his mother's voice, I stretch alongside my owner.

"Good morning Del~" Evan says with a deep voice, ruffling the fur on my head and smiling sleepily at me.

I sigh happily when he scratches behind my ear, a great sensation flowing through my body. The sweet feeling quickly disappears when he retracts his hand and steps off his bed, I grunt in response and Evan turns to me smiling.

"Here." My owners walks up to me and grabs ahold of the bottom of my snout, cupping it as he turns my head to the right. I feel his lips on my cheek and I wag my tail in response to his kiss for me, he puts his forehead against mine and narrows his eyes.

"Y'all ready for this?"

I growl and fidget around, getting excited for the morning routine we have.

"Yes we are! Let's go! Double time double time!"

Evan laughs and smiles as he runs out of his room, sliding down the staircase railing while I run down at his side incase he falls. He sprints into the kitchen, me not far behind as a certain heavenly flavor fills my nose.

"Bacon..."

Bacon...

I look at Evan and yip, he winks at me and heads to the counter while his mother, also known as my grandmother, cooks more of the delicious human food.

The beautiful breakfast food is dangled in front of my face, instantly grabbing my attention.

"Delirious... sit!"

I turn to Evan and sit down, my eyes wide at the piece of fatty glory in his hands.

"Speak!"

I bark and get into a playful position, bowing down at him.

"And... twirl!"

I push myself off the ground and steady my weight, jumping around in circles on my hind legs.

"Good boy Del! Who's a good boy?!"

Me! Me! I am!

The Asian boy throws the delectable food into the air, I jump up and catch it in my mouth, nearly swallowing it whole.

Evan quickly eats, sneaking me more bacon beneath the table, my head sitting in his lap. He sprints upstairs and gets dressed, grabbing a pack and putting it on his back.

He runs down the stairs and hops down the last one, me right on his tail.

"Bye mom! I'll see you after school!"

My owner turns to me and leans down, cupping my face once again and smushing my lips. "And I'll see you later, I love you."

I bark in response and wag my tail along with a couple kisses, Evan petting my head a once or twice before he leaves again for another week, or a year. I'm not too sure.

The yellow bus comes into the front of our house, my best friend hops on, I bark at him again, standing on the couch as I look out the front window.

He turns back and smiles when he meets my eyes through the glass, waving at me. I yip and lie my head between my front paws, resting on the back of the couch as he sits down and goes off.

I jump down from the couch and turn into the kitchen and stand at the back door, doing a slight dance and prance with my paws at the wooden floor beneath me.

My grandma looks at me and smiles. "Per our daily routine, out ya go."

She opens the door for me and I walk through it, bolting to the corner of my fence where I meet my other friends that live by me. We all meet at the same time, all of us panting from running around all morning with our owners.

"Marcel left." Nogla the bulldog says, a chihuahua running up beside him.

"Slow down next time Nogla! I can't run as fast as you!" Lui whines, lying down as he catches his breath.

My other friend Mini shows up, sitting down at the fence, "Tyler left as well, I wonder where they go."

I nod at the beagle, looking down at him. Next, my friend that lives diagonal of me runs up.

"Sorry I'm late, damn squirrels..." Brock grumbles, the Great Dane looking back towards a tree.

The rest of us mutter in response, lying down or sitting, our daily conversations starting to fire up.

-3 years later-
Delirious - 7 years old
Evan - 17 years old

I curl up on the couch and sigh to myself, Evan hadn't come back home and he hadn't left that yellow bus. It was really dark outside and I missed him dearly, my grandma seemed to be very distraught as well, but she soon fell asleep in her room.

The door opens, and I quickly look up, Evan's scent immediately becoming stronger.

Evan!

I jump off the couch and run up to him, hopping up and down as I paw at his chest.

"Down Delirious! Leave me alone!"

He shoves me down rather rough and bolts up the stairs, I try and keep up but must stop when he slams his door on my face. My ears flop down and I curl my tail between my legs, saddened at my owner's behavior.

Did I do something bad?

I sit and slide down onto the floor, leaning against his door, my eyes closed as I'm whimpering and whining until I feel the door move from behind me.

My eyes move from his feet to his face, the feeling of sadness and depression flowing off of him in great waves. I nuzzle against his leg, rubbing myself along his pant leg. Evan sniffles and sits on his bed after shutting the door behind me, I rest my head on the edge of his bed, awaiting my invitation.

He sniffles and smiles sadly at me. "Come 'ere Del..." He whispers, a sad tone in his voice as it cracks when he pats next to him.

I hop up, sitting beside him, I notice his face is wet, water coming out from his glossy brown eyes, many seem to have been there, dried onto his lickable cheeks. The eyes I've loved since that day he took me in as his. I scoot closer to him as he rests his chin in his hand. I lick his cheek, the liquid is rather salty, but I want to do anything to get rid of the sadness it's bringing to him.

"She left me Del... all because of something I did."

I tilt my head, he turns and looks into my brown and golden flecked eyes.

What did you do?

"It's all because I looked at this guy's profile picture for too long... apparently it's not "normal"." He bends his fingers on his hand, croaking as he breaks down again.

He covers his face with his hands, which I refuse to accept. I paw at his thigh and whine, stuffing my nose in between his hands.

"Stop Delirious." I disobey him, and continue, stepping all over him, he gives up and I push him onto his bed.

He lies down on his back and uncovers his face, his eyes red and puffy as he strokes my fur. He sighs and looks down at me, my body lying on top of him with my chin resting on his beating heart.

"What would I do without you Del?"

Probably be dead.

The boy chuckles and breaths in, "I'd probably be dead."

My ears perk up, my tail sliding side to side when he massages my back, repeating what I thought.

"I love you, my sweet angelic baby."

I love you too, my amazing best friend and owner.

-One year later-
Delirious - 8 years old
Evan - 18 years old

I pushed open the white door and trotted into the small room, sniffing around and in things until my nose touched water.

And I inhaled it.

I snort and hack, attempting to get it out of my nostrils, I finally get over it and look back into the bowl.

I didn't know they got me a new bowl!

I delightfully dig in, slurping up the water, making quite a bit of noise. I lick my lips and continue to drink from the seemingly never ending bowl until Evan nearly breaks the door when he slams it open.

"Delirious! What are you doing?!"

I jump in surprise and look down at the white bowl, and back at him.

Drinking. Duh.

My owner rubs his face, groaning. "You're not supposed to drink from the toilet, silly dog. Don't do it again." He shakes his finger at me and walks out, patting his leg, urging me to follow.

I comply and walk beside him down the stairs, now seeing that he is in much bigger and bulkier clothes than usual. He smiles down at me and rubs the back of my neck, I close my eyes in bliss.

"Hey mom, do you think Del can come today?"

I look at my grandma, confused a tad yet intrigued on where I'd be going.

"You mean for a... ride?" She slaps her thighs and looks at me.

My eyes widen when I hear that saying, "ride". My favorite thing, it's when we get into their car and go anywhere, and I can hang my head out the window, my tongue sticking out the entire time as I smell many things.

I jump around Evan's legs and yip and bark, prancing around. He giggles and pats his chest, inviting me up, I put my paws on his torso and stand in front of him.

"Game time!" I learned to put my forehead against his, and stay nearly completely still.

"Who's gonna win?!" I grumble in response, he smirks.

"Aurora Tigers that's who!"

My grandmother cheers and Evan grabs my arms. "Wooooo!"

I howl back at my owner, earning a smile from him.

"Good boy! Let's go!"

I drop back down onto all fours and sprint to the side of the car, ready to go wherever it is we're heading. As long as it's with Evan.

~ Little time skip ~

Evan's mom hooks up a rope to my... collar I think it is? The Asian boy steps out, a black bag slung over his shoulder.

"Ready?"

"I'm more than ready, and especially happy now that Delirious gets to watch me. Right buddy?" Evan leans down and coos at me, I kiss him in return.

He laughs and wipes at his nose and upper lip, right where I kissed him.

We walk into a building and the temperature becomes very cold, I ignore it for now, but shiver slightly. Evan kneels down in front of me, grabbing ahold of my jaw yet again.

"I love you Del, wish me luck!" He turns his cheek towards me, I take the chance and give him a sloppy kiss, him giggling at me when he stands up.

"Good boy, I'll see you soon."

I tilt my head and he walks away, I yelp and pull at the leash, wanting to see him again.

"Hey buddy, you'll see your friend again alright?"

I look back at his mom and hunch down slightly, coldness now no longer a problem to me. She leads me up many steps and sits down on one, patting the seat next to her, I plop myself down, huffing.

"Throwing a fit are we? Here, keep this around you, it'll get cold in here."

I smell Evan's scent stronger than before and feel warmness consume my cold body, realizing something is on top, which I rather enjoy. I snuggle more into the material and soak in the scent, drifting off lightly until I hear a buzz.

My eyes pop open and I jump, my grandma's hand instantly soothing me, "It's alright, look, there's your friend."

She points towards an oval shaped area, fenced in with clear plastic barriers. I watch as many people skate out onto the ice, but my tail starts to move as soon as I spot the black hair and brown eyes, an Asian face as well. He looks at me and waves, smiling brightly, his eyes squinting as well.

My entire butt shakes, becoming excited when Evan places something on his head, gliding across the ice on what shows to be very sharp metal. The white lights dim down, other colorful ones starting to show up. Music rings throughout, my eyes stay on Evan however, watching him move a stick around, pushing a black piece around with them.

I'll never forget that day, the one where Evan scored the entire time, I think he scored a new... personal best? He seemed to be very excited about that, and of course I was happy for him.

2 years later
Delirious - 10 years old
Evan - 20 years old

Evan looked down at me and smiled, running his hand from the top of my neck to my lower back.  I groan in response, he furrows his eyes and makes an 'O'.

"You hungry?"

I lift my head and look at him, showing I'm interested, he moves his computer and stands, stretching his arms and walking to our kitchen.

He quickly fixes up my dinner, throwing some meat in as well, I lick my lips, my mouth watering.

"Don't forget your pills buddy, here."  He hands me a hot dog covered in peanut butter, which is my personal favorite if you ask me.

I quickly gobble it down, my legs have started to ache but ever since he started feeding me those things, I've felt better.  He cares about me, and I like that.

I'm halfway through my food when I hear the doorbell, I bark at it, abandoning my food as I trot as fast as possible towards the door.  Evan steps in front of me and opens it, a man about my owner's age stepping in.  I look at him and sniff, Evan and the guy hugging, something about him just didn't seem right.

"Hey buddy! Is this Del?" The boy looks over and back at me, extending his hand out.

I sniff and instantly deny him, baring my teeth at the stranger as I growl, my fur standing up.

I don't like this man.

"Delirious! Where are your manners? I'm so sorry, he usually likes everyone, you're the first he's ever growled at."

My owner loops a couple fingers into my collar, holding me back as I glare at the boy.  He looks down at me, his eyes wide, whatever he does, he better not stare at me for too long.

Get out.  You're a bad person for my owner.

I bark at him, attempting to free myself from the grip the Asian has on me.  "Delirious! What is wrong with you?!" He pulls me into a separate room, excusing himself while I continue to glare.

Evan closes the door behind us and kneels down to my level.  "What is wrong with you?!" He whisper yells, anger in his voice.

I avoid eye contact and stare at the door, the man's smell is near, he must be listening.  His scent sickens me, I don't know why, but I do know I don't want my owner near him.  I growl at the door and Evan turns toward it, raising his eyebrow as he stands up again, opening it.  As I predicted, the boy falls down in front of me, apparently he was leaning against it, I grumble at him.

"I think there is a reason he doesn't like you... I don't know what it is but... you need to go."

The male quickly scrambles up, standing in my owner's face.  "What? You're gonna take the dog's side? He can't even think!"

Think about this.

I nip at his finger and he yanks it back, cursing at me, he lifts a hand, and Evan grabs it.

"Lay a finger on him, and you won't have an arm."  His voice scared me, it seemed so serious, but I relax when I realize it wasn't directed towards me.

"Evan, babe; it's a dog!"

"Don't call me babe, Kevin, you may leave now."  I raise my nose in the air, flaunting my victory over the uneasy man.

He curses under his breath and trudges out, slamming the door.  Evan sighs and runs a hand through his gelled black hair.

"You just want me all to yourself don't you?"

I yip and lick at his other hand, he chuckles and bends down towards me, kissing my forehead.

4 years later
Delirious - 14 years old
Evan - 24 years old

I carefully make my way up the steps, every movement hurting my legs and joints, Evan kneels down at the top, urging me on.  I huff and puff, every step becoming more difficult until I miss one, and I go tumbling down.

I feel a ton of pain, everything hurting when I moved, and I knew, my time had come.  But what scared me most, was I think Evan knew too.

Evan's face is in front of mine, rubbing from my neck to the side of my stomach, his lip hanging out.

"It's time isn't it buddy?"

I try to answer, tell him I'm fine and I just need more time, but it only comes out as a saddened whine.  His eyes become brighter and shiny, the sad liquid fogging up his eyes.

Evan stands up and calls someone on his phone, nodding and saying we will be there soon, he grabs a towel and carefully lifts me up, cautious to not hurt me more.  I'm placed down in his car, happy we're going for another ride, but I can't show my gratefulness, pain surging through my arm when I adjust my position.

"Just stay still bud, you'll feel better soon."

I obey him, like I always do, and groan, drifting off into a light slumber until I feel the car stop.  He pulls the keys out and opens his door, closing his and opening mine.  Again, he warily wraps his arms under me, I lie completely helpless in his arms, my tail wagging lightly to show I'm happy in his strong arms.

He opens a door and I recognize this place as the vet, where I always got those painful things stuck into my body.  Usually I'd try and run off, away from this building, but not this time.  A lady looks at me, sorrow filling her eyes as she nods at my owner, opening a door where a table with cushions is prepared.  He puts me down and pulls his arms away, smiling sadly at me while he strokes my grey and coarse fur.

"Whenever you're ready sir, I'll stand outside, just knock when you're done."

Evan nods and looks at the counter, I follow his gaze and see a sharp point with something in it lying there.  He looks back at me, I stare into his eyes, pleading silently to him to let me stand up, I can do it.  His eyes water up as he strokes my fur, my owner tries to smile but he fails miserably, the sad liquid begins to pour down his cheeks, I move my head, licking slowly towards his face.

"I'm going to miss you so much.  You helped me through all of my problems.  Who's a good boy?"

Looking at my owner as he falters over his words, I realize something.  All humans are immortal, my fur became grey over the years, as rough as sandpaper, his stayed its glossy and soft look and feel to it.  His legs didn't ache, he didn't need hot dogs to help him, he's still young, I am the one who ages.  Humans will always be immortal, there is no doubt about it.  I spent my entire life loving this man who took me in as his own, and I regret absolutely none of it.

I close my eyes, even breathing becomes difficult, Evan sniffles and I hear faint knocks, but I can no longer open my eyes.   I feel lips on my forehead, the door opens and closes quietly, a couple whispers heard.  I feel a pinch in my rear, and everything becomes darker, all of my senses begin to shut down, the last thing I hear is a whispered sentence in my ear from the voice I've known the entirety of my life.

"You're the good boy Delirious."

Evan is my owner, my best friend, and my love, he is...

My immortal.
