Chapter Fourteen
"Is everything okay, Maddie?" Lily asked that night at dinner. Maddie had been awfully quite and seemed a little upset. "Yeah, everything's fine." Maddie lied. "No, Maddie. Really, what's up?" She put down her fork and placed her pale hand on Maddie's shoulder. Maddie knew she'd have to say something, or Lily would be bothered by it. "I'm homesick," was the first thing that popped out of her mouth. "Oh," Lily nodded like she understood, "I miss my mum and dad, too. Have you sent them a letter?"
Maddie had to be honest with Lily about something. She really felt like she and Lily were close, but how could they be when Maddie's life was full of secrets? "Well, my parents don't write to me anymore. Not since I, uh," you can do it, "got Gryffindor."
Maddie wanted to tell Lily everything after that, but knew it wasn't a good idea. "Oh, Maddie." Lily embraced her friend, "I'm so sorry." Maddie forced a grin, "Thanks. I'm okay."
Hugo (who'd been listening, but pretended he wasn't) cocked his head to the side, "So, Mad, I've been wondering why you've got a muggle cast. I mean, didn't Madame Pomfrey mend your bone?"
Maddie's heart fell. How?! How did I not come up with a story for this?
She just stared at Hugo. He knew something. But Lily looked completely accusation-free. Maddie tried to keep her own expression as calm as hers, "Uh... Madame Pomfrey didn't actually tell me. I hadn't given it much thought. Lena asked the same question, I should ask her." Hugo nods. "Oh." But it isn't an understanding "oh", or a concerned "oh", but more like a I-know-something "oh".
Maddie looks at him and, for the first time, really evaluates him. He is my friend, isn't he? If he knew about me, he wouldn't blab.
"I'm full," Maddie pushes away her plate and stands. "I'll see you guys later, okay?"
Before she can walk away, Hugo announces he's full, as well. Maddie cringes. "I'll be up after I'm done. Are you sure you two don't want to eat more?" They nod in unison and make their way from the Great Hall.
Maddie purposely quickens her pace, to be ahead of Hugo. "Maddie," he grabs her wrist and stops her, "we need to talk." Maddie nods slowly, "We really need to talk."
---
"Where are we?" Maddie asked. "The Room of Requirement. All you have to do is pace back and forth in the 7th floor corridor, thinking about what you need, and a room appears with what you need inside. My dad told me about it, but my mum would never." Hugo replies, taking a seat on the oversized black couch. Maddie did the same. She felt nervous, like when she was in fourth grade, and let the class pet (Herbert the hermit crab) loose on purpose, and had to face the principal.
Why did I agree to talking?
"Maddie," Hugo sighed, "I want you to know nothing will change our friendship. Nothing about you could ever change it, okay?" Maddie simply nodded, knowing where this was headed. "And, Maddie," Hugo started again, "you can tell me anything, I swear." Maddie began to cry silently. "Is there something you want to tell me?" Hugo's voice wrung in her ears. Do I want to tell him?
Maddie first mumbled it under her breath, "I'm a squib." Hugo furrowed his brow, "Come again?"
Maddie squirmed in her seat. Crying harder now, the words were almost painful. "I'm... I'm..." she shook her head at Hugo, "I'm. A. Squib!" She buried her face in her hands. What did I just do?!
But Hugo didn't look surprised, "I kinda figured." Maddie slowed her tears, "Don't... don't tell Lily, okay?" Hugo grinned, "Your secrets is safe with me." Maddie nodded, "Hugo, really. You can't tell anyone. Or I could be expelled. And don't tell Lena you know." "Okay, I get it, I promise." Hugo stood up. "Good," Maddie wiped her eyes and stood, "thanks, Hugo." "No problem."
