Chapter Ten
"Brackium Emendo," Madame Pomfrey tapped Maddie's arm.
Nothing.
Madame Pomfrey gave her a sideways glance and tried again. "Brackium Emendo!"
Nothing.
Madame Pomfrey said nothing, just stood up and walked away from the hospital bed.
What's going on?
A few moments later, she returned with Maddie's wand in hand. Maddie tensed up.
"Maddie," he voice was decorated with worry, "please, prove me wrong. What spells do you know?"
Maddie honestly answered, "None... yet." Madame Pomfrey shook her head. "Maddie, please don't lie to me. Can Lena do magic?"
Maddie knew this wasn't going anywhere good. "Yes."
"Can... can you?"
Maddie hesitated. Lie to a Hogwarts professor? Was it really a professor? No, it wasn't.
Maddie slowly nodded her head. Madame Pomfrey sat down on the foot of the bed. "Maddie, I think your a squib."
Maddie's heart stopped. She found herself open-jawed, eyes fixed on Madame Pomfrey.
She began to start stammering on insisting her magic, but stopped herself.
"How...?"
Madame Pomfrey sighed, "Your bones wouldn't mend."
Maddie burst into tears. From pain, from Madame Pomfrey knowing, from it all. "Now I'll be e-expelled, and I'm s-such a disappointment to m-my parents." She choked on the words between sobs.
Madame Pomfrey lowered her head, "Maddie," her voice was barely more than a whisper. "We could keep this between us... if you like."
Maddie's sobs slowed to a steady whimper, "Please. Thank you, thank you so much!"
Madame Pomfrey nodded, still staring at her lap. "I'll get some casting material, I think I may have some... somewhere." With that she stood up and walked away from Maddie. Maddie... the squib. Maddie... who's secret she was hiding. Maddie... who thinks this is the first secret Madame Pomfrey his kept for a student.
