Day one observations
Some are smaller than others. I found them under the computer desk. They like to group together. They seem to be trying to climb the walls, should I give them a bigger cage? Some are lighter in color. They like hiding under the paper. They are very active, and wiggle around in a caterpillar-like way to get places. One looks like it's eating a random hair inside. They seem hardy; the larger ones are crawling on the smaller ones and the smaller ones are fine. They are strong enough to shift the placement of the rice pieces. They seem to like hugging the wall. There are some almost black in color, and some that are a gold color. They seem very curious, exploring every little bit of their enclosure. They are trying to climb out, but are not strong enough. They react to a slight breeze by "dancing" back and forth like a disturbed tent worm. Interesting. They settle down quickly. Still very active. One of them is on its back with its head tipped upwards. Is it dying? Is it shedding? It looks as if it's shedding, but I am not too sure. I gently poke it.
It reacts by curling up a little more.
It wiggles, now on its side. It is curling and uncurling. My guess is that it's shedding. Do I need to add anything to help them shed? Should I add a fabric or some dirt or some sandpaper?
Still very active, other than the wiggling one. They still hug the walls. There are none in the middle. They have moved the rice mainly to one corner, as well as the paper, perhaps to make some kind of nest.
I should have counted them beforehand. I counted from a picture I took before decorating, and there are 40 inside a container about one inch tall, three inches wide, and five inches long (a guess but close enough). They climb on each other to try to get out. This may be a display of some sort of intelligence.
Still very active. The wiggling one is on its stomach. I move it to a different container. I look closer. It looks like it's abdomen thorax area has been injured. I think it is dying. It must have fallen on something or been picked up too roughly.
Unfortunately it has stopped responding. It isn't moving. I think it has died.
I'm sorry for the early tragedy.
Wait, it moved. It's moving. It must have frozen when it was touched as a right flight or freeze response. It is alive. I am not sure whether to wait until it is healthy to move it back or to keep it separated from the others.
The others are still very active. I keep a close eye on the injured one.
The injured one barely moves. It doesn't respond to being gently blown on or touched. It is moving, though. It may have a chance. It moves away from its water paper. I will put it back with the others as it seems responsive.
I put on the lid, which has a small, 1 millimeter diameter hole at the middle of the top to allow for breathing, water additions, and rice additions, in case the worms manage to climb on each other enough to reach the top or get wings as adults. I put them in the drawer on my nightstand and leave them be in the dark. I will check on them when Mom and my brothers come home as well as take more notes.
