Part 19 - A Cure?
~Chilled's POV~
"Where are we even going Chilled?" Ze complains from behind me but I just shrug, squinting past the harsh sunlight. "We don't even remember where we had planned to go, or where it was. We've been here for days and we haven't even called Gassy and everybody. I think we should just head back," Ze complains and I immediately turn back to glare at him, shocking him since I do hardly glare so intently at my best friend.
"Come on Ze, quit being such a girly girl. We promised we'd do this," I snap, making him flinch as I pull the "you promised" card on him. It's a nasty but effective card after all, and Ze hates to break promises even when he is the one at fault in the end. I turn back around from him and sigh before letting the leaves from the plants return to their place. Despite my anger at his depression and exhaustion, I have to agree with Ze. We don't have a single clue to where the stupid thing can be and we're running out of the typical supplies necessary to live. I sigh before turning back to Ze and pat my hand on his shoulder. "But fine, we'll go back to the nearby town and get some supplies and try again," I mutter, irritated with my own depression. Ze sighs in relief before following me back to the small town, it's like a jungle town full of plant life everywhere but a harsh sun. I don't know why I agreed to go to this sort of place in the first place in the past.
It was during the high school years, dang teenagers don't know exactly how to feel about their lives and think going to this stupid, dangerous jungle would be the coolest place to go. Ze finds the town ahead of me and hurries into the limits, the town seeming as lively as always, but very creepy. The townspeople all look towards us, being the only outsiders around, and immediately push their wares in our faces in hopes something would be bought. I look back towards the jungle line, in some sort of hope there will be a case of flashbacks but all I see is the damn jungle. Ze goes ahead to buy more supplies while I go my separate way, to the building with foreign words scribbled on the side.
"Uh - hey, can I use your... uh..." I struggle to get my words out in a way they'd understand btu as I bring my hand up to my ear and make what Americans would decipher as a telephone, the man nods and points to the sky with his fingers with three fingers and I quickly dig into the small bag I have with me and hand the man three of the coins I've learned to distinguish. I'm led to what can be called the only functional telephone within miles. I hesitate before picking the telephone up but when I do I quickly punch in the numbers I've come to recognize from pushing them in so many times since I've been here.
"Hey this is Adam's voicemail-" Fuck. I hang up just like I have for the past few days over and over again. He can't be so angry, can he? Even if it is from an unknown phone number he should at least answer to see just who it is. Since I've been missing for days he should at least suspect I have something to do with the unknown phone numbers. Though, that could also be a reason why he's ignoring them.... No, fuck him. He should answer my calls, we're involved. He's just being a butthurt asshole because I left for a couple of days. I point to the man watching me with a worried expression with my index finger held up and toss him three more coins, dialing a different more responsive number this time.
"Chilled? Have you found it yet?" Galm asks from the other side in a choppy voice because of the terrible connection here. It's amazing there even is a connection here at all.
"No we haven't fucking found it. Are you in the town yet?" I ask, still irritated only making the poor old man who owns this telephone place seem worried and scared.
"Well - yeah, I am. Smarty should get here tomorrow but... there is something you should know," Galm mentions before the phone nearly deafens me with a deadly amount of noise. I snatch the phone away from my ear before bringing it back and sighing.
"I should go Galm, I can't hear shit. I'll call again, or maybe I'll be back in town before I get a chance to call again," I explian before returning the phone back to it's place and glance at the owner suddenly, shocking him. I hand him three more coins and pass him, making him very confused but I smile back at him. "For the noise I was making," I explain and although he still seems like he didn't understand shit he smiles and bows to me saying some incomprehensible words, but I'm just guessing it's a thank you. It's a more lovely guess than "fuck you outsider I don't need your stupid money".
"Did Nanners answer?" Ze asks as we meet up at the spot we've pretty much declared our meet up spot. I sigh and shake my head, a bit annoyed with Adam's anger, though it's very understandable he should at least understand. I didn't spend all that time trying to gain his trust for nothing.
"I see, is Galm there at least?"
"Glam couldn't say shit because the telephone is shit," I complain and Ze raises an eyebrow at him and I just roll my eyes before falling down to sit on the shaky fountain stone. "Sorry, I'm in a pissed off mood for no reason. I can't believe we can't find that stupid thing."
"It's a pretty good reason to be pissed off," Ze comments and I just chuckle and glance over towards him and around. "It was a long time ago anyways, we should have done more research before coming. Do you even remember the first time you transformed?" I pause, my memories going through my head very quickly and I just shake my head.
"Not really, I just remember it was on the stupid school trip right next to the stupid monkey statue in the middle of the jungle. If we found the guy who was showing us around we'd probably find it but we can't understand half of what these guys are saying," I complain just as a mother passes by and glances at us, hurrying her child away when she sees my obviously irritated and angry expression. I immediately cover my face with my hand, scrunching my face up before attempting to soften it. I shouldn't scare the innocent people of the town with my foul attitude.
"You haven't changed in a while, will this be your first day without changing?" Ze asks suddenly and I freeze, realizing it has been a while.
"No, there was one day back home."
"What, were you pissed the whole day? Does that help?" Ze asks jokingly but I roll my eyes and glance down at the floor. There is absolutely nothing in common with the two times. The first day, I had been in an absolutely blissful state, happy with Nanners and today I'm just irritated and completely pissed off at Nanners. Well, I guess Nanners is in common with the two but in completely different ways.
"No, I used to be happy. I used to be happy Ze," I exaggerate and Ze just laughs and shakes his head as he glances at the other people around, all staring at us as if we're some sort of exhibit. I guess I've forgotten about just how strange we must seem, especially me while I'm continually switching between attitudes. I sigh and glance away from everybody, feeling tired. To be honest I'd love to take on Ze's advice and just go back home to sleep for a bit but we've come so far, I'm positive I've seen that tree with a heart on its trunk. We even let Galm and Smarty in on everything, making sure to visit them before heading off here, and they agreed to help out although they both seemed pretty occupied laughing their asses off at me because they are assholes. I can't let Ze drag me down, we have to find it.
"Lets stay the night at the hotel then go out tomorrow, but tomorrow's the last chance." I look to Ze, confused but he opens his bag with the money we have left. "We have to have enough for trips back, and we don't have enough for another set of supplies so it's tomorrow or nothing Chilled." I stare at the lack of money before standing.
"Well fine, let me look for that tour guide guy again though," I say with determination before bursting out into a sprint but stop for a bit, turning back to Ze. "I'll meet you at the inn room," I call out before turning back around and rushing in some random direction of the village before suddenly running into a woman who immediately pushes me off, seeming irritated with my existence before pausing when she observes me.
"You... you have a curse on you don't you?" the woman asks wide-eyed as she looks up and down me seeming shocked at my very existence. I pause, looking at the woman for a long time before feeling as if God was finally looking in my direction for once.
"How can you tell?"
"I... I just can. This town is very spiritual if you haven't noticed, several people must have noticed," she comments and I look to everyone else who all wince when I look in their direction. "See? They don't want to be associated with you," the woman continues to explain. I glance up at her and back off a bit. I hadn't even noticed, everyone here isn't afraid of me because I'm in such a pissy mood but they're afraid my bad luck will rub off on them. I should have noticed their fear wasn't the same as what you'd expect.
"Why aren't you?" The woman rolls her eyes and pushes back the random streak of color in her hair, something all of the women here actually have.
"I'm from here but I'm just visiting, I don't have the same fucking fear as these people. I have more balls than them," she comments just as another woman comes running up to us from behind her, a shorter woman who looks nothing like the natives here. Her skin is darker and oddly colored eyes.
"Minx? Who's this?" the shorter one asks and Minx shrugs, looking me up and down before nodding for me to follow her.
"Uh - I'm Chilled," I explain and Minx glances over at me curiously.
"That's a fucking weird name."
"Minx isn't the most normal-"
"My real name is Michelle prick," MInx snaps before laughing and turning away and I immediately feel as if I was just put down. Seems like whatever I say can get her angry at me, guess I don't have the moves on all of the ladies after all, though Minx and the other girl seem to be getting along quite nicely...
"Anyways, I can try to remove whatever type of curse that is. I'll look into it and discuss with my aunt and I'll see you when we find out what type it is. You're staying at the inn, right?" I nod and she nods in return, waving me off. "Well I'll see you when it's done, which will probably be tomorrow morning. See you later," she says before walking off without me and making the other girl rush to keep up with her. Well, I hadn't been expecting to find such a thing. I came here thinking that stupid statue had something to do with it but it really could have been anything, that statue was just a first step to finding out the truth anyways.
--------------------------------------
"Hi Chilled," a high pitched voice calls as Ze and I leave the room and there Minx is waving to us at a seat in the inn. I look at her for a long time, feeling as if that's my savior sitting at the table although I had least expected it. I hesitate seeing this woman so carefree when she realizes this curse has been ruining my life. At the last moment of yesterday I had even turned and spent most of the night in that form, so my record is still only one full day without changing. Maybe I should jsut think abotu Adam constantly to stop it from happening, but I feel like that's too much Adam for me. I can barely handle being with him for a straight hour talking, we usually end up going in some strange direction in the end too.
"You're Minx? I'm Steven, just call me Ze," Ze introduces himself and the woman smiles and takes his hand as Ze and I take seats at the table. The other natives all seem to be staring at us, especially at Minx as if she's the truly insane one here. Minx stares at me, her eyes fixated on me, though it doesn't seem like she's really focusing on me at all but rather at something completely different, my guess being the curse that is somehow "visible" to her.
"So did you find anything?" Minx stays silent for a long time before sighing and leans back in her seat, staring at me plainly with those intimidating eyes.
"I have. That curse was put on you at... at random," she says and a sudden roar of anger spirals up in me but she waves her hands in front of me, telling me to calm down. "Some sort of spirit somewhere must have not enjoyed foreigners intruding in 'their' jungle, so they just chose a random one and it happened to be you." The anger continues to stay in my gut angrily and I imemdiately stand up.
"What the hell? So it was just like participating in a lottery of curses? I don't fucking want this, give me a fucking refund," I complain and Minx just laughs, completely carefree. Although I may just be looking for any excuse to take good news I feel myself lighten up with her laugh and sit back down, hoping her carefree attitude is because she can fix it.
"So, can you fix him or something?" Ze asks what I've been wanting to desperately ask but don't have the balls to do it. Minx glances at Ze and glances at me, going between the two of us for too long for my heart to handle before sighing and leaning on the table with ehr elbow.
"Well, yeah, with the help of my aunt yes. It will take about a couple of hours and it may... have side effects," Minx comments, glancing down when she says this and I just sigh and lean back.
"What? Is this going to be another cliche where I lose my memories or something?" I complain and she just shrugs. "Wait, you don't know what the side effects are...?" I ask when she seemed completely unsure. She glances back up towards me and shrugs again.
"I'll be honest, I have no fucking clue. You can end up dead for all I know."
"What? I dont' want to fucking die."
"It was an exaggeration, I can assure you won't die," Minx calms me down after nearly having a heart attack and dying right here and now. "I just don't know what else can happen to you. You may end up a freak after this, or you may be completely the same. You could even have another curse we accidentally put on you if we're not careful enough. Still want to go through with this?"
"I -...well yeah, just be fuckign careful," I complain and she just shrugs, making me panic even more but she just laughs and puts out her hand.
"Expenses, five US dollars," she demands and I hesitate making her tilt her head curiously. "Or what are you? I assumed you were American from your accent." I sigh and hand her the five dollars, making her smile and nod for me to follow her. What the hell have I gotten myself into now? I swear I'm like a magnet for freaks.
