Who is a friend?

The Oxford English Dictionary says that "A friend"  is a person with whom one is on terms of mutual affection independently of sexual or family love. Do you agree? If not, i'm sure you will. After you finish reading my theory.

What is friendship?

Friendship to me , is like a concept in chemistry. The bonds of friendship between two people are just like the bonds between two atoms. In this case, one atom represents one person and the bond between any two atoms (Atom A and Atom B) , is what I call as friendship. Now,  friendship can be of three types:-

1) the single bond friendship

2) the double bond friendship

3) the triple bond friendship

let me explain each of these in detail.

1) the single bond friendship:-

Here, friendship can be compared to the single bonds (what we call as saturated bonds in chemistry) between the two atoms.

The structure is as follows:-

    Atom  A. - Atom B

This type of friendship is the weakest type and lasts for a short duration. It can be broken easily. Why? Because of...

• trust issues

• Jealousy

• Insecurity

• Selfishness

• and many other things.

This type of friendship is what I call as the "friends with benefits" friendship. In this type, Atom A uses Atom B making her believe that she's her really good friend. And she "needs" her, not "wants" her. This is a dangerous situation and one needs to be careful through this journey of friendship. According to me, people under this type must me considered as "acquaintances" , not "friends" because this is not true friendship. One must make lines and boundaries for those who come under this category.

2) the double bond friendship

Here, friendship can be compared to double bonds (unsaturated bonds as we call it in chemistry)  between Atom A and Atom B. The structure is as follows:-

Atom A = Atom B

The bond is long lasting and much stronger than the single bond and is tougher to break. Why? Because....

• Trust increases

• Jealousy is less

• There is faith

• Truth is prevalent.

This is the type wherein there is some amount of mutual trust between friends.

In this situation, Atom A considers Atom B as one of her good friends. Atom B feels the same for Atom A. In this type, they care for each other. These are fairly good people to hang out with and can be trusted. But these too can be broken by some amount of additional force. Fights can happen , they can hurt you, but it can be healed as quickly as it happens.  I call these friends as "good friends".

3) The triple bond friendship.

Here, friendship can be compared to triple bonds (unsaturated bonds) between Atom A and Atom B.

The structure is as follows:-

Atom A - Atom B

This type of friendship is very strong. It is stronger than single bond and double bond types. Why? Because...

• Trust is high

• Selfishness is minimum

• Jealously is minimum

In this type, Atom A and Atom B share a strong bond. They have mutual trust and share each others sorrows and happiness. They can rely on each other. They truly help each other out in times of an emergency.  Some of them live for each other. These are what I call, "true friends" . These kind of friends should be your best friends. And you should be a friend like this. This kind of friendship lasts for the longest duration and very difficult to break , but IT IS NOT IMPOSSIBLE (fortunately in terms of chemistry but unfortunately in terms of friendship) If in case this is broken, both the hearts break and it is very difficult to heal. It takes a long time or in exceptional cases, they can forgive each other and make their friendship stronger.This type of friendship must be valued and taken care of.
