As countries develop, their populations tend to live individually or in small family unit. In your opinion, what causes this and what are the effects on society?
In a modern society, people have preferred to live in a nuclear family. Independence and individualism are considered as two main reasons for the existence of small-sized families. I think this trend can result in both advantages and disadvantages.
There are two main reasons why people tend to support small family unit. To begin with, women in developed countries have got better and higher education along with well-paid and sustainable jobs. Careerism makes young people stay single, postpone their marriage or giving birth. It is true that bearing and rearing a child take so much time, money and effort that husbands and wives are fully occupied with responsibilities, feeling stressed and strained. Furthermore, Western adolescents are imbued with the idea of individualism. They believe this way of living nurtures their independence, helping them learn how to stand on their feet economically and emotionally .Consequently, they begin to detach themselves from a big family and lead an open life on their own. Therefore, the more developed a country is, the more individual its community will be.
The trend towards nuclear family has both positive and negative effects on society. Obviously, small-scale families can pose less threat to the environment. Fewer people means less food and less land are used, and less waste is produced. As a result, human impact on the planet can be minimized. Also, those who used to be imposed by the decisions of the older generations now can be liberated and live independently. However, some drawbacks are also seen in this individual lifestyle. Due to living on their own, people do not know the power of sharing or giving things to others, and are likely to become self-centered and disconnected. As a consequence, young people might assimilate into other cultures at the expense of their own cultural identity or even being lured to social vice.
In general, populations in developed countries prefer to live individually or in small family on account of the highlights of individualism and independence. In my opinion, this trend has affected society both positively and negatively, but its advantages far outweigh its disadvantages.
