25- Close proximity
Gyaan and Ahana waited in a ready position. The moment they saw the dogs come out safely, Gyaan and Ahana ran inside the building.
"Look out," Ahana said, as her whole focus was going to control the fire.
Gyaan nodded and guided her accordingly.
"Don't burn the lower floors. At least, not now. Let's give them a chance to run away," Gyaan suggested.
"Sure," Ahana said.
Tip-toeing they reached the third floor, where they were being held. Ahana was about to move forward, when Gyaan suddenly pulled her behind the pillar.
Her eyes widened at his sudden act. Before she could speak, he shushed her, placing his fingers on her lips. Ahana stayed still, while Gyaan peeked outside, from the safety of the pillar.
He turned to face her again, and immediately removed his fingers from her lips and took a small step back, realizing their close proximity.
"What?" Ahana mouthed. She was feeling uncomfortable, but she knew that Gyaan wouldn't do something like this without a reason.
"They all came out of the next door," Gyaan informed in a whisper.
"Shit!" Ahana cursed under her breath, "We need to hurry," she said, before lighting up the end of the hallway that was on the opposite side.
The alarms started blaring loudly. One of the staff members ran to take the extinguisher out, while the other one yelled to get the elements out of their room.
"Shit!!"
This time Gyaan and Ahana cursed in unison.
Panicking Ahana let her concentration go. And in that one second, most of the building was burning red, well except for the passage they came up from. Fortunately, the pathway to get out was deeply rooted in Ahana's memories, which made it an exception from the destruction.
The alarms that were blaring now showed a red alert. The one who was trying to put out the fire came back with a burned hand, and yelled at others, "Fuck the building, fuck the doctors, fuck the elements; let's just get out of here."
It didn't even take a second for others to make a decision. Their lives were more important than the experiment that wasn't even theirs.
They all ran out to the only passage that wasn't burning.
Gyaan muttered a 'sorry' to Ahana, before getting closer to the wall to hide. This move of his sandwiched Ahana between the wall and him. Ahana turned her face to the other side, before the unthinkable happened.
Time was ticking slowly for the two as they waited for everyone to get away from the hallway.
"They are gone," Ahana muttered in a plain voice, agitated by the whole ordeal.
Not even bothering to check, Gyaan immediately moved away as the discomfort was unbearable. He coughed out of embarrassment, looking at everywhere else other than the fire girl.
"We will get the time to get embarrassed after we are safely out of here. Let's focus on the work we have come here to do," Ahana said, her voice devoid of any emotion as she moved towards the room they were captured in.
"Wow!" Gyaan muttered in astonishment, before saying, "I need this kind of power."
He followed her inside and saw she had already placed the dying and stale elements in their beds.
"Burn the beds a little from the surroundings to make it look like we really died in fire," Gyaan suggested.
"Okay."
"Let's go," Gyaan said, when they were done with their work.
"Do you think they all got out safely?" Ahana asked, stopping Gyaan in his tracks.
Unlike their original plan of not burning the lower floors, Ahana had burned almost everything in panic. Claiming that she could kill, and actually killing someone was two different things. Even the thought of it was unbearable.
"Hopefully," Gyaan sighed. "Don't feel too guilty. They weren't innocent beings. Don't forget that they were happily hiding in the neighbouring room, after sending the feral dogs to ours," Gyaan said, trying to comfort her as much as he could in this dire situation.
"You are right," Ahana said, coming back to her poker face, before saying, "I think I can become a great villain, what's say?"
"Yup, and I will be the evil mastermind." Gyaan laughed.
Ahana grumbled under her breath, "Damn him, always taking the cool names for himself."
Gyaan chuckled at her, before opening the door of the room. But as soon as he opened the door, he almost had a heart attack.
He leaped back with shock, crashing into Ahana who was standing right behind him, when he saw the blazing hallway. He couldn't see anything other than the raging fire.
He coughed a little, looking anywhere else other than her, as he pathetically tried to get away and stand back properly.
"Oops, I forgot to inform you that I lit the passage on fire, to stop the staff members just in case they had a change of mind and came back," Ahana said, before helping him get stable on his feet. She muffled her laugh to not embarrass him further than he already was.
"Don't worry, we will get out safely" Ahana said in gentle voice, she didn't know she possessed, before clasping his palm and interlocking her fingers with his.
"But how—"
Gyaan yelped as he was pulled into the blazing hallway, even before he could finish his sentence.
The fire parted away to both the sides, creating space in the middle as Ahana ran with Gyaan in tow.
Just as Gyaan wasn't able to see anything other than fire before, no one could see anything other than fire even if they were standing in the view of a hallway that was on fire.
Gyaan and Ahana ran past the staff members, who were almost at the door of the building, having come down with great difficulty by narrowly avoiding the fire. They couldn't notice the parting because of the fire wall and hence were unaware of the presence of the fire girl and the peacemaker.
Ahana didn't leave Gyaan's hand until they were out of the burning building. They couldn't run much farther and had to stop at the footpath that was only a few steps away from the building.
Gyaan sighed heavily as he took support of the nearby tree to stand. He looked for Ahana after he had come out of the shock of what had happened, only to see her heaving badly as she struggled to breathe.
He crouched down to comfort her, as Ahana was also on her knees. He patted her back and waited quietly until she got her breath back.
Ahana tried to stand once she felt a little okay, but ended up on the ground as legs gave out because of exhaustion.
"Shit!" Gyaan exclaimed, before helping her sit near the tree as standing was out of question.
Gyaan bit his lips in worry thinking what to do, before he picked her up in his arms bridal style.
"Sorry, but we need to get out of here soon before anyone sees us," Gyaan apologized, knowing how uncomfortable it must be for her to be in his arms. But he didn't have any choice. The staff members would be out soon and considering the condition of the laboratory the fire-brigade would be definitely on its way.
"Then wake me up when we reach," Ahana said tiredly, resting her head on his shoulder.
Gyaan guffawed, shocked by her weirdness. "You are impossible. I thought you must be feeling awkward because of the situation, but you are—"
"I don't have the energy to feel anything," she muttered drowsily, before falling asleep.
Gyaan shook his head as he smiled at the crazy girl, before taking off running.
