58- Better late than Never

In the Human World:

The moment Sameera had cut the call, Ravi knew he had made the biggest mistake of his life. Asking your love to choose between him and someone they really cared for, was a really shitty move on his part.

"Sameera wouldn't have chosen Neer if he was actually the culprit." The realization clicked to him a second too late.

He immediately called back to the number Sameera had called him from. However, Sameera was long gone from there.

"I will bring you back to me, Sameera. And this time along with all other elements, after proving them all of you innocent," he said with determination.

Not wanting to waste time, he immediately tried to contact Maanvi. While others were close to the elements, he and Maanvi were the only ones in relationship with them. Ravi was sure that even if no one else sided with the elements, Maanvi would surely give it a second thought. But contacting Maanvi was harder than he thought. She had left the job and was at a higher post in a big media company. Although she had left the job, Ravi didn't think it would be this hard to reach her.

Hoping that she would reach out to him later after seeing all those messages and missed calls, Ravi decided to sleep on it, only to be woken up with the news of the death of elements.

He sat there like a statue, unable to think coherently. Nothing made sense to him. It was like his world had fallen down yet again. Even the pain of the accident and being left as a handicapped didn't compare to the pain he was feeling right now.

"I was too late."

These words roamed in his mind continuously. If only he had shown up to help Sameera earlier. If only he wasn't a coward. He could have surely helped the elements somehow.

Amidst all the problems, Sameera had managed to call him, yet he couldn't be there for her. Her last cry for help was ignored by him.

How was he going to forgive himself? He had broken her heart a night before she died. They both loved each other dearly, yet their last conversation was full of pain and betrayal.

After the accident, Ravi was living in darkness. Sameera had been the one who had shown him light. Now how was he going to get by without her. All those promises, all those resolutions, all those wishes, all those hopes for their future together; she left the world without completing any of them.

The pain started becoming unbearable. Without Sameera's light, Ravi started falling into darkness again. And somehow managed to land himself into the once dreaded hospital yet again.

Many known ones came to wish him well, and among them were the researchers. They were essentially the colleagues of his niece, but they all had created a separate bond when they had come to live at Ravi's house during the time of disasters. However, right now their presence was a reminder of what he had lost.

Ravi wasn't really angry with them. Just like him, they had decided to take an easy way out for themselves. They all, including himself, were cowards for putting the elements under the bus for saving themselves.

"I know it is hard to lose a loved one," Reyansh, the team leader said, squeezing Ravi's hand, "but just think whether you should really feel bad for the murderers. We have clear evidence about Neer being a killer. And if all other elements sided with him, then they all were equally involved.

"I think this is a blessing in disguise. The villains are dead, and we are free from the speculation of others."

Ravi scoffed at his words. "They are dead, yet you are focused on saving your own ass."

"Sir is right, Ravi," Sarika, the oldest researcher among them said, "We might have lied about our involvement with elements for saving the world, but it is also true that even we were unaware of their evil intentions. Then why should we face the consequences for what they did?"

Ravi let out a sardonic chuckle hearing her words. "True, why should you care about what happened to the people who worked alongside you for two years? Why should you care about the people whom you deliberately chased and pleaded to help you survive? Why should you care about the people who saved your children's lives? If not for them, all of your children would have been burned or electrified. But why should we care about what happened to those saviours?"

"They killed a man!" Kriti, his niece shouted.

"They all saved thousands of people," Ravi yelled back.

They all got a warning from the nurse to keep it down as it was a hospital, making everyone fall silent for a few seconds.

"We all saw them saving people from our own eyes. But did anyone really see him killing the man with their own eyes?" Ravi questioned. "And please don't speak about the video. If someone had the guts to stand so near and record the whole video, they could have as well gone and saved the man," he said, before anyone could have answered the question.

"The person must have been scared. It is one thing to record secretly, and totally another to go and fight with someone powerful," Payal said.

"You are saying this, but your eyes are telling me a completely different story," Ravi said, looking at her reddened eyes.

"What else do you expect? You are lying on the hospital bed because of the death of your lover. Here, I have lost my own son. Can any mother be okay after that?" Payal asked, wiping her eyes as the tears she had been trying to hide for so long had started falling.

"Mother? I thought you had only one son- Ayaan. Wasn't that what you sold out to everyone? Why are you crying now when you pushed away Avan when he needed you the most?" Ravi retorted.

"That's it. Stop it now," Reyansh said, before another screaming match ensued. "Ravi, you clearly know why she did it and how hard it was for her to do so. Right now, you are hurt. So we won't take anything in our hearts. Because even you all know, that although you are pointing fingers at us, you were equally involved in all this. If we are guilty, then you aren't a saint either."

"Get well soon," Reyansh patted his shoulders, before they all left leaving Ravi to contemplate upon what was right and what was wrong.

"We think what you are thinking right now is correct and other elders are wrong this time," a voice came, making Ravi look at the room's door.

There they were, standing at the entrance of his hospital room, the children of researchers.

"No flowers? No fruits?" Ravi asked, his voice turning normal as he didn't want to scare away the kids.

"We aren't here to wish you well. We are here to discuss and protect the dignity of the elements," Sarah, Sarika's daughter said as she plopped down on the nearby chair.

Ravi sat up straight upon hearing her words. There was someone else who believed in elements too.

Before he could ask them anything, they all hid under his bed.

"What the—"

"Sshhh," Sarah shushed him from under the bed, before whispering, "Children aren't allowed to visit."

It was then he noticed that a nurse was standing outside. He too stayed quiet until she left. As soon as the nurse was gone, Tejas ran to close the room's door, before finally sighing in relief.

"You daredevils," Ravi muttered with a smile, before finally coming onto the main topic.

"Since when did you start trusting the elements?" Ravi asked.

"Since the first day," came Ayaan's immediate answer, "my brother cannot be a bad person. I refuse to believe it."

"And it was plain obvious that the video is false," Tejas said, making Ravi's eyebrows raise.

"How? Everyone was so sure that it was true," Ravi asked, flabbergasted, as he too had a hard time trusting what to believe. But these kids were so sure.

"Because it's Neer in the video," Sarah answered instead. "We could have still believed the murder if it was Ahana in the video as everyone knows her temper. But Neer, it is impossible. That guy is too kind."

"Unfortunately, we couldn't really do anything as our parents kept a close eye on us after that school fiasco. And didn't really let us communicate with anyone. We just managed to escape somehow today," Rewa, the team leader's daughter informed him.

"Yeah, just because of you. So Thank you!" Sarah added, tipping her head.

"We are late, but let's do something for them. Even if they are dead, we should at least clear their name. They deserve to be remembered as heroes who helped save the world and not as the villains," Rewa requested.

Ravi looked at the determined kids and his own willpower increased. He had to do something. This would be his atonement to Sameera.

"Do you have a plan?" Ravi asked, hoping for a start.

"We have, but we will need the media power and money," Rewa answered.

"A lot of money." Sarah spread her hands to show the immense amount they needed.

"Media power is sorted," Ravi said, pointing towards himself, "but finance...," he trailed off.

"Don't you have any savings?" Tejas asked with hope.

"I have some, but I don't think it would be enough," Ravi answered regretfully.

The kids slumped down. They had the plan and determination, but how were they going to bring the money was still a question.

They were about to lose hope, but then Ravi received a call from an unknown number.

A call from one of the leading business tycoons. A direct call from a businesswoman who was told to be the most secretive and private person. A call from Hritika.
