chapter 16: tattletale
Eloise wasn't allowed a job at Alexandria. She was too young but when she was talking to Eugene and he had to leave really quickly, she was the only person around to stay at the gate. It had been a few minutes and so far, Eloise didn't have to do anything, she just casually paced back and forth, humming a tune as she skid her feet against the cement, no doubt ruining the bottom of her shoes when she heard a scream from the other side of the gate.
"Open the gate! Open the gate!"
Eloise ran to the gate, opening the first gate so she could see who was screaming.
Rick was running down the street, trying to great to Alexandria as quick as he could while hundreds of walkers trailed behind him.
"Lou! Open the gate!" Rick screamed as he pushed a walker away from him, making him topple over onto the ground. Without a second thought, Eloise started opening the gate, Michonne running up to help her and once Rick was in, he fell to the ground out of breath as the herd of walkers that followed him, pushed against the gate, wanting nothing more than to get in.
...
After Rick was freshened up, he walked out of his house and back towards the gates of Alexandria where now the whole town stood, listening to the walkers growl.
"You can hear it. Some of you saw it. They got back here, half of them. Still enough to surround us 20 deep. Look, i know you're scared. You haven't seen anything like this. You haven't been through anything like this. But we're safe for now." Rick said and Eloise could hear Carol sigh from beside her, rubbing her eyes.
"The panel the truck hit seems intact. We reinforced it just in case. Either way, the wall's gonna hold together. Can you? The others, they're gonna be back."
"They're gonna be back." Rosita reassured, making Eloise smile a bit.
"Daryl, Abraham, Sasha, they have vehicles. They're gonna lead 'em away, just like the others. And Glenn and Nicholas are gonna walk back through the front gate after. They know what they're doing, and we know what we need to do. We keep noise to a minimum. Pull our blinds at night. Even better, keep the lights out. We'll try to make this place as quiet as a graveyard, see if they move on."
"This place is a graveyard." A woman shot at Rick as one of the walkers banged on the walls, a loud clang shot through the air, startling Eloise. She jumped a bit, quickly composing herself but she was already spotted. Both Carl and Jace saw her, chuckling from across the group as Jace imitated her jump. Eloise flipped Jace off but Carol quickly grabbed her wrist, pulling it down.
"The quarry broke open and those walkers were heading this way. All of them. The plan that Rick put into place stopped that from happening. He got half of them away. I was out there recruiting with Daryl. I wanted to try to get into a cannery and scavenge, and Daryl wanted to keep looking for people. We did what I wanted... And we wound up in a trap set by those people. And I lost my pack. They must've followed our tracks. Those people who attacked us... They found their way back here because of me." Aaron spoke up, looking disappointed in himself at his own words.
Everyone was quiet at Aaron's words when Eloise notices Deanna abruptly walk away bit she's not the only one that notices. "Deanna? Deanna." Tobin called but the woman ignored him.
...
Ever since Enid left the three her note, no one has seen her. Eloise believed she went over the wall but Carl and Jace were a little more skeptical one it, not believing Enid would hop the gate while a herd was coming straight for Alexandria.
"Well, it's not like she knew the herd was coming here. The plan was for the adults to move it away from us so if she did leave, which she probably did, she would be clueless to the fact of the herd that's here now." Eloise explained to the boys as they walked. Eloise was staring at the ground while she rambled, Jace looking ahead incase he could spot Enid in a hidden corner while Carl kept his eyes on Eloise, looking for any tells of stress.
"Louie, you know Enid. She's tough out there. It's not like she'd see the herd and just stand there and let them get to her. She could hear them from far away, she'd be able to get away without them noticing her." Carl said, grabbing her hand to help calm her down.
"Yeah, Ellie, Enid's got this." Jace said and he could feel her glare on him, making him turn his head. "What? Not the time to annoy you with the nickname? Fine. I'll shut up. You two keep being all coupley and shit, just pretend I don't exist." Jace mumbled when Eloise noticed someone sitting on the grass. It was Ron, stabbing the grass with his knife. "Maybe Ron knows?" Eloise mumbled before walking towards the boy, leaving Carl and Jace on the sidewalk.
"Ron? You okay?" Eloise asked, taking slow steps to the boy who was still stabbing the dirt. "Why wouldn't I be?" Ron asked, stabbing the ground harder, making Eloise jump back a bit, an awkward laugh escaping her lips. "I don't know you seem pretty mad at the dirt right now."
When Ron didn't laugh with her, her laugh turned into a sigh as she turned away to Jace and Carl who were both watching the conversation. Eloise cleared her throat, turning back around to Ron. "Hey, uh... Have you seen Enid?"
"Not since I saw her with you guys." Ron said, finally looking up and gesturing to the boys behind her. Eloise nodded her head as she stared at her shoes. "Yeah... yeah. We- we think she went over the wall just before the herd came and now she's trapped out there."
"What makes you think she isn't dead?"
Eloise slightly cringes at the words, shaking her head. "Come on... Look. Jace, Carl and I... we'll go find her. If you mayb-" "I'm not helping you, Eloise."
"This isn't for me Ron. This is for Enid. Your girlfriend." Eloise said emphasizing on the 'your'. "Exactly! My girlfriend. Or, I mean... 'cause she was right? Before your little friend came along." Ron growled, poking his finger into Lou's shoulder, making her stumble back a bit.
Eloise scoffed, getting right in his face. "What? So you just want to leave her out there?"
"I told her to stop going over the wall. I told her there's bad people out there and that it's stupid and dangerous. And you have no room to talk, Lou! You went with her half the time!" Ron screamed in the girls face, making Jace and Carl walk over.
"Because I know what I'm doing!"
By now, Jace and Carl were standing about a foot behind Eloise, not trusting how angry Ron was getting.
"Well, I'm not gonna let you go. None of you." Ron threatens. Eloise scoffed turning away and walking towards the wall her and Enid left the pegs, luckily, the wall hadn't been compromised by walkers. "Lou. Carl! Jace! Guys!" Ron called out, running after the three.
"You're not going out there." Ron said, reaching to grab Eloise but she turned around, pushing his chest. "Back off!"
Ron pushed Lou's back when she turned back ahead, making her stumble a bit. Carl quickly turned around and pushed Ron until he hit the ground. "Back off of her." Carl seethed, grabbing Lou's hand and turning to walk with her and Jace when Ron speaks again.
"I'll tell your dad, Carl. Lou, I'll tell Carol. Rick and her will go out there to find you, then other people will too. And then somebodies gonna die."
Eloise turned around at his words. "Huh?" Ron was now up and walking towards the three. "You saved my life and now I'm saving yours." Ron said, hitting Jace's shoulder as he passed. Once he was gone, Eloise groaned, walking to her house. "That asshole!"
She got to her room, slamming the door and sat on the bed, her hands on her face. She could hear the door creak open and a few seconds later, the bed shifted, showing someone sat beside her but she didn't move her hands.
"Louie, this is Enid we're talking about. She's tough." Carl muttered, wrapping an arm around Eloise, pulling her into his chest as she finally dropped her hands from her face.
"I know. I know. But the herd is huge, Carl! We can hear them from here!" Eloise breathed out and it was true, you could hear the moans of the walkers even through Lou's closed window. "I just.... I just keep thinking, what if she came across them but wasn't quick enough?"
Carl just sighed, pulling her into her more as Eloise contain her stress.
She just wanted to find her friend.
—Uh.... We're getting closer to the you know what scene if you know what i mean....
