chapter 18: guts
Eloise didn't know how but she wound up helping Gabriel who tripped and fell but when she saw that he started getting surrounded by walkers, she grabbed his arm and pulled him along after her. She was running towards the houses, Gabriel right on her tail when she heard a voice scream. "Lou! Gabriel! Come on!"
The voice was Rick who was holding up a bleeding Deanna; Carl, Michonne and Ron with him. Eloise ran towards them, checking behind her every once and a while to make sure Gabriel was still there.
Eloise looked back again when they were almost to the group when she felt herself ram into something. Eloise looked forward and saw that a walker was right in front of her. Eloise pushed its shoulders away from her as it chomped the air, getting closer and closer to her face. She could feel it going closer and closer to her until a loud noise rang through the air and the walker went limp.
Eloise looked around and saw Jessie holding a gun, killing the walker that had tried to bite her. "Come on! I have Judith!" The woman screamed. Eloise shook her head, exiting her thoughts and continued running to the woman's house. Gabriel was the last one in, the door slamming shut after him.
Eloise was helping Gabriel barricade the front door while Rick and Michonne got Deanna comfortable when she suddenly heard screaming and glass breaking from the garage.
Eloise turned to Gabriel who nodded his head, saying he's got it and with the confirmation, she ran towards the garage door. She tried to open the door but it was locked. She started pounding on the door when Rick and Jessie showed up.
"Carl!"
"Ron!"
"Carl! Open the door!"
The three voices screamed over each other until Rick pushed Jessie and Eloise back. He grabbed his axe and started hitting the lock on the door. Eloise covered her ears and shut her eye at the sound of the metal axe scraping against the metal lock.
Rick finally got the door open. Eloise watched as Ron jumped up off the ground, grabbing his gun as Carl stayed barricading the back door where walkers were already coming through. "Carl! Let go! Come on!" Eloise screamed and Carl finally let go, running to the group.
Jessie, Eloise, Carl and Ron all tried to keep the door closed as walkers started pushing against it. "Hey, watch out!" Jessie said. Eloise turned her head to see what the woman was talking about and when she saw Rick and Gabriel coming over holding the couch, she quickly moved out of the way.
"We need more, and we need to be more quiet." Rick groaned from beside Eloise as they leaned against the couch, putting weight on it to keep the door closed. Rick turned to Carl who was on the other side of Eloise. "Hey, hey, what happened in there?"
"We were looking for tools and knocked over a shelf." Carl breathed out and Eloise instantly knew he was lying. "What about the yelling?" Eloise asked, her brows raised. Carl sighed, slightly shaking his head, so slightly that only Eloise noticed which confirmed her theory. "Ron saw them break through the gates. We had to move. That's what happened."
Ron leaned towards Carl and Eloise. "Carl, there's nightstands in my mom's room."
"Hey.. It sounded like there was fighting." Jessie breathed out and Ron nodded his head. "Yeah we were fighting them!" Ron ran up the stairs, Carl right after him. Eloise watched them go up, biting her lip in worry. "Go." Eloise turned to Rick and he nodded his head towards the stairs. "Go after them." Eloise looked back and forth between the two adults before running up the stairs.
Eloise got to the room just as Carl was closing the door, taking his gun out of his holster in the process. Eloise caught the door before it closed as Carl's gun clicked. "Hand me the gun, grip first."
Ron turned around and his face dropped at the gun pointing at him. "Carl, I'm sorry."
"Yeah. I know. Now give me the gun." Carl snapped. Ron looked down at the weapon in his hand before passing it to Carl, grip first, just like he asked.
Carl nodded and handed Eloise the gun since she didn't have hers on her at the moment, only her knives. "Look man... I get it. My dad killed your dad, but you need to know something. Your dad was an asshole."
Ron glared at Carl and if looks could kill, they'd both be dead from the glares they sent to each other. Eloise, wanting to be the peacemaker, went to open her mouth but before anything could come out, glass shattering was heard outside.
The three ran out of the room where Michonne, Jessie and Gabriel were looking out the window. "They knocked the sculpture over." Jessie breathed out. "All that noise... it's drawing more." Michonne said, making Eloise curse under her breath, putting a hand to her forehead to calm herself down. She felt her chest closing up slightly and to make matters worse, Judith started wailing.
Eloise shut her eyes tight and tried to control her breathing when she felt Carl grab her hand, rubbing his fingers against her knuckles to calm her down. Once her breathing steadied, she opened her eyes and gave him a grateful smile.
"Did you see Jace? Out there?" Carl asked and Eloise immediately nodded. "Yeah... He was with um... he was with Tara, Rosita and Eugene." Carl nodded and suddenly the walker snarls grew louder and the group realized they were piling up against the front door.
Everyone pushed on the mattress that was leaning against the door but the walkers were stronger than just six people, half of them being teens. "There's just too many of them." Gabriel screamed, his voice barely being heard over the snarls.
"Everybody get upstairs now!" Michonne screamed and Eloise realized the walkers got through the back door. Carl grabbed Lou's hand, pulling her up the stairs after him. They watched from the top of the stairs as Rick and Michonne leaned the couch up on the entrance of the staircase so the walkers couldn't get through.
"I got this one. You get the one behind it. We're gonna need at least two." Rick said before slashing his axe into one of the walkers head and Eloise groaned, knowing exactly what they were going to do.
Rick slipped the walker through the gaps in between the wall and the couch before placing it on the stairs and doing the same to the other. Michonne walked up to the first walker, dragging it's legs. Eloise noticed MIchonne's obvious struggling and grabbed the walkers arms, helping her the rest of the way up the stairs and to the guest room.
Not long after, Rick came in with the other walker, the rest of the group following behind him. "We're gonna need bed sheets, enough for everyone." Rick said to no one in particular but Gabriel was the one to leave the room and look. "Bed sheets for what?" Jessie asked in confusion.
"We all go to the armory." Was all Rick replied with as if Jessie knew exactly what he was talking about. "How?" She asked again. "We're gonna gut these things. Cover ourselves with the insides. It'll mask our smell, make them think we're like them." Rick explained and Eloise sighed at the sight of Ron and Jessie's skeptical faces. "It works. I've done it before."
Rick looked up at Eloise in confusion and Eloise shook her head. "Terminus." Was all she said, making the man nod and turn back to Ron and Jessie. "We just have to stay calm, we don't draw attention, we can move right through them."
Gabriel came back and Eloise instantly snatched the sheets out of his hands, cutting head holes for everyone like ponchos. "They're in the house. They're making noise. More are coming." Michonne said before her and Rick stabbed the walkers.
With every hole Eloise made into the sheets, she threw one at someone until there was one left just for her and an extra. She pulled the bed sheet over her head and kneeled down in front of the gutted walkers. She and Michonne were the first to cover themselves, checking each other's backs to make sure their sheets were entirely covered.
"Mom?"
Eloise turned at Sam's voice. He was in the room the whole time, Eloise forgot he was even there. Jessie shot up and grabbed her youngest sons shoulders, pulling him away from the scene to talk to him. After about a minute, the pair came back and Eloise slowly gave Jessie the extra bed sheet poncho, realizing it was his and she helped him get ready.
...
After everyone was done, they headed back towards the stairs as Rick turned to get Judith but Gabriel stopped him. "Rick. I'm not giving up out there. I will not turn back, no matter what happens." Rick nodded his head. "Yeah, I know."
When he came back with Judith, he looked back and forth between Carl and Eloise when Eloise stepped forward. "I'll take her." Rick looked at her for a few seconds before looking down at Judith who was already watching the teen girl, stretching her arms out in hopes to reach her. Rick let out a breathy laugh before walking towards the girl. Jessie helped Eloise lift up her bed sheet as she grabbed Judith and cradled her in her arms.
After Eloise had a secure grip on the baby, they started walking down the stairs slowly and just like it had the first time Eloise did it, all the walkers walked passed her as if she wasn't there.
When they reached the outside, everyone started grabbing hands, Eloise holding Jessie's hand while the other carried Judith, making Carl just hold onto her elbow.
Rick looked at everyone in the group, making sure they were ready to go and once everyone nodded, they started walking down the porch steps of the house and traveled with the the walkers.
And under all the walker snarls, Eloise could've sworn she heard Sam calling out to his mom.
