chapter 20: a letter to remember
"It's not that hard to catch the ball" Carl taunted as he bounced the tennis ball to Eloise who dropped the ball again. "I couldn't even catch a ball with one hand before I broke my hand. You think I could do it now?" Elise threw the ball back to Carl, letting the ball bounce against the ground before he could catch it.
"Carl!" Michonne screamed from the hallway. Carl dropped the ball in his lap, groaning. "What?" "Denise says it's PT. For both of us." Eloise called out.
"I can't hear you two. Come on out." Rick screamed and Carl groaned, grabbing Lou's good arm and helping her off the floor, he wrapped his arm around her shoulder and walked out of his room. "What? Denise says this is PT." Carl said at the same time as Rick, making Eloise hold back a laugh.
"You heard me." Carl groaned.
"It's time to change your bandage. And I need to borrow some toothpaste." Michonne said. "Okay, but I'm out of toothpaste and my wrapping stuff is at Lou's." Carl said, throwing the ball to Rick. "I have toothpaste. I'll have Jace drop some off." Eloise told Michonne who instantly gave her a grateful smile.
Eloise grabbed Carl's hand and walked out of the house and to hers.
After the wall fell, a lot of people didn't make it leaving houses open for the group considering there was about nine people a house. Carol, Daryl and Eloise got to keep the house they had always been in, Jace moving in as well.
The pair walked into the house where Carol was cooking lunch for Jace and Daryl was packing up for a run with Rick. "Hey Jace, can you drop off some toothpaste for Michonne?" Eloise asked as she dragged Carl towards the bathroom to change his wrap.
"Aren't you the one heading to the bathroom?" Jace asked, his mouth full of scrambled eggs and Eloise quickly opened the medicine cabinet, grabbing the tube of toothpaste before throwing it at him. Jace jumped at the object hitting him but caught it as it bounced off his face. He grumbled a few not so kind words as he tried to fit the rest of his breakfast into his mouth before walking out to Carl's house to give Michonne the toothpaste.
Eloise closed the bathroom door once Carl was in and searched for the wrapping materials. Once she found them, Carl was already sitting on his stool so Eloise could see his whole face.
The couple had a deal. Since Carl didn't like showing his eye without the bandage, Eloise would have to wrap his eye using only one of hers, closing the other. Carl waited until Eloise had one eye closed before taking off his bandage.
Eloise quickly bandage him up and once she was done, she opened her other eyes as Carl looked at her, smirking. "That was the longest wink I've ever seen." Eloise rolled her eyes, trying to hold back a smile until Carl brought his lips to hers. She slowly let the smile brighten on her face before pulling away from loss of breath. "How about we go outside the wall today?"
Carl smiled leaning closer to her face. "That. That is why I like you."
...
The two were walking hand in hand through the woods, Eloise sometimes letting go to twirl and dance around but her hand always ended up back in his. As she was spinning around, her eyes caught something shiny on the ground.
"Look." Eloise mumbled, pointing at a deflated balloon lying on the ground. She quickly walked over to it, her boots sloshing in the mud. When she lifted the balloon, she saw a letter attached to the string. She quickly untied it as Carl walked up from behind her.
"What's it say?" He asked as she opened the folded paper, both of their moods dropping at the paper with water stains. Eloise sighed. "It washed out. All gone." Eloise looked it over a little harder and could start making out some words. She brought the paper closer to her face as if it was closer to her eyes, she could see better. And then she could read the first two words.
Dear Louie,
Eloise froze. Of course there letter didn't have to be for her but she felt a connection to the handwriting like she's seen it before.
"Come on!"
Eloise looked up at the sound of Carl's voice, he was already a few feet ahead of her. She quickly folded the paper back up, stuffing it in her pocket and following after him.
They walked around until they found the fallen tree branch they would normally sit at and read comics. Eloise sat down first and once Carl sat beside her, she rested her head on his shoulder and flipped open her She-Hulk comic.
The two had been silently resting until a snap of a twig made the pair shoot their heads up. A few feet away from them behind all the trees was Spencer and Michonne. "It's just Michonne and Spencer." Eloise mumbled to Carl who kept his eyes on the magazine.
After a few more minutes of reading, it had grown darker, to the point where Eloise couldn't read her comic without a flashlight. "We should start heading back. It's getting dark." Eloise said, turning to Carl who nodded his head and closed his comic. Carl got up first, escaping his hand out to help Eloise up.
As they walked back, they could hear a walker moaning. "You know we can't leave it here, right? Michonne's still out here." Carl whispered to Eloise and they slowly started walking in the direction of the walker. Carl whistled to get its attention and when the walker turned around, the two kids froze. "Oh my God." Eloise breathed out.
A walker Deanna stumbled towards the pair as they started walking backwards. "You said Spencer was with Michonne, right?" Carl quietly asked Eloise and she nodded her head. "We need to find Spencer." Eloise whispered back and they slowly led the walker Deanna towards where they last saw Michonne and Spencer.
Luckily, Spencer had been talking to Michonne loudly so as soon as Deanna heard him, she left Carl and Eloise alone and stumbled towards the other two people in the woods. Carl and Eloise stayed behind the rows of trees to make sure that nothing went wrong. Eloise felt eyes bore into her skull as she watched Spencer and Deanna, turning her eyes over just a little, she saw Michonne staring at her and Carl with death glares. Eloise quickly grabbed Carl's arm and tugged him away from the scene. "Go! Go! Go!"
...
When Eloise and Carl got back to Alexandria, they slowly creeped to their houses hand in hand. When they got to Carl's house first, Michonne was waiting for him on the porch, her arms crossed. Eloise was surprised that Michonne had gotten there before them, she gave Carl's hand a reassuring squeeze as she let go, walking back to her house, glad she didn't need to be disciplined until she heard Michonne's voice from behind her. "I already talked to Carol. You two are going to talk when you get inside!"
Eloise cursed under her breath and continued to her house. When she got home, she quietly ran to her porch steps to take a seat, pulling the letter from the balloon out of her pocket and slowly opened it. She looked around to see if anyone was near her and when she saw no one around, she looked it over, trying to find more words. She could see some words on the paper but they were smudged, covered in dried up water droplets and dirt. Then, she could make out just about ten words.
Dear Louie,
We'll see each other again someday.
Love, Jasper
Eloise stared at the letter in shock, feeling her heart fall out of her chest. "Holy shit..."
