chapter 42: flibberschticky

"I don't know what the hell it is." Rosita grumbled, she and Michonne walking up to Eloise who had been talking with Maggie and Enid.

She quickly handed Maggie a note as the womans brows furrowed. "If you fill the crates with food or phonograph records, I will gladly exchange them for a key to your future"?

"It lists coordinates for our meeting spot." Rosita said, making Lou's brows furrow. "This isn't the Saviors. They'd blow through the gates, make a big show. This isn't that."

"I wouldn't put nothin' past them." Maggie muttered and Enid shrugged. "Well, if it is a trap, it's kind of obvious."

"Which is what could make it a trap." Maggie added as Eloise sighed. "What if... What if it's someone who actually wants to help?"

Maggie slowly looked up to the girl, her eyes slightly squinted. "If someone is trying to help us and we miss out, we miss out. If somebody's trying to kill us, we die."

"Not if we're careful." Rosita said, stepping up beside Eloise. "Being careful is staying here." Enid said. Maggie looked at the two before looking down at the map, shaking her head. Michonne sighed, taking a step forward. "I'll go. I'll see what's up."

"If you're going, I'm going." Rosita shrugged out, turning to Eloise, already knowing what she was going to say. "You go, I go." Eloise said, bumping shoulders with Rosita.

"Rick wants us here." Enid said, making Michonne shrug. "I know. But the last time we took a chance like this, it changed everything. Rick didn't agree with me then. He may not understand me now."

"He won't." Maggie said, making Michonne smile. "But eventually, he will. He will."

"Jesus and the others have been scavenging, and we're still starving. Maybe this person does have something that can help." Maggie said. Enid nodded slowly. "Then, I'm coming with you."

Maggie turned to her, nodding. "Okay. I'll grab records, case this is real. You get extra clips in case it isn't."

...

"Are you sure you don't want me to come?" Carl asked childishly, wrapping his arms around Lou's waist as the rest of the girls loaded the van.

Eloise chuckled, shaking her head as she looked at Carl. "I never said I didn't want you to go." Carl pursed his lips playfully as he shook his head. "You don't want me to go."

Lou's jaw dropped, making Carl chuckle as he quickly kissed her cheeks then her lips before flipping her ponytail playfully. "Be careful." Carl mumbled, rubbing her cheek. Eloise smiled, going on her tippy toes to kiss him. "You got it, cowboy."

...

"Oh... wow." Eloise mumbled, peaking her head out from the backseats beside Enid and Rosita as they looked at the black van parked in the middle of the street, two woman standing in front of it.

Maggie slowly got out of the car, making the rest follow after her, guns raised.

The unknown woman walked towards their van, opening the doors, revealing an old woman in a pale white suit and a soft smile.

The woman opened her arms out, chuckling slightly. "My name is Georgie, and these are my friends, Hilda and Midge. And you are?"

After getting no reply, Georgie chuckled, shaking her head. "Suspicious. But curious enough to see what I have to offer for food and music. I do hope the records are music. I don't accept spoken word. If you're out here, you know you can take care of yourselves, and I like that. I don't care to share this with the weak."

"Good." Maggie quickly replied. "Enid. Lou." Maggie said and the two girl slowly walked towards the woman beside Georgie, guns raised as the patted them down for weapons.

Eloise went to pat down Georgie but the woman quickly raised her hands in surrender. "None for me." Eloise sighed, checking anyway and after finding no weapons, she turned to Maggie, nodding her head.

"Give us what you have." Maggie said, her gone pointed right at Georgie who shook her head. "I'm afraid I can't do that. I come bearing knowledge to trade... Essential knowledge for the future, primarily in my head, and, uh, I prefer to keep that where it is."

"You're trading knowledge?" Michonne asked and Georgie quickly nodded. "That's what I have. I've made the same offer before... Fill the crates, get the knowledge... Simple as that. It's not a trick, just a fair trade. I promise you. It's an act of benevolence."

Eloise walked back over to Maggie and Michonne with Enid, her brows furrowed. "Why would you do that?"

Georgie turned to her, shrugging. "What else should I do?" "How many communities have you found?" Rosita asked.

"Communities like yours? Not many at all. And not one for a very long time. What you have is special, unusual. The dead have brought out our best and worst, and the worst has been outpacing the best lately, but that won't last forever. It won't. If, perhaps, people can believe in people again, four crates of goods is worth far less than a sustainable future and perhaps an exercise in trust." Georgie said and Maggie instantly tilted her head.

Georgie smiled, catching onto what Maggie was thinking. "I know... 'trust' probably sounds like a made-up word now, like flibberschticky. Or klompf."

Enid groaned slightly, shaking her head. "Stop. This isn't real. No way anyone survives going around doing what you say you're doing."

Georgie turned to Enid, nodding her head. "But we do. And we will, because I can divine that you are a fine group, manners notwithstanding."

Michonne slowly walked up to Maggie, getting right beside her ear. "We can make a deal." Maggie glared slightly at Georgie and her women, shaking her head. "No. These people and their van are coming with us back to Hilltop."

...

"We should make the deal and let them go before the Saviors get here." Michonne said as she, Eloise and Carl entered the Hilltop office and Maggie instantly shook her head. "I can't let her go, not with what they have. I got too many mouths to feed. They've quite of food in that van. People here could be starving soon."

"Maggie's right." Enid said, walking into the room, making the four turn to her. "We take their stuff. Otherwise, someone else will. Someone else will kill them. It's a miracle they're still alive, anyways."

Eloise slowly shook her head at Enid's words, making Enid walk right up to Eloise. "The Saviors are on their way. We're gonna fight, and some of us will die, so why should we give a shit about people who don't give a shit about themselves? I mean, out there, living like that? We take their stuff, and we use it. We stop pretending that things just work out. They don't."

Eloise looked at Enid with sad eyes, shaking her head. "We rescued Siddiq. Jace rescued Siddiq, and now we have a doctor."

"And we have a friend." Carl added, walking up beside Eloise, making the Atkinson girl nod in agreement as she slowly took the gun out of Enid's hand.

"Jace was brave." Elosie said as Enid slightly glared at her and Carl, her eyes tearing up slightly. "And now he's dead."

Eloise felt a lump in her throat as she took a step back, Carl quickly wrapping an arm around her waist as he glared at Enid.

"Step back." Carl whispered, his voice scaringly low. Enid looked at him with wide eyes before shaking her head and walking out of the room. Carl slowly grabbed Lou's hand, squeezing it to comfort her.

"Things don't just work out." Maggie mumbled. Eloise quickly cleared her throat, turning to her. "They don't. But I think he knew that. His parents weren't around much before all of this so he stayed at our place a lot. My mom taught him about being a good man. He wanted to be a good man. He didn't give up on who he wanted him to be. And we can't on who he wanted us to be. We can't." Eloise whispered before walking out of the room, Carl following after her.

Eloise walked towards the tower, Carl right beside her as she climbed up the ladder. She took a seat on the small stool Kal had left up there as Carl sat on the ground beside her.

"You okay?" Carl asked, looking up to Eloise who was looking down at Hilltop. Eloise sighed, turning to Carl. "I'm okay."

Carl sighed, standing up and walking behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist and resting his chin on her head. "You can say you miss him. We all do. I miss him." Carl mumbled, making Eloise sigh, leaning back into Carl as he tightened his grip around her. "I miss him."

Eloise could feel Carl nod his head. "Enid shouldn't have said that to you." Carl mumbled bad Eloise quickly shook her head. "She's grieving." "We all are." Carl mumbled back.

The sound of the some coming up to watch tower ladder made the two turn their heads, looking  down as Enid came up. "I killed Natania." Enid mumbled as Eloise quickly stuck her arm out to help Enid up. When she got up, Enid sighed, wiping the dirt off her pants. "She was out there trying to kill anyone she came across, and we came across her. So I killed her, and I'm alive, and Jace saved someone, and he's dead. How the hell are we supposed to do this?"

Enid sighed at her own words, turning to Eloise and Carl. "Are we supposed to just stop fighting?"

Eloise swallowed the lump in her throat, looking off at Hilltop. "I don't think Jace wanted us to stop fighting for our future. But I think he was telling us that, to get to our future, it's gonna take more than just fighting."

"The Saviors are coming right now, Lou." Enid said, making Carl turn to her. "And we're gonna fight them. But there's gotta be something after."

Eloise felt Carl grabbed her hand, squeezing it tightly, making her sigh. "There's gotta be."

—I don't really remember if we ever fully established lou's and carl's ship name BUT I LIVE FOR IT
