Part 16 - Why Wen Rouhan Became Evil
When we arrived at Zhan's home, we went to his office. I handed the envelope back to him and he wouldn't accept it. "You really should look at the contents," he said.
"No, I'll do that when I've fulfilled my part of the deal. One hand washes the other. I help you and you help me." I said.
"Why do you want to do this all of a sudden? And do you even realize what could be coming your way? You can still get out and just take the information with you and go. I wouldn't even be mad at you for that."
"I hesitated, I admit that. If you look at it closely, you and I are enemies, aren't we? And there, as an agent, I can't just say yes right away just because the sex was so great. As an agent, I need the OK from my supervisor. Because that way I'm on the safe side. Everything I do during that time is covered by the agency. And yes, I also let myself be talked into it a little bit. Because sometimes it's not wrong to listen to other opinions."
"Mhhh, yes we are enemies. And what do the other opinions say?"
"Well, my colleague said it looks to him like you are using me as a tool to get rid of your brothers and then taking your father's position yourself."
"You could have just said that he told you not to trust me."
"That's the same thing. I just explained it to you, which is what he thinks."
"And you, I assume, thought that as well?"
"For a brief moment I also considered that."
"Woah are you always so honest Yibo?"
"I could lie to you too. But I guess you'd notice wouldn't you? I have the feeling you'd see right through me if I tried."
"Maybe. Well, we should now clarify when and why my father became a criminal. So you know it started about 30 years ago. Anything else?"
"No, nothing. I looked everywhere, but didn't find anything."
"Did you look at his family tree? And then checked what happened to them?"
"Um, no."
"You should have. You'd probably know everything by now. But it doesn't matter. It all started with Wen Rihan, my father's little brother. He was eight years younger than my father. The two had been inseparable and after Wen Rihan finished school, they started a gardening and landscaping company together. At first, they had few jobs and when, it was for mowing lawns here and there. They didn't earn much. But then my father drove from one property to another offering their services. That's how they got jobs for kindergartens, schools, universities or companies. So my father took care of orders and the office, and my uncle handled the orders."
"Okay, and then?"
"One job was really good for them. They signed a 4 year contract with a high school and by that time they were making enough money to hire two more men. They needed them, too, because the high school grounds were very large and one man alone couldn't have done it. They would usually come once a month, mow the lawn and trim the bushes. In the winter they were supposed to do the winter maintenance, clearing snow, gritting. Well, and twice a year they were supposed to prune the trees, too. And on a Monday in March, 30 years ago, they started doing that. They had three days to trim all the trees on the property."
"Sounds like a lot of work."
"Yes, especially when they were constantly being disturbed. They worked separately the faster they could finish. My uncle was 24 years old at the time, had been married for three years and had a 2-year-old son. He loved his wife and son more than anything. And because that was just the way it was, he wanted to be home on time every evening. That worked on Monday, not on Tuesday, but then again on Wednesday. When his wife asked him why he didn't get home until around midnight on Tuesday, he refused to answer her and withdrew."
"So something happened."
"Uh-huh. On Wednesday night, my uncle was already in bed, the doorbell rang and it knocked. His wife opened the door and 5 armed police officers rushed into their apartment, dragged my uncle out of bed, pushed him to the floor and read him his rights. Then they dragged him out of the apartment and left him sitting in the police station in the interrogation room for over 5 hours without giving him anything to drink or letting him call his lawyer. He didn't know what was going on."
"That's standard operating procedure to make the defendant more nervous and anxious."
"I know. Well, after those 5 hours, two officers then came to him in the interrogation room and played good cop, bad cop with him. They enlightened him that two high school girls had made charges against him for allegedly dragging them into his van after school on Tuesday while they were on their way home, tying them up, and later raping them multiple times in an abandoned parking lot. Wen Rihan was 1.71 meters tall and weighed only 64 kilograms. The two 16-year-old girls were, one 1.67 meters short and she weighed 47 kilograms, the other 1.68 meters short and weighed 79 kilograms."
"Wait a minute, one weighed more than him and he was still able to overpower her and at the same time the other girl?"
"Good question, isn't it? Only no one asked that one. Well anyway, to get a confession from him, they even beat him. He repeated several times, yes he took them in his van because they asked him to. He also confessed that they were in the lonely parking lot and sex occurred, but he clearly said he didn't force them."
"Mhhh..."
"Since both girls had demonstrable injuries on and around their genital area that indicated rape, the case was clear to the police. He raped them. The public prosecutor's office saw it the same way. In order to get the confession from my father's brother, they punched and kicked him repeatedly until he simply gave in and signed the confession required by the police officers. Only 2 months later the court hearing took place where the girls once again described the process and my uncle didn't dare say anything after being forced to confess and didn't dare take it back."
"So he went to jail and your father went crazy?"
"Not exactly. Yes he went to jail. But since there was a lack of space in the prisons, he was transferred to a bad prison that was primarily for foreigners. He was there for six months and during that time no one from his family was allowed to visit him. Any requests for visitors were denied. Most of the time they said he was in solitary confinement for allegedly starting fights."
"Mhhh... okay so what?"
"When he had already been in custody there for a total of 5 months, an elderly couple came to the police station and handed them a video. They said their grandson had borrowed their video camera many times and must have forgotten to take the video out. The officers promised to look at it. But even after another 4 weeks, when the elderly couple heard nothing from the police officers, they turned to the media with a copy of the video, which they had made as a precaution. And still in the same evening there was a special broadcast on television. There the video was shown. A few young people were filming each other until they noticed a van. They went there and filmed what had happened there. What could be seen was two girls beating and raping a man who was tied up."
"Oh fuck... then they did this to him and not he to them?"
"Mhm. Since this was a scandal, because the video just "disappeared" from the police, and the police, prosecution and the judge at the time got into trouble, a retrial was approved. And then what happened was this. For the first time in six and a half months, my father and his parents, would see Wen Rihan again in the courtroom. The once cheerful and handsome man would surely be happy to see his family there, that's what they thought at that time. But then Wen Rihan was wheeled into the courtroom in a wheelchair. His jaw was wired shut because it had been broken. And when the judge asked what exactly happened to him, one of the correctional officers who brought him to court explained that Wen Rihan was a victim of multiple/regular gang rape. The officer said the last time was the worst. To prevent him from biting, they broke his jaw. They raped him so hard that his hip broke and he needed an outlet for his bowels. When asked why no one did anything and helped him, the officer told the judge to see for himself what this prison was like, then he would understand. Wen Rihan, unable to speak and crippled, cried incessantly. His father was so upset by this that he had a heart attack and died while still in the courtroom."
"Damn it. Give me a minute." I said. I had to pause for a moment. I've heard a lot of bad things before, but this is really intense. When I was ready to listen further, Zhan kept talking.
"In a fast-track trial, the girls were questioned again about the circumstances of the crime at the time. The girls admitted that they had made it all up. They had a crush on Wen Rihan and because he rejected them, they were angry and wanted to take revenge on him. They tricked him into giving them a ride in his van. They told him they had to get to that parking lot urgently because they would get in trouble if they didn't show up there. When they arrived at the parking lot, they overpowered him and tied him up. They raped him for several hours before they took off laughing and left him behind. They inflicted these wounds on each other to make it look real so they could report him. Wen Rihan was declared innocent and was a free man again. But what good did that do him? He was broken, unable to walk and would be a nursing case for the rest of his life. The girls were punished for their lies, with 100 community service hours. That's all."
"They weren't punished for raping him?"
"No. They even complained that they had to do community service. Wen Rihan was back home, but he was dead inside. Just a week after he was back home, he crawled out of bed at night, rode his wheelchair to the kitchen, got a knife, and stuck a note on the door to the pantry saying, don't open the door yourself, call the police and don't look, I'm sorry, I love you and our boy. When his wife found the note on the door in the morning, she opened the door and found her husband with his wrists slit. He was dead. And everyone thought the horror had now come to an end, but that was not the case. Because during the funeral at the cemetery the two girls showed up and made stress. They harassed the grieving widow so much that she took her son and ran to her car. Relatives, including my father, tried to stop the girls. But they were faster and ran after Wen Rihan's wife and son. They threw stones at her car. She panicked, started the engine, was about to drive away when an ambulance crashed into the side of her car. She and her son were killed instantly. The girls were only sentenced to two years probation because of it. And that was when my father said that this law, which punishes the good and protects the bad, is no longer acceptable to him and he made his own laws from then on."
After hearing all this, I was just speechless. I could even understand Wen Rouhan. Who wouldn't when something like this happens? Lastly, Zhan told me, "When the two girls turned 18 and still didn't improve and targeted another man, my father stepped in. He arranged for the girls to be kidnapped and sold them to a prostitution ring. With this knowledge, you can do whatever you want. Report my father, arrest him, or whatever. But he will still stand proud with his head held high for this."
I have no intention of reporting Wen Rouhan for this. Or do anything with that knowledge. I'm keeping it to myself. Because honestly? Even if I am a special agent and work for the law, but these beasts of girls, deserved it!
