The Mall Ghost

"Hyung!" My partner, Kim Min Joon, calls from our front desk in our office at Sulivill, West Seoul. "I think I found something interesting." He adds excitedly, handing me his tablet, "Look at this," He points at the headline, "Mall ghost strikes again!"

Over the years, we have kept a low profile, making barely enough to survive. Posing as pet-detective, was just our day job. Our real interests, however, lay elsewhere.

"Mn." I nodded and go through the article. "To be honest, I thought this was a publicity stunt. But now that there has been a murder, I don't mind looking into it." I reply.

"So, you are saying that we can look into it, right?" He asks, and I grunt, "Mn."

I make myself comfortable on my recliner, and straighten the nameplate on my desk that reads: Park Soo Young {P. Private Eye}. Meanwhile, Joon brings over his notebook and starts reading, "First sighting, Lotte mall, Sulivill. The ghost vandalized the lipstick and perfume section."

"Lipstick and perfume." I quirk my brow; Joon nods and continues, "The second sighting, same place but this time women's clothing section."

"Was something taken?"

"A designer wedding Hanbok*." Joon replies and adds, "Crazy, right?"

"Mn." I nod, and Joon continues.

"The last sighting was outside men's restroom, minutes before the head security guard was found dead. Cause: Unknown." Joon finishes.

"Why did the police connect these cases?"

"Well, I did some digging and found out that the stolen items were found next to the body." He elaborates.
I nod, satisfied, "That's good enough for me. Let's go."

*Lotte Mall, Sulivill*

The officer-in-charge, who was one of our previous clients, allowed us to take a look at the crime scene which had been left undisturbed.

"You have five minutes. Don't touch anything." The officer had warned before leaving us alone with the victim.

Joon crouches down next to the items, and sniffs. "It's not a ghost." He states.

"A mutant?" I enquire, and he nods, "Yep."

"Can you lock on to its scent?"

"Not exactly. It's all over the place, Hyung." Joon replies dejectedly.

"Where is the scent the strongest?" I ask, but before Joon can reply, I feel something breath next to my ear.
I catch my partner's eyes, and a look of understanding passes between us. In one swift move, I turn around and trap the invisible figure between my arms.

Thought the figure is invisible, I can still see its faint outline.

"You are a WOMAN!" I exclaim, and the entity trapped between my arms stops struggling.

"You can see me!" She exclaims, and I nod.

Just then, the officer's voice over the intercom interrupts us. "Is everything okay? What are you guys doing?"

I let go of the invisible woman's waist and grab hold of her wrist. She tries to free herself once again, but fails. I look around and spot the camera on the right-hand top corner; I wave and direct a thumbs up at it.

"Alright. If you are done looking, then I suggest you leave." The officer sounds apologetic. He probably doesn't want to get caught sneaking us in.

I nod at the camera, and Joon stands up. He bows towards the camera, and follows me outside.

With the invisible woman in tow, we arrive at our office. For reasons unknown to us, she cooperates and doesn't utter a single word till we are alone at the office.

Once Joon closes the door, the woman speaks, "I am not planning to run away."

"We are just being careful," Joon replies, latching the door.

I let go of the woman's wrist and command, "Spill."

I watch as the outline moves and makes herself comfortable on the couch. "You have no idea how good it feels to be acknowledged." She whispers and starts sobbing, making both Joon and me uncomfortable.

Joon sniffs the air and extends his arm towards the woman tentatively, who holds his hand and places it on her cheek.

"There, there. Don't cry. We just want to know what happened." He consoles, and the woman calms down.

"You are warm." She observes and continues, "Sung Ho, was my fiancee. A couple of days ago, we happen to go hiking. I remember slipping over a loose rock... I don't remember what happened next, but when I came to, I was like this. No one could see or hear me. I found my way back home and found Oppa* in a miserable state. He had reported me missing. So I decided to make my presence felt. I left him notes describing my situation, but he thought someone was pranking him. So to prove to him... " The woman trails off, hiding her face between her palms.

"You took the lipstick, perfume, and Hanbok to make him believe," Joon adds.

The form nods, "Yes, I dressed myself, wore the perfume and applied lipstick, but when I went in front of him, he... "

"He got shocked and his heart gave up because he couldn't see your face." I finish, and the figure starts wailing.

I approach the figure and gently pat its head, "It's alright. It was not your fault."

When the distraught woman doesn't stop, I am reminded of how I had felt the first time I realized that I had changed. But even then, Joon was with me, and we had figured everything out together.

The woman's tears move me, and I do something I have never done before; I offer my help without being asked, "For now, you can stay here...till we decide how to deal with your situation."

"Hyung!" Joon looks at me, completely bewildered, "Did you actually... " He starts, but I cut him off, "I reckon, she was affected by the meteor, like we were. Joon, is it  possible that the recent earthquake unearthed it?"

Joon nods, "Hyung, I think it's time we pay the real culprit a visit."
