You entered the meeting room you had reserved to see the majority of your staff there. Some were in casual clothes since you called this meeting on their day off. A lot of them were glaring at you, until they saw Dolores trailing behind you. Then their expressions ranged from surprised to vindictive. With HR's reputation for making boss' jobs harder, you kind of expected some of the smirks cast your way.
You made it to the head of the table, Dolores standing off to the side, ready to jump in if necessary, and you turned to your team. They all looked at you expectantly, and some of them had an impatient look in their eyes. Probably eager to go back home.
"Thank you all for coming to this meeting, especially on such short notice. Something has come to my attention, and I wish to fix it. As long as all of you are okay with it, of course. It IS something that concerns all of you." You started, and a few looked a little nervous at the ominous way you ended your introduction.
"I took a closer look at the human structure of Parts and Service, and I noticed some concerning things. The most prevalent being how most of you were hired for the opposite positions you applied for." Those that weren't too interested before, now looked quite invested. It was clear that none of them were expecting you to bring this up.
"I've been in contact with Dolores from HR," you gestured to said woman who waved at the group, "and we've agreed that the best approach is to hear what all of you have to say about it. Once I have a good idea of what you all want, then we can form a plan that will make everyone happy. Sound fair?" You looked around the room and were met with a sea of stunned faces. After a minute, Kevin raised his hand.
"Yes, Kevin? You wish to share something?" You opened the floor to him.
"Why are you doing this? I thought you only cared about the animatronics." He asked, making you widen your eyes in surprise. You looked around, and noticed others nodding their heads in agreement.
"Wait... did all of you think I was only trying to improve things for the animatronics?" You asked, and the nodding increased.
"Yeah, I mean, your whole first meeting with us was about how to treat them with respect and all..." Maisy said, giving you a mild look of accusation.
"Only because that was the biggest problem I noticed, but I guess I can see where you're all coming from." You took a deep breath, and thought about your next words carefully. You never intended to make your human workers feel like you cared less about them. You just wanted your animatronic friends to be treated with the respect they deserved.
"Look, I know my first impression on you guys wasn't exactly... all that great. But I promise you, I'm not here to make your jobs more miserable. When I look at the animatronics, I see people just like you and me. And my sense of justice wanted to do something about it. That's why I focused on that first and foremost. We are their only source of staying functional, so we should at least make sure they get some form of decency. I know some of you don't agree with me, but I hope you can at least see why I did what I did in the way I did it." You saw that while there was disagreement on some of their faces, they were at least considering your words.
"I'm sorry that I made you guys feel like I didn't care about the human aspect of Parts and Service. I had no idea just how bad things were until I took a closer look. I'm not going to be a perfect boss. I will make mistakes here and there, as is human nature. But I do want to try and make an effort to get as close to perfect as I can. I want to be there for all of you, and in turn, all I ask is that you work with me just a little." You said, extending a metaphorical olive branch. All of them looked at you with thoughtful expressions. Surprisingly, it was Kevin who finally spoke up.
"I guess we haven't exactly been fair to you either. We all saw this newbie come in with the big boss' favor, making Ms. Odwell pissy, therefore making our jobs more miserable than they already were. Then we come back from our forced break to find the newbie has taken the manager's position over everyone else. Add in the fact that you had this sense of arrogance about you well... I guess we judged you far too harshly. So, truce? If you're willing to try, then I guess we can do the same thing." Kevin said, showing a surprising amount of maturity. You honestly didn't expect that from him. You saw others not meeting your gaze, looking a little guilty at his words. You smiled, and nodded in agreement.
"Truce. Also, apologies for appearing arrogant. I just have a lot of self confidence that bolsters my inner gremlin at times. I'll try to keep it in check in the future. Anyways, back to the subject of this meeting, what are your thoughts, and what do you wish to change, if anything?" You opened the floor again, and a series of hands went up this time. You gestured to one of them.
"I want to work on the mechanical side of things, like I applied for. I never understood why I was hired as a technician when all of my training was to be a mechanic." she said. You pulled out a pen and a small notepad. You jotted down her name and request.
"Got it. Anything else?" you said, looking back at her. You gestured to someone else when she shook her head "no."
"Same here. I wanted to be a technician, and I'm stuck being a mechanic." he said.
"Okay, how many of you just want to work the position you applied for?" You asked, deciding to nip that one in the bud. Almost every hand shot up, and you quickly wrote down all of their names.
"Alright, I'll be sure to change that in the system later. Everyone who raised their hand will from this point onward be working in the department they applied for. Is everyone okay with that?" You asked, and most of them nodded eagerly. One hand shot up in question, and you gestured for him to speak.
"What about Lazy Gary? Don't you have to get his approval for the technical side of things?" he asked, making a few employees grimace in disgust. After the displeasure of meeting Gary, you couldn't blame them.
"Gary will no longer be a concern for anyone here. He was fired just before this meeting." You announced, and everyone started muttering to one another in surprise.
"Mr. Selik fired him at last?! Thank GOD!" shouted one of your female employees.
"Mr. Selik didn't fire him. I did." You said, and that caused all chattering to cease.
"You can do that?" one of them asked in surprise.
"Certain conditions have to be met in order for a manager to fire another manager on the same level as them, but it can be done. And Mr. Stuart DID meet all of those conditions, so Ms. (L/N) had every right to terminate his employment." Dolores spoke up for the first time in that meeting. It was silent for a few moments as everyone took in that bit of information.
"So, who's going to run the Technician Department?" Someone finally spoke up.
"Until we find a suitable Head Technician, I will assume the responsibility of both departments." You said, and if it were possible, they somehow looked more surprised.
"UNTIL you find a SUITABLE Head Technician? You mean you're actually going to look for someone competent to fill that position? You aren't trying to keep all of us in your iron grip like Ms. Odwell?" Kevin asked, probably looking the most surprised out of all of them.
"Yes. Parts and Service was meant to be a duality, and that can't be accomplished unless there's two competent department heads." You explained.
"But you're trained in both areas. If anyone can run both departments, it's you." Someone else said, and you felt flattered that they were willing to compliment you so quickly after your agreed upon truce.
"What if something happens to me though? What if I get sick or hurt? What if I get pregnant and need to take maternity leave someday? I need someone in a leadership position to help keep things in line until I get back." You explained.
"But won't the Head Technician only understand the technical side? What if Mechanics has an issue the technician can't help with?" another one asked.
"That's why I was thinking of suggesting one of you once, I really get a good feel of who would do best in a leadership position. All of you have some training in both areas, albeit forced since you had to work in the opposite department for so long. But that at least proves that you understand the problems of both sides, and can step in to help should it be needed." You said, and the muttering started back up. It was more excited this time, since it was pretty much guaranteed that one of them would get the promotion. You let them go at it for a few minutes before you brought their attention back to you.
"Now are there any more concerns you want to address?" Another hand flew up, and you gave them the floor to speak.
"Ms. Odwell had a closed door policy. Anytime we needed help, we had to rely on each other, and not her. Are you going to do the same thing, or can we ask you for help when we need it?" The question made you pinch the bridge of your nose in frustration.
"The more I learn about the way Doris ran things, the more I hate her. You can come to me for any problems you may have. I don't care how big or small it is. My job is to help you help the animatronics, and I promise to fulfill that to the best of my abilities." You said, giving them your most serious expression to show that you meant what you said. A sea of gratitude was your reward.
"Anything else?" You asked, and no one raised their hands this time.
"Alright. Meeting adjourned." You said, and everyone got up, and started milling about. You turned to Dolores who looked at you with nothing short of pure pride.
"You handled that so well! You barely needed me at all! I said it before, and I'll say it again. You are going to be a fantastic boss!" she said, and you felt a bubble of warmth settle in your chest.
"Thank you. I guess I should go inform Mr. Selik of all the changes we've made this morning." You said, reaching for the stack of papers in Dolores' arms. She pulled them away before you could touch them.
"I can do that. You have a lot on your plate already. Go take care of your department." She said, giving you one last smile of approval before walking off.
You glanced over at the remaining employees in the room, and noticed that they all looked much happier than you've ever seen them. The animatronic abuse was obvious, but the human abuse was too well hidden for you to try and stop it early enough. You were glad you were able to put a stop to both. And now, it looked like your underlings were willing to give you a fair chance. You squared your shoulders as you inwardly promised to not let them down.
"Alright. Time to update the system." You said, looking at your notepad. There were a lot of names to go through, and you wanted to be done before lunchtime. Chica wanted to see if she could handle being around you while you ate, so you had lunch plans with them. With that in mind, you hurried to your office.
