Chapter 4
A/N: Late night chapter, why not ehe. So yea THE WENDIGO HUNT IS ON! This is mainly a Neverland-centric chapter, I'll get back to what the boys are up to in the next chap or so hehe~ A few OCs are thrown in here and there, but hey, trust me when I say that fillers are just as important as normal chapters. Either way, ENJOY!
"First of all, the rest of you are going to need some protection while I go out to find this thing." You took a large stick and begun to circle around the encampment, drawing small symbols at specific points in the circle. The boys were staring at you, confused. "This is an anasazi symbol. I suggest not stepping out of it," you warned.
"Or what?" One of the Lost Boys challenged.
"You're going to be a very delicious meal for our hungry not-so-little friend." You didn’t mind helping them, but you did mind getting sassed. You were the sasser, not the sassee.
"What do you need us to do?"
"Honestly? I'm not sure. I don't like putting civilians into harms way if I can avoid it." You crossed your arms over your chests. Sure these boys knew how to play games, and maybe they were decent hunters. Whatever the situation you guaranteed that this thing was a better hunter.
Pan stepped forwards. "You aren't going to take this thing on alone after I've lost some of my boys to it."
"You and your boys would get in my way." You weren't about to budge on this issue. Though by the way you saw all the Lost Boys stand straighter in an attempt to be taller, you had a feeling that they weren't about to back down either. Great just what I need, stubborn Lost Boys who think that they can play around with the supernatural.
"Pan, do you think that Dreamshade will be able to affect this thing?" Someone in the crowd asked. Pan looked contemplative, furrowing his brows a bit.
"Last time that Johnny tried that, the arrow injured it, but it's still around so no. Dreamshade can slow it down definitely though, but not kill it," Pan said casually.
"And... We might have a chance of finding any of its more recent kidnappings. Wendigos like to keep their prey around as long as they can, they're kinda hoarders. We need to find its home and work from there, how big is this island?" You asked.
"Neverland may look small, but it's anything but."
"Great. So now we've got to hunt a supernatural hunter while it's hunting us too. Oh god if Smokey the Bear wouldn't haunt me then I would love nothing more than to burn this entire place down," You grumbled half to yourself as you tried to get a grasp on what kind of situation you got yourself dragged into this time. I'm in Neverland. I'm back in my adolescent years. I'm surrounded by cocky boys that probably don't know what manners are. And their leader is the most frustratingly smug person I have ever met. Not to mention there's a Wendigo here and even after losing some of their friends they are barely fazed by this. Why does this shit happen to me?
"This thing stepped into my land. Me and my Lost Boys will be the ones that take care of it." Pan shot you a cold glance, emphasizing how serious he was about this. You raised your hands in a look of surrender. Pan was a good fighter, he'd proved that, but you just hoped that the rest of them could hold their own as well. They had their Dreamshade (whatever the hell that was), but you still had no idea how to create the fire to kill this thing. You didn't have a flare gun laying handy anywhere…
"Alright boys! Line up!" Pan let out a shrill whistle. Two lines were formed by the boys, the younger boys in the front with the taller and older looking boys in the back of the pack. You rose your eyebrows in surprise, Pan really had a good grip on these boys alright. He paced back and forth in front of the lines like a military officer. "This thing has stepped onto our land! It has taken our friends! Think we're gonna stand for that?!"
"NO!" You had to give it to Pan; he really knew how to rally his Lost Boys. Pan disappeared for a second. You stared warily, before you saw that Pan had reappeared higher on a tree branch.
"I shall be selecting a few of you boys to take part of this hunt!" There were excited whoops from the crowd. Pan crossed his arms and stood tall and firm a serious look on his face. "We will find this creature, and we are going to kill it for ever stepping foot in Neverland!" The boys let out loud hollers and hoots, sounding more like wild animals than anything. Pan's face broke out in a smirk, with one wave of his hand they all fell back into silence.
"Felix, Tay, and Benjamin." You three shall be joining the hunt for now." There were some groans from the crowd, of those who weren't selected to join in this 'big mission'. You gave the three who stepped forwards a quick evaluation. Felix, you assumed, was the tall blond male with short blond hair, his bangs cast shadows against his already dark grey eyes. Tay, was one of the few Lost Girls that you had noticed among the crowd of lost boys. Her hair was a choppy style, a light brown color and it looked like she put as much care into her appearance as the rest of the Lost Boys put into theirs. Her skin tone was a pale color, but she still had splashes of freckles on her cheeks. She stared back at you with unhesitant hazel eyes. Benjamin however, he was the one that had you stiffening a bit. Even in your younger body, you noted that he might not have been the same height as your chin. Unlike the other two who stared back at you, he could barely meet your eyes long enough for you to figure out that he had light blue eyes. A mop of yellow curls atop his chubby head, you really questioned why Pan chose him. Felix carried a large stick with him and had a natural air of being hard to take down. Tay even had a confidence to her that you recognized all too well. Benjamin however? Benjamin looked like a little angel- not exactly someone cut out for hunting down something like a Wendigo. There was something familiar about him that you couldn't put your finger on.
"Uh, nu-uh. I am not taking any kid who looks like he's about to pee himself into these woods." You shook your head.
"Benjamin's new." Pan hopped down from the tree effortlessly, wrapping his arm around Benjamin's shoulder. "I'm going to be besides him personally on this trip, to help and break him in to Neverland a little bit." Pan patted Benjamin's shoulder. Benjamin visibly tensed. You realized that the boy was the same as the one you'd seen on missing posters in town. You tried to resist the urge to announce this- you were sure that Pan remembered kidnapping the boy from his home and you would bet that he would do it again.
“This kid huh…?” I picked up the poster, the boy couldn’t have been more than ten years old, his face was still full of innocence. “The parents are worried sick.”
“Parents and worrying. Thank god we never got that with dad,” Dean said.
“Please. With dad we got knife throwing lessons and knowledge on anything and everything supernatural,” Sam spat. Saying that he had some pent up daddy issues would be a joke. He had a shit ton of those, him and Dean both. I wasn’t going to tell them that though, I’ve tried time and time again but they’re both stubborn as asses. That wasn’t the kind of thing that you could work out either. I just had to be there for them when they needed me.
“Hey, hey, no fighting.” I hooked my arms around both their necks, ginning like a fool. “Can’t have you two kicking each other’s butts. We need to save energy to kick supernatural butt.”
"Right. I'm not going to question you and this island's madness. What I want to know is, where the hell are my weapons?" You asked, remembering that when you originally came here you should have woken up with your throwing knives and guns.
"Catch." Pan pulled the weapons seemingly out of thin air, tossing both the sheathed knives and the gun towards you. You gave a nod of appreciation, putting the knives onto a belt that slung on your waist; just in reach should you need them. You gun was tucked into the front of your pants, also right in reach if you needed it.
Tay grabbed a bow, Felix went with a club, and Benjamin was equipped with a dagger. You didn’t see Pan carrying any weapons, but you figured that he could conjure any whenever he needed to.
“We have to burn it to kill it. So Pan, any ideas on how to burn this bitch?" The three of you set out into the jungle.
"Oh don't worry. You find it, I'll torch it," Pan dismissed you. You noted that Felix would walk off from the group slightly, seemingly covering your right side and your back flank. Tay did the same with the left, though she wasn't out as far as Felix. She was still in arm's reach. Benjamin was right between yourself and Pan.
"That statement makes me worry more."
"You're not getting it, are you?" Pan stopped moving suddenly, making his little Lost Boys? Girls? Lost Kids?
"What?" You asked, sticking your hands on your hips.
'Guys, do you hear that?' Tay asked, but when she glanced back at you and Pan, she realized that no one was paying attention to her. They never did, Just because she was a Lost Girl. But the two of you were too absorbed in your arguing to take notice of her either.
"This is a game. And I always win." Pan announced. Your urge to punch him in the face suddenly tripled. And considering you already really wanted to punch that smirk of his off his face- that was saying a lot.
"A game ? You think that the lives of all your Lost Boys are a game ?" You jabbed your finger in his chest again, glaring right at him with a frown knitted on your face.
"Hunting this thing is just another game," He reiterated, that frustrating smirk of his never leaving his face for a second.
'Pan? (Name)? Felix? Benjamin?' The only one who paid her any attention was Benjamin, though he seemed to be captivated once again, by your argument with Pan.
"I have never met such an asshole before, and I've dealt with a demon once or twice. You sir, take the asshole cake." You snarled, baring your teeth at him. At least you still felt like your older self.
"Watch that tone little girl. Remember who can make sure that you never get back to those precious friends of yours."
You felt your eye twitch as you glared at him. "Is that a threat?"
"Oh it's a promise ." The two of you were practically nose to nose. Green eyes burned into (E/C) eyes, both refusing to back down.
'When they're done going at each other's throat, tell them that I'm tracking these footprints and send them my way.' The frustrated Lost Girl stormed off.
"Disney really forgot to mention a lot of your douchebag tendencies, they really should fix that."
"Name calling is for children isn't it?" Pan mused.
"Coming from you? That's rich."
"Hey, you're supposed to be the adult here, not me."
"CH! GAH! Whatever! We're supposed to be focusing on finding this thing already!" You stormed ahead, feeling more frustrated than when you started. You were so caught up in your emotions, that you hadn't even noticed the missing party member or the tracks on the ground. "And if you aren't taking this seriously, then I’ll fucking hunt this thing alone!" You stormed away into the forest,
The youngest boy glanced up at Pan. The teen stared at the spot where you left, but the beginnings of a smirk played on the corner of his lips. Benjamin spoke in a quiet voice, afraid to piss off the older boy, "Pan, are you sure it'll be ok to let Tay and (Name) leave like that?" Benjamin looked up at the boy with his big blue eyes. Pan looked down at one of his newest Lost Boys with a soft smile. Pan pat Benjamin’s back reassuringly.
"They're both big girls Benjamin, I trust them,” Pan said simply, holding a branch back for Benjamin to cross safely.
"You fight a lot with (Name) though." Benjamin pointed out, feeling bolder now that he was alone with Pan. Well maybe not completely alone, though he had the feeling that Felix wasn't really interested about listening to him talk.
"That's because (Name) doesn't understand how Neverland works.” He spoke slowly, in such a relaxed and earnest tone that was so impossible to doubt- just the way that he wanted it.
"How does it work?” Wide eyed Benjamin found himself taking an unconscious step closer to Pan.
"Like, that if you take everything too seriously, you become too afraid."
"Afraid?"
"Yea. You can only be really brave, take on these kinds of monsters and things, if you look at everything as a game. Sometimes in games, people die or get hurt, but as long as you're still alive and you're still standing, then it doesn't matter does it?"
"Hmm… I guess…”
“Stick with me Benjamin, I’ll teach you everything you need to know. In fact I already have a plan, it goes like this…” Pan leaned closer to the boy’s ear to whisper.
You shoved some of the branches away, cursing the tropical foliage Neverland had to offer.
Ok, ok I just need to focus. I can’t work if my thoughts are all a mess like this now can I? You let out a deep sigh while trying to get yourself to relax. After all you wouldn’t get anything done if you let your emotions get the best of you. It must be the whole round two of puberty thing doing this to me; I was probably this bad the first time around too. At least your mind hadn’t regressed. You took a second to listen to the sounds of the forest around you. The soft crunch of leaves beneath your soft leather boots brought comfort to you. The woodsy scent filled you with old memories, of your true youth, of years ago when you weren’t yet fit to bear the title of hunter. You used to get lost all the time, wherever you went. Hell you couldn’t say that you still didn’t get lost, but as long as you knew your mission and where you had to go, it was ok if you took a little side adventure on the way. Those side adventures were always the times where you could collect your thoughts, some of the times where you found yourself thinking the clearest. Alright. So where would I hide if I was a wendigo?
Tay rubbed her arms as she went thicker and thicker into the forest. The brown haired girl frowned. She’d been in these woods for how long now? She knew how easy it could be to get lost… and just never find her way back to the hideout.
She was beginning to get the feeling that Benjamin had completely forgotten about telling the rest of the group that she was going to be following some tracks that she had found. She sighed. I wish that Devin could be here... She tried to shake the thought off, but it was like a pesky fly. Once it started buzzing around her head, she couldn’t just ignore it. There was something about that brown haired boy with the dark brown eyes. Something in his reckless idiocies that made her smile everytime. It all began on the day he idiotically declared himself the soldier that would throw himself on the line for her. And from there… well… Tay shook her head, ending the thoughts before they could get any further.
A splash of red dotted the forest floor, where broken branches and a torn up path lay. She swallowed back her fears, reminding herself of the younger brother she had already lost to this creature. She would get him back, she would, and if she couldn’t, then she’d get revenge. She realized that the blood was wet, still fresh. She knew that by instinct her stomach should be lurching and she should be running in the opposite direction, but after so much time in Neverland she became desensitized to the sight. It seems like more and more creatures were making Neverland their home. She wasn't talking about just humans either. Though, a lot of the boys thought it a fun sport to hunt the creatures down. Sometimes they just didn’t know what they were dealing with.
"What the hell is going on?" She asked, leaning down to look at the trail of blood.
"Did my Lost Girl get a little lost?" Pan's mocking voice rang out. Tay could definitely see why some of the Lost Girls found him attractive, but she was definitely with (Name)- he was first and foremost an asshole.
"I'm over here!" She didn't want to argue with him though, that'd be fighting a losing battle.
"Tay, Tay, Tay, Tay," Devin's voice, but how? He should have been safe at home. "Help!"
"GUYS HELP!!" Tay yelled, Pan had to have heard her; he was just here a second ago.
"Tay please,” Devin begged.
"Devin I'm coming, hold on!" She yelled, following the unsettling trail of blood and broken branches that the thing had left behind.
"Tay, tasty ."
AAAAHHHH!!!!!
The scream pierced the silent air. You barely caught sight of a grey blur moving through the forest, carrying a pale figure you recognized. “TAY! Tay hold on!” When had the girl slipped away? Shit. It must have been when I was arguing with Pan, stupid, stupid now a girl’s going to pay for your mistake. You ran after the wendigo, following the paths in the ground. The distinct footprints disappeared suddenly. You jumped over some branches, before you literally ran into the rest of the group.
“Slow down there.” The voice’s arms wrapped around you and kept you from falling back onto your butt.
Oh of course it had to be the asshole. You grumbled mentally as you pulled yourself off of Pan.
“What happened?”
“You didn’t notice that Tay slipped away?!” You snapped.
“No! I was a little preoccupied!” Pan challenged. You shook your head.
“Ok, ok, I’m not here to argue with you, because look at where that got us the first time.” You took a sharp intake of breath as you closed your eyes. “We’re going to have to work together, for real this time. You’re connected with Neverland right? Do you know about any good underground caverns where this thing might be able to hide? Preferably somewhere cold and secluded.”
“… The caves under the mermaid’s lagoon would be useful.”
“Perfect. We’ll go there.”
“Ok, but those mermaids aren’t like what you think they are. They’re cold blooded killers. If we go in there, you’re going to have to follow my lead, no matter what I say or do.”
You knew that his statement was only addressed towards you. Felix and Benjamin probably already held an unspoken amount of trust for him. “… Don’t make me regret this or I swear if I die I’m haunting you as a ghost.”
“I promise I won’t let you die.”
“Peter Pan never fails,” Benjamin quoted.
“Listen to the kid.” Pan let out a little laugh.
“Oi, kid don’t be like him, he’s a terrible role model.” You warned.
Pan led the group of four towards the mermaid caves.
“I’m going to need the three of you to wait for me outside, stay on guard and if you hear singing, don’t listen to it,” Pan warned.
“Hold on, are you really sure you should go in alone?” You grabbed him by the arm and stopped him.
“What’d I say about listening to my orders?” Pan questioned, making you hesitate and let go of his arm. “Stay back, and don’t worry so much it makes you sound like an annoying old broad.”
“Watch it kid.” You glared at him, but he simply chuckled before he disappeared into the dark entrance of the cave.
“You shouldn’t question him so much…” Benjamin said hesitantly.
“Yea? And why’s that?” You asked.
“He’s the only one who really knows the rules of Neverland.”
“Is that so? You may have a point there, but most of the time,” you moved towards the caverns where Pan has just disappeared, “rules are meant to be broken.”
The only source of sunlight in the caves, were the beams of light that came in from a small sky roof above the so called mermaid lagoon. You stayed away from the lagoon since you couldn’t imagine a wendigo cohabitating with mermaids. You walked towards the darker ends, where you could see tracks in the dusty track. It’s official. I’m an idiot. You resisted the urge to slap yourself, reminding yourself that there were in fact lives at stake here.
The passageways were even more dimly lit than outside, the only light in the caverns being provided by some glowworms or something like that. You crept along on your tiptoes, dominant hand resting right over your knife which would be just in reach if you needed it. You’d come across a few winding tunnels, and you were marking your path by leaving a distinct scratch on the walls every now and then. Just to keep on track. You could only pray that the wendigo decided to hibernate, walking in like this was like walking in with a fresh meat sign hanging right above your head. The caves gradually grew lighter; there was another sky roof like ceiling somewhere near here.
You puckered your face, feeling your stomach reel at the metallic scent of spilled blood, and lots of it too. Red splattered the path beneath you, and you tried to push the sight away as you continued to follow the path in front of you. Come on… Be safe… You finally reached what looked like the exit of the seemingly endless cave. You pulled your knife out, knowing that if the wendigo was anywhere here then it was probably waiting for you in there. Your breath was practically visible in the chilled air. You crept forwards, listening to the own thrums of your heart. One… Two… Three. You crept out from behind the small wall that was obscuring you from the larger room. You gave a sigh of relief when you just caught sight of a single Lost Boys hanging from the rook of the cave by their feet. Well that can’t be comfortable. The stench of the room nauseated you, and you resisted the urge to heave all your breakfast- apple pie and all. The scattered bodies of fallen lost boys ranged anywhere from near skeletons to an indistinguishable pile of mangled limbs- the unwanted leftovers of a meal.
You got closer, and found that it wasn’t a boy that you were looking at, but Tay from earlier. “Tay, are you alright? Did it hurt you?”
“Besides digging its claws into me, no.”
“Well better than killing you.” You let out a small sigh of relief. “Here, I’ll cut you down, try not to scream alright?” She was tied a good twelve feet up, and there wasn’t anything in the cave that you could use to get some extra leverage on her right now. You positioned yourself, before taking your knife and throwing it up at the rope which bound her feet to the ceiling. You ran, positioning yourself directly under her to catch her. She only let out a small eep as she fell into your arms, you fell back on your butt from the force of her drop, but asides from that the two of you were fine. “Oww, there goes the booty.” You complained as you sat her up and stood. You went to retrieve your knife, avoiding any bodies and looking around warily for signs of the wendigo. You figured that you were in the clear as you went back to Tay and started to undo her ropes. She didn’t move from her position on the ground. “Where did it get you?” You asked, as you checked her for visible injuries.
“On the ankles.” She pointed down to her legs, making you wince.
“Ch…” You yanked at the bottom of your shirt, ripping the fabric into a long strip. “I’m going to tie your injury so it doesn’t bleed much more. If it hasn’t come after us yet then it has to be chasing after Pan or something,” you explained. You furrowed your brows at the odd looking purplish bruising around her ankle. You weren’t even sure if it was bruising, but you decided that you’d hold off on worrying about it until you got back to the camp with everyone else and got her some actual medical attention. You wrapped the other ankle as well, finding it in a similar state as the first.
“Pan?” Tay questioned weakly.
“Yea. He went in here before me. He probably ran into the wendigo. Unlucky bastard. But hey, he seems to know what he’s doing.” You shrugged. Peter Pan was supposed to be the undefeatable fairytale, you could only hope that it proved true and he didn’t rush to his death. You really hoped so at least. No matter how jerkish he was, you didn’t think he was that bad of a person at least. “Let’s get out of here,” you said. You hooked Tay’s arm around your shoulders and supported her as the two of you made your way out of the caves.
“Hey… (Name) right?”
“Yea?”
“Thanks.”
You smiled and nodded your head slightly. “Don’t thank me quite yet, we’ve still got to get out of here.”
“I… I feel so… s-”
“Hey! HEY! Tay!” You barked out roughly, not caring if anyone or anything heard you. You clicked your tongue before setting the unconscious girl down and lightly slapping her cheek to see if she would react.
Her eyes seemed to roll back in her head, revealing her whites. Her breathing grew shallow. You tried again for any response.
"TAY!"
