"That should be enough firewood to get us through 'til morning," Obi-Wan said as he laid down an armful of split logs next to the fireplace and shed his snow covered coat.
Satine patted the space beside her on the mattress and Obi-Wan did not hesitate to get under the covers with her. Since Qui-Gon was away on an overnight trip to get supplies, they had the cabin to themselves. In spite of the freezing weather on this Force forsaken moon and the fact that the Great Clan Wars still raged on, the two teenagers were determined to make the most of the evening.
Obi-Wan nestled his chest against Satine's back and wrapped his arms around her. Between their body heat and the mattress being laid on the floor in front of the hearth, the awful cold was almost bearable.
The fire's steady crackling sound and flickery golden glow took Satine back to the nights when her family would gather around a fire just like this one. Her memories of those evenings were sweet but since her parents were now dead and Bo-Katan was lost, remembering only made her feel more broken.
"What's wrong?" Obi-Wan asked as she tried to hide her silent tears.
Satine whispered, "I have a sister."
While Obi-Wan did not know much about Satine's past, he knew enough to know that it had been painful.
"She is strong and brave, but also reckless and easily angered. We used to be best friends and do everything together until..." Satine paused for a long moment. "Until our mother died. Her death drove us apart and we haven't been on good terms since."
"The last time I saw my sister was—was when we were told that our father had died and then I was made Duchess of Kalevala. I don't know if I will ever see her again," Satine faltered.
Obi-Wan knew what that felt like and murmured, "I remember a baby from before I went to the Temple."
"A baby?"
"Yes, I think I had a brother. Really don't remember him though. I wished I did, even if it was only his name."
The pair was silent as they both grieved the loss of their sibling and thought about what might have been.
"Obi?"
"Yes, love?"
"Do you ever think about having a baby of your own?"
More than a little startled by this question, Obi-Wan allowed the Force to flow through his hand which rested on her stomach. The answer he received was clear: there was no baby.
While he was relieved, Obi-Wan also realized that he hoped there would be a baby in there one day — a Kenobi-Kryze baby. He had no idea how Satine would respond to his desire. Even if she wanted to be the mother of his child, the Jedi were not supposed to have families. The entire issue made him upset and confused when it should have been simple and clear.
"I can hardly believe that women can get pregnant," he confessed to her.
"What!?"
"I've hardly ever seen a pregnant woman. And even though I know how babies are born, it is still incredibly strange to me."
Satine had never considered Obi-Wan's lack of exposure to something as normal as expecting mothers.
"A new life is created because two people love each other. It's nothing short of a miracle."
"Indeed, it is." She pointed out, "But you still haven't answered my question, Obi."
"Yes, I think about having a baby. With you."

Over the next two decades, Obi-Wan was promoted to the rank of Jedi Master, Satine became the Mand'alor of a united and peaceful Mandalorian system, and even the seemingly immutable Jedi Order changed.
It had taken the death of Qui-Gon Jinn at the hands of a Sith and an almost full-scale galactic war for the Jedi Council to realize the depths of its hypocrisy and see that the Order was crumbling from the inside out.
Qui-Gon had been in love with the Noorian Master Tahl and they bore a daughter. She was the living proof of attachment not leading to the Dark Side. Even though both her parents were brutally murdered when she was still a youngling, she did not turn to darkness. Kara Jinn was now a great Jedi Knight, same as her father and mother had once been.
While romantic relationships were by no means encouraged, having one would no longer result in expulsion from the Jedi Order. Obi-Wan's former Padawan, Anakin Skywalker, married the well known Naboo senator, Padmé Amidala, and they were expecting twins in less than three standard months. Master Kit Fisto and Master Aayla Secura were engaged. Rumor had it that Master Quinlan Vos and the Dark Jedi Asajj Ventress were dating.
After having hidden for so long, Obi-Wan and Satine struggled with the idea of abandoning secrecy. Busy schedules and the distance between Mandalore and Coruscant did not help any. So the couple settled for the few precious days when they could be alone together.
Satine wondered when she would see Obi again as she laid in bed and stared up at the ceiling. Thinking about him was a pleasant reprieve from dwelling on how miserably sick she felt. A medical droid had drawn her blood that morning, but —
A knock sounded at the door and Satine managed to push herself up into a sitting position without vomiting. Sick or not, she was still the Mand'alor and must maintain a semblance of dignity in front of another sentient being.
"Come in."
An unfamiliar woman clad in white scrubs entered the room, bowed, and explained, "I'm here to give you the results of your bloodwork."
While her calm, neutral expression remained the same, Satine frowned internally. It must be bad if they could not give her the results via Holopad or medical droid.
"And offer my deepest congratulations, Your Majesty. You're pregnant."
Satine's entire countenance changed as she made sense of the last two words. Her look of initial shock turned into a happy smile. This was a surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.
"Thank you," she whispered, unable to hide the joy in her voice.
"Here are your prenatal vitamins and these other pills should help with the nausea," the woman said as she handed Satine two bottles. "They are herbal and completely safe for the little one."
Satine thanked her again.
Before she left, the woman bowed and stated, "If you need anything else, Your Majesty, please let us know."
"I will."
Once Satine was alone, she grinned like the proverbial loth cat that got the blue-spotted preaky. She was ecstatic! She was pregnant! She was a mum! Obi-Wan was a father! She had to go tell Obi-Wan!
As a ruler, she had kept many secrets in her life, but this one was by far the hardest. Part of her wanted to holocom Obi right now even though she knew this news would be best delivered in person.
Via her Holopad she requested a small discrete ship be prepared and piloted by a droid crew. In her experience, droids were much more trustworthy than people. If they overheard a secret, they would not go share it with some moralless Holonews reporter. And you could always wipe a droid's memories, which was not an ethical option to do with people.
Satine then used her Holopad to select a few simple outfits for the wardrobe droid to pack for her. It was a nice change of pace to not need to bring any elaborate gowns or massive headdresses for this trip. Her clothes and shoes would be casual and comfortable which was a luxury given her line of work. A little jewelry and a small cosmetics kit would be all the accessories she required.
The Holonet claimed it was currently twenty-one hundred hours on Coruscant so Padmé should be home and able to answer her comm Satine decided.
"Hello?"
"Padmé, it's Satine."
The two women had been good friends for several years and there was no place for stiff formalities between them.
"Satine! It's wonderful to hear your voice!"
"Yours as well. I have a question. Do you know if Obi-Wan is on Coruscant right now? I was hoping to comm him, but it has been several days since we last spoke. I would hate for him to be off on some assignment and me comm him in the middle of the night."
Satine hated lying, especially to Padmé, but she also wanted her visit to be a surprise.
"Yes, he is. Anakin was just telling me at dinner how Obi-Wan shouted 'Anakin, no!' at Ahsoka instead of 'Ahsoka, no!' today."
"Old habits die hard," Satine chuckled. "Thank you, Padmé."
"Of course! We need to catch up soon."
"Yes, we do and I look forward to meeting the Skywalker twins."
Padmé laughed, "You wouldn't believe how big I am!"
A notification chime sounded from Satine's Holopad letting her know that her ship was ready to depart and her luggage was on board.
"I have to go."
"Be safe, my friend," Padmé said before turning off her commlink.
Satine got out of bed and thanked the Force that her personal landing platform was not very far away. After boarding the ship, she went directly to her quarters and crawled in bed. The gentle woosh of hyperspace soon lulled her to sleep.

As she gradually woke up, Satine became painfully aware of how hungry she was. The bedside table had a glass of water and a nutrition bar waiting for her, probably compliments of M4-RS. Grateful for the protocol droid's thoughtfulness, she ate and took a prenatal vitamin along with one of the nausea pills.
With her body's necessities fulfilled for the time being, Satine was able to focus on the things her mind needed. Meditation had been part of her daily routine ever since that fateful year on the run with two very special Jedi. She liked the quiet, the clarity and, most of all, the peace she found through being still with her deepest thoughts.
The silver droid entered the room an hour later and announced that they would be arriving on Coruscant in approximately thirty minutes. Satine did not open her eyes but thanked M4 and finished her meditation session with some breathing exercises.
She knew exactly what she wanted to wear: a flowy light blue dress because light blue was Obi-Wan's favorite color. Satine brushed her hair and applied some light makeup to match her simple attire, but mostly because she did not have the time or patience to do more. She decided that jewelry was far too much to bother with.
After the ship had been scanned and found clear of any weapons, they landed in the Tower of First Knowledge hangar. Satine disembarked quickly and headed off to find the father of her child.
Now that she was within range, she could track Obi-Wan's comm location. They had turned on the transmission feed between their comms several years ago. Satine had never been more grateful for this feature than she was as she made her way through the Temple's massive, but beautiful labrinth.
Despite the Jedi's chaste lifestyle and simple clothing, their home was elaborate. The Temple was much larger and more luxurious than the Sundari Royal Palace. She wondered where the funds had come from to even build such a place, but her thoughts were soon directed elsewhere.
At the end of the cavernous hall was a memorial to Qui-Gon Jinn. He had been immortalized by a large gold statue bearing his likeness. A nearby plaque told of how he had bravely fought a Sith to the death. Satine missed the unorthodox Jedi Master greatly and knew that he would be very happy for her and Obi-Wan.
The sounds of children talking and giggling ended her quiet moment. An assorted group of about a dozen younglings rounded the corner along with a kind looking Bothan woman. Fortunately, the little ones had nothing on their minds except visiting the nearby planetarium and their teacher was too busy keeping her clan in order to notice anything else.
As she resumed her walk, Satine reminded herself that she was here "To deliver a message to Master Kenobi" in case anyone asked. But she never needed to use her half-truth since she behaved as if she belonged.
Continuing to follow the signal from Obi-Wan's comm led her through a set of huge wooden doors. Behind them was a short passage which emptied onto a platform that several stone and dirt paths diverged from. These winding paths cut through potted plants and large displays of exotic foliage from across the known galaxy. Benches lined these paths and encouraged inward reflection.
Little bridges crossed bubbling streams. Fountains could be heard trickling from anywhere in the massive chamber, along with the roar of the waterfall at the room's center. Some fountains were concealed by the shrubbery, but others were brilliantly displayed in the center of stone walkways.
Logic told Satine that she had just walked into another room, but the rest of her senses assured her that she had just walked outside on a jungle planet. Perhaps she had walked through a portal instead of a door. The strangest thing was that Satine was almost certain she had been here before.
The Room of a Thousand Fountains was the backdrop of several of Obi-Wan's stories. It was where his first real lightsaber duel happened, where his childhood nemesis had died right in front of him, and where he had rescued a friend who was chained to the bottom of a pool from being drowned. Many memories had been made in this place and he was about to make a new one.
As he walked along with Anakin, Obi-Wan felt a presence in the Force that made his heart soar. It was the presence of the woman he had always loved.
"—and that's just absolutely ridiculous, don't you think?" Anakin asked.
"Hmm? Umm, well..."
Obi-Wan's dear friend gave him a knowing and somewhat sly smile. "You haven't heard a word I said."
Unlike Anakin, Obi-Wan was not nearly as comfortable with others knowing about his romantic feelings and his cheeks flushed with embarrassment.
"Go on. We can finish this conversation anytime." Anakin added, "I hope you will at least tell Satine I said hello."
"Right," Obi-Wan said quietly as he quickly excused himself.
Once he caught sight of her, he could not look away. Everything from her clothes to the way she carried herself told him that she was not here as a planetary leader, but as herself which was someone she did not get to be very often.
When her piercing blue eyes met his, Obi-Wan could not hold back any longer. He ran to her, caught her up in his arms, and spun her around. Satine laughed and pressed a kiss onto his lips. Obi-Wan pulled her against his chest and held her there.
He whispered revervently, "I've missed you, Satine."
"It feels like we've been apart for a lifetime," she agreed, but her emotions were tangled up and difficult to make sense of.
"What's going on, my love?"
Satine stepped back a little and looked up at him with uncertainty on her beautiful face.
"I'm pregnant, Obi."
After a few seconds of shocked silence, Obi-Wan remembered that he needed to respond.
"I'm—I'm a father?"
She nodded as happy tears ran down her cheeks. He beamed with joy and rested a hand against Satine's still very trim stomach. This time there was a new presence in the Force, a small and perfect one. Obi-Wan was overwhelmed by the love that he had for this child, his child.
"I want to marry you, Satine."
Her voice was filled with affection when she replied, "I want to marry you right now."
The Mandalorian concept of getting married was very different from other cultures. There were no engagement gifts, fancy dresses, huge services, bridesmaids, or even a holy man and witnesses. Since the marriage only involved the couple, the simple exchanging of vows between the two was all that it took to become married.
"Mhi solus tome."
"We are one together."
"Mhi solus dar'tome."
"We are one when parted."
"Mhi me'dinui an."
"We share all."
"Mhi ba'juri aliit."
"We will raise a family."

Satine was blessed with an easy remainder of her pregnancy, at least until the fifteenth hour of labor. Her contractions were still regular yet had stopped growing closer together. No progress was being made aside from her strength and energy being drained. Nothing the midwife tried over the next two hours helped further along the birthing process.
"Perhaps some privacy would be helpful," Obi-Wan finally suggested to her. The elderly woman nodded and took her leave.
After settling into the massive bed next to his wife, he ran his fingers through her sweaty blonde hair and remarked, "I couldn't do this if we were in a medcenter."
"A home birth does have its advantages," Satine murmured.
He kissed the back of her neck and laid his hand on her baby bump.
She all but shoved him off and whined, "I feel dirty."
Several months of mood swings had made him accustomed to this sort of reaction. One minute she would all be over him and the next she could not stand the sound of his breathing.
Obi-Wan could not complain though. He knew Satine loved him no matter what her hormones were doing at the moment. And they had made plenty of passionate love together ever since she had assured him it was safe for the baby.
"How about a bath then?"
When no protest was made, he decided to take that as a "yes" and headed to the refresher to prepare everything for her. The bathtub was the size of a small pool and took some time to fill. While the tap ran, Obi-Wan busied himself with putting on some quiet classical music. Next, came the lighting of a few candles, the scentless kind because pregnancy had made Satine's sense of smell very sensitive. Lastly, he sprinkled her favorite type of bath salt into the water and hoped it would help ease her pain.
He returned to the bedroom and helped Satine get to her feet. She padded into the 'fresher with the strange endearing gait that had developed a few weeks ago.
A large linen shirt was all Satine wore and he gently eased it off over her head. Obi-Wan never grew tired of taking in the beauty of his wife's body. She was stunning and the new curves that had appeared over the last few months only made her more breathtaking to behold.
Satine moaned a little as she lowered herself into the tub. The water lightened the extra weight of the baby and the warmth soothed her aching muscles.
"Will you?" she asked Obi-Wan, gesturing to the washcloth and soap.
All she had to do was say the word and he would do whatever she asked.
As he brought the soapy washcloth to her shoulders, Satine stopped him and clarified, "Will you join me?"
Obi-Wan silently mouthed the word "oh" and soon his robes and undergarments were on the floor next to Satine's sleeping shirt.
She gave him a smile as he sat down next to her in the bath and began shampooing her hair. When he had finished, Obi-Wan picked up the washcloth and ran it over her shoulders, down her arms, and along her back. Ever the gentleman, he used extra care while washing her tender swollen breasts. He wished that the white suds he spread on her pale skin could rinse away the stress of the last few hours. Obi-Wan soaped up Satine's big belly and grinned when he felt the baby kicking. After washing the length of her legs, he scrubbed and massaged her poor feet until she suddenly shuddered.
"Is it the baby?" Obi-Wan asked instantly.
She shook her head and said, "I can't do this."
"What?"
"I can't do this!" she repeated. "I can't have the baby!"
"What do you mean?"
"The contractions are still the same and it's my fault!" Satine cried.
Obi-Wan pulled her into his arms and whispered, "It is not your fault, my dear. It's not anyone's fault. The baby is just taking a little longer to get here is all. You're okay. The baby's okay. Everything is okay."
"Are you sure?"
"As sure as I am that the sun will rise tomorrow."
Feeling a little better about the situation, Satine cuddled up to him and he rubbed her back. Eventually her eyes closed, her breathing slowed, and she fell asleep. But Obi-Wan was in no hurry to get out of the bath.
How had his wish from so many years ago become true? A Kenobi-Kryze baby was about to be born. How had he ended up with the most smart and beautiful and loving woman in the entire galaxy as his wife? Wife. Obi-Wan loved that word because it was a reminder of the sacred promise that they had made to each other. They were one together. They were one when parted. They shared all. And they were about to raise the newest little member of their family.
Gingerly, he scooped Satine out of the water and carried her back to bed. Not wanting to wake her for something as trivial as dressing, Obi-Wan pulled the top of the bed sheets up to her neck.
Once he had put on a fresh set of robes, he stepped outside to find the midwife. She nodded approvingly when she saw that mum was asleep and watched over her while Obi-Wan, despite his best efforts, dozed off for a few hours.
As time passed, the contractions became stronger and more frequent. Satine woke up and writhed under the pain that gripped her entire body.
"You are doing wonderful, love," Obi-Wan assured her again and again.
After nearly thirty hours of labor, the midwife insisted that now was the time to push. Satine whimpered and suddenly shrill cries came from a little pair of lungs that had just drawn in air for the first time.
With the baby cradled in his arms Obi-Wan looked to Satine and asked, "What are we going to name our son?"
"Korkie," she said breathlessly as her husband handed her their crying newborn.
The little guy quickly calmed down and latched on to his mother's breast. The tiny mouth working her nipple felt strange, but also made Satine feel connected in a new way to the child she had carried inside her for nine months.
Both parents were in absolute awe of the perfect baby boy the Force had blessed them with. He had ten tiny fingers, ten tiny toes, little wisps of auburn hair like his father's, a straight nose like his mother's and a beautiful pair of blue eyes that were all his own.
"You are amazing," Obi-Wan told Satine after sharing a lengthy kiss with her.
"I couldn't have done it without you."
⟪⁕⊰◈⊱⁕⟫⋰𖤍⋱⟪⁕⊰◈⊱⁕⟫
Six weeks later, the Kenobi-Kryze clan arrived at Padmé and Anakin's apartment on Coruscant. Ahsoka, Rex, and Cody met them at the landing platform. Obi-Wan hugged his unofficial Padawan. Both of the clones clapped their former general on the back in congratulations.
Rex peeked at the baby in Satine's arms and told Obi-Wan, "He's like a little clone of you!"
"And he's going to grow up to be a good man just like his father," Cody stated with conviction. "While we would like to stay longer, Rex and I must return to work now, sir."
"But we will see again before you leave," Rex promised and Cody nodded in agreement.
Once the remaining four were inside, a very familiar golden protocol droid exclaimed, "Oh, Master Obi-Wan! So good to see you! I will let Master Anakin know you have arrived."
"Thank you, Threepio."
Anakin soon appeared with one of the twins strapped to the front of his chest. "Obi-Wan! Satine! Padmé is just finishing nursing Luke. Now where's my nephew?"
Obi-Wan motioned to the bundle of blankets his wife held.
"Hi! Hi Korkie! I'm your Uncle Anakin! I'm very happy to see you!"
Korkie responded with two sleepy blinks and a little yawn.
"Would you like to hold him?" offered Satine.
"Oh, no, no!" Anakin corrected himself, "I mean I'd love to, but Leia here can get extremely jealous sometimes."
"Sounds like someone else I know," Obi-Wan commented.
"Hey!"
Ahsoka snickered at her master's indignation.
Padmé walked in with a blond haired baby boy on her hip and exclaimed, "Obi-Wan! Satine! It's so wonderful to see you and the baby! He's so precious!"
"I'll hold Luke so you can hold Korkie," Obi-Wan offered.
Padmé handed off her son and told him, "Here, go to Uncle Obi-Wan."
"Hello there!" Obi-Wan chuckled, "You look so much like your father."
"It was a nightmare baby proofing the place," Anakin remarked as he sat down next to his old master on the long beige sofa and took Leia out of the baby carrier.
"At least we don't have to worry about that for a while yet."
"Don't worry, Master. When that time comes, I'm more than glad to share my wisdom with you."
Obi-Wan rolled his eyes. "You've only been a father a few months more than I have."
With a smirk, Anakin countered, "Yes, but I was a father first."
"I can't imagine having twins," Satine said as she looked over at the two Skywalker babies.
Leia and Anakin were playing some sort of hand-clapping game together while Luke busied himself with petting Obi-Wan's beard.
Padmé smiled at Korkie and laughed, "I can't imagine only having one baby."
"Even though they're twins, they are so..." Satine paused as she searched for the right word. "different."
"Luke is a lover. Leia is a fighter. Both of them are smart and fearless. Just give Korkie a few more months and he'll have a unique little personality too," Padmé assured her friend.
"Would you like to hold him, Ahsoka?" offered Satine.
Ahsoka's cerulean eyes lit up and she asked, "Really?"
"Just support his neck here and— Look at you! You're a natural!"
Padmé agreed, "She's had plenty of practice with Luke and Leia. They love their Auntie 'Oka."
The Togruta girl blushed and gently rocked Korkie to sleep.
"He needs to be changed," Satine said a few minutes later.
Ahsoka answered, "No, he doesn't, he's just..." and then she stopped before she got to "fine" because Korkie had blinked awake soaking wet.
Jedi sometimes knew what was going to happen even if it was only a few seconds before it occurred, but for a non-Force-user to predict the future was unheard of. Ahsoka stared at Satine in wonder.
"How did you know that?" she asked.
Satine took Korkie so she could clean him up and replied, "It's what mothers do."
Little Leia soon grew cranky and Padmé took her to go nurse. Ahsoka passed Korkie to Uncle Anakin and Obi-Wan set Luke into Auntie Satine's lap. The sweet little boy rested his head against her chest and made a contented "uhwawa" sound. She slowly rubbed his back and talked quietly to him.
"I'm your favorite uncle, aren't I?" Anakin asked Korkie playfully. "I bet your daddy has told you about lots of our great adventures together."
"And how you're responsible for getting us into most of those 'adventures,'" Ahsoka chimed in.
Anakin made a mock scolding face and whispered shhhhh.
"Have you ever heard about how I saved his skin on Cato Neimoidia? It's not a story your daddy would tell you."
Obi-Wan pinched the bridge of his nose and sighed, "Anakin, you did not save me that time. In fact, you ruined my plan and almost got us both killed. Not to mention that war could have raged on for years because of that incident."
"Nonsense! We are both here! It was a successful rescue!"
Ahsoka teased, "Sure it was, Master."
"They're all crazy, aren't they, Luke?" Satine whispered to her drowsy nephew.
Anakin proceeded to tell a very colorful version of how Obi-Wan went to Cato Neimoidia to negotiate peace after their capital city had been bombed during a difficult time politically in the galaxy.
"He's hungry," Obi-Wan interrupted.
Neither Anakin nor Ahsoka could not sense anything aside from the little guy staring at the ceiling, but a few minutes later Korkie began crying.
"Wait, how did you do that?"
Obi-Wan shrugged. "It's called parenting, Anakin. You might want to do some research on the subject."
"Haha. But really? How'd you do it?"
"Just paying attention to his needs."
"Well, you only have one baby and he's not mobile yet so that makes it easier," Anakin noted.
Padmé returned with a much happier baby girl than she had left with. Ahsoka took the sleeping Luke from Satine so she could go feed her son. Anakin wrapped an arm around his wife's waist and Uncle Obi-Wan took Leia into his arms. Her big expressive brown eyes looked up at him seriously before she cracked a mischievous grin. He laughed and bounced his high spirited niece on his knee.
In the stillness of this moment, a thought came to Obi-Wan. All his life he had missed the father, mother, and brother that he never got to know. Now he had a wife and a son of his own. Cody, Rex, Ahsoka, Anakin, Padmé, Luke, and Leia were his family too. He loved and was loved by these people. Love, not blood, was what made them aliit.
