Ch.1 | The Beginning of Change

Picture above is Allison right now, the same age as Alphonse; six years old.

Allison's view

"Brother, does Mom like us practicing alchemy?" I asked my second older brother Alphonse or Al, who was lying on the floor surrounded by a series of alchemy books. Some were opened while others were piled upon each other.

Tracing the chalk against the floor, I finished drawing my transmutation circle. My brothers and I were in Dad's room, or what Mom says, his study room for practicing and researching alchemy. Big brother Ed wanted us to learn all kinds of alchemy, I didn't say no. It's really fun learning more and more everyday, it's interesting finding new forms.

"Yeah, I think so. Mom is always saying we're a lot like Dad when we use alchemy." Al answered smiling at me. Al grabbed another book

"It makes her happy seeing that were like Dad." Ed added, staring down at his transmutation circle with a smile.

I nodded with a giggle. Their right. Mom gets really happy when we practice alchemy, she says we're like daddy as Ed said. But, sometimes I think it makes her sad too... Ever since Dad left us, she's been different. She talks to us and loves us like always, but mom just isn't the same without daddy. I wish Dad would come back for mom, for us.

"Ed, Al, Ali? Where are you three?" Mom's voice rang out, just behind the door.

Mom! Grinning, I looked at the door, waiting for her to come in.

Mom opened the door, and her eyes widened. "Oh my, you three... Are you in here making a mess in your Father's study, again?" Mom scolded. "And Ed, you know better than to scribble on the floor. Same goes for you Ali."

I pouted. It's not scribbling, it's alchemy.

"Yeah, butbit's not scribbling. Here, watch!" Ed said, and placed his hands on the ground.

Blue sparks came out the transmutation circle, a small wooden bird was made out of the wood from the floor. It was very detailed also. That's so cool! Ed made a bird, it looks so pretty! I can't even do that yet.

"Oh my, that's alchemy, isn't it?" Mom stated before sitting down with us. "Did your father teach you that?"

I frowned slightly, "He can't." I mumbled.

"Right. How can he teach us if he's not here?" Ed said.

"We read about it in his books!" Al added.

"Big brother's are right! Dad has a lot of books about alchemy in here." I said, flipping through one of Dad's books.

Mom stared at the bird for a while, then looked at us. "I can't believe you've done this..." Mom said.

Oh. I hung my head, with a frown on my face. Brothers did the same.

"I'm sorry, did we do something wrong?" Ed asked.

Mom is mad at us.

"Oh no! It's great!" Mom exclaimed with her hands clapped together. "You definitely take over your father! My little geniuses, you make me so proud!"

I grinned and looked at my brothers. We all had the same look, we were going to study way more just to make her proud. From here, we all became obsessed with alchemy. We read all Dad's books, we learned from them, we practiced and practiced till we were able to transmute pretty well.

[ IN THE SUMMER ]

Mom was always proud of us and what we built. We had gotten much better, especially big brother Ed, he's the one who improved the most. Me and Al were about the same level.. It made mom encourage us to do our best, and we did. We listened, that was all the encouragement we needed at the time. But, that was till a sickness came by into Resembol...and took Mom away from us; forever.

I remember exactly how it happened...

"Bye, Granny Pinako!" I shouted then ran out the door with my brothers Ed and Al, not even bothering to say goodbye to Winry. She didn't like me for some reason, so I don't even talk to her unless I have to. I think it's because I'm close to Ed, and with her crush on him, it makes her jealous of me. I really don't understand why she is jealous, I'm his baby sister, that's all I will be.

"Bye, Granny! Bye, Winry!" The boys shouted sprinting, trying to get beside me.

"Come on brothers! Mom is waiting for us!" I shouted, my hands cupped over my mouth. They both tried running faster, but it was futile.

"We're coming, we're coming, Ali!" Ed shouted back.

Giggling, I slowed down and started walking. Ed and Al caught up panting slightly. I laughed at them.

"Haha! Big brothers, you're both out of shape!" I laughed as I pointed at them, teasing them in a way.

Ed glared at me while Al scratched the back of his neck. Ed started yelling at me like usual, saying how he's older and I should be nicer. There really wasn't a difference even if he was older, I act a little older kinda like him. My stomach suddenly twisted, I had an urge to run home as fast I could. A frown went on my lips, something really bad happened....
I know it. I can feel it.

"Ali, what's wrong?" Al asked, making Ed look at me too.

I gulped, and didn't look at them. "I have a really bad feeling all of a sudden..." I said.

Ed's eyes widened, Al simply stared at me in confusion. I don't know what happening, before I knew it my body moved on it's own. I ran down the path that led us home, not even turning back for a second. I needed to get home.

"Ali! Stop!" They pleaded.

Mom... My stomach twisted even more at the thought of her. My eyes widened, could this feeling be about mom!? No..i-it can't be.. I ran even faster, ignoring the slight pain in my legs, and pleas coming from my brothers. I ran home as fast as I could. I burst through the door. I wish I hadn't run home, opened the door, and seen what was right in front of my very eyes. There she was, my mom, our mom, sprawled across the floor, motionless, and pale... My knees knees buckled and I collapsed to the floor next to her in mere seconds.

I put my hand to her neck, checking for a pulse or any sign that she was still alive. There was just one pulse, but it was very faint. Mom was alive. She had a chance.

Ed and Al opened the door, and walked over to me.

"Sis?" Ed asked. "What's wrong?"

We need to get her on a bed, we can't let her die.

"Ed, Al! Help me carry Mom to a bed, hurry! She collapsed because of the sickness! It's getting to her!" I yelled.

Ed and Al jumped into action, and helped me carry Mom. I grunted at her weight, she was really heavy for us, were only kids. Grunting and groaning, we somehow made it to her bed. We laid her down, put the covers over her body.

"Ed, go get an washcloth, make sure you dip it in cold water first!" I ordered, he nodded before running out the room. I turned to Al, "Al, get Winry and Pinako! We need all the help we can get!" I said.

Ed came in with the washcloth, we put in in Mom's forehead. Every now and then we would switch the cloth with a colder one to cool down her fever. Finally, Winry and Granny Pinako came running in. Winry was full of looks of pity, while Granny made herself useful and actually helped Mom. Granny said she was fine for now, but she didn't know for sure if she would...make it. It was fine for us, it encouraged us to help Mom no matter what it took!

We spent days, looking up anyone who knew Dad or was an acquaintance of his. The people we found, would receive handwritten letters from us, asking for them to tell us our Dad's location. Still, none of that worked. Out of all the letters, none ever were replied to. Mom spent days, looking out the window of her room like she thought Dad would come walking down the sidewalk and come home. That was a dream she wished would come true, one that would probably, never come true. Big brothers and I lost hope in our Dad, Ed now hated our Dad for leaving a Mom when she's now in this state. Al on the other hand, couldn't bare holding a grudge against Dad. He loved him still, matter all Al was very forgiving a kind. I held one, he wasn't the Dad I used to know anymore, I only knew of him as a father who abandoned his children, the man who left his wife to suffer in loneliness.

A week had passed, Mom wasn't getting any better. She was getting much worse as days passed. Then the day came...

I opened the door to Mom's room, Ed was watching over her. I walked over to them with a bright smile, one that my Mom loves.

"Hi Ed, hi Mom." I greeted happily.

Neither of them responded, I noticed Ed's shoulders shaking and heard small hiccups. I bit my lip and grabbed Ed's shoulder, catching his attention. His eyes were red and tears were sliding down his face. Why is he crying? Why's big brother crying? D-Did... No. I shook my head, Mom couldn't have died, right?

Taking I deep breath, I asked Ed, "Big brother, why are you crying? Is...is M-Mom gone?"

Ed glanced at my eyes then looked down in shame. My eyes widened and I ran to Mom's side. She can't be dead, she can't!

I grabbed ahold of her cold hand, "M-Mom?" No answer, only silence. "M-Mom!?" Once again, nothing. "Mom!" I screamed, throwing myself around her.

I sobbed on her body. Mom! Why did you leave us, why!

"Mom! No, no, no, no! Come back, please!" I screamed louder than before.

At the moment Al burst through the door, panting heavily. I felt their eyes in me.

"Ali, what's wrong?" Al asked nervously, "I heard you screaming? Ed, why are you crying? Why are you guys so sad?"

Tears poured down my face, the more I looked at Mom. It's our fault..the sickness got to her...now...she's dead!

"Ali, is everything alright? Ed-?" Al started.

"She's dead..." I whispered out lowly.

I felt him tense up at my words.

"W-What? I think I heard you wrong..." Al stuttered.

"Mom, she's dead." I said louder than before.

"What!?" He gasped.

I clenched my teeth tightly, for another sob was trying to escape my lips.

"She's right Al, Mom is gone..." Ed said.

He walked over, as soon as he did, the reaction was the same. Looking down before her, he stared in shock, surprise but most of all, sadness.

"W-What..? No-No... Mom?" Al whispered, his voice cracking.

I shook my head, "Al stop, she's gone.."

"M-Mom...! M-Mom!" Al shouted as he shook her.

A series of sobs came from all of us, we moaned over her body. Which was now, deadly pale. The color that signaled, death.

"The sickness...it got her..." I muttered sadly, "We should've taken mom to a doctor! If we did she would be here still, she wouldn't be dead!" I screamed, holding my head as I did.

All we did was cry and cry over Mom, we couldn't stop. She was the only one who encouraged us to do more alchemy, she was the one that made us smile, laugh, we loved her with all our heart. Our own sweet, kind hearted, lovable, beautiful, mom, was now dead. What were we supposed to do without her? Dad isn't here, now Mom isn't either, all we really have let is Winry and Granny Pinako. The only people left we consider family.

Another week passed. A small funeral was made for Mom, of course it was only a few people. Me, Al, Ed, Winry, and granny Pinako. Yes, we had lost the light in our world, that one precious person that kept us happy. Would that stop us from finding ways to bring her back? No. We would find a way to bring her back, through alchemy. Some thing called, human transmutation. I found it an alchemy book and told Ed about it. He liked the idea. Days upon days, we researched what you needed for human transmutation. It was really simple, you needed the components inside the human body. Getting our hands on the supplies was easy too, the hard part was finding a teacher that would help us with our alchemy. Our alchemy was beginner, not good enough to try human transmutation. That when we met a woman who caught our eye. We met her during a storm and begged her to take us a her apprentices. She said no at first, but agreed after a while. She trained us, but in a weird way.

She told us that we were to survive on an island without the use of alchemy, only a knife, and figure out what she meant by, 'all in one, one is all.' A month was the amount of time we stayed there for. We got attacked by some creepy man, and animals. It was a scary experience, I was scared throughout the whole thing. I had my brothers who protected me, I was grateful for that. For if I was alone, I would've quit in fear. After all that time on the island, None of us could figure out what she meant by 'all is one, one is all.' That was until the last day, we got it. Teacher was pleased enough with our answer and took us in as her apprentices.

When we returned to Dublith with teacher. We spent six long months training, in both martial arts, and alchemy.

Now all we had to do was wait for the day. We would actually commit human transmutation.
