Chapter Seven
The morning sky brightens slowly over the city. Fleur stands in the office window, watching the rim of the sunrise appear at the horizon and gleam across the skyline. Her coffee steam swirls across the glass.
'Hey slacker, back to work.'
Fleur smiles as she turns around. 'Hey, boss.'
Mei smiles and embraces her friend. 'What time did you get here?'
'Not too long ago.'
'How the planning going?' Mei asks, heading towards the coffee counter.
'Oh,' Fleur says, following her friend, 'it turns out they want to go with another company. Better quote.'
'Oh no, you're joking!'
'No,' Fleur smiles sadly.
'I'm sorry,' Mei pours two sugars into her cup. 'I know this must be stressing you out.'
'Yeah, of course it is,' Fleur sighs. 'I really want things to work out here.'
'I know,' Mei touches her friend's arm. 'It would be so cool if we could work here together. Maybe I can find a way to help. I'll sniff around and see if there are any people looking for someone.'
'Please,' Fleur pouts, 'I've got like another week to get a client. Otherwise I'm out of here.'
'We'll get you a client,' Mei smiles. She drinks her coffee and asks the barista for another.
'Hey slow down there,' Fleur laughs, 'you'll give yourself palpitations.'
'Palpitations will keep me awake,' Mei smiles, pouring another two sugars in. 'I was up so late working on this pitch and I am presenting today. Got to get my tail bushy and my eyes bright and bag-less.'
'Good luck,' Fleur smiles and Mei waves over her shoulder on her way to the office. Fleur walks down the passage to the trainee offices. Four desks share a large room with a rough blue carpet and a single small window in the corner. None of the other desks are occupied yet.
Fleur plops down and sighs.
By the time midday has arrived, Fleur heads to Mei's office but finds her friend isn't there. She makes her way towards the cafeteria but before she gets there Mei finds her.
'Hey,' she says, out of breath, 'I was looking for you.'
'I was looking for you too,' Fleur smiles.
'There's a walk in. Like, a new client. And he requested you.'
'Me?' Fleur frowns. 'That's weird.'
'It is,' Mei says, 'but we won't complain given that you need this client to be able to keep working here so lets go!' She takes Fleur's hand and guides her back up the stairs.
'All I heard is that he has recently inherited a house and wants to re-do it. Everything, I think they said. Potentially a good client, it sounds like. A man, so boost your boobs up,' Mei's hand makes for her bra but Fleur scoots out of the way.
'Uh, okay friend, lets keep the hand out of my shirt.'
'Oh, sure yeah, okay cool cool cool, yeah, he's in boardroom two.'
'Okay, going. Mei,' she says turning, 'slow down on the coffee okay?'
'Okay!' Mei turns and makes her way back to her office.
Fleur turns towards the door and takes a deep breath, allowing a smile to spread across her lips. Peeking behind her, she quickly adjusts her shirt and opens the door with a smile.
Perched on the chair with one leg over the other, in a navy suit and black shirt, is Josh.
