— I can give it a try!
It was a late Saturday afternoon in Miyagi Prefecture, the sun had barely started to sun and there was a small breeze that took over the weather. The Karasuno volleyball team had all been studying at Nishinoya's house, all sitting around the Yus family's small dining room table, squishing next to each other as much as they could to make room for everyone to sit around together. Around the table, most friends sat next to each other, going around the table it went Nishinoya at the head of the table, then next to him was Tanaka, then Kami, then Sonmi, Asahi, Sugawara, Daichi, Yamaguchi, Tsukishima, Hinata, Kageyama, and then Ennoshita who sat next to Nishinoya. Though most grades had been trying to sit next to each other, Sonmi had decided she would rather sit next to Kami since she was not wanting to be near Tsukishima. It was a mere coincidence that Asahi sat next to her, or so she thought, he probably sat next to her on purpose, which she certainly didn't mind.
"Hinata quit it!"
"I'm not doing anything."
This conversation could sum up how studying was going for the Karasauno boys volleyball team, absolutely nothing was getting done and people were getting easily annoyed with everyone. Or at least one person could be described as annoyed, that person being Kei Tsukishima, having he was not getting any of his studying done or helping everyone else study either. The boy was sitting across from none other than Sonmi, just his luck right? Not to mention she was sitting next to Asahi of all people, like he hadn't just told her how he felt about her and him. To his demise, he did tell Sonmi he wouldn't try to change his ways for her, so he could see why she did this, but it didn't stop him from getting annoyed. Especially when he saw the two getting so close, their shoulders and hands touching and he could only imagine their legs had been touching as well. This further infuriated the boy, as much as he tried to ignore it, he couldn't stand the sight.
Across from Tsukishima, Sonmi sat unknowingly of how the boy was thinking, she instead was having the time of her life. The girl was helping Tanaka and Nishinoya as much as she could, seeing she was a grade below the boys, along with the help from Ennoshita. Sonmi didn't see the point in her and Tsukishima trying to help Hinata and Kageyama especially since Tsukshima seemed too sure he could do it himself. This could've been the reality but Sonmi had only thought this way to avoid Tsukishima, again. Sonmi was back into her avoiding Tsukishima mindset like she had been only a thousand times before, but she certainly didn't mind it. These days see been ignoring him only made her feel better, knowing she didn't have to deal with his passive aggressiveness towards her or the confusing feelings he had for her. Sonmi had been focusing on herself and her finals coming up instead of worrying about what Tsukishima was thinking of her.
Tsukishima hadn't managed to get anything done while being at Nishinoyas', he was too preoccupied with being irritated, it wasn't until Hianta asked for his help that he snapped out of his funk.
"Tsukishima can you go over this practice problem and tell me if I got it right," Hinata asked, passing down his notebook to Tsukishima.
The blonde boy grabbed the notebook, looking over the jumble of words with heavy spelling an grammatical errors, he scoffed, "This isn't even readable, it's literally illiterate. I don't know what it says."
Yamaguchi threw his head up at the words, "Let me see, maybe I can help." Yamaguchi grabbed the notebook out of his friends' hands and tried his best to read the words. The boys' face quickly turned from happy to confused as he turned the notebook sideways to even try to read it, "Yeah I got nothing."
Hinata sighed, his face looking defeated, "I'm doomed."
"Yeah, one hundred percent," Tsukishima said crossing his arms.
"Hold on," Yamaguchi spoke, placing the notebook down, "Sonmi," He called over, causing the girl to look up from her notebook, "Can you come to help us?" The girl nodded, now standing up from her seat.
Tsukishima watched as Sonmi stood up, eyeing her up and down to see what he was fully wearing. She was wearing a white tank top, with a black lacy half top that cut off around her chest, she was also wearing a dark black pleated skirt and white socks that came up to around her knees. Tsukishima didn't realize how much he was staring at her until he saw a sudden hand motion, the boy snapped out of his gaze to see Sonmi was no longer standing there and Asahi was waving his hand at the boy. It didn't take him long to give Asahi a smug look, causing Asahi to give him one back.
Sonmi walked around the table, now standing between Yamaguchi and Tsukishima, "What's up?" She asked, smiling at the green-haired boy. Sonmi could feel Tsukishimas' brown eyes piercing her from the side, which caused her to turn more towards Yamaguchi.
"Can you read this and help Hinata?"
Sonmi slightly bent down to read the notebook, reading over the lines of messy words, "It says the man was running to symbolize the later failings of all the people in his life running out of it."
Both Tsukishima and Yamaguchi stared at each other, then back up to Sonmi, "How did you manage to read this? It's illegible." Tsukishima asked, "Not to mention, how did Hinata actually get the question right?"
Sonmi looked to Tsukishima, which was the first time the pair had locked eyes that night, "My brother has awful handwriting so I had to teach myself to read it," The girl bent down to grab the notebook from the table, "And Tsukishima, maybe Hinata got the question right because he's studying and believe it or not, he can be smart."
Tsukishima had wanted to respond to her comment, but he quickly realized that everyone was staring at him. The boy thought of this as a test from Sonmi, seeing if he would insult her in front of everyone, "You're right Sonmi."
And like that, it seemed like everyone stopped what they were doing, for a moment everyone was instead in shock at what Tsukishima said to Sonmi. The boy had almost seemed to shut his mouth and actually not be mean for just a moment.
Sonmi didn't even give Tsukishima the time of day, she ignored his comment and decided it would just be better to not acknowledge the boy. Though the small comment did mean that Tsukishima was trying to make an effort to be nicer to her in front of everyone, she couldn't get past the boys' earlier comments about how he wouldn't change his ways. The girl sat down back next to Asahi, scoffing silently to herself.
Asahi took note of her frustrated sigh, stopping his writing to look to his side, "You okay?" He asked quietly, hoping everyone else's talking wouldn't let everyone hear their conversation.
"Yeah," She started, quickly looking to her Asahi and then back to her notebook, "It's just annoying that Tsukishima is supposed to be helping them and I feel like I'm helping them more than he is."
"That's cause he thinks' he's so smart when he's probably not all that smart." He joked, causing Sonmi to chuckle, he placed his hand on her leg under the table, "Don't pay attention to him, he's just being an asshole, per usual." He joked again, a soft blush now appearing on his face.
Sonmi could feel her face heat up as she laughed at his joke again, quickly he removed his hand and laughed along with her, "You're right." The girl agreed.
From across the table, Tsukishima could feel his blood boiling, his grip on his pencil getting stronger as he watched Sonmi and Asahi flirt with each other. Though he didn't know what they were talking about, he just knew it was about him or something about him, he didn't know how he knew but he just did, which only further annoyed him. The boy expressed how this was something that annoyed him, and here Sonmi was, doing it right in front of him. Though the two had no boundaries or labels, he wished he could say something to her and tell her how he felt, but he knew Sonmi was ignoring him. The boy stared at Sonmi while she was doing her work, she was slightly bending over the table, and her hair fell from behind her ear to fall to the sides of her face, he was also getting a view of her full collarbones and a slight look at her cleavage. He didn't mean to look at her in any sort of objectifying way, his eyes were just lurking. She looked absolutely breathtaking, her hair, her makeup, and don't even get him started on what she was wearing. Her whole outfit was something Tsukishima found so attractive and he couldn't help but feel like Sonmi was teasing him. From dressing all pretty to ignoring him, and to top it off also flirting with Asahi, he felt like she was trying to make him jealous. Tsukishima decided to take his anger out by trying to read his practice work and ignoring Sonmi like how she had been doing to him.
Sonmi was trying to do her homework while sitting next to Kami who was messing with Tanaka. The pair had been pushing each other around for the last twenty minutes about a stupid joke or something Sonmi had not cared to listen to. The pushing continued until Tanaka finally pushed Kami so hard into the table that a glass of water spilled onto the table which spilled onto Sonmis' shirt, "Come on guys!" She shouted, now gaining the attention of everyone at the table.
"Ohmygosh, I'm so sorry Sonmi," Kami started to apologize profusely, "It was a total accident, I'm sorry."
"It's fine." The girl's face was now red with anger, she felt like she could explode, "I'm just gonna go clean up." She took a deep breath and stood up, making her way to the hallway.
Tsukishima couldn't help but feel bad, but he also was still trying his best to ignore her. Though, he impulsively found himself getting up, following behind the girl, not saying a word to everyone else. The boy now walked down the hallway to a house he's never been to, only to see a closed door at the end of the hall. He found himself now walking to the door, thinking if he should knock or not, but before he could make a decision, the door opened, now leaving him face to face with Sonmi.
"Seriously?" The girl scoffed, "What do you want?" She asked, walking past Tsukishima.
Tsukishima turned and grabbed her forearm, causing Sonmi to look back at him, "Can you hold on?" He asked, inching closer to back Sonmi into the wall, "I have been trying my hardest to be nice to you and you're like ignoring me, isn't that what you wanted?"
Sonmi had a face of disgust, "You seriously think you can win me over by telling me I was right once?"
"I just thought," He started, looking down at Sonmi, she had taken her lacy black shirt off and was just standing in her tank top and skirt, "I just thought you'd appericate it, but you're like ignoring me."
"Maybe I am."
"Yeah well," Tsukishima could feel his eyes getting hot, tears nearly forming from his frustration, "You're like ignoring me and making me look all bad by being so nice to everyone," He started to go off.
Sonmi quickly cut him off, "I don't have to do anything to make you look bad, you do that all on your own."
"Stop acting all innocent here, you're like, teasing me or something. You show up looking all pretty and being nice to everyone, and then you go flirting with Asahi right in front of me? How do you think that makes me feel?"
"Oh please, last I checked you said you weren't willing to stop acting like an asshole to me regardless of your feelings for me, so why should I stop talking to the guy you don't like?" Sonmi pierced her lips, she couldn't stop thinking about how Tsukishima thought she was doing this all on purpose when she didn't even realize it. She couldn't help but feel her stomach turning at the thought of Tsukishima overthinking that much about her.
"You're like distracting me on purpose!" Tsukishima deflected the question.
Sonmi could tell she clearly had the advantage on Tsukishima right now, and she was going to use it, "Oh so you're saying I distract you?"
Tsukishima watched as she smirked at him, "How could I not? Look what you're wearing." He spoke, leaning closer to her, basically getting Sonmi to press her body against the wall. Their bodies just inches apart from touching together.
"Look Tsukishima, I'm not trying to distract you nor am I even trying to talk to you, though it's nice to know you think this much about me without me trying. But you said yourself you weren't gonna change for me." Sonmi said with a hint of sadness in her tone.
"You're not even giving me a chance," Tsukishima pleaded, he was never a person to plead, "Just one chance." He stared down into her green eyes, giving her a pleading look.
Sonmi was shocked, least to say, about how adiment Tsukishima was with her, but she couldn't help but feel like he wasn't being sincere, "Why should I give you a chance?"
"Because I want to try, for you." Their faces were nearly millimeters apart, they could both feel their breaths on each other.
"Hey guys-woah," Kami started before she covered her eyes. This caused two now backed away from each other, blushing harder than they ever have before. Kami continued, "They just wanted me to check on you guys and just make sure everything was okay. Which I see was more than okay," Kami chuckled awkwardly before she started to make her way back to the dining room, "Just uh, come back soon."
The pair watched Kami quickly leave, then looked to each other, seeing they both were extremely embarassed.
"So um, are you gonna give me a chance?"
Sonmi could feel her heart in her stomach, she could feel that Tsukishima was being geniue in his feelings this time, "I guess I can give it a try."
