Law: Gratitude
A/N: Mother!Reader.
It was just another day exploring a new island, so why was he getting involved in this? He couldn't help but ask himself what he was doing as the baby kept crying in his arms. A grimace made its way to his face, and he suddenly felt grateful that he had transported himself to an empty alleyway.
He was just going to get new supplies, but while walking along the street, someone had just bumped into him. It was a hooded man who held something in his arms. However, upon colliding with the pirate, whatever he was embracing fell.
As a reflex, Law quickly created a Room and it fell in his arms. The man visibly gritted his teeth, but continued running as Law looked what he had saved. He paled as he realized it was a baby.
"What-" But then he saw why the man didn't bother in getting it back. A group of marines were getting closer, and he growled, now transporting himself to somewhere safe: the alley where he found himself now.
Despite not being used to babies, he was able to think of the good side of the situation: the toddler had surely been kidnapped, so there would be a reward if he got him back.
Nodding his head, he went out of alley, the baby still in his arms, and trying to avoid weird glances in his direction. The question was: how would he find the mother?
"Next time I'll just send Shachi and Penguin." He grumbled, looking down at the baby. Luckily, he was asleep, snuggled into the comfortable sheet in which he was wrapped.
"Captain!" He turned his head to the source of the sound and noticed that his navigator was going in his direction. "What took you so long?" The polar bear asked him, but when his glossy eyes settled on the sleeping baby, his question was answered.
"Have him." Law demanded, handling Bepo the child. The bear took it carefully, and Law sighed. "Where can I find his mother?" He asked himself, pinching the bridge of his nose.
"Ah!" Bepo seemed to react, gaining his captain's attention. "Coming here I found a woman who was looking around. Maybe she was searching for her baby." He said, but gasped suddenly. "I'm sorry..."
"Don't apologize, it's some useful information." Law nodded, patting the bear's shoulder. "Come on, take me to that woman."
It wasn't long until Bepo brought Law to a busy square. This frustrated the man a bit. How was he supposed to know who the mother was?
"Captain! It's her!" The bear called, pointing at a woman who was sitting on a bench, isolated from the rest of the people there. As they came closer, Law realized she had her hands tightly clasped together, her eyes closed.
"Praying won't do any good on you." Law commented smoothly, only to gain the woman's pained stare. He noticed her eyes were red, and she sniffled back snots.
"You can't know how I'm feeling." She retorted sharply, and Law lifted an eyebrow. "You don't know what losing a beloved one feels like." No. Of course he knew the feeling. He kept himself from spatting at her, and only rolled his eyes.
"You shouldn't say things like that to someone who you don't know." He pointed out, motioning at Bepo to come closer. The bear did as told and settled the baby, now awake, on her lap. Her eyes turned wide, and that told Law that she was, indeed, the toddler's mother.
"H-How...?" Her eyes filled with tears as she did not miss a beat in embracing her child, who looked cheerful now that he was reunited with his mother. "Thank you." She sobbed into the soft cloth of the children's sheet as he ran a hand along her tear-stained cheek. "Thank you so much!"
"Don't let anyone kidnap him anymore." Law mumbled, turning around to let them alone, and Bepo followed him, taking the captain's sword. He could go later to get the reward. However, h hated to admit that deep down it felt quite good to have someone's gratitude.
"Wait!" She called getting up from the bench, and both pirates stopped on their tracks. "M-My name is (Y/N), and I would love to pay anything to you after having saved my child. Nothing is more important to me than him, b-but could I ask you a last thing?" Law glared at her over his shoulder, but nodded, curious as to what she would ask.
"Be quick, I don't like wasting time." He said coldly, and she flinched, the baby playing with her (H/C) locks. Decision took over her expression.
"The man who kidnapped my son was his father." She confessed. "I don't know what brought him to do something like that. You are pirates, I know. I beg you to make him pay for this suffering."
"Won't I gain anything more in return?" Her lips pulled into a thin line, as she looked at the child in her arms.
"I would give you as much money as I could, but I still need enough to take care of my son." She said. "I know pirates don't do these things out of kindness, but I'll try to reward you as much as I can!" Law seemed to doubt. The woman didn't seem to be wealthy at all, most like a humble girl, and that meant he wouldn't really get what he deemed enough after fulfilling such quest.
"Captain..." Bepo mumbled, and Law looked at the animal. He knew that his first mate was much more kindhearted than him, and that he really wanted to help (Y/N) out. With a deep breath, he nodded his head.
"Alright." The mother's face lightened as she mouthed an almost shy "thank you". "Bepo." Law called, turning to the bear. "The man bumped into me, so remember the scent." He said, and Bepo did as told, sniffling the captain's hoodie.
"I got it." He announced, and Trafalgar nodded, motioning the bear to lead the way. He spared a last glance at the woman, who just smiled at him. For some reason, he felt weirdly satisfied by looking at that expression...
Bepo took him deep into the forest, but this didn't get Law doubting his mate's snout. He had taken Kikoku, ready to slice the man the moment he came in sight. It was getting darker, he noted. He hoped they could finish this before night came. It would be more difficult if that happened.
They found a house when the forest finished, and the mountains were closer. Bepo shook his head positively and growled.
"The man is in here." Law nodded, and created a Room once again.
"Stay here, I won't take long." With that, he strolled over the house, almost casually, but guard always up.
Surprisingly, the door was open, and there was a strange smell floating in the air; a smell he knew well: blood. As he stepped further into the house, he came into the living room, where he found something unexpected; or maybe rather expected given the dead scent.
The man was lying face-first on the wooden and dirty floor, holes covering his back and a puddle or fresh and dry blood around him. He was obviously dead.
Kneeling down and examining the corpse, Law came to realize that marines had been there. He sighed and cracked his neck in exhaustion. All the walk for nothing...
A knock on the door startled (Y/N) into consciousness, as she went to open. Her son was now asleep again, and she had been reading, although almost dozing off to sleep herself. With lazy steps, she walked into the darkness of the lobby and reached for the doorknob.
The first thing she noticed was the cold that hit the flesh that her sleeping nightgown didn't cover. The next thing was that pair of grey eyes looking down at her. She waited for him to talk, her almost sleepy mind not catching the message that he, most likely, wanted to come in. Then it finally kicked her.
"O-Oh! I'm sorry, get inside, please!" She knew how dangerous it was to let a pirate into her house, but he really sent good vibes to her, despite his cold and stern look. He stepped in and, once she closed the door, followed her towards the living room. "How did it go?" She asked, sitting down.
"He was already dead." He answered plainly, standing still. "The marines caught him before I did, apparently." She looked down in thought, and nodded.
"He made me suffer." She mumbled then, her gaze darting towards the cradle where her son slept soundly. "He made both of us suffer."
"It's over now." He stated, turning around to go. She gasped, reacting a bit late as he was now reaching the corridor.
"I have yet to reward you." He chuckled lowly not turning to look at her.
"I didn't do anything at the end. The man was already dead."
"But you accepted going! A-And saved my son! You already did too much." He then tuned his head to stare at her over his shoulder.
"I don't need anything. Use your money to take care of him." Law said, bringing his eyes to the sleeping boy. "If I ever come back to this island, I want to find him as a happy boy, got it?" She nodded hastily, and smiled slightly.
"Thank you so much, Mr. Trafalgar Law." A smirk made his way onto his lips. He waved at her without saying anything, nor looking back, and left the house. He really didn't want to admit it, but her gratitude truly felt like enough reward to him.
