Rosinante: Finally free

You saw everything. Everything you had always feared became a reality. You desperately blinked back tears as Doflamingo pulled the trigger, shooting Rosinante several times before the younger blond collapsed on the ground. The purity of the white snow was tainted with the crimson liquid that leaked from the beaten body of the man you got to love.

It's been some years since you last saw Rosinante. The moment you were assigned to be under Tsuru-san's commands, leaving him, you realized your feelings towards the male marine. But it was too late. And you would be lying if you said that you never thought about him, because every night an image of him would pop into your mind, of the times you accomplished missions together, the times you would laugh when he fell, burned himself down, and how you would heal him afterwards.

However, one night you stayed up late to make sure there wasn't any enemy in sight. That night... you would remember it always...

· ~Flashback~ ·

It was so calm. The dark clouds passed by like fishes swimming through the navy blue, starred sky. There was anyone close, be it friend of foe, and a pleasant silence inundated the marine ship. You sighed, letting your shoulder slump down as the shotgun dangled from your fingers. It was so boring, yet the constant calm reminded you of his Nagi Nagi no mi.

You missed him... so much.

However, there was a negligible chance that you would see him again, filling the void you had felt since you both pulled apart. But that didn't mean that you couldn't daydream from time to time, when you weren't doing anything important. When you were about to fall asleep, you would fantasize as how he will confess his love to you when you meet again... some day.

Your thoughts were interrupted when your best friend, (F/N), came running towards you. You met her when you first came here. She was so kind and understanding that you became friends almost immediately. You would always stand by her side, and knew she would stand by yours as well.

"(Y/N)!" She halted in front of you, and looked down at her right hand. "We found this message onshore. It has your MC (marine code)." With an arched eyebrow, you took the message from her hands and curiously examined it. Your breath hitched as your hands slightly clutched the piece of paper.

"MC... 01746..." And your eyes widened, not quite believing this. "Rosinante..." (F/N) barely heard your whisper, and looked worried at you. She flinched, however, when you snapped your head towards her. "Have you read this?" You asked, and were glad that it sounded soft. You knew (F/N) was kinda sensitive. You yourself were sometimes too, that was another common trait.

"No." She said firmly. "You know I would never pry over something personal." She stated with a gentle smile, which you returned, before wearing a straight expression. She understood this as a 'Please, leave me alone' and, saluting, turned around and disappeared into the darkness, leaving you all to yourself once again.

Your eyes softened while you stumbled backwards until your back met one of the wooden walls of the ship, and let yourself slip down into a sitting position. A nostalgic smile played on your lips as you finally decided to read the content, feeling slightly happier than you had in a while.

'(Y/N)? I hope this letter arrived safe and sound to your division. And I hope you haven't forgotten me. Seeing how you have the worst memory all around the seas.' You playfully rolled your eyes. He would always remind you that time when you forgot to bring Sengoku-san his tea, although he had told you to five times that day. You continued reading. 'Anyway, I want you to know that I haven't. I really miss your company so much. Right now I barely see anyone from the Navy. You know, I'm infiltrated within my old brother's pirate crew, the Donquixote Family. I want to take his merciless persona down.' Your eyes widened. He had never told you that he was related in any way to Donquixote Doflamingo. 'Right now, I have a plan, but I doubt I will put it in action right now. Maybe in two years. I... sent you this message, because I'm wavering slightly. My brother is much stronger than me, that's for sure. If my plans go wrong, I won't probably make it out alive.' You felt your heart clutch, and some tears mustered at the corners of your eyes. It couldn't be, he was strong. He couldn't die. 'So, I need to tell you something... I-' What he wanted to tell you, you wouldn't know. Unfortunately, the message had somehow been in contact with water, and the last part of the paper was soaked, making the ink a blurry mess.

"Rosinante..." You whispered again, now feeling the tears moisten your soft cheeks, which gradually took a rosy color that extended all around the face, as you cried harder. That was the last line of communication you shared with him.

· ~Flashback end~ ·

And now, two years later, Tsuru-san has decided to go to Swallow Island to finally capture Doflamingo, since Rosinante told her that he would be there to take the Ope Ope no mi during its exchange between Diez Barrels and the Marines.

The thought of seeing your former partner and crush once again, after so long made your heart skip a beat, and you almost couldn't hide your happiness. If you were too see him, you would help him out. You wouldn't let him die. You had never let that happen. Whenever he was about to lose his life because of his clumsiness during a mission, you would save his ass and, later on, laugh about it.

But this time it seemed to be different. Due to the discovery of Diez Barrels' actual hideout at Minion Island, Tsuru-san sent some Marines to explore the place without being noticed. You where one of them, fortunately, along with (F/N).

So now you were at Minion Island, watching Doflamingo's movements, while anticipating a likely encounter with the male marine.

You were hiding, your best friend by your side, waiting for the correct moment to strike. But suddenly, something entered your view. A small kid, probably starting his teenager years, appeared running along the shore, presumably heading towards a man who looked like a marine. What if this has something to do with the exchange? You thought to yourself and, carefully, stood up while seeing the child and the huge man walking away.

"(Y/N)...! (Y/N), where are you going?!"(F/N) whispered hurriedly and motioned you to sit back. You looked at her over your shoulder and, with a decisive nod, ran towards where those two had disappeared, ignoring your friend's and partner's complains.

You managed to follow them from afar, until they finally stopped and the kid called a name happily.

"Cora-san!" He chimed. "You're going to be saved!" What they had in front of them gave you several emotions. He was there. Rosinante was there, he really was. But... he was covered in blood, lying on the soft and cold snow. You felt s wave of worry wash over your being, but immediately felt good because this marine was going to help him. But, suddenly, an argue started. The marine guy seemed angered, made fear pool at your stomach. But what frightened you the most was the moment when this guy, who Rosinante had addressed as Vergo, kicked the young marine on the face, breaking the stone wall against which he had managed to rest in a sitting position the moment he realized the huge marine's identity.

You wanted to scream, but seemingly, the boy beat you to it. You tried to move your legs, but they wouldn't respond. Why were you paralyzed?! You needed to interfere! The boy had started to punch Vergo, in vain, he wasn't strong enough. Vergo threw him away, and Rosinante tried to defend him, but got beaten by the man, who took his own clothes off, despite the extremely low temperature, and covered his body in armament haki. You had never met nobody who achieved such a feat.

It truly broke you to see your love being hit so brutally, and how the boy was begging him to stop. And you couldn't do anything. Even if your legs managed to answer what your brain was so desperately ordering them to do, you knew it would reveal that your division was at this island, and it would screw the plan. Yet it didn't lessen the useless feeling that washed over you.

When Vergo finished with Rosinante, he stood up, and terrifically stalked towards the kid, stepping on the pale, limp hand that belonged to the younger marine. Then, you proceeded to see how Vergo beat the poor kid as well, with equal cruelty, not feeling the less merciful for the kid. The thought of closing your eyes had swum across your mind more than once, but your eyelids wouldn't comply either.

Finally, he finished such a barbarity, and moments later, his Den Den Mushi sounded in the sepulchral silence that had built up due to the two beaten frames being almost lifeless. As Vergo was answering the call, you saw Rosinante painstakingly getting up, taking then the bloody body of the kid in his arms before using his ability to run away.

You finally found movement available and followed them again, managing to go unnoticed by the brutal man.

They arrived at a place full of treasures that had been stacked by Doflamingo's subordinates. You saw how Rosinante put the kid inside a chest and, before tapping his head, presumably creating a soundless wall for him, and telling him something that, certainly startled him. You couldn't hear them, given the distance you were at, but surely, the face your partner wore was priceless. It reminded you of how stupid he used to be, and probably still is.

Things happened, then, too fast. Rosinante called some pirate's attention, and they beat him again. Then, Doflamingo appeared. After some moments, the younger blond took out a gun and aimed it at his brother. Doflamingo did the same. You felt a lump build up in your throat, firstly because you weren't able to move again. Why? Why couldn't you help him? It was obvious that he needed help. But you wouldn't manage to go. What a failure of marine... You thought as you felt your pride being stabbed, but that didn't matter right then.

The sound of shots brought you back, and your eyes widened upon seeing that Rosinante wasn't the one who pulled the trigger. His body arched against the chest where he had hid the child, and more blood covered his already messy clothes and body. Definitely, as much as you tried, tears wouldn't keep from falling. And they did, soaking your cheeks in their wake as silent sobs fell from your lips, luckily on deaf ears.

You saw how Doflamingo started to walk away, as his subordinates took the treasures with them, the chest included. You saw it open slightly, and the eyes of the boy, teary and empty of any emotion, reached your own (E/C) orbs.

Some minutes later, you were still frozen on the spot, and everyone was gone by now. Snapping out of your trance, you made haste and stood up, clumsily stumbling towards Rosinante's dying body. Towering over him, you proceeded to look over his injuries... but it was too late. It was impossible that those shots missed some of his vital organs, besides, he was already severely wounded before.

As you gasped for air, trying to convince yourself that this was a nightmare, you noticed a gradually colder hand sliding onto your on. Your head turned to that direction, and saw his pale hand squeeze the back of yours with little strength, the few he had left.

"(Y-Y/N)..." He barely whispered. You looked at him, and saw who your own tears fell on his cheeks. "It's been... so long...." He halted in order to let out heart-breaking coughs, spitting blood to the side.

"Rosinante... please... don't leave me..." You whispered brokenly, voice shaky and unsure. "I can't live without you." Your eyes lit up, but not enough to replace the darkness that had taken over them. "I promise I won't ever tease you for being so clumsy... Or slap you when you let out a witty remark that managed to shut me up. And... I-"

"You haven't... done that for a while... anyway." He breathed slowly, a gentle smile playing on his lips. "But I missed it. Even your flaws are perfect for me, (Y/N)." You let out a sob, and bit the inside of your cheek so hard it managed to bring a metallic flavor to your mouth.

"Please... please, I'm nothing without you. These years have been terrible, not having you by my side. But thinking that perhaps I could see you again..." You trailed off, thinking that maybe your voice would give up, making you break in uncontrollable sobs and cries.

"(Y/N)..." He whispered, and attempted to lift his hand, just to have it fall limp on the snow. "Don't be sad... I know... it's a bit selfish of my to ask, but could you do something for me?" You nodded frantically, taking his hand to your cheek, thinking that maybe it was what he wanted. It certainly was, seeing how his smile brightened ever so slightly. "Please... take care of... Law." You let a confused sound, but almost came out as a sob. Then you realized, the little boy he tried to protect so hard.

"...I... will, Rosinante." You said, not wanting to turn down his last ask. He then wore a close-eyed smile, which made your heart clench painfully. Even being in the state he is, he still is the same dork... You thought.

"That's good..." He said, as his eyelids slowly closed. "(Y/N)... I love you... so much." With that, you felt his hand slip off your own and fall onto the snow once again as his labored breathing stopped. You gasped, eyes going wide. Reacting quite immediately, you hastily pressed your ear to his chest hoping -begging- to find a pulse.

Nothing.

Your lips quivered as your head slowly pulled apart from his chest, and more sobs left your dry lips. You stood up, trying to wipe the tears away with your forearm, but to no avail. Sniffling softly, you looked down at the dead body of your love. You didn't even get the chance to reply his confession.

Breathing deeply several times, you took a step forward, then another, determinedly walking away from Rosinantes corpse, not wanting to witness how the snowflakes slowly covered his body. You saw, however, that his face wore that expression you got to love. A smile, a gentle, heart-melting smile on those painted lips.

Hours later, you arrived at your division. The first person who came to greet you was Tsuru-san, accompanied by (F/N). Your friend immediately ran to you and hugged your frame, while the old woman looked at you with a disapproving look.

"You shouldn't have ran away like that, (Y/N). Please, go back to your room and I will think of a proper punish-"

"Wait!" You said almost without thinking, and Tsuru-san closed her mouth, frown still present. You lowered your head, realizing the bluntness in your tone. "I mean... please, let me stay here, for a while." She arched an eyebrow, while your friend gasped at your sudden request.

"May I know the reason for such ask?" She questioned, although it still sounded like an order. You bit your lip and looked at your side.

"Rosinante... he's dead." You said, trying not to let your voice quiver. "And he asked me to... look after the boy who, apparently, ate the Ope Ope no Mi." You stated, feeling proud of yourself for stiffing at the last line, as if to seem decided. Tsuru-san looked hesitant, but finally nodded, giving you permission to temporally leave the division.

"But... (Y/N)..." Whined your friend and hugged you once again. You smiled and patted her head before stepping back, saluting, and running away.

Where is he? You asked yourself as you looked around the quiet, snowy streets. Its been hours since you started looking for that kid, and sun was about to rise.

You then heard a muffled noise, and snapped your head to that direction. It came from an alleyway to your left, so you ran towards there, hoping to find that boy. Fortunately, it was him.

He was curled up in a ball, almost looked like he wanted the snow to engulf him, provoking a slow death. He was sobbing badly, and his voice sounded almost hoarse with all the crying. Indecisive, you walked towards him, but the boy didn't notice you. Not until you knelt down in front of him, making his crying stop and a glare to form on his gray eyes.

"Go away. I don't need... help." His voice trembled a bit at the end and a sniff left his nose in an attempt of stopping snots coming out. You bit your cheek and, carefully, neared your hand to his head. He reacted and shot up, his glare intensifying. "I told you to fuck off! Dammit, go away, woman, I-"

"I'm a friend of 'Cora-san'." Probably this boy didn't know of Rosinante's real name, so you decided to use the one the boy seemed to call him by. It certainly shut him up, as his eyes widened, before a skeptical expression took over his face once again.

"Really? You have no proofs." He said crossing his arms over his chest. You sighed, and slipped a hand into your long, (color) coat, looking for something. After some seconds, you retracted your hand with a picture on it. He hesitantly neared to you and looked at the piece of paper. There, Rosinante was doing some strange pose while you looked at him with a sweet smile. He let out a shaky breath and, without warning, started crying. Carefully, you wrapped your arms around his smaller, trembling body and brought it to yours, as he cried on your chest.

"He asked me to take care of you... Law." You mumbled softly while patting his back, wordlessly comforting him. After a while, he pulled apart and looked at you with those teary eyes.

"You're a marine too?" He said, but it came out as a question instead. You smiled and nodded. He tried to scowl, but in vain, his face wouldn't change its sad frown. "I hate everything related to the Government." He finally said,

"You didn't hate him." You chuckled and lifted him up, despite his protests and hiccups. "Okay... there should be a hotel around here..." Walking ahead, you started to search for a place to stay, while Law had finally calmed down in your arms.

Not long after, you found an inn, and payed for a week stay. Fortunately, this place seemed to have heating and private bathroom, although you almost spent all your money.

Once in your room, you put Law on the bed while he looked around. Then a sniff made you look at him, and smile a bit. Kneeling down in front of the bed, you cupped his cheek softly.

"It's okay, I'm really sad too." You admitted lowly. He looked at you with confusion and you frowned. "I... really loved Cora-san." You confessed with a blush. Law stayed silent, before looking down. Sighing, you got up and stretched, seeing that he wasn't going to speak anymore. "Well, I'm going to take a shower. If you need something, knock, okay?"

"You too... cherished him?" He asked carefully. You let out a confused sound before nodding. Seeing how his little hands turned into fist, you frowned. "Then, I swear I will kill Doflamingo someday." He spat through gritted teeth. Your frown then turned into a smile and you walked towards the bathroom.

"Would you really do that for me too, Law?" You asked before entering the smaller room, feeling how the bathtub was practically inviting you. Law looked at the now closed door and kept thoughtful, but his mind seemed to slowly turn off as his eyelids closed and his back met the soft mattress.

The sight you met when you got out of the steaming bathroom was just cute. Law had dozed off, mouth wide open letting out soft snores as a trail of drool ran all the way to his chin. You smiled to yourself and started towards the bed, took him in your arms, and put his body in a more comfortable position, covering it with the sheets. Then, you got into bed yourself, looking at his sleeping face, and pulled him close.

I'm sure you will succeed, Law. You thought before falling asleep.

It's been thirteen years now. You had read two shocking news that morning. Firstly, Law had made an alliance with Straw Hat Luffy. Ad secondly, Doflamingo abandoned his status as a Shichibukai.

You were seeing how Law progressed, feeling utterly proud of him. And you were sure that Rosinante felt the same from wherever he is right now. You started to notice it the moment Law became a Royal Shichibukai himself, actually knowing what his plan was.

Later on, the entire world was showered with the news of Doflamingo's defeat. The moment you read that report, tears had gathered at your eyes. Finally, the day had arrived. The day that Rosinante's death would be avenged.

"You did it, Law". You muttered to yourself with a quivering voice, hugging the newspaper to your chest. "I knew you would achieve it. Now you're truly free, just how Rosinante wanted..." There was a knock on your door, and you jumped a bit. Wiping some tears away, you muttered a come in.

"(Y/N)!" (F/N) barged into the room with a happy smile on her face. "I guess you read the news?" You nodded, the same smile on your own face. She hugged you tightly, and you almost choked on your breath.

"(F-F/N), you're... asphyxiating me." She pulled back and muttered a little "Sorry", making you sigh. "God, when are you going to mature?" She smiled sheepishly before snapping her fingers.

"Oh! I almost forgot. Tsuru-san and Sengoku-san said that we would be going to Dressrosa. You know what I'm saying... right?" You nodded, and she snickered a bit. "Promise me you won't kick his ass... again." You rolled your eyes playfully, slightly jabbing her arm.

"Hey, I did that because he stole the last (favorite snack)." You whined. But, definitely, you were going to pay a little visit to Law. He needed to know just how proud you both were of him and his efforts...
