Chapter Five
OPHELIA hunched over her computer, blocking the screen's view from prying eyes. It had been days since the incident on Tunstall Bay and life seemed to regress to its normal state. Ophelia hadn't used computers often and was confused on how to even get to a search engine. Thankfully she randomly clicked on a button and it led her to Google. Though it was impossible that anything would show up after searching the name Carlisle Cullen she still held some hope. Ophelia felt as if the screen was screaming to everyone else in the computer lab that she was doing something wrong and suspicious. She glanced around her every few seconds. Her goal was to not arouse suspicion and she was eliciting the opposite response.
"Hey Ophelia, whatcha working on? Carlisle Cullen." William squinted his eyes at the screen and shoved another handful of Doritos into his mouth. "Who's that?" Ophelia was ready to roll her eyes but stopped herself.
"Oh, nothing. Just a character from some book I read. I can't seem to recall how to spell his name though. Maybe that's why nothing popping up." Ophelia scratched her forehead and glanced around William's body which was blocking her view of the library.
"Maybe." William drew out his words and prompted a dramatic pause. "So are you ready for Saturday?" William asked in an excited manner.
Ophelia was puzzled. What was so special about Saturday? Besides that it followed Friday, not many holidays landed on that particular day. "Umm. Sure?"
"How could you forget!" William teased her and widened his eyes and mouth in shock. "Second Beach remember? With my friends."
"Of course! How could I possibly forget." Ophelia muttered with a slight hint of sarcasm. "Who are your friends exactly?"
"Oh, you know. Zach, Elvira, Elisabeth, Eleanor, and Nathan."
"The triplets are coming?"
"Yeah, the other two just got back from Italy." William leaned in close to whisper in Ophelia's ear. "If you ask me those two have been acting pretty strange since they've gotten back. They look even creepier than they used to." William took a step back and raised an eyebrow. "Sounds fishy to me. So anyway are you coming?"
"If I can get a ride there. I can't exactly drive considering I'm too young." More like three hundred and thirty-seven years too old, Ophelia thought and smiled at her own joke.
"Right. I always forget you're a year younger than me."
"Yep." Ophelia could sense the conversation had died and logged out of the desktop computer in front of her. "Well see you later."
"Wait, Ophelia!" William jogged to catch up to her. "I can take you if you want. My car isn't the best but it runs. I'll pick you up at the ferry? Seven in the morning?"
"Sure that would be fantastic. Thank you so much, William." Ophelia glanced back at the brunette boy and smiled warmly. She reached out towards him for a hug and was stuck awkwardly holding his side as she accidentally crushed the Doritos bag in his hand.
Ophelia and William both parted ways to their first class. William mulled over the possibilities of what meaning the name Carlisle Cullen could hold. It definitely meant something to Ophelia. He had to let Nathan know. He would want to know about it. Especially if Ophelia seemed so nervous about William not seeing the name. Nathan needs to know. Nathan needs to know. Carlisle Cullen. Carlisle Cullen. William's mind passed the thought around until he could share the information. In some corner of his mind, William was very frightened. He didn't know what led to this obsession. But that part was quickly shut away and quieted down. He was soon soothed by the thoughts again and he willingly let them come. He needed to help Nathan to feel calm, to feel safe.

The drive to Lynn Canyon was peaceful for both William and Ophelia. Though they hadn't talked much to each other they enjoyed each other's company and the pop station William had turned the radio to. The group decided to switch locations to Lynn Canyon because there were not many cliff diving opportunities at Second Beach. To say Ophelia was excited was an understatement. She finally got to do something a little dangerous that didn't raise suspicion from the humans around her. Though the drive was long, she didn't mind. She looked out the window the entire drive and admired the beauty of her surroundings.
William turned into a parking spot and shut his car off. The engine stopped with a groan and Ophelia opened her squeaky passenger door. It was a perfect day. The dark and gloomy clouds that had hung overhead just recently had vanished. The rays of the sun were shining bright and all of the sun was visible. Ophelia sighed when she stepped out of the car into the warmth and spread her arms out wide. Her skin had become pasty during her years in Canada. She missed the sun more than she thought she would have and a warm day like this in September was unnatural.
William grabbed the bags from his trunk and peeked at his phone. Ophelia couldn't help but chuckle at the sight of him. He was putting sunscreen on his nose and had bright tropical swim trunks on. She cringed at the sight of his knee-length socks and flip-flops.
"Are you sure you don't want any sunscreen? I've got plenty and you don't want to get skin cancer, do you?" William said as he patted some onto his shoulders.
"No thank you. I'm actually allergic to sunscreen." Ophelia placed some sunglasses on the bridge of her nose.
"It seems like you're allergic to the sun too," William commented about her pale complexion.
"Hey!" William let out a laugh.
"They should be here soon. I texted them where we parked."
"Over there, I see them." Ophelia pointed to the triplets who were walking in sync together, more like sauntering, with two boys who seemed awkward in comparison with them.
As they approached, William introduced her to his two friends Zach and Nathan. Zach was short, his back hunched forward, and he stood behind Nathan and the triplets as if he was afraid of everyone else. Nathan was blonde and had a tall and sophisticated stature. The skin under his eyes was a dark purple hue. Ophelia recalled seeing a boy like Nathan before but her memory became fuzzy at the thought.
"You look familiar." Ophelia's forehead crinkled in concentration as she looked at the boy's eyes. There was something that seemed... off about them. He smelled sweet, suspiciously so.
"Oh well, I've bet we might've seen each other in passing. In the halls." Nathan spoke softly and hung on to every word.
"Yeah, probably." Ophelia wasn't convinced.
The group hiked towards the wooden bridge that led them to the highest point of Lynn Canyon. Zach insisted that they all should start at the highest jump or else they would be 'wussies'. It was about a hundred feet from the water and Ophelia was ecstatic. Ophelia didn't like the fact that the water would be freezing cold. Once they were at the top, Zach jumped in right away and even flipped a couple of times on the way down.
Elisabeth rolled her eyes. "Show off."
Elisabeth went next and executed a perfect dive into the water and Eleanor did too after her sister had gone. Elvira soon followed and it was just William and Ophelia at the top. Ophelia looked down to the water below her and it certainly looked like a higher distance to her now that she was actually up there. She gulped and just leapt off, trying not to think about it too much. William was last and he tried to splash everyone else when he went down. Ophelia rolled her eyes at him. Everyone meet back together in a shallower part of the water.
"How are you not cold? It's freezing!" William directed his question to Nathan.
He was unbothered by the temperature, while everyone else stood shivering in the natural pool. He just shrugged off the question and said something about being part reptile.
"Well I'm going up again and as Zach would say 'there's nothing you wussies can do about it'" Ophelia said.
Ophelia hopped out of the water and scratched herself slightly on the rocks and Nathan's head immediately whipped in her direction. His eyes turned black and his gaze never faltered. Ophelia's heart raced at his expression but her cut healed within seconds and when the water washed the blood away Nathan relaxed. She didn't know what to think of what had just happened.
"Weirdo," Ophelia muttered to herself.
No one else decided to follow her, they all thought being out of the water would be even colder than being in it. But they were missing out on the warmth that Ophelia was experiencing. Once Ophelia arrived at the spot she jumped off earlier she shook the fear off of her hands. A stretch of dirt was in front of her to make a running start on. Ophelia jumped and soon felt her stomach drop and the wind rushed against her. She felt free and she wished that her limited powers granted her the ability to fly. She loved the feeling. Ophelia shivered once again as her body hit the frigid waters. When she landed, her ankle cracked into such an awkward angle and blood swarmed around her. Ophelia didn't want to cry but the pain was too much. She didn't cry nearly as loud as she wanted to but she let hot tears race down her cheeks. Everyone had noticed her accident which made her unable to heal when she wanted to. So she had to experience the pain as a normal human would as everyone gawked at her and didn't even lift a finger to help.
Ophelia swam towards her friends for help. Her friends immediately swam towards her and Nathan was the last to reach her. He was reacting to her the way he had before with her cut but it was ten times worse. His hands clenched into fists and his whole body became rigid. William was the one to help her out of the water. His face became livid once he finally saw the extent of Ophelia's injuries and as a normal teenaged boy would do he cursed as a coping mechanism.
"Shit. Shit! We should've gone up with you Ophelia."
"I'm sorry," Ophelia whispered as more tears stained her face.
"It's not your fault. But we have to get to a hospital or something. I don't know." William looked to his friends for advice but they just stared blankly at him. "Do you know where a hospital is guys?"
"I know Lions Gate is kinda close to here," Eleanor said.
"Okay. Here, someone help me." William motioned towards Ophelia who he was currently supporting.
Zach walked over to the two and helped William pick her up. They both rushed her to William's car but it took a while on the uneven terrain. Ophelia was trying to force the healing process away, as if that were possible, the whole time and hoped no one would notice her inhuman abilities. Usually something like this would heal within minutes and maybe even seconds if she was still in the water and actively trying to heal herself. Ophelia could feel her bones slowly moving back into place and it was excruciating. Even though Ophelia could heal quickly, it still hurt like hell and maybe even worse when she was injured like this.
Soon the group was at the car and Zach and William slipped her into William's car but not before wrapping her foot up in a towel. Elvira got into the back seat of the car, saying she wanted to support her best friend. Everyone else rushed to their own cars and promised to meet Ophelia at the hospital. Minutes felt like hours as the three drove in silence to the hospital. Every once and a while Elvira would squeeze Ophelia's shoulder to support her. William glanced at her every few seconds and looked as if he was going to vomit soon.
All of their group arrived together at the hospital and sat in the waiting room. The sterile smell of the hospital stung Ophelia's nose and she wanted to get out of there as quickly as possible. Ophelia was soon called upon to go to the back room where she assumed the E.R. was. They asked some questions and had her fill out a form before giving her a room. It surprised that she was admitted without her sister and without even knowing some of her own basic information since it changed a lot.
Ophelia was finally given her own room which was more curtain than walls. Her friends had to stay out in the waiting room and: wait. A nurse named Cecelia came in to ask even more questions and look at her swollen ankle. Ophelia thanked God that she hadn't healed as much and that it wasn't too noticeable.
"So, how did this happen?" The nurse said. She was dressed in a calming blue shade of scrubs and plastered on a smile that appeared to be genuine.
"Well..." Ophelia was ashamed and her cheeks were on fire. "My friends and I were at Lynn Canyon and
"Ah, I see. This happens more than you think. Did you learn your lesson about jumping off of cliffs? If your friends jump off a cliff what do you do?" Cecelia prompted Ophelia to respond.
"I will not do it again with my friends." More like around prying eyes, Ophelia thought.
"Well, the docs gonna come in soon so you have some time to get nice and comfy." Cecelia patted her knee before she left and gave her one more right smile.
Ophelia watched the weather channel as she waited for her doctor. She didn't know what she was going to say because she could feel that her foot was almost done healing. She smelt a similar smell to Nathan's sweet scent and heard footsteps headed towards her room. The curtains swung open and a tall blonde man was in front of her. His golden eyes contrasted against the purple hue of the skin under his eyes and he looked extremely pale. Goosebumps covered Ophelia's body and every instinct inside of her screamed at her to run, just like how she felt around Nathan. However, she did not run in fact she stared right into his face and knew exactly who he was. She knew this man would not harm her or at least she hoped her assumptions of him were correct. Her heart raced but not out of fear. She worried her hopes would be crushed by the prospect of finally knowing about her past.
"Hello, Miss Castellanos I'm-"
Ophelia interrupted him "Carlisle Cullen."
