11- dark roads and mouth fights
That night, when Malachi got to campus, he took a detour and headed towards Simi's hostel. Hearing that the Dean had called the doctor before the autopsy report was released had formed a theory in his head. Maybe Simi could convince him he wasn't being paranoid.
The road to Simi's hostel was dark sometimes. According to the Dean, it was the job of the hostel managers to provide the bulbs for the street lamps for half a year. There had always been a battle of sorts between the two parties on maintenance of hostels and roads off campus. And currently, the street lamps were very dim.
He'd just taken a bend that would take him to the back gate of Simi's hostel when he saw a familiar face with his tongue stuck down the throat of a girl.
Malachi averted his eyes and pretended he hadn't seen them. He walked past but didn't see the stone on the side of the road, his left foot hit and Malachi clamped his mouth shut but the pain was too much.
"Damn it," he shouted and kneeled to check if he was bleeding.
"Kai?" the familiar person was now behind him.
"Hey Mohammed," He got up and tried to act nonchalant.
"Oh, it's really you. I thought. Well I hoped it was someone else-," Mohammed was fidgeting and Malachi could guess why.
The girl he had been kissing was not his girlfriend and shouldn't be because Mohammed was the head of a religious group on campus that wouldn't appreciate him kissing girls on dark roadsides.
"Chill Mo. I didn't see anything. Don't worry man." Malachi patted his friend on the shoulder and watched as he let out a huge sigh of relief.
"Thanks man."
"But better take your mouth fighting somewhere else." Malachi chuckled, looking at the girl.
She was pretty with long dark hair and a shy smile. He waved at her and she waved back to him.
"We got carried away. How have you been?" Mo asked him, concern etched on his face.
"Just like always; okay." the smile on Malachi's face disappeared.
"I've wanted to talk to you after what happened to El but I was afraid you'd punch the teeth out of my mouth."
"I would have, because you're always having a damn smile on your face." Malachi smiled and punched his shoulder.
"Better come to practice soon bro."
Mohammed give his trademark smile one more time and left to his girl.
When Malachi reached Simi's room, the door was slightly ajar and he could hear shouting in the room. He rushed into the room, thinking Simi was in danger only to see her having an argument with her roommate.
"Hey!" he raised his voice and both girls whipped their heads toward him and became mute when they realized they weren't alone.
"I thought you were in trouble." Malachi directed his gaze at Simi.
"Well she is," Simi's roommate rushed past him, bumping into his side hard and closing the door behind her with a big bang.
Simi sat down on her bed, and screamed into her hands while Malachi stood there, not knowing what to say. Finally, he managed, "Are you okay?"
"Yeah I am. Sit down Kai. What's up?" Simi asked and pointed to her study desk to Malachi.
He turned the chair at the study desk to face Simi and sat down. Running a hand through his bushy hair, he smiled sheepishly.
"I was thinking we could go through the photobook."
"Alright. Sure."
Simi got up and rummaged through her wardrobe and finally brought out the photobook. Her mannerisms clearly showed she wasn't okay.
"Are you sure you're okay Si?" Malachi asked one more time.
"Later I'll tell you about it." She put on a smile that was as convincing as a lion trying to convince a deer that it wouldn't eat it.
She threw the photobook to Malachi, who caught it with a chuckle and placed it on the study desk. Then with her arm leaning on Malachi, they went through the photobook.
An hour later, Simi wished Malachi had never found the photobook. She didn't know exactly what Elder had been doing but whatever it was, it was crazy dangerous.
They had seen four photos of other students they knew. Students who had turned up dead. Two of them had been in an accident, the other had fainted in the middle of an exam and the last person, had killed himself.
"What did Elder get himself into?" Malachi whispered.
In all the photos, each student was talking to a dark haired girl whose back faced the photo. There was something familiar about the girl and Malachi wished he could figure it out. He felt as if he knew the girl.
"Do you think the girl had something to do with their deaths?" Simi asked him.
"Very likely. She was dealing them Chill maybe?"
"And what about the other photos?" Simi asked.
The other photos depicted various acts of the university staff and students. There was one of a female lecturer with a burner phone plastered to ear behind one of the university buildings. Another one of their SRC president in a very compromising situation with a girl who appeared drunk.
Perhaps the most shocking was the photo was one of the male lecturers who had a wife and a family, in bed with a classmate of theirs. Who was also a guy.
And not surprising too, they saw a few photos of Teaching Assistants handing out marking schemes of exams to some girls.
Malachi passed his hand over his face and hit the desk. He had been very sure that the Dean and Dr. James had been behind Elder's death but now he was completely confused.
And they hadn't even looked over all the photos in the photobook.
"What on earth did El get himself into." Simi whispered.
