4. We're friendly strangers
(Mavis Pov)
I was defiantly more prepared for day 2. I knew the time to catch the bus and would not be late getting out of the house today.
"Bye dad! Bye mom!" I yelled out to them while exiting my house. Here we go. Another day at fairy tail high. Is it bad, I'm actually excited? Things are just going a lot better than I ever expected. That feeling will probably fade as soon as I start getting more work to do. That's how it always goes.
As I waited at the bus stop I started humming some of my favourite songs. Was it only me here? I guess so. I don't mind being alone though. Gives me time to think and question things. I like trying to see through things and find their proper meaning. It sort of entertains me.
The bus soon came in sight and gently stopped beside me. I climbed aboard and looked around at the seats. I saw Levy sitting with two boys I never seen before, Juvia with Gray who she was talking earnestly to, and a bunch of other people. Hmm, where to sit? In the back I spotted a tuffet of black hair, sitting alone. I wonder... I started to make my way towards the seat and sure enough, it was Zeref.
"Hello!" I gave him a smile as I sat beside him. He just stared.
"I thought I told you to leave me alone." He said, turning to face to window. Huh? Does my face look bad or something?
"Oh, well I told you that I don't ignore people. So I guess we both didn't listen." I remarked. He made an annoyed tsk sound. I guess he doesn't quite enjoy my presence. Does he?
"Listen Mavis, I'm actually trying to help you here."
"Then stop." I told him, rather bluntly.
"Excuse me?"
"Stop trying to help me. I don't need any." I gave my response. He looks slightly befuddled at me. I guess I do have a habit of speaking my mind.
"You know, sometimes it's good to take people's advice." He frowned.
"I know, but I prefer to rely on my own instincts. So that way, even if I'm wrong, at least the choice was mine." Once again, befuddlement. Come on Zeref, you got to keep up.
"Mavis, you are the most annoyingly persistent person I know." He sighed, not bothering to face me. I gave a light giggle. I'm going to take that as a compliment.
"So, can we just clear all things up and be friends?" I asked. He didn't reply until later.
"I don't make friends."
"Fine, then we're close acquaintances. Deal?" I chose another route. He still seemed displeased.
"Don't push it Mavis. We can be strangers." He told me, not wanting any excuses. I pouted.
"Friendly strangers?"
"Fine." They gave in somewhat. I grinned. Good, now we're friendly strangers. Hurray for progress!
"So, let's learn some more about each other. What's your favourite colour?" I asked, starring directly at him.
"Black." He said not putting any effort in his response. I didn't mind though, at least he gave one.
"Why?"
"What do you mean why? I just like the colour." He spoke flatly.
"I mean, sometimes people have connections as to why they like the colour. For example, I like-"
"Pink?" He guessed, eyeing my dress. I gave a smirk.
"Nope. Green. Because it's a natural colour, and it reminds of where I use to live." I told him truthfully.
"Oh." Is all he said, as the bus parked safely at the school. I could see everyone meeting up with their groups and chatting joyfully.
I started getting up out of my seat, sliding into the empty space left in the aisle.
"See you around Zeref!" I waved to him. He just turned away looking out the window again. Hmmm he's so stubborn.
As I got off the bus I joined up with Lucy, Levy, Juvia, and Erza. Levy and Juvia stared at me strangely.
"What is it?" I asked.
"Why did you sit with Zeref?" Juvia asked. I tilted my head.
"He looked lonely." I admitted. They all didn't seem to happy with me.
"I know we seem like jerks at the moment, but trust us, we're just trying to keep you safe." Levy said, concern in her eyes. My curiosity began to boil over. What is it that makes Zeref such a bad person? I must find out. Sooner or later. Hopefully, sooner.
