You kept your eyes on the back hallway the entire day, hoping that your parents or other co-workers didn't make their way to speak with the police officers. Neither of the two made their way out of the bedroom for breakfast so you assumed they were still sleeping somehow.
Your mind was occupied with how so many men were able to sleep comfortably in the small room. However from what you remembered when you gave the tall officer the medicine, it didn't seem like there were so many people in the room. You assumed they left to give their sick friend space.
It was around lunch time when the tall officer came out to the lobby. A younger sister of yours was doing some reading at the front desk when he walked up to her. You were in the back room looking over some documents, when you heard his voice asking for some sheets.
"I'll bring them to you." Your sister smiled at him politely.
She had walked into the room you were in, going to the storage area when you stopped her in the doorway.
"I got this. Don't worry about it." You told her quickly, taking the sheets from her hands.
"I got it." She furrowed her eyebrows, holding tightly to the fabric.
"No. No." You shook your head. "Really I got it. You go over the profits."
She frowned further, squinting her eyes at you. You gave a smile, hoping she would not ask further questions. Though knowing your siblings, she was bound to later on. With a bright smile, you turned on your heel and skipped out the backroom. It only made her more suspicious.
It was the shorter officer who had opened the door up for you. He had only shoved his head out but seeing that it was only you and no one else he allowed you room to walk in. Your eyes quickly went over to the man who seemed to be breathing normally as he rested.
"I haven't gone to the pharmacy to get some cleaning solution and better bandages. But I should be able to soon." You told the two.
"I'll go with you." The one who opened the door spoke up. "Hongjoong told me to stock up on medicine for Mingi anyways."
You nodded your head stiffly, taking a seat on the chair you had been in last night. You moved to wipe away some of the hair that stuck to the man's forehead, pursing your lips when you noticed how clammy his skin was.
"You need to take him a bath. At least with a cloth so things don't get worse."
"I'm not taking him a bath." Yunho scolded, turning to look at his partner.
"I'm not either!" Jongho exclaimed.
"I'll do it!" You rolled your eyes, crossing your arms. "You're going to have to help me anyways. I can't move him alone."
"Let's go get the things we need before it gets packed and I won't have time." You stood up, heading to the door.
"You haven't asked us yet why we're here." The stern officer spoke up.
"Will you tell me if I do?" You asked.
"No." You gave the tall officer a pointed look.
"I don't trust you and you don't trust me. We're both walking on eggshells."
They both glared at you as they took in your words. It bothered them how well you knew how to work people. They were sure you were someone who spent her time observing from the way they saw you sizing them up when they had entered yesterday. You had much more hiding underneath and it bothered them when their captain brought it up. Of course he would be the first one to notice those kinds of things.
"You're too smart for your own good." Jongho told her.
"Smarter than you if you're a deputy running with outlaws."
Just as Jongho was about to retort something, you opened the door and turned to head out. However, someone was blocking your way. Your sister had her lips set in a thin line as her eyes went wide from seeing you opening up the door.
"I can explain." You told her.
"Dad is going to get mad." She nodded her head, looking between you and the other two men.
You glared at her, shoving her away from the door and into the hallway in order to have room to step out.
"Dad isn't going to know." You said.
"Sounds to me like you won't be having dessert for a week." Your sister shrugged.
"Fine." You rolled your eyes, giving in to her demands.
"Dad isn't going to know." She said, feigning locking her lips. She glanced over at the officer that said he was going to go to the pharmacy with you.
"She's never able to keep a man. We'll see how long you last." With that your sister walks on the balls of her feet back to the front lobby.
You sighed deeply as you watched her go, flinching when you felt the man's presence next to you.
"I believe her." He spoke up. You looked at him with a frown, eyebrows raised.
"I wouldn't think a man could handle you." You punched his bicep. He didn't flinch, only looked at you with a snarl.
"Let's go." You rushed to get away from the man.
As you reached the front desk, your mother was the one who was there attending to some of the patrons. As she told them to have a nice day, she saw you walking to the door followed by the officer.
"(Y/N)?" She called, a confused smile on her face as she watched the man stop at the door to allow you passage first. Her smile only brightened at how chivalrous he was.
"This guest asked me to take him to the pharmacy. Is that alright?" You told her, hands clasped in front of you.
"Oh, well-" Your mother kept her eyes on the man, waiting for him to say something. She knew how you were so she really hoped you didn't scare this one off.
"We won't be long. I just need a few things for me and my partner." Jongho politely told your mother.
"Of course." You noticed how she seemed to have deflated. You hummed to yourself, excusing the two of you.
The pharmacy was in the middle of the town. It was going to be a longer walk there than actually buying the items. You had the mental list prepared and knew where everything was. It should be an easy in-and-out thing.
"Your mother really wants you to get married." Jongho noted.
"Isn't that what every parent wants for their daughter?" You aimlessly answered. "To live in a house where all you do is cook, clean, and tend to the children."
"Your mother doesn't do that." He pointed out. "She works in the hotel."
"Yeah but the day I get married, I have to move out. No more working in the Inn." You explained.
Your mother works because it was the family business. But the moment she would get home she would have to cook and clean everything of the day. She had you and your sisters to help her with the load but it wasn't like all of you were ever home enough to do everything. She had her days where she would have to take off to care for one of your siblings but she was the one who managed the entire household.
You looked up to her more than anyone else, there was no doubt about that. But you knew that the day you were to leave the house you weren't going to be as lucky as her. Not many women worked in these times, not unless you were close to whoever you worked for. And who's to say your husband would forbid you from working?
That was another thing you were scared of. Losing the independence your family gave you. Maybe you were a bit too much, but if a man wasn't able to handle all of you then why bother to think he would be the one.
The pharmacy was close to the town center, along the main road. It was the only available medicinal place that had a good variety of treatments. Due to the town being the second largest along the river, it called for a lot of travel and trading which supported a lot of businesses.
You didn't feel like waiting longer, so you rushed to get all the things you needed into your basket. Jongho would walk slowly behind you, looking over the things you would gather and get more if he assumed his group would need it as well. The 10 minutes spent in the store was the smallest part of the trip.
When you glanced at all the things in the man's arms you made note of the things he was missing.
"You're going to need other things." You told him. "For your group."
He watched as you piled in more things into the basket, most of which were herbs and some things that he would assume were used in cooking.
"You should really educate yourself in superficial medicine." You spoke up. "Sometimes they work better than any chemical they infuse together."
"It's Yeosang who is in charge of our medical things." Jongho answered.
"Then why isn't he taking care of your friend?" You asked.
"Because that is Yeosang." You paused, snapping your head to him.
"You mean to tell me your medic allowed his wound to get infected?" You asked him astonished.
"No, I'm positive he knew what he was doing." Jongho shook his head. "He just didn't have the right things on hand."
You sighed deeply, dropping things onto the counter to pay for the items. You really wondered how these men had made it that far in life. It seemed some of them knew how to take care of the others or else she was positive things would just fall out of place.
The man had taken it upon himself to carry all the bags, making you hum at the fact that he did know manners. You didn't know anything about them, you didn't know their background. All you had to go off was the people they associated with and that caused you to come up with your own versions for each of them. You realized you had judged them just a bit.
"I'm (Y/N)." You spoke up, trying to start a conversation.
There was a pause as he took the moment to determine if he should tell you his name. Though he figured you already knew half of their names, knowing his wasn't going to affect much.
"Jongho." He told you stiffly. "Pleasure to make your acquaintance."
"Likewise."
