Chapter 13

I can't stop blushing. It's been nearly two weeks since Kongpob's dad was discharged from the hospital. Anya's dad was no longer on our neck and even though Anya herself was still living with the Suttiluck family, I was happy.

I guess not all happy. Kongpob's father while still doing very well seemed to have lost his ability to speak. The doctor's are hopeful that he would recover on his own otherwise they would have to do another surgery and they weren't hundred percent sure that he would live through it.

I was praying against another surgery and hoping for his full recovering. I don't know what I would do if I made him lose his ability to speak forever, or his life. It is my fault the accident happened, and a miracle that he lived, but if he doesn't fully recover I will forever be responsible and I won't ever forgive myself for it.

Kongpob comforts me, "don't worry about it. I'm sure dad doesn't blame you at all," he said to me one night while we were at my place.

"Yeah," I said reluctantly, "but I do. I need him to be okay again and walking around like before. I keep dreaming about that night."

"P'Arthit," his face was soft like it tend to be these days and I always feel like smiling when he looks at me like that, or calls me in that way that feels like it is going straight to my heart. "My father is going to be alright. You just stop worrying about him."

"Should I pay him a visit?" I have often wondered if I should brace for it and visit Mr. Sutiluck at the house. My fear of being rejected or denied entrance has kept me from doing so.

"No," Kong said looking alert and not very relaxed, "not yet P'Arthit. Let's give him some more space, my mother isn't going to be easy to convince either."

That's what I thought.

But other than that, I was happy. Kongpob visited me every day and I always gave in, despite my good judgment, to letting him spend the night when he wants. He was practically living with me.

Mornings with him can be so embarrassing, he was always gushing off poetically, I can't take it. Once, I had to use cello tape over his mouth to keep him from saying naughty things, but he managed to make my effort meaningless with just his hands.

I guess I should be worried about Anya, I mean why is she still living in the house. Kongpob should have called off the engagement by now. When I asked him he said, "P'Arthit, don't pay attention to anything you hear outside, Anya and I are never getting married."

"So you've ended the engagement?" I asked.

"For the mean time, you don't have to worry about that."

He distracted me so I didn't press the issue.

I was in my office getting ready to return home, Kongpob has called just a few minutes ago to tell me that he was on his way.

"Arthit." I raised my head and smiled at my friend P'Dean. No matter what Kongpob says, P'Dean is a friend and I won't push her away just because maybe she still has feelings for me.

I wasn't a fool. Though P'Dean has emphasized to me, after her argument with Kongpob at the hospital when she had left without even a word to me, that she felt nothing for me, she even wanted to end our friendship because Apparently, Kongpob accused her of playing me and of trying to use my moment of weakness to get into my heart— She was not happy for days but finally we are back on speaking terms, which I already told Kongpob to keep away any chances of misunderstanding, and everything was good between us again—still I could occasionally catch some expressions. I don't know if it is because of Kongpob putting it in my head, he is convinced P'Dean still has feelings for me, and now I am convinced too.

"Do you want to go home together?" she asked.

My car broke down some days ago and I have been driving with Ai'Pete home even though he lives on the opposite direction. This was the first time P'Dean is offering to take me.

"Sure," I readily agreed. "Just let me get my stuff."

Once we were on the road, it was silent between us; a type of comfortable silence where neither of us needed to say anything.

"So how are you and Kongpob?" she asked suddenly.

I blushed for the nth time that day and glanced at her. She was looking directly at the road.

"Fine," I replied. I am sure she doesn't want to have this conversation but I said, "We are still together and no one is stalking us anymore. "

"I see," she said," I'm glad for you, Arthit."

"You are?"

She glanced at me with a confused raise of her brow, "why do you sound so surprised?"

I didn't do that well. There was no way I am confronting her feelings for me, whether they were real or not. "Nothing, um, I guess I didn't know if you have forgiven Kongpob yet."

Se exhaled," there is nothing to forgive. I don't even understand myself, but I think I was being a good friend to you that day and I didn't deserve that from Kongpob."

"Yeah," I agreed. "He can be so jealous, " I paused, "do you know he even gets jealous of my pillow?"

She laughed, "Your pillow?"

I nodded, "I even had to sleep on his arm just to appease him."

"Wow, that is so..."

"Possessive? Childish?"

"I was going to say cute," she looked at me and I could see she was smiling. "I'm happy for the two of you."

Maybe I was wrong and Kongpob was wrong for putting it in my head. P'Dean can't say that so honestly if she has feelings for me, can she.

She pulled over in front of my compound and I could clearly see a female figure leaning on a car looking like she was waiting for someone. I paused in the car and P'Dean asked, "What's wrong?"

I didn't have to answer her as now the headlights are showing Anya very clearly, dressed in a red shimmering gown.

"That is..."

"How did she know where to find me?" I pulled off the seat belt and started to get out of the car but P'Dean caught my hand.

"Wait, Arthit," she was frowning deeply. "If she is here it can't be anything good. I don't think you should confront her."

"I'm not afraid of her," I said, my eyes leveled on the figure outside.

"No, but you remember what she did to you the last time, I don't think it would hurt to be a little cautious."

She was right, Anya can be tricky. I nodded and got down from the car. I won't fall for any story she tries to tell me.

When she sees me, she straightened up and stood there watching with a face I have never seen before. It looked like she felt she was the only one in the world. A real pitiful look. I didn't let myself get swayed by that. I knew her; she would use anything to her own advantage.

"What are you doing here, Anya? How did you know where I live?"

She glanced behind me and I knew P'Dean must have got down with me. I didn't need her there but it was nice to have her.

Anya opened her mouth," I followed Kongpob," she said. "P'Arthit? Have you no self-respect? How long are you going to keep doing this?"

"Did you come here to insult me, Anya?" if that was the case I am ready to ignore her. I don't even know why I was talking to her.

"I'm just wondering what kind of a person you are, P'Arthit." She shook her head, "I have already told you that you can't have Kongpob, I have already given you hints about why you can't have him."

"Is it about that secret?"

She blinked at me and I smiled, "I don't believe you Anya, after all you are a liar. Whatever you are holding over Kongpob is not true and I am not going to give him up no matter what."

She reared forward as if she wanted to attack me and my eyes went wide as I didn't expect an all out attack from her and in the open.
"You fool!" she yelled, "I am not lying. Tell me why Kongpob hasn't told you what it is yet? Because he knows I am not lying, because he knows that even at that possibility you would leave him."

"What is it then? What is the secret?"

She inhaled," you still haven't figured it out?"

"well tell me then, what is it. I will decide whether I believe you, but I don't think I will believe you though. You have lied to us so many times Anya. And I think now that the engagement has ended you are so desperate you will make up anything," I took a slow look at her, "do anything. Like the last time, when you tried to kill me."

"The engagement has ended?" she stepped forward again, the wind tossing the flair of her gown, "is that what Kongpob told you?"

"Hasn't it?" I asked.

"Of course not." She said it so vehemently I had to step back.

"Then why are you here? Why are you trying so hard to convince me to give up on Kongpob?"

"Because you foolish idiot! Kongpob is playing with fire and ruining his life just so he can be with you. Because your love for each other is only going to destroy the two of you and destroy a good family. Because I have an obligation to save the man I love. And unlike you and Kongpob I am not selfish."

Who was she kidding with that?

"Shut up, Anya. You don't know what you are talking about," I said. "None of it makes any sense. How is Kongpob ruining his life? How is our being together going to ruin a family? You and your father are the ones trying so hard to get in between us and ruin our lives."

"Then has it never occurred to you why my father hasn't said or done anything to you since you and Kongpob have not exactly made it less obvious that you are still together."

I had to pause. Yes it had occurred to me but I counted it off as his guilt at play.

"My father isn't a man to be trifled with and Kongpob is doing just that. It is only a matter of time before he retaliates and then what would we do if Kongpob gets hurt? I don't want Kongpob to get killed because of you, P'Arthit."

Get killed? No matter how I tried to ignore her, the tone of her voice that sounded urgent, afraid, was really hard to ignore. Was something going on that I am not aware of?

"P'Arthit, I will get on my knees if you want me to, I will beg till my throat is dry, please just leave Kongpob, let him go. I know I'm not you but I will make him happy too, I will always care for his needs..."

I shook my head, "stop it Anya. Just stop it. This is pathetic even for you. Why should I be the one to go? You came into our lives, we were fine before you came here and tried to ruin us. You've done so many awful things so don't you act like you are a good person, like you care one bit about Kongpob. Just go, back to where you came from."

"I know, I know that," she said and then to my astonishment went on her knees, "but I am still begging you P'Arthit. I know I am not a good person, I know I have lied a lot, I have hurt you many times, but I really love Kongpob. All I want is his happiness."

I stepped forward," and what do you think I want?" I pointed at myself, "Do you know what we've been through together? Do you have any idea? We have suffered because of you and your father and all we want is to be happy but you will not allow it. So don't beg me, seeing you like this makes me want to hate you even more."

"P'Arthit please..."

"That's enough Anya."

That wasn't me. I turned and Kongpob was there standing in front of P'Dean. He was wearing only the white of his suit that he had worn from my house that very morning. He looked tired and upset, his jaw set in a hard line.

He walked over to me and his fingers brushed my arm, his eyes inquiring. I nodded that I am fine and the two of us focused on Anya.

"Anya, what are you doing?" Kongpob asked.

She rose to her feet, her eyes looking a little wet, I didn't believe they were tears. She didn't answer him.

"I asked you a question Anya," Kongpob's voice rose an octave. He has not sounded like that in a long time. Kong didn't get angry often and I was wrong about him being upset, Kong was mad.

I glanced at him from the corner of my eyes. His face was dark with anger and he looked like he was controlling himself but barely. I could see his jaw clenching.

"I had to come, "Anya finally opened her mouth. "since you won't say it I wanted to come and say it."

Kongpob didn't say anything so I asked, "say what?" certainly not that begging she was doing a moment ago.

"The thing with my father..."

"Shut up," Kongpob said so severely his voice was more like a growl. "Don't say another word, Anya, because if you speak even a single syllable you will see my reaction and you will not like it."

I didn't ask anymore. I didn't trust anything Anya said anyway. Kongpob surprised me when he walked over and grabbed Anya's hand. "Come here, let me take you back home."

Home. I didn't let myself nibble on that word, "Kongpob," I called.

"Sorry, P'Arthit," he smiled, "I will be back in a bit,"

I actually wanted an explanation but I didn't stop him from dragging Anya passed me.

"My car, "Anya shouted, not struggling out of his gripping but dragging her feet. I haven't seen Kongpob like that. As I watched them it left a taste in my mouth that I didn't understand. Or maybe I didn't want to understand it.

I heard Kongpob's car start and the drove off past me.

"Arthit, are you alright?" P'Dean was still standing by her car. What did she think of all this?

"I'm fine, "I said.

"That was strange," she said.

"What was," I pretended to be oblivious.

"That," she pointed after Kongpob and Anya. I bit the inside of my lip. "What is going on between those two?"

"What are you talking about?" there was something in my head that wanted to avoid this topic, subtle rejections of something that I haven't let myself think about.

"You know what. Are you sure nothing is going on?"

"Exactly what are you referring to P'Dean?"

Something in my voice must have warned her that I wanted her off this topic because she looked at me carefully and exhaled. "I just don't trust that girl"

"Neither do I," I said, "besides, whatever is going on, if anything is going on, Kongpob would tell me about it."

"If you really trust him."

I didn't respond with obstinate will. I won't doubt Kongpob. He won't keep anything from me or lie to me. Aside from the secret which I found strange he still hasn't told me, I trusted him wholeheartedly.

"Don't you need to get home, P'Dean?" I asked.

"Yes," she nodded. I waited till she was in her car, waved goodbye before walking off into the building.

Third person Pov

Dean drove slowly, she wasn't in any hurry to get home. No one waited for her at home. She just needed a chance to get some clear head.

The scene with Anya and Kongpob kept niggling at her. What was going on between those two? At the hospital they practically acted like a couple. Arthit wasn't ready to admit it but something fishy was going on.

She was just about to cross back into the highway when she noticed two people talking next to a car. Had it not been for the headlights still on, in that darkness she would have missed Kongpob and Anya.

She squinted at them. They were having a heated argument. Dean knew it was no business of hers. It seemed there was a lot of drama going on around Arthit and Kongpob, it would be best to ignore this and drive home. Whatever it was did not concern her.

Yet she pulled her car over and turned off the lights. Dean sighed at herself, "just what am I hoping to achieve here?"

It's not like Kongpob was cheating. Kongpob wouldn't cheat, certainly not with a girl like Anya. Still she got out of the car and in the darkness, crept closer so she could easily hear what they were saying.

Anya and Kongpob were packed at the right side of the road, talking but not too loudly. Kongpob looked frustrated and was tugging at his tie often while waving his hand about. Anya looked scorned and had her arms crossed.

Dean got close enough to finally catch whiff of what they were saying. She had to lean sideways into the fence next to her.

"Kongpob, please stop it. Just how long are you planning to keep this a secret? I'm going to start showing soon, your mother already knows, are we going to wait until my father figures it out."

"I told you before that you should do what you were planning to do before."

"No way, I am not going to run off to live in secret while you and P'Arthit remain together."

"Why don't you get it Anya?! I don't want to marry you, I won't ever marry you."

"You are the one who doesn't get it Kongpob, if you don't marry me and my father finds out that I am pregnant, You won't have the chance to think of being with P'Arthit. Your only option is to take my father's deal."

Dean thought her ears would fall off. She didn't believe it, couldn't believe it. By pregnant did Anya mean with Kongpob's baby? No, that can't be, Kongpob isn't that kind of a person, he wouldn't do that to Arthit.

Kongpob was shaking his head, hopefully to deny it but he said, "he can't find out, Anya."

"Then what do you want me to do. You haven't even told P'Arthit, when he finds out do you think he is going to remain your boyfriend."

"Anya, don't even say that again. P'Arthit can't ever find out."

"What? Are you planning to keep it a secret from him forever?" she laughed incredulously, which was how Dean felt watching them and hearing all these things. She held a hand to her mouth to keep from... what, shouting at them, crying?

This was the man she thought was good for Arthit? She held back all her feelings that have since the day he asked her to pretend to be his girlfriend started rise again. She fought it because she thought Arthit has found a good man, Kongpob is a good man but here is hiding such a terrible secret from him.

Arthit, poor Arthit. How miserable will he be to hear about this?

"I will tell him, I just, I can't right now."

"You know that's not why you don't want to tell him. You don't want him to know that you were unfaithful, that you betrayed his trust."

Kongpob lowered his heard and turned away, one hand on his waist and the other on the roof of the car.

"If you love him you will just come out with the truth, but you don't want to do that."

"Anya please!" he yelled, whipping around on her. "I get it okay. I know I am selfish, disgusting, greedy, heartless. I know that I should take responsibility for what I have done. I know that very well. I know it." he shouted, "but I can't. I love P'Arthit too much, I can't be a good person in this matter, I can't be selfless, I can't be kind. My love for P'Arthit, my desire to be with him won't make me turn away and marry you to take responsibility for this. So yes, I am not going to tell him, yet, and yes you will keep this a secret and never say anything because if you do I will never forgive you. Do you understand?"

He threw a set of keys to her. "Here take my car and go home."

"You are going back to him?!"

Anya looked so outraged, even more than Dean who has lost all sympathy for Kongpob. She couldn't believe what he was saying at all. Was this really Kongpob saying all these things?

"Yes, I am. Go Anya and don't ever show up there again otherwise I will have you thrown out of my house," he turned and started walking towards Dean. He can't know that she was there but if she didn't move he would definitely see her.

Dean shifted and shifted slowly into the compound beyond the fence until she was hidden by a high grass or flower. It wasn't long after that Kongpob went past her. She could see the white of his shirt but not his face.

After some time, she stepped out and stared in the direction that Kongpob had gone. How could he do this to Arthit? I won't let him deceive Arthit anymore.

She began to cross when she heard the sound of a car. She had nearly forgotten to check on Anya. Dean turned and saw that Kongpob's car was driving backwards fast towards her.

Her heart flew to her throat just as the car hit her. She smashed her face on the window screen, and then her head on the asphalt. She was still conscious and feeling the pain and ringing in her head. Everything turned white.

Anya was suddenly in front of her, her white face glaring. Dean couldn't stay conscious anymore, she fell into the darkness.
