Chapter 20
Pete was coming to see me. I didn't feel like seeing or talking to anyone. I haven't spoken to Kongpob in days and I was pretending to be okay. He called me while I was pretending to eat dinner, my apetite these days was nothing, and said he was coming over to tell me something.
I heard the door and got up from the stool I was sitting on to open it. Pete looked normal, a little rumpled around the edges, which was strange given that he was particularly meticulous about his appearance. His white hair had since started to turn black around the roots and his jacket was a little crinkled.
"Pete," I said knowing I sounded exasperated. I was sorry I kissed Pete and hurt him but I didn't want to think or talk about it, even with him. Make that especially with him.
"Hi, P'Arthit," he smiled.
I let him in so as not seem rude and we sat down to talk. After sometime I heard the door and tensed, then I went to open it.
Anya was there. The minute I had the door open she pointed a gun at me. My heart flinched as I let go of the handle of my door. "Don't speak, P'Arthit. Just do exactly as I tell you."
I nodded wordlessly. She told me to tell Pete I was going out to get something from the market and then when the door was closed, she wrapped an arm around my shoulder to draw me close then pulled away to point the gun hard into my side.
I swallowed and walked. It was lonely in my apartment building at that time which was just before nightfall. People were in their houses getting settled in from work. No one saw us leave.
"What are you doing Anya," I began to speak, the surreal nature of things finally wearing off. I don't know why I am surprised Anya was going this far.
"What I should have done a long time ago." She said and shoved the gun into me.
"You don't have to do this, Kongpob and I are over, you can have him. "
She scoffed. "I know what my brother told you. About how I induced my labor?"
"Did you?" I asked.
She glanced sideways at me as if to say what do you think.
I swallowed again.
"After hearing that, I bet you would run to tell Kongpob, convince him that I have something to hide."
"You do. You know that the baby isn't Kongpob's."
There was a dark building nearby that was empty. No one lived there anymore and it was run down and slanting to the side. Anya walked me in and I glanced around for anyone to call for help. Or something I could use to protect myself. Anya maybe a woman but she knew her way around a gun. I am sure of it and she probably has combat skills she learned when she was in the army. I would have to be desperate to try and struggle with her now.
"That's what you want to believe."
My stomach tightened. "If it isn't the truth then why are you trying so hard to get me out of the way? Why did you have the baby cremated? If that child was really Kongpob's you would definitely have nothing to hide and even flaunt it to me, but instead you are doing this."
"I don't want to put anymore doubts in Kongpob's mind," she said.
"Oh cut the crap, Anya. You are going to kill me at the very least say the truth."
I sensed her smiling even though I couldn't see her face.
"You've accepted that you need to die for there to be peace between Kongpob and I?"
"Of course not. I can't forgive you for what you've done to us, but you have a gun pointed at me and if I am going to die I... at least want to know the truth."
"Okay fine." I blinked. She actually agreed. I started to turn but she pushed me back. "Don't move."
She walked away and I tried to turn and see what she was doing but she returned quickly. "Quick, tie yourself up."
"What?"
She wasn't going to shoot me?
"You heard me. Tie yourself up now or I will pull the trigger right now and you will never know anything."
I sighed and did as she said. I noticed as I wound the rope around my arms that it was soaked in a liquid. In petrol. I whipped around and stared at her. "You want to burn me? is that how you are going to kill me."
"A bullet would be easy to trace, but if you burn no one would be able to recognize you. Also, I will make a convincing letter telling Kongpob you've traveled out of the country because of everything. "
"So that's what you think you have to do."
"You drove me to do this, P'Arthit. If you didn'—"
"They would still find a way to get you for this."
"They won't find your body in a long time. Well you are going to be buried here and tomorrow they will burn down this building, I heard it was infested or something. When they blow it up, you are going to burn along with it. Before they ever find out that you are in here, it would be a long time, possibly never. "She sniffed.
My heart jumped as I thought about being buried under this building for years while Anya got away with my murder.
"Don't worry, I will tell you the truth. You are right, Kongpob and I never slept together that night."
My eyes went to hers and I tried to suppress my fright. "Then what happened?"
"We got drunk. I tried to initiate contact but he kept calling out your name and then he passed out. I couldn't do anything. It was so disappointing. I wanted Kongpob to be my first."
"So you slept with someone, got yourself pregnant and then actually used this to trap Kongpob? "
She stared at me and shook her head. "that would be stupid. Except that morning Kongpob was so sure that something happened between us. He was so terrified. I knew if I told him something happened he would believe it, but that would not be enough so I found a way to get myself pregnant without defiling myself. I only want Kongpob to be my first."
I stared at her, my mouth hanging open.
"Surprised?"
"Terrified. How could you go to such a length, is it worth that much to you."
"No because I lost the baby. I never planned on losing the baby. "She clicked her tongue, "but Kongpob would keep running to you."
"So you induced your labor and blamed him for the death of the child."
"Yes. Nothing but guilt works best on Kongpob. Now he won't do anything but take care of me for the rest of my life after you are gone, of course."
"That will never happen."
I turned to see Kongpob at the entrance of the building.
"K-Kongpob..." Anya looked stupefied. I stood and let the ropes fall off me as I stared at her. "Why are you... what are you...." She looked between us.
"Anya, I can't believe you. I can't believe myself. Why for one moment could I think that you would be honest about anything?"
"What is happening? Why are you here Kongpob? You aren't supposed to be here."
Pete climbed over and stood next to Kongpob. She stared agape at the two "Pete?"
"When I told P'Arthit the truth, do you know the first thing he asked me? He asked me, did you tell Anya you are coming to tell me this?" he paused and pulled in a breath. "At first I couldn't understand what he meant but... then P'Arthit knew you more than I did. "
"I suspected that you would try to stop me from telling Kongpob." I said.
"So this... is a trap."
"Yes," Kongpob said and approached her. She was relaxed and in daze for a moment then her shaky hand swung the gun on Kongpob.
"No, that can't be. No way. You are supposed to be at home, I made sure that you will never know of this."
"I called him," Pete said. "P'Arthit wanted to leave him out of it but I couldn't."
"And I couldn't believe it..." the person who talked made Anya whimper. Kongpob's mother stood there staring with so much sadness in her eyes. "Anya, after everything that I gave you, after the love that I showed you, this is how you repay me?"
"How, how did you get into this."
"Kongpob told me all your father did to him and my husband. He told me all that you are capable of. When you said you wanted to cremate the baby and I told you to leave it so that Arthit and Kongpob would never have any reason to doubt you, you refused and so I wanted to know for sure if what Arthit is saying was true. The fact that you induced your labor..." she shook her head. "Anya, you are a monster. No woman would ever do that to their unborn child."
"so-so you are saying you all planned this? That's impossible. No one could have known that I would do this. No one."
"I suspected and I was right. Sure I never guessed you would bring me here but I knew you couldn't wait to find some way to shut me up. You would have killed Pete if you could, but he is your own brother, also if you killed me and made it look like an accident, you can have Kongpob to yourself. It is a win win for you. So I told Pete that you would come and to be ready. The minute I froze in front of the door, Pete already suspected something and must have followed us."
I glanced at Pete and he nodded. "Kongpob already saw the two of you though. He was just coming while you two left I had to stop him from interfering."
"That's because he told me that P'Arthit wanted to use this opportunity to get the truth out of you. And though I was afraid you would hurt him," Kongpob said and glanced at me, "I knew if I got in the way of finding out the truth then he would never forgive me."
"So you all tricked me?" she lowered the gun as if her hand lost all strength then she began to laugh. "No, no! That's not possible" she raised the gun and pointed it undecidedly at me and my eyes went wide.
"Anya!" Kongpob shouted. She swung as if startled and pointed it at Kongpob. My heart froze and I started to inch closer to her.
"P'Arthit don't," Kongpob warned and the gun was back on me again. I could see Anya reach her decision that it had to me.
"I won't let you take him away from me."
I don't know how Kongpob got there so fast. Suddenly he was in front of me, his arms around me. I fell back several steps though I remained on my feet.
Bang.
The shot rocked us both and it was so loud.
I gasped and held Kongpob.
"That's enough." Over Kongpob's shoulder I see two police men grabbed Anya's arm and wrestled the gun out of it. She screamed and shouted denials, made up stories and apologized as they cuffed her.
I ignored all that and shook Kongpob. He was so still in my arms. Was he hurt? "Kongpob? Kongpob!?" I could feel his heart beating against mine. He pulled away and looked at me. There was a line of blood on his face.
"You are okay," he said with tears in his voice and hugged me again.
"I am okay," I said and pulled away. "Are you?" I touched the place bleeding. He winced and looked at my finger covered with blood.
"Yeah, " he nodded. " I love you. I thought that I wouldn't get to you in time. Sorry P'Arthit, I am so sorry. I trusted Anya, I let her deceive me and I hurt you."
I nodded and accepted his apology. "I had to trust you more than I trust her. When you told me that you were sure that something happened that night even though you couldn't remember, I trusted that you wouldn't do that to me."
He nodded. "I am stupid and I don't know what is right or wrong anymore, but what I do know and what I do trust is my love for you and the fact that I would never hurt you."
"But you did hurt me," I said looking painfully at him. "You lied to me and you deceived me for a long time."
"P'Arthit..." he began to protest but I shut him up.
"Let's get you to the hospital so that they can treat that."
End Note: so this is the end of the story, but there is one more chapter. Think of it as the epilogue of the story. Feel free to skip it if you are satisfied with how the story ended.
