Chapter 8

My parents were not aware that Mr Rojhat was visiting. My mother left for a visit to a friend, my father was still at work and I was called over by Anya to see him.

He was as imposing as ever and this time there was another man with him. I wasn't banking on that so I shifted my phone out of sight.

I tapped record even before I got out of the car. I had made sure I had enough space for a long recording the day before. When I entered my own family living room it was almost like entering a lion's nest. It wasn't my living room any more but a place reeking with danger.

While I stood, Mr Rojhat was seating. His friend—whoever he was— stood behind the couch. He had bald head and a mustache. His eyes were tiny and made him look like he was peering. But I was uncomfortable about him.

"Kongpob, welcome. Seat down, feel relaxed."

I don't know if that was a sort of joke to him but I did not feel inclined to listen. I also wanted to provoke him to say anything that I could use against him.

"I am fine standing. It is impossible for me to relax in front of the person holding the man I love ransom."

"Ransom," he turned his face to Anya then back to me, "I am doing no such thing. "

Anya was standing a distance away as though she couldn't come any closer. Her eyes were looking anxiously at us. I hated that look. So she was afraid but went ahead to tell her father about P'Arthit and I.

"Then," I said, "What do you call threatening to harm the man I love if I don't stay away from him and remain engaged to your daughter? What do you call putting someone to spy on me and hack my laptop just so I would feel helpless and be unable to contact him or say anything to anyone."

He didn't answer me and his eyes set together and lowered as if he was thinking deeply about what I was saying. I didn't think he would have a change of heart simply because I am saying these things; I don't actually care if he did. All I want is for him to admit what I just said.

"I see, so that's how you interpreted my actions."

I tilted my head," is there any other way for me to interpret it."

"No, that's fine. I am just surprised that despite knowing that you still disobeyed me and met with that man."

I didn't say anything, my hands clenched at my side. I know this was why he came but I didn't want him to think about P'Arthit, I wanted him to focus his annoyance at me and therefore his actions would be thrown at me.

"You are really bold, Kongpob. Could it be that you did not take my threats seriously. So you think I am joking?" he leaned forward.

"No, I don't."

"No you do, you think I am joking and that's why you have been misbehaving and acting out. Secret meetings aren't allowed. I am convinced now that you are playing around with me, that you didn't actually end everything with that man."

"I did," I said quickly, my eyes darting to Anya. She must have said more to him than just the meeting.

"Really,"

"Yes. Like I promised I haven't met with P'Arthit, I am staying away from him and he hasn't come to meet me either."

"Except that he has called you," this was her, the maid in my house who really wasn't a maid but Mr Rojhat's spy. "And you locked yourself away in a bathroom with him."

"That was not my fault. P'Arthit called me by accident and what happened at the pharmacy was just a coincidence."

"I don't think so, I don't believe in coincidences you know."

I was starting to sweat as I could sense where this conversation was going. "Please don't hurt him," I heard myself say, unable to hold it back. "I won't ever see him again. I will make sure that our paths do not cross again."

His face twisted into a ugly sneer, "your pleading for him so desperately is revolting. And I still think you both need to be taught a lesson."

"Okay, teach me. Hurt me, I will do anything, take on anything. Just don't go to him. He didn't do anything wrong."

"But you did," Anya's father nodded at the maid and she walked past the couch to me. Her hands reached for my jacket and I walked back away from her, my eyes stretching wide anxiously.

"What do you want to do?" I didn't want the phone to be found, if it is found then I am going to be in so much trouble and P'Arthit might be the one to suffer for it.

"I know that you have something recording this whole conversation, "she said. How did she know? I only pushed the button in my car and I was alone. Don't tell me that she fixed a camera in my car?

"That's not true, I don't have anything like that."

She walked to me again," then let me search you."

It occurred to me that I shouldn't have left the phone on me, that I should have found a way to hide it and that of course he would know to check me.

"Please, just leave us alone. We won't ever do anything to you. Just let us live our lives," I pleaded with no other choice in front of me.

If I could just distract them somehow so that I could do something about the recording still on.

"Stop resisting, young master Kongpob, otherwise I will have to use force.

"Okay, okay." I accepted and let my hand drop from my jacket. The phone was in my breast pocket and she started with it immediately. I felt her hand close over it and pull it out.

"Punish me," I said as she gave it to Anya's father. He looked at it then at me. "Do what you want with me."

"It's not that I don't understand, I did not expect you to just go with what I said," Anya's father passed the phone to the man behind him. "But still, I really don't like this Kongpob. "

"Father, it is not Kongpob's fault but P'Arthit. He is the one that is gay, he is the one still trying to get back with Kongpob."Anya was speaking fast while maintaining a safe distance.

"You be quiet," he said to her. "They are both obviously gay as shit."

"No, father, Kongpob and I have already decided to get married. He doesn't want to go back to P'Arthit."

"That's not true," I meant to say, but lowered my voice as it occurred to me that I might help P'Arthit if I accepted that.

"does that make sense, Anya," the man behind said," If he doesn't want to then why did he do this?"

"Bring it," Anya's father raised his voice, interrupting the two. "Let him see just what I have planned."

I furrowed my brow as a laptop was opened and the man played around with it while walking towards me.

When the screen faced me, I saw P'Arthit. He was just leaving the office and was heading to his car. He was alone and seemed to have left work late.

"I have a guy on standby right now, ready to do something about him. Depending on what you say, he will be either spared or hurt very badly."

I shook my head in horror as I could see the hand of the person holding the camera for this life streaming. "Please don't, I'm begging you. I don't want to have anything to do with him, I swear. I really don't. Please don't hurt him." I was begging with all my heart but his expression was not moved.

"If I leave him as he is, you will go back to him and try this again, and I don't think leaving you unpunished is the way to go about this Kongpob."

"Then punish me!" I yelled, getting angry. "Only me, don't drag him into this. Beat me up, hurt me as badly as you want. I don't care, just don't touch him. Please, don't do anything to him. He hasn't done anything wrong, it is all me. I am the only one who did this."

"But I feel that by hurting him I am hurting you. Besides, I can't hurt you because of your father and my daughter who really loves you."

"I will marry your daughter," my eyes moved to Anya, "I will marry her and stay faithful to her, just let him go."

"If I do that, don't you think he will come back to you and try to ruin your wedding like the last time? No, I will just take care of him now."

"Then I will never marry Anya, and your daughter will never be happy."

He looked to Anya and I said, "what if P'Arthit has a girlfriend." I remembered P'Dean and P'Arthit pretending to be a couple. Even the maid had heard that I am sure.

"He has a girlfriend now," I said firmly.

"Is that true?"

"There was a girl with him who claimed such but I can't say if it is true or not," the maid answered.

Anya's father thought about it and I waited anxiously for his answer, my heart unable to return to my chest and throbbing painfully in my head. I kept glancing at the screen which was showing the back of P'Arthit's car.

"Okay. If you can prove to me that she is his girlfriend then I will think about it."

I frowned, "how will I do that. "

"Yes, my birthday is coming soon and I will be celebrating it. Bring them both so I will have a look."

I stared at him and nodded, "okay, I will—"

"You will not do anything. If it is not true that he has a girlfriend I am sure you will go and warn him. Make some foolish plan to deceive me. I won't accept that."

My face set as dread made my spine itch, "and if it is not true."

"Well, you know what happens then."

"But father, how will P'Arthit be able to come to the party." Anya asked the question I was going to ask and I waited for the answer.

Anya's father nodded to the maid, "you can send the invite and word it ambiguously."

"Sir," she replied and I regained some of my boldness.

"P'Arthit will never accept an invite from someone like you, he has no reason to come. Just let me talk to him, let me tell him why he needs to..."

He laughed, a sound that felt like nails scrapping my back and tearing my skin.

"Not happening, Kongpob. "His face turned serious, "if you are worried he wouldn't want to come I'm sure Asha can think of something to entice him. "

The maid nodded without saying anything. I don't know what that means but it looked like she understood.

"What kind of something?"

"hmm, we can make an announcement of your wedding date," she said, her eyes shadowed as she looked my way. "or we can threaten to do something to you. "

My voice choked me," but—t but why would P'Arthit bring his girlfriend? He doesn't—"

Before I could finish it occurred to me that P'Arthit might use P'Dean as an excuse to come. When he comes then what would happen. I have a really bad feeling about this.

"Just his coming will do, the girl will receive her own invitation and then we will see what happens."

I sagged, thinking that there might be a way after all but it was a stretch. If P'Dean comes on her own from receiving the invitation it simply meant that she was not with P'Arthit and if she was interrogated then she would have to say the truth. I am sure that they would use some sort of disguise to bring her and interrogate her.

And if P'Arthit comes alone, then it was all over. What they would do to him, I can't even bring myself to imagine it. But there was still a chance. It was possible that P'Arthit could decide to bring P'Dean again, P'Dean also could play along like she did at the pharmacy. But if she doesn't, if they invite her and she doesn't tell P'Arthit about it then it is over. P'Arthit and P'Dean will come separately and then no matter what I say Anya's father would never believe.

I looked at him as he smiled, his dark eyes glinting. He probably doesn't believe me anyway. He was just giving me enough rope so I can hang myself with it. But still, I had no choice.

I looked at the screen again and P'Arthit was still driving off in his car but his tailer was following him carefully. I sighed and closed my eyes in one indecisive moment.

"Okay, please. Okay. I will do whatever you want. I only ask that you don't say that I am getting married or announce my wedding. I don't have any plans for getting married."

Anya spluttered behind me and her father smiled towards her, "that's too bad. You know the smartest thing to do would be to marry her but you won't. You are stubborn. "

I wasn't trying to be stubborn, maybe if Anya was just a girl I got involved with and she got pregnant, I would have married her. Even if it means never experiencing true happiness again, I would do what is right. But Anya has hurt me and she has hurt the person I love more than anything. She is manipulating my mother, intruding in my life and making everything difficult for me. I can't even stomach the thought of being married to her.

"Kongpob, please, don't say anything too hasty." Anya was saying but I and her father were not listening.

"In that case I am going to leave you. When all this is settled, we shall discuss how to end your engagement in the most amicable and flawless way, hm?"

I nodded. He turned once to the man and then both of them strolled out of my house like they owned it. Anya ran after them saying something about marriage and me.

I let out a sigh but it was too soon.

"I know you have something planned," the maid, Asha, said. She had no expression but was assessing me. "I will be keeping my eyes on you to make sure you don't inform that man."

"Which is what you have been doing before so no need to inform me just do whatever you like."
I turned away from her and matched with all confidence to my room aware that her eyes never left me. When I was in my room I didn't relax either. I started to madly check for hidden cameras. I turned my bed over, my bookcase too. I pushed out all the books and the sound of them falling seemed to resonate something within me. I began to kick anything and smash all that I could get my hands on. I have never felt so furious.

But soon my feelings started to slip from me, taking me to a deep dive down that sucked nearly all the energy from me so that I just crumbled and sat on the floor, tired and afraid for P'Arthit.

Once again I have put P'Arthit in danger; once again I continue to hurt him. There is nothing I can think of to help him. I lied that P'Dean was his girlfriend to help him but I might as well have doomed them both. How will I ever tell P'Arthit to come with P'Dean, to keep pretending that they are together? Who will I ask to help me?

I could try talking to P'Arthit's friends so that one of them would give him the message but she would be watching, she would even stop me at any time that she thinks she needs to.

"P'Arthit," I muttered, "how can I save you from my mistake?" what can I give up to help him. I would give anything.

"Kongpob," Anya was in my room without knocking. "What are you doing?"

"Go away."

"Were you serious," she really wasn't leaving. She just did whatever she liked. "About marrying me?'

I turned and met her eyes but didn't say anything.

"I have a solution—"

I laughed a breath, "I know exactly what your solution is, Anya." And I was beginning to think that was really the only way. I have to do it, I can't keep on being selfish. Besides, P'Arthit deserves someone better, he deserves complete happiness, but my actions have tarnished any chance that I will ever be able to give him. So this is how it will have to be. "I accept, "I said, "I will do what you want, Anya."

She was taken aback, her eyes wide, but then she began to smile. "Thank you!" she rushed in and hugged me. "I promise I will make you happy, I will be good to you Kongpob. I am so happy. Thank you Kongpob."

I did nothing as she kept me in her embrace, I was just staring unseeingly at nothing.

Third person Pov

When Pete saw Arthit walking down the hallway, he had to admire him a little. That face, and that body, he was a complete hottie but why did he dress so blandly. There were only these boring colors: white, black and grey in his wardrobe. At least the ones he wore to work. Still, it doesn't change the fact that he was a very attractive man.

"Ai'Pete, what are you spacing out over there for?" he was caught gawking at his team leader by said team leader.

Feeling a little embarrassed, Pete yelled, "me space out? Isn't that your specialty, team leader?"

Arthit's brows squeezed helplessly like he didn't want to ask but did, "what are you talking about?"

"Well you have been spacing out a lot. What are you thinking about? Kongpob?"

That startled the team leader to look about them, "watch what you say, Pete." He said with a low voice.

"hm?" Pete wasn't one to receive simple chiding without poking, "why. Is no one allowed to say Kongpob's name anymore?"

Arthit sighed with irritation, "that's not it. "

"I know you people ended things, that's what I heard anyway."

He looked hesitant but nodded, "yes, so now shut up about it."

"That's weird, so you don't want your ex's name to be mentioned. Is it because you still love him?"

Pete was only teasing but a brief look clouded the usually alert black eyes then faded. "You like talking so much don't you, Pete. Here," Pete was being handed a large stack of papers that he hadn't seen the team leader holding.

"What?" he blinked stupefied.

"Go and make copies of this." The team leader said with a small evil smile.

"What, no way, I was just going for lunch."

"Oh really," Arthit started to waver about putting his junior colleague to work.

"Uh but, if you go to lunch with me then I will more than happily do it later."

Arthit saw that it was reasonable and he did want to go for lunch anyway, though he never planned to bring anyone along but this was even better. "Okay, we will go, "he nodded.

Pete was not expecting to hear an agreement to his impromptu plan and became so excited when he heard that. "yay!" he raised his hands up and danced.

Arthit laughed, "are you that happy?" he asked, feeling good.

"it's the best I have felt since I broke up with P'Boss," Pete said laughing.

Arthit tilted his head, "you and your lover broke up?" no wonder Pete has been looking glum for a while now. Arthit had been so lost in his own worries these past weeks to find out why.

"Yeah," he was smiling but it was not sincere. "I guess now we are the most handsome single guys in the office," he posed," of course I am more beautiful than handsome aren't I?"

Arthit laughed, "if you going to admit it yourself. Let me drop this by the office then we can go and eat lunch. I hope you don't mind eating out."

Pete never expected that the out was referring to a restaurant not too far from the plastic manufacturing company that Arthit himself frequented.

"Team leader, are you meeting someone?" he asked when they settled down and waited for their orders.

"Don't worry, I'm not inviting them to seat with us."

"You are not?" Arthit just smiled and then looked towards the door. "They are here now, Pete I will back okay?"

He got up and walked away from their table, approaching a person at the door. It was all very strange. Why did Arthit agree to eat with him if he was going to see someone? Pete wanted to see who it was, for some reason he hoped it was not a guy. The team leader only just recently broke up with Kongpob, Pete hoped he wasn't starting to move on with someone else.

That was a strange thing to worry about but his curious eyes fixed on the person at the door. His breath died in his throat. She was tall and slim, light brown hair and shapely eyes. That was Anya! Why was Anya here? Pete would recognize her anywhere. To avoid being seen, he rose to his feet and went the other way, looking for the back exit. I can't allow her to see me, he said, shaking as he walked.

When he was seated in front of his computer pretending to work, he thought about many reasons why Anya would be meeting with Arthit. She can't already know that he was here. She can't know that but then what was her relationship with Arthit. If he had been a moment later in his reaction and she saw him then it was over.

"Pete? Ai'Pete?"

He started and looked at the team leader's face. "What?" he cleared his throat and seated straight. "Did you call me, Team leader?"

"Of course, what were you thinking about? Are you okay?"

"What?! I am fine, perfectly fine." He laughed foolishly and then quieted down almost immediately.

"Why did you leave without telling me then," Arthit didn't sound angry, only a little concerned. This is why he is so good. Arthit has always shown this type of care to everyone, he was the nicest guy Pete has ever met. Sure he can be a little strict and worked too seriously and has a nasty temper, but he was still one of the best people Pete knew.

"I just, I was feeling a little tired, that's all."

"hm, still you should have told me though," he said, folding his arms.

Pete asked, "who was that person you were meeting? It was a girl I have never seen before, are you already back in the dating game, that's so fast team leader."

"Shut up, stop talking nonsense. That girl is Anya, the one who was going to marry Kongpob."

Pete shook. The Anya was actually that Anya? He didn't hide his surprise well.

"Why do you look so shocked?"

"hm?" he lowered his eyes, "if I tell you, you are going to hate me."

"No I'm not. Just spit it out."

"Team leader, I didn't know that it was her." He started, "I only just found out today."
"You didn't know who was her?"

He squeezed his thigh, "Anya. She is my sister."
