Aligning Stars

The night before graduation. Talk about bittersweet. You were leaving a huge part of your life behind. Yes, high school, not exactly the best time of your life and most everyone will say the same thing, however, you still felt touches of sadness with the coming day. It was scary and thrilling, all in one. The only thing keeping your nerves at bay was that of Peter Parker.

You'd been friends for years and he knew you better than anyone as you did him. He took one look at you as you made sure you had everything for the ceremony tomorrow and knew you were feeling uneasy. You had the entire summer but that was it. Three months and then you'd both be off to college, across state from each other. So, Peter did what he does best, offered an open ear.

He told you to meet him at the park just outside of Queens. And you agreed without hesitation. You grabbed a jacket before taking your car to the park you and Peter frequently went when things got a little too heavy. You couldn't reach him after the ferry incident your sophomore year so you made your way to that park just to find him sulking. And you listened. He couldn't reach you after your first bad break up so he came to the park and found you sitting under your favorite tree. And he listened because that's what friends do. It wasn't some hidden park or anything remotely close but you two just seemed to gravitate towards it and tonight you were especially grateful for it.

"Hey," You greet him with a smile as he's seated under your tree with a blanket scrawled out and a telescope sitting just under where the leaves stopped. "Whatcha got planned?" You muse, sitting beside him.

"I gotta show you something." He says tugging you to the telescope.

"Peter Parker, you did not." You laugh as he tells you where to look to which you see plenty of stars but the one in the middle was his specific direction.

"I, uh, I bought you a star." Peter says, a timid smile resting on his face as he rubs the back of his neck.

"You bought me a star?" You look away and try your hardest to hide your face-splitting smile. What did you do to deserve someone as pure as Peter Parker?

"Yeah," He shrugs before biting his lip. "You're leaving after the summer, and uh, well, I know you like the stars so, wherever you end up, you can see it and it'll always be there."

"I won't be far." Your heart flutters in your ribcage as you watch him over, unspoken feeling wanting to be blurted from you both.

"Yeah, but one day you might be and this way," Peter pauses as he takes in a deep breath, "I'd follow you anywhere and now I can."

You feel a lump form in your throat as you look over the boy that would never even dream of hurting you. He was your best friend and of course, you liked him. The cliche, truly, but it was different. You had boyfriends and he had girlfriends. There wasn't jealousy or animosity towards anyone. It was different with him because deep down, you always had faith in the stars. If he was going to be yours, he would be and maybe high school isn't the right time for the two of you and friends is what it should be. But, now high school officially ends tomorrow afternoon and his caramel eyes are staring you over and his hair is a little messy from the worn down gel and he still looked absolutely perfect.

He bought you a star so he could always follow you.

"You're the sweetest person on the planet." You announce, staring at him in awe.

Peter's cheeks flush as his hands grow cold and anxiety starts to trickle through him. "Thanks, for always being here." Peter's timid smile falls as the sincerity drips from his words.

He jerks his head behind him and he lays down, placing one arm behind his head and offering you the spot on his chest. You take your spot as his arm wraps around you and you listen to the soft beat of his heart, feeling more and more at ease. This was a normal thing with you two. It was comfortable and safe. Peter was your risk but he was also your safety net. "Really, y/n," Peter's chest rumbles with his words. "Thank you."

"I'll always be here for you. No matter what. You call and I'll be here." You promise. "Remember that time you got stuck upside down on my balcony? I missed a date to help you." You give a soft laugh and as does he, your eyes closing with the sound.

"It's not funny." He whines.

"Yes, it is. Spider-Man got stuck because he was too busy trying to show off." You glance up to him, smirking while he shakes his head, the cutest smile splitting his face.

"Remember that time you almost burned your kitchen down?"

"Not funny!" You both laugh remembering the time you both wanted to bake May cookies for her birthday but you got side-tracked as usual and the cookies were burned while smoke filled your apartment. Lucky for you, your parents were out for the day.

"Yeah, it was." Peter looks down to you, nostalgia filling his eyes.

Your laughs subside as a comfortable silence consumes the two of you. Your head falls with every beat of his heart and his thumb rubs circles over your shoulder. You were going to miss him more than anything in the world, more than you thought you could miss anything. You already missed him and he was with you. Tears begged to fill your eyes but you fought them off, not wanting to ruin the moment of stargazing.

Peter's heart ached as your arm wrapped around his torso just as you had done during the many, many movie nights you had over the years. He never wanted the night to end, or tomorrow to come. The moment needed to last forever, just the two of you beneath the stars and the moon, the city lights right off in the distance. To live in the moment would be a dream come true.

Peter's head shifts to look at you and you can't help but meet his gaze when it's longer than just his normal glance. His eyes are sad but filled with absolute and utter adornment just as yours did. Peter's eyes scan over your face as he leans forward just a little, the overwhelming feeling limerence taking over. Your breath hitches in your throat as you find yourself leaning into him just as slowly and hesitantly.

Your breath intertwined as the gap between you becomes almost nonexistent. Peter's nose brushes against yours as he cautiously presses his lips to yours as if waiting for you to tell him not to or to back away but, to his surprise, you kiss him back. Delicate, fragile, soft. Two hearts beating in sync with erupting butterflies in your stomachs. Something you both had longed for finally happened and it was breathtaking. The kind where your body physically forgets that it has to breath but your lips don't turn blue and your head doesn't spin. It's the good breathless, the stars aligning at just the right moment kind of breathtaking.

Peter is first to break the kiss, his eyes still closed as he finally lets out what should have been a needed breath. With you partially leaning on your arm, your forehead rests against his and his eyes flutter open slowly, admiration and contentment the only emotions drenching them.

"I-I, uh," Peter stumbles for words as he licks his lips. "I've wanted to do that for a long time." He admits.

"Me, too." You whisper, tempted to kiss him again but never break away.

"I was always hoping you did." Peter's breath remains ragged with his eyes locked with yours. You nod, your brain stalling and unable to find words. Your heart ached for him in the most pleasurable way. Peter places a hand on your cheek. "I'm gonna miss you."

"I'm gonna miss you, too." You lean into his touch with closed eyes.

"I'll come visit every weekend, I promise." Peter gives a timid smile as you open your eyes.

"And when you have to be Spider-Man, I'll come here. I promise." You bite your lip, trying to shield your cheek-aching smile knowing there would be plenty of weekends Peter would need to be Spider-Man and not make it. But it didn't matter because you're here and he's here and you wouldn't be a part for long. Your names were written in the stars together and you can't change fate.
