(1) Somewhere Only We Know

She walked down the road, rain pouring down over her. She sniffled, the cold air nipping at her ears. She had stumbled upon a path, branching off of the main road. On a normal day she would have passed this small trail, but on this particular day her senses were on point. The area was surrounded by bushes and large trees. A few branches leaning into the path made it almost invisible to the common passerby.

Deciding it was her best hope of finding a short cut home, or at least somewhere to hideout from the rain, she ducked out onto the stray path. She saw a large array of animals on the path. None of which she knew the name. The young girl came to a stop in the trail. She looked around for any signs of continuation. About 10 yards from where she stood was a tree house.

She didn't want to be rude, so she rang the small metal bell next to the ladder on the tree. "H-hello?" she stuttered out. What a nervous wreck she was that fateful day. When nobody answered she climbed the small ladder up to the entrance, glancing around for any sign of life. When she found it was empty, she crawled into a corner of the small tree house. She had curled up and fallen asleep in that corner.

When she awoke, the young girl was greeted by a pair of emerald eyes staring down at her with curiosity. When she had fully regained consciousness, she sat up, scooting away from the human before her. Taking a moment to study the creature, she noticed he had platinum blonde locks and astoundingly bright green eyes.

The young boy seemed about the same age, 9. He just sat there, staring at the girl. The two sat in silence for what felt like an eternity before the small boy's pitchy voice broke that silence.

"Who are you?" he had asked, tilting his head, giving her a jagged toothed grin.

"M-Mikayla." she whispered, still shy and confused. Where even was she? "Wh-who are you? Where are we?" she asked cautiously. The small boy held out a hand.

"I'm Devin O'Neil! We're in my tree house!" He almost shouted. Mikayla jumped at the booming sound of his voice. Little did she know, this introduction would lead to an unbreakable bond.

"Mikayla..." She heard a distant voice call out to her. "Mikayla...!" It called again. "Mickey!" A loud, deeper voice shouted, causing her to jump into consciousness. She looked up to see her mother and a blonde, she can only assume is Devin, at the edge of her bed.

"Get your ass out of bed, Mickey. Unless you want to be late for class again." He muttered the last part under his breath, but that didn't mean she didn't hear him.

The Ginger rolled over in her bed, not planning to get up. "Okay. I just won't go today." she spoke, her voice cracking here and there.

"Oh no, you don't." The blonde pulled the blanket off of Mikayla. The suns rays of light stinging her eyes as she hissed.

"If I'm suffering, so are you." He stated plainly, just as he had millions of times before. And just as before. Mikayla groaned sitting up in her bead.

"Fine, you've convinced me." She stood and walked to her closet, where she had hung her uniform. She grabbed the button up shirt, tie, and plaid skirt, walking into the restroom.

While dressing herself, she mumbled many a curse. Cursing Devon, her mother, the sun, the school system. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. She pulled her hair into a high ponytail that curled when it reached her waist, where the tresses ended. She washed her face and brushed her teeth, emerging from the restroom refreshed and ready to go.

She headed down the stairs to find Devin already eating breakfast, and her mother making coffee. Mikayla grabbed an apple and Devin's hand, heading towards the door, where she put on her high top shoes and a large green sweatshirt that almost swallowed her petite body. Taking a bite of the apple, she grabbed her bag and opened the door.

"Beh, Mahm!" she managed to mutter out with the chunk of apple still in her mouth. This had been their routine for 5 years. Devin came over, woke Mikayla, Mikayla got ready while Devin ate, they headed out to school, slacked off and goofed around, went to Devin's house, played video games and talked, watched movies, go to sleep. Repeat. This was her life. It was plain and Monotonous, but as long as Devin was around, she couldn't wish for anything more.
