Chapter 177

After Dumbledore gave Jenna strict orders and told her exactly what she was supposed to do and what things to avoid, Jenna finally bid him goodbye and left the shack.

He had given her one hour until the beginning of her mission.

So with her hands slightly trembling and her heart throbbing mercilessly, Jenna Disapparated out of the forest.

Once she appeared out of thin air and her feet hit the ground again, she looked up at James and Lily's house in Godric's Hollow.

She looked around her a few times to check whether she was being followed or not. When she made sure that she was alone in the village, she knocked at their door, but no one answered.

She knocked three more times, but right before she was about to do it a fourth time, she heard James's voice say harshly from behind the door, "Who is it?"

"A Death Eater who knocks politely at the door, waiting for you patiently to open it," Jenna said sarcastically, rolling her eyes.

Nothing happened.

"Oh, all right! It's Jenna Potter, also known as Crookshanks," she finally said in defeat.

Nothing.

Jenna huffed, saying, "Remus and Sirius are dicks."

James finally opened the door.

"Yeah, okay, it really is you," he said with a grin, moving aside so Jenna could step inside.

From behind him, Lily walked down the stairs, looking worriedly at Jenna with Harry in her arms who was crying. He had probably shot awake at the loud sound of knocking.

"Jen, what are you doing here? Do you have any idea what time it is?" said Lily apprehensively. "Is something wrong?"

"No, nothing's wrong." Jenna shook her head reassuringly. "I just came here to talk to James about Sirius. I'm sorry that I woke you up."

"Oh..." Lily sighed in relief that nothing horrible had happened, moving Harry in her arms to get him to sleep.

"You can take Harry upstairs," said Jenna. "I'll just speak with James."

"You sure?" Lily asked her kindly, but when Jenna gave her an earnest nod, she smiled and went back upstairs.

"Look, J.P," James started with a sigh when Lily disappeared out of sight, "I know you've got relationship problems with Padfoot, but couldn't it have waited till tomorrow? It's been a long night —"

"It's not about Sirius," Jenna whispered, cutting him off.

"What?" James frowned in confusion. "But you just said —"

Although he was broken off when Jenna took out her wand, casting a spell around the living room to prevent them from being overhead.

"There's — there're something I need to tell you," she said hesitantly. "But you have to promise not to tell anyone. Not even Lily or Sirius."

"But —"

"Will you give me your word?"

James looked hesitant at first, but he sighed at last and nodded. "You have my word."

Jenna then took out her coat and sat down on the couch, her mind racing and her heart still beating fast as she kept remembering Alecto Carrow in her head.

"Look..." Jenna started as James sat down beside her on the couch. "Something's going to happen — I wanted to tell this to Sirius, but we've been having problems lately — and I trust you with my life —"

"Get to the point, J.P! You're killing me here!" he exclaimed, worry washed all over his face.

"All right, all right," said Jenna, still avoiding his gaze, until she finally blurted out, "Dumbledore is going to send me on a mission."

"What kind of mission?" James questioned.

He seemed a little more relaxed, although that was probably because he thought it was just like any other little mission of the Order.

"I'm going away, James. For a long time," Jenna said and at the anxious expression on her face, his brother became worried for her again.

"But... where? What's the mission?" he questioned urgently.

"Dumbledore — he's asked me something — actually it had been planned out ever since our fifth year —"

"Jenna, I swear you're scaring the living hell out of me," James said impatiently.

"It all started when Dumbledore figured out that my Metamorphic abilities were advanced; stronger and more powerful than any witch or wizard my age or even older," Jenna started to explain. "So he asked me if I was willing to go undercover as a Death Eater... and I agreed."

James gaped at her in disbelief, as if he was waiting for her to shout 'April Fools!', but Jenna remained quiet.

"So you're being sent on a mission soon?" he asked, still not believing his ears. "When?"

"Tonight."

"Tonight!?" James exclaimed. "But — for how long?"

"For as long as I can keep it a secret and I'm safe there," she answered. "But you can't tell anyone, James."

"What about Sirius, then!? You can't just disappear without an explanation!"

"He knows a bit of it. I'm sure he'll understand."

"Who are you going to impersonate?" he asked more quietly.

"Does it matter?"

"Yes." James nodded, now grinning playfully. "What if we get into a duel and I attack you, not knowing who you are?"

"All right," Jenna smiled lightly. With that, she closed her eyes and focused, transforming herself.

"Alecto Carrow!?" James exclaimed again, looking disgusted. "But she's one of the horrible ones from what I've heard of her!"

"Good, because that means she'd be closer to Voldemort." She smirked.

"I can't believe this..." James said in a hollow voice.

A long silence followed those words as James laid back on the couch, staring into the flames with wide eyes.

"I'll miss you, J.P," Jenna whispered after a long pause.

But James couldn't get himself to answer her. So he just leaned in, bringing her into a hug that spoke for itself. They just held onto one another for long seconds in silence, none of them being able to utter a word.

"Okay," said James, finally pulling away with a sniff, forcing a little grin, "now get out of my house before I start crying."

Jenna had no idea how she was supposed to say goodbye to Sirius. She still had twenty minutes before she had to leave for good. But she spent half of it waiting at the doorstep of their house, trying to decide what she was going to tell him.

So at last she finally opened their flat's door, walking inside. At first she had planned on waking Sirius up, perhaps with a light kiss.

But when she stepped into their bedroom she realized that he was still awake, because at the sound of her footstep, he immediately turned his back on her on the bed.

"Sirius?" Jenna called him softly, but he didn't answer and kept his eyes closed. "I know you're awake."

Still no response.

Jenna sighed, finally saying, "It's time for me to leave."

Sirius remained silent, his back to her as he was laying down on the bed.

"Look... I — I just want you to know that you're the only one I love," she said, feeling her vision go blurry with tears. "And I'll always love you, no matter what happens."

Silence.

So Jenna just sighed, walking toward the bed and placing a light kiss on his cheek before pulling away.

"This is not a goodbye," she whispered.

With that, Jenna took out her engagement ring and gently placed it on the nightstand, leaving the bedroom before she could burst into tears.

Sirius laid there in the silence of the room, wondering about Jenna's words. Did he really mess up so bad that she had to leave him? But where was she planning on going? Lily and James's house?

But Sirius suddenly shot up when he realized what she meant. It was her mission. His eyes widened when he saw her ring on the nightstand.

"No, no, no..." he muttered under his breath in horror as he picked up the ring urgently and ran out of the house. "Jenna! JENNA!"

But it was too late. She was gone.
