Come On Eileen (.9)

"This Saturday night, mostly clear, with some scattered clouds. Lows in the upper forties."

Doc glanced back from the radio as he finished tying a wire to a light pole. "Are you sure about this storm?"

"When could weathermen predict the weather?" Marty joked.

"Let alone the future," Tessa added.

"You know kids, I'm gonna be very sad to see you go. You've really made a difference in my life; you've given me something to shoot for," Doc told them as he started walking down the sidewalk of the park.

Doc was so absorbed in his speech that he didn't notice that he accidentally hit Marty in the head tossing his coat to him.

"Just knowing, that I'm gonna be around to see 1985, that I'm gonna succeed in this. That I'm gonna have a chance to travel through time. It's gonna be really hard waiting 30 years before I could talk to you about everything that's happened in the past few days." Doc told them with a focused look in his eyes. "I'm really gonna miss the two of you."

The both of them started shifting around nervously.

"Well, at least, it's not forever," Tessa said with a forced smile.

"Listen Doc, about the future-" Marty stepped forward.

"No, Marty!" Doc straightened his back. "We've already agreed that having information about the future could be extremely dangerous. Even if your intentions are good, they could backfire drastically. Whatever you've got to tell me I'll find out through the natural course of time."

Tessa and Marty looked at each other. Hoping the other had the answer to all this. The guilt loomed over them like the oncoming storm. They ended up giving Doc some kind of excuse about wanting to get something to eat and retreated to the diner.

"What are we gonna do," Tessa sighed as she rubbed her eyes. "We can't just... let it happen."

Tessa blamed herself. If she had just kept her mouth shut about Johnny. None of this would have happened. Nobody in town would have hated her guts, no one would have confronted the three of them in the parking lot.

"This is all my fault," Tessa claimed as she paced back and forth.

"That's not true," Marty tried to tell her.

"But it is!" Tessa argued. "If I had never told anyone about Johnny and that other girl, he never would have followed us to that parking lot."

Marty and Tessa stared at each other. Marty scrunched up his nose in thought. "I don't think so, but... we can fix this. If we just convince him to listen."

"You remember who we're talking about, right?" Tessa gave a defeated smile.

"Listen, there is so much all of us could have done, but we've literally changed time. Why don't we just change this one small thing?"

Tessa looked down at Marty. He was giving her such an earnest look and she wanted to trust him so badly. "Okay... okay. What were you thinking?"

Marty got Tessa to sit next to him in the booth as he started scribbling on a piece of paper. Huffing in frustration now and again when he kept spilling ink on his fingers with the old-fashioned pen.

"Dear Doctor Brown," Marty read the letter out for Tessa. "On the night that I go back in time, you will be shot by someone looking for Tessa. Please take whatever precautions are necessary to prevent this terrible disaster. Your friend, Marty."

"It's good," Tessa mumbled. She handed Marty an envelope and he wrote not to open the letter until 1985. "Hopefully his curiosity gets the better of him."

Back outside Doc was busy showing a permit to a cop. Tessa took the opportunity to slip the letter into his discarded coat by the car.

It was the point in the night when Marty and Tessa were gonna split up. With Marty taking the car to pick up Lorraine, and Tessa heading to George's house to make sure he stayed on track.

Tessa could have sworn Georgie's dad looked like his eyes were gonna pop out of his head at the sight of Tessa arriving on the McFly doorstep. It was actually kinda funny.

The setup for the dance was intense. While Tessa didn't think her mother was not gonna put in a good effort, it was a committed effort. The gym had been decorated head to toe in sea-themed coral statues and ribbons. While a live band played from the stage all the students twisted and turned turned in the brightly coloured dresses. There was even a bubble machine.

Tessa and George stood towards the back of the room. Tessa had her arms crossed and George was bouncing along to the music.

"Do you wanna dance?"

Tessa tilted her head towards him and gave him an incredulous look. "...No."

Another song finished up and Tessa let out a tired huff. It had to be getting close, right?

"What do you think you're doing!?" A familiar voice rang out from nearby.

Tessa's head snapped around to see Eileen standing by the drinks table and yelling at James and the rest of Biff's gang. Tessa started stomping towards them. "I'll be back in a minute."

"But what about-" George tried saying with a quivering lip.

"Dammit, George!" Tessa hissed. "Step up for once!"

Tessa continued making her way to the table. Overhearing James trying to hush Elieen. "Keep it, down. Strickland is right there."

"Good! I can't believe you're trying to ruin this night!"

"Oh please, it's just a bit of booze," James rolled his eyes. "Could you just not be a nag for once."

"I am not-" Elieen tried to argue as James pulled her away from the table.

"You are," James placed his hands on her shoulders. "You've hurt me enough with that strunt you pulled Fred kid. Can't you just let me have some fun with my bu-"

"Hey!" Tessa cut between them. Sneering up at James in warning.

"Oh, you again," James grumbled.

Eileen suddenly let out a sob and ran out of the gym. Tessa chased after her and spared another dirty at James before she did. He just shrugged and made his way back to Biff and the goons.

"Eileen? Eileen, wait!" Tessa chased her eventual mother down the hall.

"Why does he have to spoil everything!?" Eileen cried. More to herself rather than Tessa.

"Hey hey hey," Tessa rushed over and stepped in front of her. "Just take a minute and we can sort something out."

"I don't wanna do anything! I don't wanna go back," Eileen continued to cry and moved past Tessa towards the bathroom door. "I just wanna sit down and cry."

Tessa stepped in front of the door. "Let's just... head outside and get some fresh air, okay?"

Eileen thought about it for a moment. She wiped her nose with the back of her hand and slowly nodded.

Tessa tried to give her a comforting smile. She roped her arm over Eileen's shoulders and guided her outside. "It will be nicer than the bathroom, trust me."

Eileen let out a small laugh at that.

They sat down on the steps once they were inside. Eileen took a deep and sighed.

"Feeling better?" Tessa asked.

"... No, but it will be fine. I'm just so sick and tired of James, and his," Eileen gestured vaguely in frustration. "Just sick of it in general."

Tessa looked out across the parking lot. Frowing at herself. "I'm sorry I don't do more."

"You have no reason to be sorry," Eileen told her.

"I dunno. I feel like I just made it worse," Tessa fiddled with the skirt of the dress.

"No, it's not you," Eileen shook her head. "I don't speak up for myself enough. I let James walk over me all the time."

"Can I be real with you?" Tessa asked.

"What? You seem pretty real already," Eileen tried to joke through the sniffles.

"I mean, can I be honest with you?" Tessa rephased.

"Sure," Eileen nodded.

"It's not your fault either," Tessa turned to look her in the eyes. "He's the problem. He's the one who's always breaking his promises. And I know you wanna give him some kind of pass, but you really don't have to."

Eileen was quiet for a second. "I've known him for so long. He used to be so nice, but this past year he just keeps doing things that get on my nerves, and when I try to say something... he always makes me feel so guilty."

Tessa couldn't think of what to say. She just held her hand out to comfort Eileen. She took it but had started to tear up again.

"What do you wanna do with your life? Like, forget James. If you could do anything in the future what would you do?"

Eileen hummed. "I guess... I'd like to become a doctor."

"Do you have a certain type in mind?"

"Just general practitioner would be real neat," Eileen grinned at the thought. "Helping people and learning new things, you know?"

"That sounds awesome!" Tessa grinned back.

Eileen let out a giggle. "It's so strange... I only met you a few days ago, but it somehow feels like I've known you forever. You just seem so familiar."

Tessa let out a nervous bark. "Well, I... you're, I've been told I'm easy to talk to."

"They're right," Eileen smiled. She slapped her hands down on her knees and looked around. Her eyes landed on the band who seemed to be taking a smoke break. "Hey, follow me."

Before Tessa could say anything Eileen grabbed her arm and dragged away from the stairs.

"Would you gentlemen be willing to give us a light?" Eileen asked the band as she walked down the stairs.

Tessa gawked at her mother's straightforwardness. The men blinked in surprise. One of them moved forward and passed each of the girls a cigarette and held up a lighter for them.

"Much appreciated," Eileen smiled.

Tessa continued standing there with a shocked look. She was smoking... with her mother.

"Enjoying the night, Miss Brown?" One of them asked.

"The music has been amazing, thank you, Marvin," Eileen smiled as she shook his hand.

Tessa was smoking weed with her mother, after sneaking out of a school dance. And with weed given to them by total strangers.

"Oh my god," Tessa stared dead ahead as she took a drag from the cigarette and immediately started coughing.

"Want some advice?" One of them asked.

"Um, sure?" Tessa wheezed.

"Quit while you're ahead," The man smirked. Causing the rest of the band to cuckle.

The two of them ended up making small talk with the men for a little bit. Eileen complimented them for their good music and exclaimed she was sure she had made the right choice in picking them. They seemed to be enjoying the praise.

"What about you?" Eileen suddenly asked. "What do you wanna do after high school?"

Tessa blinked. She wasn't ready for that kind of question. "Oh god, I dunno."

"Maybe you could become a doctor too?" Eileen exclaimed.

Tessa laughed. "I don't think I'm cut out for a job where I have peoples' lives in my hands."

"Well, you don't have to be a medical doctor," Eileen pointed out.

"You could be," The drummer of the band, Reginald, cut in and started clicking his fingers trying to remember the word. "Marine scientist!"

"Huh, maybe?" Tessa mused. "I do like collecting sea shells."

"You could be a Geologist-"

Tessa couldn't help but howl in laughter. "That actually sounds pretty sick."

"Sick?"

Before anyone could make another suggestion there was a sudden ruckus coming from the back of the car.

"That's for messing up my hair!" Someone shouted and the back trunk slammed close.

Reginald rushed to the back of the car. Finding Biff's goons messing around. "The hell you doin' to my car!?"

"Hey beat it, spook, this don't concern you!" 3-D glasses pointed a finger at him.

"Who are you callin' spook, peckerwood?" Marvin frowned as everyone else came around the car with pissed-off looks on their faces.

"Hey, hey listen, guys," The three of them started to back away. "Look, I don't wanna mess with no reefer addicts, okay?"

One of the band members gave the short-haired goon a shove. Making all three of them run away in a panic.

"Honestly," Eileen huffed in disappointment as she watched them run. A few of the other bandmates chased after them to make sure they hadn't taken anything from the trunk.

Tessa was gonna say something but paused when she heard a knocking coming from the truck.

"C'mon, open up, let me out of here, Yo!" A voice yelled.

"Marty!" Tessa gasped.

"Tessa! Oh, thank god!" Marty replied.

Marvin had started trying to jiggle the trunk open. "Reginald, where're your keys?"

Reginald reached into his pocket but stopped when Marty said something else.

"The keys are in the trunk!"

Tessa let out a sigh as Marvin took the smoke out of his mouth. "Say that again."

"I said the keys are in here!"

Eileen started running back towards the school. "Hold on! I'll if I can get anything to jiggle the lanch open!"

Tessa started pacing back and forth. "What the hell happened?"

"Biff happened!" Marty shouted. "Turns out he's kinda pissed about the car slamming into a pile shit!"

"What the hell are these two talkin' about?" Reginald asked with his arms crossed. Marvin just shrugged.

"This should work!" Eileen waved a screwdriver above her head as she ran back towards them. She huffed in exhaustion as she passed it to Marvin.

The singer started jamming the tool into the lock of the truck. Moving it around. "Give me a hand with this, Reginald. AH!"

Marvin suddenly let out a sharp shout. He had managed to unlock the truck, but the screw had slipped through his hand.

"Are you alright?" Eileen rushed forward to check his hand.

"Damnit, man, I sliced my hand," Marvin hissed.

Marty jumped out of the truck and looked around wildly. Flashing the keys at everyone. "Who's are these?"

Reginald raised a hand and Marty tossed the keys to him. He grabbed Tessa's hand and started running back to the parking lot.

"Do you have a first aid kit?" Eileen asked Reginald. He nodded and started digging through the back of the car.

"Where's Biff?" Tessa asked as she got dragged along. Realising she hadn't seen him with the others moments before.

"We gotta stop-" Marty started to say before making a sudden stop just as they reached the parking lot.

Marty and Tessa stood there frozen in shock as they watched Georgie punch Biff square in the face. Biff slammed into the car and slowly slumped to the ground with a bloody nose.

"Holy shit," Tessa muttered.

George let out a surprised laugh as he looked from Biff to his hand. He cleared his throat as he looked at Lorraine. Who was on the ground. Looking up at George with awe in her eyes.

"Are you okay?" George asked as he held out his hand to help her up.

Lorraine couldn't seem to take her eyes off George as he lifted her back up. A fond smile formed on her face as the two of them walked off, arm in arm.

Tessa and Marty continued watching. They could hardly believe what they just saw. Tessa's hand was gripped losing around Marty's arm. Once George and Lorraine were out of sight Marty pulled the family picture out of his pocket. He let out a sigh of relief at the sight of his sister slowly starting to reappear.

The two of them rushed back to the car. Eileen was in the middle of wrapping a bandage around Marvin's hand as Marty barreled towards them.

"Hey guys! You gotta get back in there and finish the dance!"

"I'm not sure that's a good idea," Eileen frowned at Marty like an annoyed parent.

"Why? What's wrong?" Tessa asked as she tried to regain her breath.

"Look at Marvin's hand, kid," Reginald nodded his hand towards Marvin. "He can't play with his hands like that, and we can't play without him."

"Yeah, well look, Marvin," Marty pushed by everyone with a desperate look in his eyes. "Marvin, you gotta play. See that's where they kiss for the first time on the dance floor. And if there's no music, they can't dance, and if they can't dance, they can't kiss, and if they can't kiss, they can't fall in love and I'm history."

"What is he going on about?" Eileen questioned as she placed her hands on her hips. Reginald just threw his hands in the air and shrugged.

"Hey man, the dance is over," Marvin shook his head. "Unless you know someone else who can play the guitar."

"I do!" Tessa shouted.
