Behind the Scenes
A/N
Guess who binge-watched Hermitcraft instead of working on this story? And guess who also had to do some research which totally did not involve watching a ton of videos to help me writing my interpretation of Matt?
"Uh, Matt? We've got a problem,"
Matt looked up from his laptop with the sound of Uni's voice. What was going on? Did they need his help? Would he have to intervene?
He would be lying if he said that he didn't want to go out on the field. The little things, like helping his team hack into security systems, which in itself was rare because of Dawn, brought some joy to him, but his curiosity in the field was unending.
Ashlie had described it to him like a rush of adrenaline suddenly slapping you in the face. His area of work was more of your boss slapping you in the face. He messed more times than he could count trying to get in the field somehow. It wasn't that he hated being an informant, it just wasn't really as interesting as the field was.
"Am I missing something cool?" he asked into the microphone. He silently hoped they would need him outside of information. Matt pulled strings, he wasn't the one who needs those string to be pulled. He knew heroing was tough work, but it looked like it could be more exciting.
"No, but you know Fool's Gold, right?"
"Uh, yeah? I'm literally the guy who tells you everything about him," Matt knew more about that villain than he told his team. He knew many things about Fool's Gold, but not enough to truly know who he was. He did research on all of the villains he had during his off-time, which really paid off.
"He's targeting this one civil- WATCH OUT WATCH OUT-" Uni was cut off by a loud crash and a few sickening cracks later, Matt could hear Uni's telekinesis humming.
"SIXTH, WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?" That was unmistakably Ashlie. She sounded exhausted, her voice trailing away towards the end of the sentence. Either that, or she was flying. Probably both.
"I'm helping! Spark!" At this point, Matt was fully invested in their conversation. What were they doing? What was going on? There was electricity crackling before the transmission completely cut out, a quick "I'm sorry" from Dawn squeezing through. He must've short-circuited the earpiece again.
From what he picked up, Fool's Gold was targeting a civilian. Matt returned to his laptop, quickly pulling up his tab on the villain.
He had theorized many things about the villain and he kept most of it in his laptop. He guessed that Fool's Gold was a twenty to twenty-eight-year-old man. The supervillain looked to be about six feet tall, if maybe a bit taller. Weight was always tricky, so Matt usually never thought of it. However, he knew that Fool's Gold hair was naturally green, although he couldn't tell the length of it. It looked on the shorter side, but he could always have his hair up underneath his jester hat. His eyes were either purple or navy blue from the photos Matt had where pieces of his oddly marked mask had chipped off.
He seemed to know his opponent's every move, specifically Ashlie's, but this always seemed to fade away. One second he would be dodging all of her attacks, the next he would be running for his life. That amulet he wore had something to do with his powers. Matt speculated that it was the source of his power, seeing how it glowed ominously. But it could also just be a fancy knickknack; it being most likely the latter.
"Okay, okay. Back to what I was saying," Uni's voice returned, this time from Ashlie's earpiece. "He's targeting this one civilian. Haven't asked for his name yet, but looks pretty average," He needed more details to do something.
"I need to know the details," he informed.
"I don't know how to explain him! He's like really short and wears glasses. Average looking black hair and a short beard,"
"Great to know you're defending five percent of the male population. Doesn't seem too special, but maybe you should take him with ya,"
"I'm sorry, what?"
"Bring him over. It's not like we're going to play Truth or Dare with him and tell him our deepest darkest secrets,"
"But he'll know who-"
"Just trust me, okay? I've got this covered and I swear I won't mess up and 'accidentally' wipe a visitor's memories like the last time," Uni chuckled nervously before clicking off Ashlie's earpiece. Matt turned back to his laptop.
He needed to talk to that civilian.
