book reccomendations

Hi! Are you bored? I'm bored. So I'm gonna ramble about books you should read, not that you care or should care, but y'know. So if you're bored, read away. If not, go do something productive with your life! Read a book!

BOOKS

10 - Slade House by David Mitchell

It's a fairly short book, no more than 250ish pages. I recommend it for anyone who wants a quick and compelling read, or something that will confuse them into oblivion and then spit them back out dizzy and blinking hard XD. Enjoy!

9 - Vanishing Acts by Jodi Picoult

I finished this book in a span of about six hours. I didn't want to put it down, and when it was over, I didn't know what else to do with my life. The book centers around lies and how one leads to another until nothing is really true . . . by far, my favorite Jodi Picoult book.

8 - The Hours by Michael Cunningham

Well, this book won the Pulitzer, so don't just take my word for it. It's pretty much a classic. If you haven't yet, I recommend that you read this book, especially if you're a writer. If you write, you'll appreciate it that much more. The story is split into three different points of view, all of which are intertwined in unexpected ways.

7 - A Spool Of Blue Thread by Anne Taylor

I didn't realize how much I loved this book until it was over. Anne Tyler is an awesome author because she doesn't distract the reader from the story with fancy language or anything. Instead, she pulls you in and doesn't let go. I think anyone who likes to read or write stories centered around grief or family should give this book a read.

6 - Room by Emma Donoghue
If you want a tear jerker, here's a good one. A lot of authors have tried to write from the perspective of a child, but Emma Donoghue does it more successfully than most. In the book, a little boy named Jack tells the story of Room, the place where he grew up isolated from the rest of the world. It's a really fascinating read.

5 - The Hour I First Believed by Wally Lamb

This book is one for boring weeks in the middle of summer when you've got nothing going on. It's close to 800 pages, but you won't want it to end. Wally Lamb is one of my favorite authors, and one thing I love about all his books is how seamlessly he shifts from one plot line to another. In this book, he does just that. Read it!

4 - The Deep End Of The Ocean by Jacqueline Mitchard
I wasn't too sure about this one when I started it, but it really grew on me. The story is about a mother and her struggle after the disappearance of her son, Ben. It really makes you think about what family really is.

3 - Eva by Peter Dickinson
Ok, this one is a little weird. My sister freaks out if I talk about it because she read the first five pages and got freaked out. Basically, Eva was in a car accident and the only way to save her was to transport her brain into another body . . . but not a human body. It's freaky, I'll admit, but once you get over the initial skin-crawlingness, you'll love it. Trust me.

2 - Boy, Snow, Bird by Helen Oyeyemi
This one is a "modern" take on the fairy tale Snow White. I say "modern" because it's set in the 1950's and 60's. It is quite modern though, because it deals with issues such as race relations and gender identity. Boy is the name of the "Evil Stepmother", Snow is the "Snow White" character, and Bird is Boy's daughter who exposes Snow and her family as African Americans pretending to be white in a time when segregation is in full throttle down South. Even if you don't think this is your kind of book, I think you should read it. It'll make you think.

1 - She's Come Undone by Wally Lamb

I personally think this novel should be required reading for the whole world. That's all. It really affected me and I think you'll find it profound as well.

That's it. Go, children! Read your little hearts out!
