Chapter Twenty One

"This is amazing! I can't believe that you girls found it!" Mum was so happy and she seemed relieved.
"Isn't it great! Now we finally know our magical history. Mum I'm....." I suddenly realised what Mum said and my face dropped. Slowly turning into a suspicious glare. I turned to Lucy and saw that she had the same look on her face.
"Mum..." I started slowly.
" Yes, Dear?" She didn't even look up from the letter. She was so mesmerized by the letter that she didn't even notice our suspicious looks or bothered to read our minds.
"Mum....did you know about this letter?" I asked slowly. She looked up and realised what I just asked. Her face turned bright red and she had a guilty look on her face.
" I'll take that as a yes." Lucy said nonchalantly.

" Girls, I always knew about this letter. In fact, Lucy, your mother and I both did." She finally said something after what felt like ages of silence.
"My mother knew about it too?" I could see that Lucy had mixed emotions about this. She looked happy about the thought that she finally knows about something that she and her mother has in common. Since her mother died during giving birth to her, Lucy doesn't know anything about her. Although she knows that her mum and mine were best friends she never had the courage to ask about her.
I could see the sadness in Lucy's eyes caused by the pain she feels. It's always been hard for her, knowing that she will never be able to know her mother.

"Your mother and I heard the legend about the letters from your grandmother, Lucy." Mum said after realising what Lucy was thinking about. Lucy's eyes quickly lit up.
"You mean to say that there is more than one?" Lucy asked with enthusiasm.
"Indeed. There are three letters to be exact. Each letter reveals a little more." Mum looked suprised, yet happy with the sudden change in Lucy's emotions.
"A little more of what?" I asked curiously.
"Lucy's grandmother said that there are three letters but not in total. There are a lot of copies of the first one. Each one of them was hidden with the same riddle: You will find it near the living but equally as near to the death. Your mother and I, Lucy, devoted most of our lives to finding at least one of these letters but neither of us could solve the riddle.
" It looks like the two of you did that for us. The family histories' books is about the previous people that lived and us, meaning the living. It makes so much sense now!
" Anyway, back to my point. As I said: there are a lot of copies of the first one but there is only one of each of the last two letters."

Lucy and I looked at each other, confused. We were clearly thinking the same thing.
'Are you going to ask her or should I?' I asked Lucy telepathically. Lucy signalled to me that she would and I nodded.
"Why is the last two letters so important?" We both waited anxiously for the answer.
"According to your grandmother, if you have al three letters you have the key to wiping out all of the existing Drakoni."

Just as I started to become excited about this news I saw that Mum's face turned dark. This can only mean one thing: there is more to this legend than what she had told us.

"Mum, why does this news not make you happy. We have no reason to be afraid, as long as we find these letters." She slowly turned to me.
" Raven, on the bottom of each letter is symbols. If these symbols are put together you have the most dangerous spell even known to our kind. Yes, it can be used to wipe out all remaining Drakoni but in their hands it can be used to wipe out all existing Valkyries. The reason why your great grandmother, Raven, did not use this spell was because the Drakoni found out about it. They hunted her and her children for years. Each time she tried to use the spell, she was interrupted by them. She wrote three letters and devided the spell between them. She gave a copy of the first one to each of her children and told them where to put it. The last two letters she hid on her own.
"With each letter there was a clue as to where the next one was. I don't believe that you gave me one?"

Lucy and I looked at each other confused. Suddenly I saw a flicker of light in her eyes as understanding crept over her face. She reached out to her pocket and pulled out the photo that was attached to the letter.

Mum's eyes lit up as she accepted the letter from Lucy's outstretched hand.

The photo was old with only shades of black and white colouring it. In the photo stood five woman - all of which dressed in armor and holding a weapon. In the middle stood a radiant woman with hair as black as night and beautiful blue wings that stretched behind the other women.

" That must be your great great grandmother, Raven." Lucy exclaimed barely hiding her joy.

" It seems so." Mum said but her brows furrowed. "Look! There is something written on the back of the photo!" We all started reading anxiously.

I could feel the excitement running through my body like it is trying to race against my pumping blood. We found the next clue...
