Chapter Seventeen
The Unicorn LGBTQ+ Club (The Unicorn for short) was not as big like the other clubs on campus. It was true that the most popular club were Rowing, Dance, and Taiko Drumming. But the Unicorn had had many different members over the years and rose and fell in popularity. Still the noble Unicorn served as a refuse for students as they needed it. It was housed in a nice little section of the student center. It had a, of course, like the other parts of the school brilliant colors all around. The only thing was there were numerous black ribbons tie to the windows and walls. So the usually lively Unicorn was a little mute. There was the hangout area, the library, and the main office. Usually the main officers were found about the Unicorn at different times of the day.
Today R.J. had a glass of milk in his hand as he stood at the edge of the porch. He walked along with his cane in hand as he counted the steps over his comfy chair. He wore a blank ribbon around his arm. He watched as the rain fell out on the canvas that Peppermint had put outside. He combed back in blonde hair with one hand as he pulled out his laptop. His photos for class needed editing. He flickered through the one from the dorm party from just a few weeks ago. He lingered on the photo of a slightly older woman around Kid. He narrowed his eyes on it for a moment as he next to the one. It seemed like Olivia had popped over. Kid's face was upset. R.J. was going to pay it more mind, but lost his focus with the footsteps of Peppermint.
Peppermint walked by with their pencil in their mouth as their white dress fluttered about. Peppermint drummed their fingers with a chart on the chalkboard. They had a black ribbon around their arm. They were writing out a poster design for the memorial of Olivia. They brushed back their green hair as they sighed, "I am not dreaming. . . It really did happen, right?"
"Hmm, I cannot say it didn't happen. We saw them one moment and the next one they were gone," R.J. somberly answered.
Peppermint said to R.J., "Do you think we should hold it this Saturday?"
"Better soon than later. . . It is bloody mess," R.J. said as he placed his glass on a nearby table. It made a loud click sound.
Peppermint uncrossed their arms, "August suggested we do a prayer circle for Olivia and Kid. We can pray for Olivia and the safe return of Kid."
"Look, Pep, I don't want to argue about the way it is done. We can go traditional or non-traditional. We can use whatever media. I just want to have something for our friends. . . After all the funeral is being a closed one to family only," R.J. scrolled through his photos again and started to think.
"I just. . . I want to make sure we are doing it right."
"I . . . I don't know, Pep," R.J. replied, "For all the media coverage about Olivia and the murder. . . Kid gone, too. . . We haven't exactly been receiving positive feedback here. There have been articles about this being a hate crime."
". . ." Peppermint shook their head as they paced. The rain at a steady beat falling. Peppermint turned their head back to the canvas outside and observed it. They sighed, "I don't really want to talk to anyone else about what happened. The media is making a circus of it."
"Hmm," R.J. wordless answered as he went back to his photo.
It was then at Walus came. Walus had changed back to his usual flashy brilliant green raincoat and his favorite violet hat. On his arm he finally up on a black armband in memory of Yankee. The detective walked up the door and opened it slowly. It was true that he had received orders from Chief Vicky. To take in all the current reports as they came in. He was supposed to be doing that. He was. He had a whole silent alert system in play. There were plenty of leads to follow. But he knew where the basic one was to begin with. He got a lawyer for Edwin, Lucy Gates, one of the best Walus knew. It was better to be ready for anything rather than see where this weird plot was headed. Not to mention, Walus would have to see how all the Dark Shadow fitted into the mystery. That appointment was not due until sunset. He would have to head over to the meeting point.
For now Walus was here at the Unicorn. Walus reflected to himself that the Dark Shadows had Miss Caroline. They must have some grand scheme they did not feel like sharing with him as he went through all the trouble of following them back her. But Walus had a hunch on why the Dark Shadow took Miss Caroline. As for the Kid Marshal case, he would have to continue on his brother's leads. Walus pulled out his badge and said to them, "Good day, I am Walus Knight. I am a consulting detective with the Watts City Police Force. I am here on the case involving Olivia and Kid Marshal. I have come to speak with you about any information about the case."
"My name is Richard Jinkins Elmore. But everyone else calls me R.J." He said as he lowered his camera and nodded.
"Good day, my name is Peppermint," They shook hands with Walus. They went over to R.J. and whispered into his ear, "I have heard about this guy from the news. I think he just did something really important."
"You got me. I have been too sick of newsfeed since yesterday!" R.J. sighed.
Walus pulled out a notepad from his pocket and meekly smiled at them. Then he coughed and said, "May I please ask you a couple questions about the case?"
R.J. stared at Walus, "Okay. . .We understand you need to talk to us. But another police officer came by earlier. Do you need to ask us about everything again?"
"Was his name Detective Scott?" Walus held his pen still for a moment. He dared not to ask about Edwin considering his situation with the case at the moment.
"I think it was Detective Scott, but he didn't ask us a lot of questions," Peppermint said.
R.J. added, "He just asked if we had seen her recently and if we knew anywhere she had been going."
"Like anything unusual about her behavior," Peppermint shook her head, "She was just as busy as normal. Nothing strange about that for Kid. Her room is always a mess with all her projects and homework."
"Hmm," Walus paused to think about what he saw on the drone. He said, "Well, I wish to expand upon Detective Scott's questioning. It is very important I speak with you at this time."
Peppermint nodded slowly, "Anything you need. I will do anything to help if it helps get our friend back."
"And make the bastard who hurt Olivia pay!" R.J. frowned and shook his hand.
Walus caught a glance at the camera and made a note in his mind to ask about it in a moment. He started with, "I have been led to some strange reports that the student dorms were closed for a period of time due to termites. But no official records exist about it. Was it possible that someone did it as a joke?"
"No, the dorms were never closed," Peppermint folded her arms, "Plus I live in the dorms across from Kid and Olivia. No one put in the time to make such a prank."
"I see. . ." Walus wrote on his notepad as he tried to recall what else Edwin claimed. He asked, "Were there any protests on campus two days ago? A witness has claimed that Kid was arrested by people dressed as officers in the area at that time. But other evidence has Kid located in the student dorms and the docks."
"There was no protest for this month," R.J. held his camera as he in thought.
Peppermint went over to the side of the room where a calendar of events was posted. They read it carefully and remarked, "It is supposed to happen next month so we can save the whales. Right?"
"Yea," R.J. nodded.
"On the record logs, it was shown that on the night of their disappearance there was a dorm party. Is this correct?"
Peppermint nodded, "Yes we had a party. The Unicorn had decided to throw the party here on campus to get school spirit up. Everyone was bumming out because of finals weeks. It was just supposed to be a night to blow off some steam."
R.J. held his camera in his hand and stared down at the screen. He remarked, "Olivia was in charge of the DJ and the music. She did such a killer job it was hard to not hear the music all night all."
Walus wrote down what they were saying. He then asked, "It was reported by another eye witness that Olivia and Kid got into a fight at the party. Would either of you know the reason for the fight?"
R.J. held up his camera for Walus to see. He pointed to it, "The girls had a fight together. I don't remember what started it. But I can tell you I got them on my camera. Here look."
"Who is the smaller man right here?" Walus pointed to a dwarf.
"Oh that is Teddy. He is Olivia's boyfriend," R.J. said and looked away, "He has been taking this whole affair really badly. He won't talk to anyone right now. I feel like I have been calling him tons and never get through."
Peppermint leaned over and frowned, "I heard part of it. It seemed like Kid had borrowed Olivia's camera and hadn't returned it yet. But Kid promised to have it back before the end of the month. She needed it for a project she was working on. Olivia wanted it that very night."
"What project was Kid working on? And you said she is normally a messy person. . . The police photos of the room showed it to be neat and tidy," Walus pulled up the photos of Kid's room to show them.
"That's not right at all. Kid never really cleaned her room," Peppermint pointed to the image, "Her project was something to do with journalism. Like a fieldwork piece. Kid had been on the project for the several weeks. We haven't really seen her since she was so busy."
"Do either of you know happened to them after the argument?"
R.J. answered, "I know that Kid left early in order to keep working on her project. Olivia stood down stairs for more drinks."
"I remember that she was really mad. I think Teddy could tell you more about where Olivia headed next. He came back to the party shortly after. He was super mad the rest of the night," Peppermint said.
"Do either of you know where this went off too? And what does he look like? This photo is very blurry," Walus pointed to the short man in the image.
"It is amazing how Teddy has been spared from all the questions," R.J. sighed.
"Well . . . Teddy was our D.J. for the night. So he couldn't have gone anywhere else. He refused to leave the party until the very end. He kept the music flowing!" Peppermint sat down on a chair finally.
Walus scribbled away on his notes. He repeated, "What does he look like again?"
"He is rather short, basically a dwarf," R.J. muttered as he allowed Walus to get a closer look at the photos.
"I will have to take this image for evidence. Can you send me a copy?" Walus paused with his pen in hand.
"Yes, I can," R.J. got up and went over to the copier in the back of the office. He hooked up his camera and pressed on the button. It copied the image. R.J. returned to Walus and handed him the copy.
"No, he is not a dwarf. He is just a small person," Peppermint corrected R.J. at last.
"Do you have a method to contact Teddy? I need to speak with him." Walus calmly asked.
"I think I have his number here," Peppermint went through her cellphone. She swiped it opened and showed it to Walus.
"Thank you for the number," Walus nodded as it dinged on his Palm Planner. He then revisited his notes, "I will be sure to call him for more information. Do you guy know who is Breathless? Do you know anything about her?"
Peppermint fixed their dress of some wrinkles. They thought it over, "I think I have heard that name before. . . Wasn't she like an old washed up singer?"
R.J. stopped and thought hard, "I think she had business with Top Idol."
"Do you know of any connection between Breathless to Kid?" Walus waited as he check on the status bar of Edwin's progress. The restoration was taking a while. He would have to check with the police file to confirm his other ideas.
"I remember something about Breathless. I took Kid out to this place. It was called the Glass Slipper. She was following a lead about this big rich guy, Mr. Parallex. He supposedly was endangering rare bears by drilling for coal in the southern states," R.J. snapped his fingers, "I think Kid had found the singer there while she was looking for a way to meet with Mr. Parallex."
Walus wrote it down faithfully and then asked, " Do you have any other information you wish to share?"
Peppermint crossed their arms, "Don't bother trying to talk to Kid's family about anything she did here on campus. They never did care for her nor her time with us."
"I see. . ." Walus nodded, "Thanks for your time today. You have been very helpful."
With the rain pouring down outside, Walus turned back to the outside of the Unicorn. He goes to the sidewalk goes the main street of the university. Walus stared up at the rain and thought over of what to occur next. He could contact the mysterious Teddy or seek out Soledad Marshal. Walus pulled out his phone and dialed the number that R.J. had given him. He stood next to the hover cab section. The phone rang and nothing came from the answer. It went over to the voicemail. Walus sighed and left a message to Teddy, "Hello Teddy, this is Detective Walus Knight. On behalf of the Watts Police Department, I need to speak with you as soon as possible."
A new yellow hover cab came down and waited for him to enter. He could have called for the police car. But Walus needed time to think. Walus got in and punched in his destination. He leaned back in the cab and watched the city go by. The Dark Shadow was in on the problem. He reviewed incoming notes from the other police officers. The detective rubbed his forehead as he considered the information. Edwin had not made much progress on the hacked up data. It was most likely the kidnappers doing. The Dark Shadow had other things to deal with then a kidnapping case of an heiress. No there was something else here. The Dark Shadow would want him to realize it before their meeting.
Walus's eye twitched just a bit. They had taken Miss Caroline and his office was a wreck. He had no idea at the moment for the what that was all about. But he could assume it was meant more for Edwin. Walus shook his head. All of his orderly placed paperwork would be all over the floor. He would have to stay out of the office until the later. Surely then it would sting less to have a look around it then. He opened his Palm Planner and looked at the images of Kid's room. He was right there was something wrong there. The place had been done over too neatly. He typed up a message for Chief Vicky to check on the dorm, especially the toys. One of them didn't look right with its stitching.
