Chapter Thirteen
Edwin had designed the hover droid to be no longer than a fly. It was quick and silent. It flew around with great ease and speed. Edwin had nicked named it McFly. Walus had not found the name amusing. But the device was useful to scan out areas. Walus did not like to admit he took Edwin's McFly every now and then for bird watching. The hover droid was flying about Kid's room, which sat tidy and without a sign of any struggle or problem. It was a typical college form of girly things and stuff animals. There were text books and clothing about in the closet. It lacked any family photos due to the feud the girl had ongoing with her father. Walus looked at the video and tried to piece together the information that the others had granted him. Walus tried to find what was clearly not sitting right with Edwin. But there was little sign of it. He had a minute left for them to come and find him here. He called back the hover droid and pocketed it.
Walus turned around as Chief Vicky and her right name, Scott, appeared. Scott was the much more even tempered of the two. He was the head detective of Watts City. Scott's brownish hair was plastered to his face as he stepped along with the chief. His dark blue raincoat was doing the trick of moving aside all of the student who were in the courtyard. Chief Vicky was an average woman with her uniform on of all blue. Her silver hair covered over by her rain hat. Her expression was locked on in steaming anger. Her rubber boots her heavy on the ground as she roared out Walus's name, "DECTECTIVE WALUS!"
"Chief Vicky and Detective Scott, so good to see you out here," Walus grinned as faced them.
Chief Vicky pointed to him, "When I said about to the department, it wasn't for a party. It is an order. You need to be there for a debriefing."
"I have other clients besides the police department. Miss Caroline wanted me to follow up on this other case we picked up. They needed my opinion on the subject."
"I don't care if Jesus Christ invited you out! You are required to be at the department!" Vicky nearly screamed.
"Vicky. . . I understand this is gravely serious business, but you should really watch your blood press. All of this yelling will be bad for your health."
"I don't give a damn about my health at a time like this! I got on high profile case of an heiress missing! I have another one dead! I need your ass over there now. We have to speak about the evidence!"
"Now Chief Vicky, see here to reason. I was following my leads and I was planning on being right over there. I just needed to finish the last of it."
"Walus this is no time to be cute!" Chief Vicky grabbed his arm, "You will get in the car now before the press gets here. We need to resolve this matter before I even say anything to the media."
"Let me guess. . . There are two very rich men who want to have a word with us at the station?" Walus started to walk over to the car.
Detective Scot remarked, "With the growing evidence we are gaining. . . I would hate to say we will need to arrest you and your brother for murder charges."
Walus paused and turned back to them, "Excuse me?"
"We will talk back at the station like I requested. Now get in the car!" Chief Vicky snapped at him.
Walus got in the car quietly and sat down as Chief Vicky and Detective Scott got in next. Walus shook his head, "You know this has to be a set up. We have been half way around the world for two weeks. We have plenty of eye witnesses putting us in various locations during that time frame. Additionally, we have video and other kinds of media coverage locating us there. I think we could not be accused of us a strange charge."
Chief Vicky raised her hand, "Please, Detective Walus, if we were going to charge you with the crime you would be in cuff now. I, however, cannot say the same of your brother."
"Chief, you cannot be serious we have would have a solid alibi! We were working on a case together the whole time! We just got back into town yesterday!" Walus shook his head.
"We need to get you in the debriefing and review why the whole thing is rotten," Detective Scott coolly added.
Walus thought over the information and the codes that Edwin sent him. He needed to know what the police had gathered and why the whole thing was fishy. Walus peered up again at the dorms. The case details about the dorms being shut down for termites, the girl being locked up with the cops, and the singer were not adding up. Here he was with the dorms and the notes about the other girl, Olivia. He would just have to go along and see what this all had to do with Edwin.
. . .
A normal day for Yankee Smith would consist of working at his desk and doing his paperwork for the first half. The second half would be going around on patrol with Scout to check on the slums and the gang areas. He would follow along with the head detective as a shadow to learn more about being a detective. A recommendation from Walus got him in such a position with Chief Vicky.
Yankee had just been a regular beat cop assigned plenty of paperwork. But Walus for some reason that he had a spark for being more than a beat cop. The whole shadowing Detective Scott started in the last two months. Yankee had done pretty well with staying out of the way. But he had been severing as the Knight Brother's insider for information since they did him that solid about his little sider. Yankee was glad they cleared her of the several counts of fraud. Anyways, Yankee's life as a cop was nothing no other cop could claim.
Half a day in the office, the other half in the field. He mostly sat along and listened to what he could about the place. On this day of his kidnapping, he wanted very little in his life. A good cup of joe, a nice day of light filing, and to stay out of Detective Scott's way. He had been told to stay in the station. It way have been the sound of his cough or flushed face. Or it could have been the fact he bothered Detective Scott too much on their last ride together. But he had been left in the station. The kidnappers out him as he went back to the janitor closet. He had something he needed to grab and get done. One of the other cops needed more copier paper.
Now, he was in a warehouse. His chip removed, which he would let anyone know that it had smarted like a mother. He had gone about following instructions that they made give him on the phone. He was blindfolded so he could make out nothing visually. But the sound, or rather, the lack of it made him realized that he had to be nowhere else other than the docks. He was so close to the water he could taste it in the air. Yankee had been tied to the chair for more time than he could count. He had been reasonably told by his kidnappers that he would be released in due time. That was if Detective Edwin could keep his nose about of the case. But Yankee knew it was a big deal. So he told him to come all the same. Yankee was betting on Edwin coming even if he had said don't come at all. Yankee endured the chair and the duck tape. He had plenty of time to think about between his time at the department and here.
He twisted his hands around and tried to gain some space. It was not a completely hopeless effort. He had managed to get some room on his wrists. The blood oozing down his arm had been good for making things wet and slippery. He paused to listen to his surroundings. He could hear the lapping of the water. But no other noises. It had been like that for several hours it had felt like.
The troublesome part of Yankee wasn't the bleeding arm nor the impending doom, when Edwin came running along. It was the fact the kidnappers had done something else to him. They had injected something into him. Not just the everyday kind of drugs. He knew it was a substance that was different for other things he was aware of. It was a digital virus. It not only inflected his chip, which caused him to have problems with his Palm Planner. It then started to spread into his body. Yankee had given it some thought as he had been sitting here over the span of time.
He had be inflected at some point with a drug that was both a biological and digital virus. But from what he heard the kidnappers talking about, it was an experiment. Not one that spread as fast as they wanted. They must have given it to him earlier then the injection. But still from what they said it sounded like it was not acting like they wanted. Something about Yankee having a resistance and not being a good carrier. Yankee had become dizzy form blood lost as he remained in the warehouse.
He twisted his wrists again. He knew the two Knight Brothers would be on their way to find him any moment now. He would just have to figure out in the meanwhile how to free himself. He did not want to disappoint them by being tied up and useless the whole time. Yankee wiggled around again.
. . .
Miss Caroline had not regretted her choice of heeled shoes as they ran along the different lanes. Edwin had grabbed her hand as the sirens were coming around. They had only stopped as Edwin finally found the door he wished to get into. Miss Caroline was left to be a lookout for the time being. She scanned both sides of the alleyway. It was true that the rain had rolled back in. They were not exactly hidden out here in their bright jackets, even with their makeshift disguises. Miss Caroline shook her head, Edwin understands the fundamentals of investigation. But I feel like this exploration in fieldwork has gotten out of control. Maybe we are being setup for a very bad joke from Walus. . .But I feel like he really does not understand the whole situation at hand. Oh Edwin, maybe we should have let this one go . . .
Edwin was against the electric lock and tinkering with the access code. It was not very hard to get through the data and listen to the final bots of the door come undone. He had cased the whole place from its blueprints just a short while ago. Edwin opened the door and nudged Miss Caroline. She took out her stun gun from her side and entered after Edwin. He closed the door with a click and pulled out his own gun. Together they followed the hallways. The distant sounds of the bots at work were seamless with the continuous click and thumps.
Edwin and Miss Caroline ducked to the side as Edwin gained a control of the cameras through his hacking. Miss Caroline frowned as the sirens were closer now. The sound was hard to mess. Miss Caroline whispered to Edwin, "Which way now?"
"I am looking at the camera feed. We should be coming up to the room where Yankee is being held. The way appears to be clear," Edwin peered down at his screen.
Miss Caroline bit her lip, "Edwin, the police officers are nearby. . . We could turn back and get their help."
"You are worried about being setup?"
"Yes, Edwin. I don't want any of us to get hurt. We have been rushing in hot and we are in trouble right now. We haven't been looking at the latest in the news. Edwin, I think going on further would be a bad idea."
"I am here to help Yankee. Miss Caroline, I don't want to endanger you either. You can hang back and watch things. I will go ahead and get Yankee," Edwin lifted up his gun and pressed further into the warehouse.
Miss Caroline waited behind Edwin. Just as she was going to take another step forward she felt two hands grab her and take her around the corner. She fought as hard as she could, but they silence her with ease. Meanwhile, Edwin went down the hall to the door where Yankee had been taken. He listened at the door and checked his feed. He heard nothing on the other side. On the camera fee he saw what appeared to be Yankee tied to a chair. His potbelly hidden in his uniform and a bag over his head. Edwin paused as he watched the feed. It seemed that there was a loop going on outside. The number of birds flying in the rain glitched. Edwin pressed his ear against the door again.
There were sounds of rustling. He checked out the door and saw nothing strange. He whispered to the door, "Yankee?"
The rustling continued.
Edwin knocked on the door with a patterned and waited for an sign.
Nothing came. Edwin grabbed the door handle and slowly opened it. It was then a large explosion came and knocked Edwin out. Last thing Edwin saw was the large flying door coming at him.
