Chapter Twenty-Five: I Will Do Very Well

Breathless waits behind the darken curtain. Igor encouragingly watches from the side wings of the stage as he waits for her. She turns around to peer at the other singers for the opera. Breathless nervously balls her hands into fists. Licking her lips she knows very well she has never been trained in opera or classical. It is something she hasn't done, but it must be done. Breathless warily scans over the rushed singers. The whole opera production had been taken over by Mr. Parallax and the leading singer had been replaced by Breathless. Bots put in for those who did not want to stand for the replacement of the lead. Breathless knows it is not right and something most fowl is going on. Mr. Parallax had called it opera the Automated Songbird.

Whatever it takes to find Kid. I will do whatever the police or the detectives say just so I know she is safe and sound again, Breathless holds up her head as the orchestra start up. She closes her eyes and listens to the tin sound of her own voice. The curtains start to rise as Breathless lifts her eyes to see it go up. She feels the tightness in her stomach as the orchestra's notes start to swell. She begins to find her note for the opening song.

Meanwhile in opera box six, Mr. Parallax steeples his hands as he taps his foot with the beat of the songs. His company sat uncomfortably in her chair as she adjusts her fine evening gown of silver. Mrs. Rivera Marshal bit down on her gloved thumb as the music starts up. Her green eyes widen as she sees Breathless begin her melody. Miss Rivera restlessly keeps her opera glasses in her lap as she taps her Palm Planner. The update from the boys is mixed. She darts her eyes over to Mr. Parallax as he beams at his little treasure down below. On edge, Mrs. Rivera tightens her hand as she dismisses the Palm Planner.

Mr. Parallax coolly answers, "We have our business to resolve. I believe I have what is rightfully yours."

"She is not a thing! She is my daughter!" Mrs. Rivera snaps.

"A smart, but nosy child you have then," Mr. Parallax shrugs, "She got into a spot of trouble with us, huh?"

Mrs. Rivera holds her breath and her ruby red lips thin into a deep frown. Her green eyes flash back to the opera down below, "My daughter. . . I tried to warn her not to dig into such things. . ."

"Yet here we are," Mr. Parallax laughs as he gestures to the box, "You have a girl in the interests of the environmental impacts of Top Idol and the mob."

"You are upset that one of your playthings ended up with my daughter!"

"Tsk, tsk, Mrs. Rivera. The lady singing now is not just a plaything. She is my future wife. Breathless has a refined voice, which I plan to restore back to its former glory. Her talent cannot be wasted," Mr. Parallax pauses to enjoy her voice. He laughs, "I just wanted to help clean up the mess she brought to both of us."

"You took her to get rid of her from your pet there," Mrs. Rivera hisses, "I agreed to let the device to be tested on her to correct her behaviors. I just wanted my daughter to be more respectable. . . Now, you are giving me these results!"

Mr. Parallax waves his hand, "No worries, no worries. I tested it on all of my wives. Plus, you saw how your little minions handle the test. Jimmy is right as rain. His IQ is perfectly intact, and he follows orders. Kid will only lose desire for journalism and her memories of the last five years."

"Oh, Kid wanted to be so liberal. I want her to be lawyer and not-"

"Into my Breathless," Mr. Parallax offers with a grin, "She is a fine woman my Breathless. You know she still has yet to discover all of her skills. I shaped her into who she is today. It wasn't easy to make the injuries look like an accident."

Mrs. Rivera shutters and folds her arms. She pauses as she picks up her opera glasses. In the crowd she spots the chief of police and she rustles about in discomfort. Mrs. Rivera whispers, "Do you think the police has caught onto us?"

"You fuss too much, woman. They will find your daughter within the next few hours. She will be safely delivered to your home. I just need you to give me what I asked for."

"Yes, yes," Mrs. Rivera reaches into her purse beside her. She takes out a small flash drive and hands it over to him, "I had to get eight different cops for the codes to the city systems. You know I could have gotten these, if you had just waited for me to win. The harder one was from that detective, Edwin. I had to break in myself."

"Ah, but that Olivia girl got in the way. It is a problem enough that her family was trying to take business from yours. Terrible thing it was. Now her parents cannot even manage their work," Mr. Parallax cold answers. He smirks over at Mrs. Rivera, "You have your own hidden talents, my dear."

Mrs. Rivera picks up her opera glasses and refuses to answer. She tartly asks, "What do you ever need those codes for anyways?"

"Forgive an old man I can hardly hear with these," Mr. Parallax gently places something into his ears, He muses to her, "Oh it will be great to reprogram Breathless. She will be one of my greatest wives. The problem has been that my past wives get dull and tend to break. I just have to hire help to watch after them."

"Break? Like they are ill?"

"Ah, dear woman, I am not mad. I just tinker with them a little if you will. I do after all have a lot of respect for nature. I just think human beings can do much better than what they are now," Mr. Parallax rolls his hand.

"What will you do with the codes?"

"Oh, Mrs. Rivera, I suppose there is no harm in telling you. We have come this far in our little association together," He chuckles, "Frankly my dear, I plan to conduct a mass mind control using the public broadcasting systems of our fair city. We are here for the maiden test on a large scale. Breathless will usher in the whole thing."

"Are you mad!? You cannot control people's minds! You were supposed to just take care of my daughter and that Olivia girl. Then we would be even once I got you the codes!"

"Mrs. Rivera, I have so much more to do. I had to clean up with the murder, the missing officers, and someone putting a bombing in my warehouse," Mr. Parallax yawns, "Now good woman, hush. Breathless is about to get into an aria."

"I will tell the police! You will not get away with this!"

"Mrs. Rivera, if you value your daughter you will have a seat and be silent. I cannot hear my Breathless singing," Mr. Parallax bushes her away, "Besides if she stops singing or the orchestra stops the program with lunch right now. Right here. So go ahead. Enjoy the opera as your last bit of free will."
