1994 Rehearsal for the gig; It's 4 pm
They are rustling through their notebooks to find a perfect song to do at the party tomorrow.
"What about the one we were working on the other day?" Reggie asks.
"No," Brittany replies. "I think it should be something fresh, ya know." Brittany throws her notebook down on the couch and walks over to Luke, who is standing against the amp. She takes Luke's notebook out of his hands.
"Hey!" He says to her. "Give that back!" She flips through all of the pages until she sees a song.
"Love Will Light The Day? Wow Luke. That's a little lovey dovey, don't you think?"
"Can I have that back please? I don't think it would work. We need an upbeat song."
"You speak near and true. But not what I hear from you. For your eyes say it all. And I admit I'm about to fall."
"Seriously Brittany. Give that back!" He starts chasing her around the studio. She is able to get away from him, but only for about a couple of seconds. He grabs her by the waste with one arm and picks her up. He takes his notebook back and sets her back on the floor. "Thank you!"
She rolls her eyes at him and says, "Whatever! Anyways, if we can't find a song in time, we are gonna have to cancel and wait until our next gig."
"Fine! We can do this song! We are gonna have to find another one to do."
"Yay. And okay. We'll find one. I promise!"
"This song is a duet."
"Great. So will you and I sing it? Or do you want to sing it with Alex?"
"Why would he want to sing it with it Alex?" Bobby asks.
Luke shoots her the dirtiest look. "Seriously Brit?!" He asks her. "Um, because I am dating him. And I am bi."
"What is Bi anyways?" Reggie says not getting what Luke says.
"It's a person who likes both boys and girls. Like me Reg. I like both girls and boys." He emphasizes the word and because he needs Reggie to understand it.
"Oh okay. Wait, what?! You're bi? And you're dating Alex?!"
"Yeah."
"We aren't going to judge Luke," Bobby says. "Not at all. We are okay with who you are. Inside and out."
"Yeah," Reggie says agreeing with Bobby. "Anyways, do you want to song it with Alex?"
"No," Luke replies. "Only because I think it would sound better with a boy and girl voice. No offense Alex."
"None taken."
"Okay," Brittany says. "Done this is going to be a duet, Luke can teach it to me later. We need to do one for all of us. We'll just have to keep looking."
They all nod and go back to flipping through their notebooks to find a song. "Wait!" Bobby says. "What about this one?"
"Ride?" Reggie says reading off the title out loud. "It sounds good to me. What about you guys?"
"Yeah," Brittany says. "I'm okay with it." Alex and Bobby nod in agreement. "Well, let's get practicing!" Reggie, Bobby and Luke grab their guitars and tune them to the right pitch. Brittany grabs her mic out of her backpack and hooks it up to the amp. She grabs Luke's notebook off of the amp and scans through the first verse and chorus. "Okay. I think I have the first verse and chorus memorized. Let's go!"
The music starts to play and Brittany starts singing. "I just wanna stay in the sun where I find. I know it's hard sometimes." It is really good. This song Bobby wrote is really good. The sound is amazing, the music is clashing together. They sound perfect. The melody is amazing and Brittany's voice clashing with it also sounds amazing. Out of nowhere, they see someone come through the open studio doors. Alex and Brittany's mom is standing in the doorway. They stop playing to greet her.
"Hey mom," Alex says. "What are you doing here? Not to be rude or anything!"
"I just wanted to see you guys rehearse," she replies. "Is that bad?"
"No," Like replies. "Of course it isn't Mrs. Mercer. Please sit and enjoy!"
"Thank you and please, call me Donna." Luke nods as she sits down.
"Anyways," Brittany says. "We are working on a song that Bobby wrote. I only have the first part down, and also the chorus. We just started rehearsing it today."
"Well. Let me hear it!"
They all get in position and start playing what they have already learned. It actually sounds better than before. They are more together, more in tune and it just sounds overall perfect. When Brittany goes to look at Luke, she sees that he is already looking at her. She quickly takes her mic off of the stand and walks around. She walks over to Reggie and puts her arm on his shoulder. Then the music stops.
"That's what we got so far!" Brittany says excitedly. "What do you think?"
"It's really good," Donna replies.
"Bobby wrote it. And we are performing another song after it. One that Luke wrote."
"Can I hear it?"
"Oh," Luke says. "We really haven't practiced it yet."
"Okay. That's fine. Anyways, I have to go. I need to go somewhere. I will see you two back at home right?"
The blonde twins nod with a smile. "Good. See you later boys!" When Donna leaves, they go back to practicing that one part for what seems like hours.
"Hey," Brittany exclaims after a couple of hours of practicing. "What time is it?"
Luke looks at his watch and replies,"Six o'clock. Do you have a couple more hours in you?"
"Yeah. I do. Do you guys?" Luke nods, but the rest of the boys shake their head no.
"I'm beat sis," Alex replies. "I need to get some sleep."
"Yeah babe," Reggie answers out of breath for some reason. "I'm beat as well. I need to hit the hay. Can we call it a night?"
"Yeah," Brittany says to them. "Actually, you three can. Luke and I can stay a little longer to work on the duet! What do you say Luke?"
"Yeah," He replies. "Okay." Alex and Bobby automatically grab their stuff and head out of the studio. Reggie follows them, but before he leaves, he walks over to Brittany and kisses her.
"I'll see you tomorrow," he says to her.
"Okay," Brittany replies. Reggie heads out of the studio and automatically, Brittany grabs Luke's notebook out of his hands.
"Seriously," he remarks. "We're back to the grabbing!"
"Well, we need to practice the song don't we. And it would have to involve some grabbing. Let's start from the beginning!" He nods and walks over to the piano and sits down. "What are you doing?"
"It would sound better with a piano and not a guitar."
"Okay. It would probably sound better if someone who actually knew how to play the piano-" She was cut off by Luke playing the piano. Really good.
"You mean like that?" He asks her after he finishes.
"Yeah. Exactly like that. Anyways, let's just get to practicing."
Luke starts playing the piano and tells her,"I go first." And then he starts singing.
[Luke]
You speak near and true. But not what I hear from you. For your eyes say it all.
He continues to sing. His voice is swaying well together with the piano. His voice is perfectly pitched.
Brittany's inner thoughts start,'Wow. I never knew how well he could sing. He is like a momma bird singing to it's baby. His voice can be used as a lullaby. Dang he can sing. I guess you learn something new about people you care about every day don't you? He has some good vocals. I wonder who this song is about. Is it about Alex? It probably is.' Her inner thoughts get interrupted.
"Hey," Luke says to her. "You missed your entering. Let's just pick it up from where you start, okay?"
He starts playing the piano and nods to her when she starts singing.
[Brittany]
What's in a name. I'm ready to risk the blame. Call me your own. No matter where we've got to go.
Her voice is perfect as well. It's overpowering the piano and it is in perfect range.
Then they start singing together.
[Both]
This love could be great. But they say it would be wrong. I don't care cause I'd be lost without you. We live because we love. We love 'cause we belong.
Both of their voices are clashing well together. They are both overpowering the piano to where you can't hear it. Their eyes pull away from the paper and onto each other's eyes. They look into each other's eyes as they finish singing.
Love will light the day. Love will light the day. Love will light the day. Love will light the day.
The piano starts to fade away as their voices do.
"Wow," Brittany says l. "That was a great song Luke. I never knew you had it in you. Just like I was thinking earlier, I guess you do learn something new about others every day. Am I right?"
"Yeah," Luke says. "I guess you do. And thanks. It took me a while to write it and finally figure out who it's about." He is wishing he didn't say that last part because now he knows she is going to ask.
"Who is it about? Is it about Alex? Or someone else?"
"Okay. If I tell you, you can't tell anyone else. Understand?" She nods. "It is about…." Luke didn't want to tell her it is about her. "You." He rolls his eyes at himself. He had to try and correct what he said and fast. "You and me. And our friendship." Brittany didn't buy it. But she went along with it.
"Okay. Yeah, sure Luke. It's totally because we are such good friends! Anyways, I'm tired. Let's go through it one more time and then call it a night."
Luke starts playing the piano and tries to hide his feelings and thoughts on what just happened. He starts singing and as he does, he wonders if he even likes the right sibling. He wonders if he actually ever had feelings for Alex or if he used Alex just to get even closer to Brittany. Even though there is no point in that. Him and Brittany are closer than him and Alex are. So he just questions the entire relationship he has with Alex. Then he hears Brittany start to sing.
His inner thoughts start, 'She is super amazing. I didn't know she could hit those notes. Makes her even better. Man, I need to pay attention to the song.' He looks back at the paper, even though he has memorized the entire song, and starts to sing with Brittany. She is trying to keep her eyes open, but every second that she fights trying not to close her eyes, less time they have to practice this song. She looks at Luke and she suddenly gets the energy to sing. She finishes singing with all the energy she has left. The piano finishes and that's a sign that Brittany can close her eyes.
"That one was better than the first one," Luke says looking at the half asleep Brittany.
"No," she replies. "Yeah. It totally was. Look, I am tired. Let's call it a night." She stands up and when she is all the way up, her knees give up and she falls down. Before she could, Luke catches her.
"Okay. I'm driving you home."
"You know what. How about you drive yourself home and I drive myself afterwards." Luke grabs their stuff, heads out of the studio and locks it. He then heads to her car, throws her in the front seat and their stuff in the back.
"You are too tired to drive. I'll just drive to my house and you can stay the night there."
"Fun! We can have pillow fights and paint each other's nails. We can also-" Before she could finish, she fell asleep. Luke slightly laughs. As he drives to his house, he wonders what Reggie is going to say if he finds out that Brittany is staying the night at Luke's. Luke thinks that Reggie would probably freak out if he would have found out. He also thinks that Reggie would probably say that it's just a friend helping out a friend, right? Luke clears his head and focuses on the road. He sees that he is coming close to his house. He just hopes that Reggie will be okay with her staying at his house. He pulls up to his house, turns the car off and hops out. He goes to the back seats and grabs their backpacks and jackets. Then he heads to the passenger side and picks up Brittany out of her seat.
"Where are we?" Brittany asks as she wakes up. Well, kinda wakes up.
"My house," he replies as he carries her to the door. "Can you walk by yourself now?" She nods and he sets her down. He unlocks the door and they walk in. They see his mom and dad sitting on the couch. When they turn around, they look worried. "What's wrong?"
"What's wrong is," his mom starts. "That you didn't come home last night and we were worried!"
"I went to school. So, I didn't run away if that's what you were worried about."
"Where did you stay last night?" His dad asks him.
"I stayed at the studio! And before you ask if I was alone, I wasn't."
"Who were you with?"
"A friend. Alex Mercer." His parents are mad. They don't like what their son had told him that night he left. They were against it. "Can we talk about this later? I'm tired and I want to go to bed!"
"Yes," his mom says. "And that's all you better be doing." She looks at Brittany. "Hi Brittany!" They both walk up the stairs and into his room.
"You can sleep in my room," Luke tells her. "I can sleep in the guest room."
"Thanks," Brittany replies. She plops her entire body on his bed. He sits down next to her and lays down.
"I'm sorry you had to hear that."
"No, it's fine. I'm used to the arguing and yelling. I wake up to it a lot. I don't like it, but hey. What are you gonna do?"
"I'm sorry. That really sucks. I guess you really can't do much." They both sit up and face each other. "You did really good on the song today."
"Thanks." They both slightly laugh. "We should get to bed." Brittany takes off her shoes and puts them by Luke's bed. Luke gets up and walks outside to go to the guest room. When he gets out, Brittany closes her eyes and slowly drifts off to sleep.
…
In the middle of the night, Brittany wakes up to yelling and arguing. Just like she told Luke, It's nothing new to her. She sits up, walks out of Luke's room, and down the stairs. When she looks around the corner, she sees Luke and his mom arguing. She sits at the bottom step and listens in.
"Why does it matter that I brought her here?" Luke asked his mom.
"It matters because her brother is not right, so that makes her not right," his mom argues back.
"And why isn't he right, mother? Is it because he's gay? It's probably because he likes boys. Or maybe it's because he is dating your bisexual son!"
"Get the hell out of my face! You don't deserve this attention. Get out of my face before I make you!"
"Gladly!" He bumps into his mom's arm as he walks away from her. He notices Brittany sitting on the step, but he keeps walking. His mom turns around and sees Brittany.
"Hi Brittany," she says to her.
"Hey Emily," she says as she gets up. She turns around and walks up the stairs to Luke's room, knowing that's where he went. It's a force of habit for him. "Hey. You okay?" She puts her hand on his shoulder.
"No," he tells her. He turns around and tears are rolling down his cheeks. "I don't like that she hates you and Alex. You guys are like my family, and so is Reggie, but she doesn't hate on him because he's straight."
"Well. I'm straight and she hates me. She only hates me because my brother is gay. That's not a good reason to hate me."
"Yeah. I know. It sucks. She's just a horrible person, Brit. I don't love her. She judges the people that I do love."
"You love Alex?"
"Yeah. No. I don't know." He sits on his bed and rubs his neck. "All I know is that she likes to hurt me by hurting the people I care about."
Brittany sits next to him and rubs his back. "It's okay. At least she doesn't threaten to kill us." Luke looks up at Brittany and gives her a look. "She does, doesn't she?"
"That's why we started arguing. She said 'If you don't get that Mercer out of my house, that Mercer will no longer be around!'"
Brittany tries to hold in her tears. "Hey. Do you see me sitting here, next to you? Do you see me breathing?" He nods. "Then there is absolutely no reason for you to be sad. I'm okay. Alex and I will be okay. You will be okay, hopefully."
"Yeah. I guess so. And I don't think she has the actual balls to kill anyone, but you do."
"Yeah. I do. I won't, but I do. Whoever hurts my friends better watch out. I'm dangerous when someone messes with my friends."
"Yeah. You are. You scare me sometimes whenever I mess with you, Alex or Reggie."
"You mess with friends, you mess with me. That's literally what I say to everyone."
"Wait! Is that why you threw that roll at the teacher? Because they were messing with a friend?"
"No. I was aiming for someone else and I accidentally hit a teacher. I also got detention, but it was an accident. Dude I swear!"
"Yeah. Okay." She shoves him off the bed and his butt hits the floor with a huge thud. "We should go back to bed." He gets up off the floor and goes into his bed, but he realizes that he is sleeping in the guest room. "Right." He gets out of his own bed and starts to walk out.
Brittany grabs his wrist and tells him,"You can still sleep in here if you want. As long as nothing happens, I'm sure we'll be fine." He nods as he lays back in his bed. "Everything needs to be better in the morning because I won't be able to handle any of it." She lays down next to Luke and goes under the covers.
"I hope everything is better in the morning. We need a really good day tomorrow if we want this gig to go well. We also need our sleep, don't you think." No response. "Brittany?" He sits up and sees the blonde sleeping. He lays back down and falls asleep himself
