37. Flora & Fauna (May is Flowering Contest Entry)

Under the lamppost, in the dark
Crickets supply soundtracks
We amble onward, through the park
On sidewalks, skipping cracks

Your skin is cool, the air is thick
Sprinklers all dying down
For yellow tulips, you reach and pick
To form my makeshift crown

Daisies, sweet peas, marigold
Carnations stacked as tiers
Rows of roses to behold
Place stems behind my ears

Candid corsage I will wear
We meld in the woodland
Your fingers trickle through my hair
Petals against the strands

Your whispers here will water me
A filamented flume
Chloroplast, you honor me
Passion within to bloom

Two hearts for beating, audibly
Emerge and then recoil
Limbs like leaves, in botany
Feet seep into the soil

A seeded fate, future to stem
Blossom, your mindfulness
Your love as sunlight, in it blends
As photosynthesis

Your laughter, pure and plentiful
As pollen, breathe you in
Energy - light to chemical
Pigment against pale skin

Your smile, asymmetrical
Feed on your sunshine words
Joined fingertips, identical
Sing as the mockingbird

Quietly, our secrets spill
Upon the grass we lay
You're bright as any daffodil
You're every shade of May

Author's Note:

Hello, my darlings! Thanks for checking out my entry in the May is Flowering contest (held by WP_Poetry)! Here, we were simply meant to convey what flowers mean to us - either in a literal or metaphorical sense.

May and flowers - you can't really have one without the other, can you?

For me, personally, flowers and romance are also inextricable. (Is there anything more romantic than being offered a stem or two, from the one that you adore? It's the classic, ultimate depiction of devotion and absolute affection.)

If you enjoyed this piece, please consider leaving a vote or a comment! It helps a lot, even if it seems like it doesn't. In fact, this book just recently hit #47 on the Hot List for Poetry, thanks to all of you. :)

You guys are amazing.

Over and out,
Ree

P.S. - Does anyone else turn into a big pile of mush whenever Sleeping at Last is playing? The song attached (up at the top) is one of my all time favorites. Those lyrics! Talk about a real poet!
