"With eyes that make you melt
He lends his coat for shelter
Plus he's there for you
When he shouldn't be
But he stays all the same
Waits for you
Then sees you through
And I can tell that he'll be there for life..."

Chapter-6
"Nana!"
Like an eager child Timmy hugged the old lady. He tended to revert back to a kid whenever he was with his grandmother. To him, Nana meant winter holidays with heaps of cookies; Nana meant summer nights spent listening to stories of kings and queens unknown; Nana meant cozy blanket, warm jumpers and pickled ginger. Nana meant Timmy's safe haven.
"I missed you so much!"
"No you didn't. You just missed my cookies and pickles, you greedy kitten." She patted her grandchild's cheeks teasingly. Nana with her salt and pepper curls, warm shawl, ankle length dress and a heart shaped face with a kind smile looked like a painting straight out of children's book.
"Nanaaaa! That's not true!"
She laughed at Timmy's whiney tone and took a good at him, "My my, ZhouZhou! You're growing like a beanpole! But why have you lost weight so much? Aren't you eating properly?"
Before Timmy could answer, his father who was watching this reunion with an amused expression spoke up for the first time, "You two are not planning to camp out here at the airport for the night, are you?"
"Oh hush, you spoilsport," Nana tutted at her son, "Don't think that I haven't noticed your weight loss too."
"Yes, mother, we have all been on a hunger strike lately but as you are here now you can fatten us up all over again. Shall we go?"
The three of them left the airport and drove towards home.
XOXOXOX
Timmy glanced at the clock for the fourth time in the last ten minutes. He would have to leave for the pub soon and wasn't looking forward to explaining to his parents why he was leaving when Nana just arrived. On the other hand, not going was not an option either. With a resolute nod to himself he got up.
"Where are you going?" His mother asked.
"I, uh, we have a rehearsal scheduled this evening."
"Mother just arrived after so long and you want to leave?" His father's incredulous tone stopped short Timmy's explanation.
"While I support your musical ventures whole heartedly, son, you must not forget your familial duties either."
Timmy bit back the retort that was on the tip of his tongue. Angering dad would not do any good for him. If dad began to press the matter and came to know about him singing at the pub, he could kiss his love life a goodbye. The moment that thought entered his mind, his whole body went cold. Not being able to see JingYu anymore..... no no no no, he'd have to keep his calm.
"Dad...please, it's really important..we have a show-"
"No. You will not leave the house this evening."
"Dad-"
"ZhouZhou?" Nana's soft voice rang out. Timmy went to where she was sitting on the couch and kneeled down in front of her.
"Nana?"
"Can you delay for a few hours?"
Timmy swallowed, "I can't, Nana, it's- it's not in my hand. I'm so sorry."
Patting his cheek she smiled, "Silly boy. No need to pull that long face. You must go if it really matters to you. I will be right here when you come back."
Taking those wrinkly, squishy hands into his own Timmy answered, "It does. It really really does matter to me."
He wanted to instill all those emotions he could not speak aloud into his words, and he knew that he succeeded when his grandmother's brows went up widening her eyes.
"Really?" She whispered.
Timmy nodded and whispered back, "Really."
"Oh ZhouZhou..." A kiss was planted on his forehead that felt like a blessing. "Then you must go. Must follow your heart."
XOXOXOX
"Daydreamer
Sitting on the sea
Soaking up the sun
He is a real lover..."
JingYu stood there, at a darkened corner, as he listened to the song, mesmerized. His shift was over but instead of leaving he chose to stay, leaning on the wall, hidden from the world as the melody swirled around him, the lyrics sweeping him away. He stood there and saw how Timmy's eyes searched the bar area for something.......or someone. He stood there and saw those closed eyes, quivering mouth forming the words, nimble fingers running all over the strings. Timmy was glowing and JingYu realized that he hadn't seen something so beautiful in a long, long time.
Timmy's eyes strayed to the bar again. JingYu came out of the dark, revealing himself.
"A jaw dropper
Looks good when he walk
Is the subject of their talk
He would be hard to chase
But good to catch..."
They were looking at each other now. Something lit up behind those doe eyes when they landed on him. JingYu's nails dug into his palm.
"And he could change the world
With his hands behind his back, oh...."
There was a war raging on inside him. He should not stay yet he could not leave. This should not be happening yet it could not be stopped. What was this? This was what it was....
"You can find him sittin' on your doorstep
Waiting for a surprise
And he will feel like he's been there for hours
And you can tell that he'll be there for life...
Daydreamer..."
At the end, JingYu tentatively mirrored the wide smile that covered Timmy's face.
XOXOXOX
"Why did you take this job?" JingYu asked as they walked on.
They ended up going home together...again.
He thought he wouldn't get an answer as a long silence followed his question. But the question had been nagging him ever since the first day and he thought themselves acquainted enough by now to ask on a personal matter.
"So that I can meet you."
Timmy giggled when JingYu stopped abruptly on his track.
"Oh my God! I got you! I totally got you, didn't I?" The giggle turned into a roaring laughter.
JingYu, however, could not follow this time. Something in those words rang too genuine to be covered up as a joke. But it couldn't be the truth, could it? No, of course not. Damn his stupid head, making things up out of nothing again. Why did anyone want to go to such lengths just to meet him? Him, a nobody? Nah, Timmy was definitely kidding.
The boy stumbled forward and JingYu's Jiu Jitsu reflex helped to catch him just in time.
"Easy easy. Look where you are walking into." He steadied the boy.
"Yeah, thanks. Sorry. Felt dizzy momentarily. But 'm okay now." Timmy rubbed his head as if to dislodge something.
But that statement pushed JingYu into a full adult mode. " Dizzy? Why? Are you running a fever?" He felt up Timmy's forehead with the back of his hand, "No, the temperature seems to be normal. Is there any vomiting feeling? Do you want me to call a cab for you?"
Looking at Timmy's slow blinking eyes and dazed expression JingYu thought, shit, is he going to faint?! I don't even know where he lives! "Timmy?"
That seemed to jumpstart the boy. "No no, I'm all right, I'm fine. It's nothing. I haven't eaten anything since morning, so, I guess tha-"
"WHAT?!"
Timmy almost jolted by that sudden burst and began to protest when JingYu tugged at the guitar case on his back.
"Hey, what are- I'm fine! You don't have to, hey hey-"
JingYu hung the case on his own right shoulder, held Timmy by his lower arm and began to drag him forward. And when the boy asked him where was he taking him, JingYu didn't even look back while replying.
"To make sure you don't faint."
XOXOXOX
"Slow down, will you?!"
Timmy looked up from his bowl of noodle soup, stringy noodles hanging from his closed mouth which he slurped in quickly.
JingYu snorted at the act.
"Don't eat too fast or you'll have stomach ache later."
Timmy munched on.
"Why haven't you eaten anything the whole day?"
Munch. Munch. Munch.
JingYu sighed, "Timmy?"
"Na'a 'ame 'as essite' f'got to 't"
"What? Don't talk with your mouth full!" JingYu lightly slapped the boy on the shoulder.
"Nana came today. I was so excited that I forgot to eat." Said he as if that would explain everything.
"Who's...nana?"
He was greeted with a 'duh' expression, "My grandma, of course."
"You forgot to eat because your grandma came?! How old are you, five?"
Timmy stuck out his tongue at him, proving JingYu's point.
He took out his wallet as Timmy finally finished his food. His own was finished ages ago. He had shoved the boy to the first street side stall he could find and ordered for two big bowls of noodle soup.
"Hey, let me pay min-"
"Shut up."
"Give me back my guitar-"
"Shut up."
"You're a dick."
"Shut- what did you say?!"
XOXOXOX
Turned out their places were on the same subway line, just a few stations apart. The compartment was relatively empty considering the time. Still carrying the guitar case JingYu sat beside Timmy. The silence had fallen on them once they entered the subway. While JingYu didn't want them to be this strangely quiet, he didn't know how to break it, either. Timmy, on the other hand, wasn't helping the case by staring into space.
"Don't, um, don't do this again." JingYu attempted at striking up a conversation.
"Hmm?"
"Don't starve yourself. No wonder you're so skinny."
"I am not!"
"You are too."
Timmy scowled at him and JingYu had this sudden urge to pinch his cheeks which he checked in just in time. Where the hell did that come from? Pinch his cheeks? Seriously?
"Thanks."
He was dragged out of his self evaluation by Timmy's voice.
"No problem. I couldn't possibly let you go when you were fainting off on the street like a swooning lady, could I?" He meant it as a joke but it didn't quite work as Timmy's face fell for some reason.
"Oh... Yeah, that's right. Sorry for, uh, causing trouble for you."
Oh, so that's why... "Hey, it's not like that.." he hurried on to assure and realized that it was true. He didn't help Timmy just because he needed help and it was JingYu's duty to lend a hand. He did it because-
The train began to slow down and Timmy got up from his seat. His station had come. He took the guitar from JingYu without meeting his eyes and was just about to turn to the door when JingYu caught his hand. He meant to hold his arm but ended up holding his hand.
"I helped you because I wanted to. It wasn't a charity. It wasn't."
The train coming to a stop. Timmy looked at the door, looked back, searched something in JingYu's eyes which he probably found as a shy smile slowly appeared on his face. And walked to the door. His fingers trailed over JingYu's palm.
Timmy stood there, at the station, looking at him through the window glass as the train began to move again. JingYu looked back till he couldn't see him anymore.
"There's no way I could describe him
What I'll say is
Just what I'm hoping for...."
These words from the song curled around his consciousness. He balled up the hand where Timmy's fingers had touched him.
