10. Rest
"So this is an RV?"
Namjoon nodded as he sat at the table, watching Taehyung standing in the center of the RV and spinning in a slow circle as he let his eyes take in everything. Shortly after the hay argument in the loft, the four of them had left Guy's place to return back to the RV with their stash in tow. Once they had arrived back at the RV, they had decided to keep it in hiding until they had figured out their next destination. Suga was currently in the process of trying to figure it out as he sat in the driver's seat with the journal; Hobi in the passenger seat.
"Yes, Taehyung. This is an RV."
"Incredible..."
Namjoon watched with amusement as Taehyung continued to look about the RV as if it were some sort of exotic treasure. With how out of place an RV was in that time period, Namjoon supposed that it could be considered that to him. Namjoon continued to sit at the table as Taehyung wandered about, touching various surfaces. Namjoon's gaze was only torn from watching Taehyung when he heard Suga muttering something to himself up front. Flicking his eyes to where Suga was, he watched as Suga put the journal down rather aggressively on the dash. Getting up from where he was seated, Namjoon went over to where Suga was.
"Is something wrong?"
"I just..." Suga rubbed a hand over his eyes, "I'm..."
"You're tired," said Namjoon as Suga brought his hand away from his eyes to narrow his gaze at Namjoon.
"I'm not tired. Security protocols don't get tired."
"Perhaps, but humans do and that's what you are now."
"Is that what's wrong with Hobi?" asked Suga as he nodded his head past Namjoon.
Namjoon turned to look to see that Hobi was slouched in the passenger seat with his head lolled back; arms dangling by his sides as he strained to keep his eyes open. Namjoon couldn't hide the smirk that appeared on his face at the sight of that, nodding his head as he looked back at Suga.
"Yes. You both really haven't had any sleep yet," said Namjoon. "Your bodies are tired. Being tired makes you have a harder time focusing. It even makes you irritable."
"I'm not irritable. I'm just annoyed."
"Suga..."
"Just shut up," he said as he closed his eyes. "You're making my head hurt."
"Okay, that's it. You're getting up and going to bed. Our next destination can wait until you're more rested. Besides, the RV is still hidden in the trees," insisted Namjoon.
Namjoon heard Suga protesting, but decided to ultimately tune him out as he slipped his arms underneath him, trying to drag him onto his feet. Suga eventually relented, standing behind the driver's seat as Namjoon moved to Hobi, shaking his shoulder gently. Hobi turned his head to look at him.
"Get up, okay? I'm going to help you both to the bed out back so you can sleep," said Namjoon.
"Sleep? What is that? Is that like fried chicken?"
Namjoon chuckled as he hefted Hobi to his feet like he had done Suga. With them both upright, he grabbed a sleeve from each of them and began to lead them towards the bed out in the back of the RV.
"Hobi, you seriously can't be hungry again already, right?" asked Namjoon.
"He shouldn't be," grumbled Suga. "He ate some of that stupid hay earlier."
"What? Horses eat it so I figured humans could too!"
When they reached the bedroom area, Namjoon let go of their arms and moved to roll the bedsheet back. Taehyung had stopped his exploration of the RV to come see what was going on, standing in the doorway as Namjoon turned back around to look at Suga and Hobi.
"Lie down," he said. "Sleep will do wonders for you."
Hobi didn't hesitate to listen. He moved to lay down in the middle of the bed. Hobi fanned his arms out on either side of him like he was a snow angel, taking up a majority of the space that was there. Suga frowned, crossing his arms across his chest.
"Hobi, you need to move over. There's no room for me."
"Ah...but it's so comfy and..."
Hobi's speech was broken up by a yawn that echoed throughout the bedroom that he did nothing to stifle. Taehyung smirked from the doorway as Suga turned his pouty gaze to look at Namjoon.
"I'm not sleeping with this idiot."
"Nonsense. There's plenty of room," said Namjoon as he moved to tap Hobi on the side of the leg. "Hobi, pick a side."
Again, Hobi immediately obeyed as he rolled over onto the right side of the bed. Suga looked at Namjoon as Namjoon rose his brows. Sighing, Suga moved to the left side of the bed. He laid down, leaving some room between himself and Hobi. Namjoon moved to bring the bedsheet up over them once they were both settled.
"Now just close your eyes and get some sleep," said Namjoon. "When you're rested, then we'll continue our journey."
Namjoon moved to walk back out of the bedroom area - but before he fully could - Suga popped his head up and looked at him with furrowed brows.
"Aren't you going to sleep?"
"I'm going to get Taehyung some food first," said Namjoon. "Then we'll sleep."
Taehyung smiled softly, appreciative of the fact that Namjoon was so considerate. The last thing he had eaten had been before he had been turned into a statue. He didn't know exactly how long that had been. Namjoon left Hobi and Suga out back as he began to look through the haul they had taken from Guy's place. Taehyung took a seat at the table as Namjoon grabbed a loaf of bread, cutting a few slices from it.
"Can I...can I try the fried chicken?" asked Taehyung as Namjoon brought the bread over. Taehyung snatched a slice of bread off the table and he took a bite, eyes rolling upwards in delight at the taste of the food.
Namjoon nodded, moving to go heat it up for Taehyung so he could eat it. Taehyung greedily ate the slices of bread that Namjoon had gotten for him as he watched the fried chicken heat up in the microwave.
"What's that?"
"It's a microwave."
"How does it heat the food up though? Is it magic?"
Namjoon chuckled, bringing the now heated up fried chicken over to Taehyung so he could eat it. After getting him some water to wash it down with, Namjoon sat across from him and began to explain what a microwave was and how it worked. Namjoon was sure that most of it went over Taehyung's head, but that was okay with him. Like Suga and Hobi, Taehyung would have some adjusting to do that would just take some time.
When the food and questions had expired for the evening, Namjoon moved to clean up the mess with the help of Taehyung. Taehyung's eyes were half lidded as sleep started to settle upon him; covering a yawn with the back of one of his hands.
"Come on. Lets get some sleep ourselves," said Namjoon.
Namjoon made sure the door of the RV was locked before shutting off some of the interior lights. He then made his way out back to where the bed was with Taehyung. He noticed that Hobi was still on his side; a soft snore leaving his mouth. Even though it was dark, Namjoon was able to tell that Suga had yet to fall asleep; his body too rigid as he held the sheet up under his chin.
"I'll take this side," whispered Namjoon as he nodded towards Suga.
Taehyung nodded, moving to slip into the middle of the bed by Hobi. Taehyung slipped himself under the covers, sharing the half a pillow that Hobi didn't have under his cheek. Namjoon moved into the middle of the bed by Suga, rolling onto his side so that he faced Suga's back. Reaching out a hand, Namjoon gently let it rest on Suga's shoulder.
"Why aren't you sleeping?" he whispered softly.
Suga didn't say anything at first, but eventually Namjoon saw his shoulders heave up and then slowly down in a long, drawn-out sigh.
"I can't."
"Yes you can," insisted Namjoon, "But you're actively choosing not to. Is something wrong?"
"It's just...I have always been alert. There are no nights off when you're a security system. You have to always be on guard...always ready to protect."
"Well, you don't have to feel that way anymore. You're not a security system anymore."
"Yeah, but how long will that last? I never expected this to happen. If I close my eyes, does that go away too?"
"I won't let it," said Namjoon as he squeezed Suga's shoulder reassuringly. "I'll press that button again and again if I have to, but you're not going back to being just a security system. You're human now and it'll stay that way. Heck, you're family."
Namjoon appreciated Suga confiding in him and didn't want him to be afraid. He deserved to rest.
"Try counting sheep," said Namjoon so suddenly that Suga turned his body so his head could face him, cocking a brow.
"Counting sheep? What the heck are you on about?"
Namjoon chuckled, reaching out a hand to place it over Suga's eyes.
"Close your eyes and I'll show you. Just relax."
Suga grumbled a bit but did as Namjoon said. Soon Namjoon was starting to count off sheep, watching as Suga's body became more relaxed the higher he counted. After reaching fifty sheep, Namjoon removed his hand from Suga's eyes to see that he had them shut; breathing softly as he slept. Namjoon grinned as he moved to make sure the sheet was tucked up around Suga. Turning his head to look at the other two behind him, he noticed that Taehyung was fast asleep with Hobi.
Namjoon laid awake for a little while as the three around him slept, listening to the sounds of night outside the RV. He never thought in his wildest dreams that he would be in this situation, but he was thankful for it all the same. Closing his eyes as exhaustion eventually came over him, Namjoon joined his three new best friends in the land of sleep.
