16. Well-Dressed Lie
Taehyung's head was killing him. He was sure that it was from a combination of the new cut he was now sporting on his forehead and hunger. Aside from the toast he had had in the RV what felt like a lifetime ago, he hadn't eaten in a long while. When Jungkook had brought him before Captain, they had been greeted by a table outfitted in all the food that Taehyung could have possibly imagined. There were a few other pirates already seated in chairs around it while Captain sat at the head, drinking from some sort of jeweled goblet. Captain had gestured towards two empty seats off to his right upon seeing them standing there. Jungkook had dragged Taehyung by the arm and forced him to sit down before taking a seat beside him.
Now Taehyung couldn't stop staring at the food as his stomach growled. He was sure it was audible, but everyone pretended not to hear it. With his hands still bound behind his back, it made it impossible to touch any of the food in front of him. Captain ate a chicken leg as he looked over at the two of them; Jungkook filling up his plate with food as he waited out the silence.
"So, did you get all the gold out of him?" asked Captain.
"Yes," said Jungkook without batting an eye, still concentrating on loading up his plate.
Putting his plate down once it was filled with food, Jungkook moved a hand to dig into his pocket to grab the gold, placing it on the table in front of Captain. Captain looked down at it, visible displeasure in his eyes when he saw what little was there. Captain picked up a piece of the gold in his chicken juice covered fingers, squinting his eyes at it as he held it up in the lantern light.
Here came the headache again, this time fueled more by the panic that they'd be discovered more than the hunger. Taehyung watched as Captain continued to study the gold while Jungkook started to eat the food that was on his plate. Taehyung couldn't help but to glance over at Jungkook, not understanding how the other couldn't be nervous at that point too.
"This is disappointing," said Captain finally as he set the piece of gold back down onto the table. "I expected more."
"Never expect anything and you'll never be disappointed," murmured Jungkook loud enough that Captain heard him.
A belly laugh came from Captain then; met by copycat laughter around the table from the other pirates. The laughter was unsettling to Taehyung as he shifted his gaze to focus down on the food he wasn't allowed to touch. He'd rather look at that than anyone else.
Picking up his goblet again, Captain's lips rested in a small smile as he stood up from where he had been seated. Captain had to duck under the swinging lanterns lighting his quarters as he walked over to stand behind Taehyung's chair. Taehyung stared at the food on the table even harder than before. If his gaze carried the ability to bore holes into the food, it would be doing that now. Taehyung's heart pounded rapidly in his chest as the chair he was seated on creaked; Captain using one hand to pull it out away from the table and turn it slightly.
"Seems like you aren't all that valuable after all," said Captain as he studied Taehyung.
As Captain studied Taehyung's face while Taehyung studied the ground at his feet, Captain's eyes scanned over his forehead. A frown formed upon his lips as he reached out one of his hands to not so gently touch the wound on Taehyung's forehead, bringing his fingertips back after a moment to study the flecks of dried blood that stuck there.
"It's like a fake work of art," said Captain. "It seems like it's worth a fortune, but in the end it's nothing more than a well-dressed lie."
Taehyung lifted his head just in time to see Captain throw what was left in his goblet at his face. Taehyung immediately started to blink back the red wine that trailed down his face and into his eyes. He bent his head down, closing his eyes to try to stop them from getting irritated.
Taehyung's head didn't remain down for long though as Captain threw his goblet down onto the floor, grabbing Taehyung gruffly by the chin to make him look up at him again. He saw a fiery anger appear in Captain's eyes as what Jungkook had used to cover Taehyung's scar started to crumble away, revealing the gold.
"You liar!" snarled Captain as he looked at Jungkook who still remained calm throughout the whole thing.
Taehyung lost his balance as he was dragged up from the chair by another pirate that had stood up from where he had been sitting, seeming to suddenly materialize by his side. Meanwhile, Jungkook was dragged up out of his chair by two pirates, but was managing to fight them off. The fight - while impressive - only lasted for a few moments before Jungkook was clocked over the head. Soon Taehyung was dragged none too gently out of Captain's quarters and onto the main deck of the ship. The pirates that were working on the main deck in the lantern light all turned to look at the commotion spilling from Captain's quarters.
Taehyung tried to swivel to look behind him to see that Jungkook was still knocked out; his head dangling down towards the deck as he was dragged across it by two pirates that looked as if they were about to throw their backs out from the action. The man's pure muscles must be too heavy.
"What are you? A siren?" asked Captain, causing Taehyung to turn his attention back to him as he was gripped gruffly by the chin again. "How did you get him to turn on me?"
"I...I..."
"What? Cat got your tongue?" Captain said with a sneer, tightening his grip on Taehyung's chin so much so that it silenced any words that were about to pass from his lips. "Ah no. I see you still have your wicked tongue. Perhaps I should just cut it out and feed it to the fish."
Though Captain didn't possess Guy's powers, it certainly felt like it to Taehyung for a moment. He felt like he was frozen in his position as Captain dug out a pocketknife with his free hand, bringing it closer to Taehyung's mouth. Just as the tip was about to pass Taehyung's lips, Jungkook's voice pulled it up short.
"I think you've had too much to drink what with your talk of sirens and all."
Growling, Captain turned to look at Jungkook. He was still being restrained by two uneasy looking pirates. His head was lifted up; a small smirk decorating his blood speckled lips.
"I treated you like a son and this...this is the thanks I get!" Captain snapped.
"This is how you'd treat a son? This explains why you don't have any children of your own."
"Watch your tongue..."
"Or what? You'll cut it off?"
Even though the ship was cloaked in a layer of darkness from the night, Taehyung could see Captain's face turning as red as his outfit. He had no idea why Jungkook was doing all this. He couldn't understand what made him worth standing up for; why Jungkook was risking everything to save him.
Taehyung watched as Captain grabbed Jungkook by the collar of his outfit, dragging him up to stand unsteadily on his feet. Captain's face moved until it was just an inch or two away from Jungkook's.
"I would gut you like a fish right where you stand, but I'll save you for the sharks."
"It's because you know you'd lose in a fight against me," said Jungkook. "Admit it."
"Watch your tongue boy!"
"What's with you and your fascination with tongues?" asked Jungkook. "Is it a fetish? Or are you just unable to use yours correctly?"
"Get us swords!" hollered Captain so loudly that Taehyung thought for sure he must have shattered the eardrum of the poor pirate standing nearby.
Taehyung stood off to the side as Jungkook was given a sword along with Captain. Again, it didn't take daylight to see that Captain's sword was sharper than Jungkook's. The lantern light along the deck was enough to illuminate the difference between the two. Within seconds of obtaining the weapons, a fight broke out on the deck. Taehyung watched in awe at how light Jungkook was on his feet. He was so quick with each parry and thrust for being someone who had just been knocked out a few moments before. Captain was almost nicked a few times by Jungkook's sword, finally earning a cut along the top of his ear as he unsuccessfully tried to dodge one of Jungkook's thrusts.
Captain paused in his fighting to cup his stinging ear with one hand, glaring at the smirking Jungkook before turning his eyes towards Taehyung.
"Throw him overboard."
Panic flooded Taehyung's system as two pirates came towards him. He tried to kick out his feet, dragging them along the deck to try to stop his progress towards the plank to no avail. Taehyung soon found himself standing on the edge of the plank, looking down at the midnight blue of the ocean beneath him. He barely had a chance to think about what was about to happen as he was shoved off the plank from behind.
With his hands still bound behind his back, he sank underneath the water almost immediately. The garbled sound of laughter bubbled underneath the water towards him as he sank deeper and deeper into the depths of the ocean. Taehyung tried to kick his feet about like a mermaid to try and propel himself upwards but to no avail. His lungs started to burn the further down he sank; the ship on the surface of the water above him slowly starting to disappear from view.
Jungkook - upon seeing Taehyung pushed off the ship - was distracted from his fighting. Without another word, he rushed to the edge to look down and see that Taehyung had completely disappeared beneath the surface. Without hesitation, Jungkook moved to jump off the side of the ship into the water, swimming down into the dark depths to look for him. Captain moved to look at Jungkook as he disappeared beneath the water, still cupping a hand over his stinging ear.
"Such a well-dressed lie that one was..." sighed Captain as he turned to look at the pirates all clustered behind him. "What are you all staring at?! Get back to your posts this instance or you can join them in their deaths!"
